Gerrys Laptop

Post by Gillyspot on 25.08.11 15:46

Just been mooching on the internet and noticed that the Portuguese Police urgently wanted to view the information stored on Gerry McCann's laptop.

From the Independent 13th September 2007

"Portuguese prosecutors have applied for Gerry McCann's laptop computer and his wife's diary to be handed over to the authorities investigating the disappearance of their daughter, sources revealed.

Detectives in the Algarve are particularly keen to track emails sent by Mr McCann from the computer he used while in Portugal to keep an almost daily blog on the campaign to find Madeleine.

An urgent application for access to the personal artefacts was made by Jose Cunha de Magalhaes e Meneses, the public prosecutor, to a judge in Portimao on Tuesday.

Police sources said the criminal instructing judge, Pedro Miguel dos Anjos Frias, drew up papers approving the request and they were due to be passed to Leicestershire police today.

Mr McCann took his laptop when he returned to the family home in Rothley, Leicestershire, with his wife Kate at the weekend, and it is understood it will be analysed by police in Britain.

Exchanged

"The police want Gerry's laptop," a Portuguese source said. "They want to know what kind of emails Gerry exchanged with certain people.

"It is more about Gerry than Kate. They want the computer and a lot of other things -- letters and some personal objects. They also want Kate's diary but the computer is the main thing."

Mr McCann was regularly seen using his laptop during his travels around Europe, north Africa and America.

His last entry on the 'Find Madeleine' site was made on September 10, where he described being named as suspects as "unbelievably stressful and emotionally draining"."

I can find a request from the Public Prosecutor - Jose Magalhaes e Menezes

"In the meantime the existence of a laptop computer rented by Gerald McCann after the disappearance of Madeleine on 3rd May came to our knowledge, which was rented to him by Nuno Ferreira who voluntarily delivered the computer to us so that the appropriate examinations could be carried out.

I propose, according to the terms of article 189 of the CPP that the analysis of the hard disk of the laptop computer Sony, VAIO with series number 282479595001799 should be authorised."

But no more about it. Does anyone know whether the police got it or not and if not why not?

Here it is http://www.mccannpjfiles.co.uk/PJ/LAP_TOP.htm

EXAMINATION OF THE CONTENTS
In the "screening" of the contents of the computer approximately 177.000 entries were found (files, pastes, etc).

The analysis of these entries was carried out in detail by the PJ specialists.

This report was revised by me, Carlos Coelho.

Signed.

Ok I am stupid it is a Sony Vaio with a Toshiba hardrive (why would they do that)?

One further question. Aparently Gerry was seen regularly using a laptop but this one was apparently sent back after a month so at least by end June latest.

seems like he had the sony vaio rented in Portugal and this is the one the pj got hold of and examined. Seems like he then had a laptop from the uk that he used . There are various press reports that it was a white apple mac ..

Not seen any reports that they actually got it though....

Well done again Stewie

Interesting they state in the article that they think it will be "virtually impossible to recover any forensic clues". Why?

"The white Apple Mac was brought from the UK with other equipment when family and friends began gearing up their Find Madeleine campaign in Praia da Luz.

Since then it has been constantly at his side.

He uses it to write his regular internet blog, but detectives will be more interested in looking at emails he sent or received in the aftermath of his daughter's disappearance. Experts will be employed to open any deleted files and to examine which websites he visited.

However, as with other potential pieces of evidence, it will now be virtually impossible to recover any forensic clues from it should police wish to do so."

No laptop bu USB stick ' with photographs'

Post by tigger on 26.08.11 14:34

On the night of 3/4 May. ROB was allegedly the one who printed ALL the posters and photographs of Maddie with the use of an USB key given him by Gerry.
I think the first poster where Maddie looks barely older than two with the handwritten message was supposed to be on the stick as well.
The iconic photoshopped poster photo was also supposed to be on the USB stick. However, there's extensive evidence that that photo could not have been printed that night at MW, whatever the lady with the convieniently lost printer says.
But without a laptop the whole thing is totally impossible without premeditation.

I think, about the data on either of the laptops, what the police is referring to is that a software programme may have been used to delete data permanently.
This might still leave a trace of having been used, but the data would then really be lost.
But it seems to me that the police did get a good deal of data out of the cameras, not all of which is in the public domain.

Would the e-mails be permanently deleted?

Was this not raised regarding the NoTW trying to delete them but they were still able to recover them - I may be wrong but there would be a data base (independent) somewhere holding this info. Can't quite remember but NoTW tried unsuccessfully to do this at a base in India.

The emails would be stored with their provider as well I suppose. I'm with gmail and always delete everything from the gmail site when I'm at the library. However, I'm sure most of that is still retrievable by Google.
But on the laptops it's another matter.

The police have the facility to recover deleted files.

"Many computer users, including some who should know better, are unaware that deleted files can be recovered — undeleted — and can yield information which can be used against the person who deleted them. This information can be as common as a deleted email message or as important as sensitive business records or government transactions. Those who are less technically astute may assume that if a file doesn't show up in a directory (or folder), it's gone forever. Few people know that deleted files are not erased; the data is just hidden, and the files can be undeleted. Still fewer users know how to undelete files, either to recover from accidental deletion or to "go fishing" for interesting data. It is unlikely that your little sister can undelete your files, but there are several US government agencies which — if properly motivated — could perform some amazing feats with your old computer."
http://www.akdart.com/priv9.html

I have also read elsewhere that when you delete something (it isn't actually "whooshed") you are simply removing the access to find the file not the actual file.

"bесаυѕе whеn уου delete something οn a computer уου dont delete thе entire thing уου јυѕt delete thе access tο іt

reflect οf a program οr a file аѕ a household, аnԁ аƖƖ уου ԁο wen уου delete іt іѕ delete thе doorway іntο thе household

thе household іѕ still thеrе bυt уου cant ɡеt іn

police саn cause thеу υѕе windows"

Timing wise, it looks like the pressure was mounting in september - Pj trying to fly to UK to reinterview the T9, requests for GM's laptop and KM's diary.... then was is October when Amaral was called off ? Suspect they never managed to get hold of the laptop. Probably it's long gone and is now in landfill somewhere.

Of course, one of the nice things about Apple Macs is their good photo editing software....

Yes, Photoshop is the perfect software for this, but is not quite the same package or as good as on a PC version, allegedly.
