Was it an accident? Natalie Wood's 1981 drowning death re-opened as homicide investigators receive 'additional information'

These cases don't go away, do they.
I particularly like the box with the following
What needs to be answered
Did she have an argument with her husband?
Who was the last person to see her alive?
Did anyone see her fall?

Rather similar to -
What needs to be answered
Did she have an argument with her mother?
Who was the last person to see her alive?
Did anyone see her fall?

Natalie Wood: LA police reopen actress' death inquiry

US police have reopened an inquiry into the mysterious death of film star Natalie Wood, who drowned in 1981.

Police in Los Angeles say they have received new information relating to the case, but have not given details.

Wood was found dead during a boat trip off the coast of California with her husband, TV star Robert Wagner, and actor Christopher Walken.

At the time her death was ruled to have been an accident, but questions have lingered.

Speaking on Friday, Lt John Corina of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's office said "substantial" new information on Wood's death had come to light, but would confirm little else.

Wood was the star of West Side Story and Rebel Without a Cause
Her death remains classified as an accidental drowning until information if found to prove otherwise, Lt Corina said.

Hours earlier, the captain of the boat, Dennis Davern, told NBC News in a TV appearance that he lied to police during the initial investigation and that a fight between Wood and Mr Wagner had led to her death.

Mr Davern has made similar allegations before, in a magazine article and in an TV interview in 1992.

Pressed on whether Robert Wagner was a suspect, Lt Corina said he was not.

'Row on deck'

Wood had been partying with Wagner and actor Christopher Walken the night before her death, and the coroner's investigation ruled she had been drinking and may have slipped trying to board the dinghy.

"Recently sheriff's homicide investigators were contacted by persons who stated they had additional information about the Natalie Wood Wagner drowning," the department said, announcing the resumption of the investigation.

"Due to the additional information, Sheriff's Homicide Bureau has decided to take another look at the case."

Natalie Wood facts
Died in 1981, aged 43
Was on yacht with her husband and an actor on the night of her death
Best known for playing in West Side Story and Rebel without a Cause
Oscar-nominated three times, but never won
Born as Natalia Nikolaevna Zakharenko, to Russian immigrants in San Francisco

Wood's body was found floating in a Catalina Island cove. Police reports say she was found wearing a long nightgown, socks, and a jacket.

The post-mortem report said Wood had bruises on her body and arms as well as a facial abrasion on her left cheek.

But questions over the exact circumstances of her death have persisted for 30 years. Family members have previously asked for authorities to re-examine the original findings.

The Los Angeles Times newspaper cited County Sheriff Lee Baca as saying detectives wanted to talk to the captain of the yacht, the Splendour, about comments around the 30th anniversary of Wood's death.

The Times also reported allegations that the captain had remembered new facts about the incident.

Prior to recent developments, Natalie Wood's sister, Lana Wood, told CBS she was unhappy with the initial investigation
Natalie Wood's sister, Lana Wood, told CNN last year that she believed she drowned soon after an argument with Robert Wagner on the deck of the yacht.

"I just want the truth to come out, the real story," she said.

And the former captain, Dennis Davern, has published a book entitled Goodbye Natalie, Goodbye Splendour, alleging the actress died after a fight with her husband.

In his book Pieces of My Heart, Wagner acknowledged that there had been a fight with Wood before she had disappeared.

In a statement issued by his publicist, Wagner's family said they supported the reopening of the inquiry and trusted the detectives would "evaluate whether any new information relating to the death of Natalie Wood Wagner is valid, and that it comes from a credible source or sources other than those simply trying to profit from the 30-year anniversary of her tragic death".

Robert Wagner's family welcomed the reopening of the investigation
Wood was the child of Russian immigrant parents in San Francisco, originally named Natalia Nikolaevna Zakharenko.

As a child, she featured in films like Miracle on 34th Street and The Ghost and Mrs Muir.

She was nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar her role in Rebel Without a Cause, and for best actress in Splendor in the Grass and Love with the Proper Stranger. She never won the award.

"This was supplied by author Marti Rulli, whose book, Goodbye Natalie, includes a fresh account of the incident by the yacht’s captain, Dennis Davern.
He has come forward to say he lied to investigators in the wake of the tragedy, and suggests Wagner ensured the investigation was not as thorough as it could have been."

The sentence we are waiting for is
""This was supplied by author Tony Beretta, whose book, Goodbye Madeleine, includes a fresh account of the incident by the couple's friend.
She has come forward to say she lied to investigators in the wake of the tragedy, and suggests someone ensured the investigation was not as thorough as it could have been."

Natalie Wood's death certificate amended

Natalie Wood drowned during a boat trip off the coast of California in November, 1981.

Actress Natalie Wood's death certificate has been amended to reflect some of the lingering questions surrounding the star's death in 1981.

Wood drowned during a boat trip with her husband, TV star Robert Wagner, and actor Christopher Walken. At the time it was ruled to have been an accident.

But police reopened their inquiry last year after receiving new evidence.

The death certificate now says she died as a result of "drowning and other undetermined factors".

The amended document, obtained by the Associated Press news agency, also says the circumstances of how she ended up in the water are "not clearly established". The certificate was altered earlier this month.

Chief of detectives William McSweeney said the decision was made by the coroner's office. He added that detectives still had work to do on the case, but that did not necessarily mean a major development was coming.

"We don't close these cases," he said. "These cases have active periods and more passive periods. We're moving toward the end of an active period."

Resuming the investigation last November, the sheriff's office said: "Recently sheriff's homicide investigators were contacted by persons who stated they had additional information about the Natalie Wood Wagner drowning."

Natalie Wood may have had bruises before drowning - coroner

Natalie Wood drowned during a boat trip off the coast of California in November 1981

Hollywood actress Natalie Wood may have had bruises on her body before she drowned, a coroner's report has said.

Medical officials say unexplained contusions and scratches on the 43-year-old's face and arms led them to amend her death certificate.

Wood drowned during a boat trip with her husband, TV star Robert Wagner, and actor Christopher Walken in 1981.

It was ruled to be an accident, but the inquiry was reopened in November 2011 because of new evidence.

In a 10-page addendum to Wood's autopsy released on Monday, officials said the actress might have had bruises on her arms, scratches on her neck and grazes on her face before she drowned.
'Unanswered questions'
"The location of the bruises, the multiplicity of the bruises, lack of head trauma, or facial bruising support bruising having occurred prior to entry in the water," Chief Medical Examiner Lakshmanan Sathyavagiswaran wrote in the report, which was completed in June.

Robert Wagner's family welcomed the reopening of the investigation
But officials were cautious about drawing conclusions because several pieces of evidence were missing during the review.

"Since there are unanswered questions and limited additional evidence available for evaluation, it is opined by this medical examiner that the manner of death should be left as undetermined," the report said.

The unexplained markings were cited in the report as significant factors that prompted officials to change Wood's death certificate last August from drowning to "drowning and other undetermined factors".

Conflicting versions of what happened on the yacht have contributed to the mystery of how the actress died in November 1981.
Argument
Wood had been partying the night before her death, and the coroner's investigation ruled she had been drinking and may have slipped while trying to board the dinghy.

The investigation was reopened after the captain of the boat, Dennis Davern, told US media that he lied to police, and that a fight between Wood and Wagner had led to her death.

In his book Pieces of My Heart, Wagner acknowledged that there had been an argument with Wood before she had disappeared, but authorities have said the actor is not a suspect in his wife's death.

As a child, Wood featured in films like Miracle on 34th Street and The Ghost and Mrs Muir.

She was nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar for her role in Rebel Without a Cause, and for best actress for Splendor in the Grass, and Love with the Proper Stranger.

Wood Wagner is valid, and that it comes from a credible source or

Of course Wagner would say that wouldnt he that people who tell the truth are profiting from her death.
Truth has its way of resurfacing when you list expect it.

Last person to have seen her alive should have been made suspect, especially considering she'd bruises on her including an abrasion on the cheek (as if someone had slapped her) but apparently Wagner was not under the Police radar during investigation. The Police handled him with kid gloves because of who he is.

She was wearing a nightgown, socks and a jacket. Not an elegant combination and not IMO something you would wear, when going for a dingy to leave the boat and go to the shore ...

I've read Dennis Davern's book and if his version is to be believed, she fell after fighting with Wagner and he didn't try to rescue her knowing that she could not swim. Wagner covers it up using all his celebrity status and connections; Walken, in a sinister, self-preservation mode (he was an up-and-coming actor, Wagner could have easily destroyed if he so minded) keeps mum and denies having ever had any affair with her. No idea they did or did not have an affair, but they had just been co-starring in a film and Wagner was enormously jealous of the young actor.

Dennis Davern was drunk, below deck, with music playing loudly so to drown the noise of shouting and scuffling on the deck. When he realised Natalie wasn't there, he just took Wagner's word and didn't raise the alarm immediately. Since then he was both financially rewarded for keeping quiet and threatened by Wagner according to the book.

Yes, that's my drift too [didn't read the book]: she fell - after having been hit? - and she wasn't rescued.
I'm afraid that alcohol has played a big part for all involved in this drama. IMO the "party" was escalating to the extent that "someone" fell out with another one. It could have been Wagner being jealous with Walker & Nathalie. It could have been Nathalie being jealous with Wagner & Walker ... IMO ... just a hunch [maybe I've always found Walker a bit creepy - I'm not a fan]. And I remember Paris friends of mine long time ago telling me stories e.g. of Romy Schneider flipping after finding Belmondo and Delon in bed together ... ;-)

Actor Robert Wagner REFUSES to answer detectives' questions over mystery drowning of Natalie Wood

Natalie Wood drowned, age 43, after going overboard her 60-foot yacht Splendor on November 29, 1981

Police and the coroner at the time ruled her death accidental - though authorities have since reopened the case

Husband Robert Wagner, 82, denies being involved in her death but has repeatedly refused police requests for a new interview

Hollywood actor Robert Wagner has declined to be interviewed by detectives in a fresh inquiry into the drowning death of his film star wife Natalie Wood three decades ago.

Mr Wagner - who is best known for starring in the television shows 'It Takes a Thief' and 'Switch' - was interviewed by authorities soon after Ms Wood's drowning in 1981.

But the actor is the only person who was on the yacht the night she died who has not spoken to detectives as part of the latest inquiry, according to investigators - despite repeated requests.

Too long to copy and paste with lots of photos........
