Eight people held over payments inquiry

Eight people have been arrested over allegations of corrupt payments to police and public officials, Scotland Yard has said.

Those arrested include a serving Surrey Police officer, a serving member of the armed forces and an MoD employee.

News Corporation confirmed five employees of the Sun were arrested, after five men were arrested at addresses in London, Kent and Essex.

The arrests are part of the Operation Elveden probe into payments to police.

Five men aged between 45 and 68 were arrested on suspicion of corruption, aiding and abetting misconduct in a public office, and conspiracy in relation to both offences.

A 39-year-old Surrey Police officer, a 39-year-old Ministry of Defence employee and a 36-year-old member of the armed forces were also arrested at their homes on suspicion of corruption, misconduct in a public office and conspiracy in relation to both.

Those arrested are being questioned at police stations in London, Kent, Essex and Wiltshire.

The arrests were made between 0600 and 0800 GMT on Saturday, police said.

News Corp said its Management and Standards Committee (MSC) had provided information to the Elveden inquiry which led to the arrests.

The company said in a statement: "News Corporation remains committed to ensuring that unacceptable news-gathering practices by individuals in the past will not be repeated and last summer authorised the MSC to co-operate with the relevant authorities.

"The MSC will continue to ensure that all appropriate steps are taken to protect legitimate journalistic privilege and sources, private or personal information and legal privilege.

"News Corporation maintains its total support to the ongoing work of the MSC and is committed to making certain that legitimate journalism is vigorously pursued in both the public interest and in full compliance with the law."

News Corporation is the parent company of News International which owns The Sun and The Times.

Operation Elveden is running alongside the Metropolitan Police's Operation Weeting inquiry into phone hacking at the now-closed News of the World.

Defence Staff Held In Illegal Payments Probe

The Met Police probe into illegal payments by journalists to officials has spread beyond the police for the first time

11:24am UK, Saturday February 11, 2012

Eight people, including a serving member of the Armed Forces, a female Ministry of Defence employee, and five Sun journalists have been arrested over claims of illegal payments to police and public officials.

A serving police officer was also among the eight arrested.

The Metropolitan Police said the arrests were made this morning as part of the Operation Elveden investigation into illegal payments.

The arrests mark the first time the investigation has spread beyond payments to police.

Sky News' Martin Brunt said the deputy editor of The Sun Geoff Webster was one of those detained.

Others included The Sun's picture editor John Edwards, chief reporter John Kay, chief foreign correspondent Nick Parker, and reporter John Sturgis.

The arrests were made after News Corporation handed information to Scotland Yard.

A journalist at newspaper told Sky: "Journalists at The Sun believe this is a witchhunt against one newspaper."

News Corporation confirmed the arrests today.

The company said in a statement that searches had taken place at the homes of those arrested.

It said legal representation is being made available to those arrested.

"News Corporation... is committed to making certain that legitimate journalism is vigorously pursued in both the public interest and in full compliance with the law," the statement said.

It is the second high-profile batch of arrests at The Sun newspaper in as many weeks.

The previous batch of arrest was described by sources within News Corporation as "draining the swamp".
