Now, here's an ironic thing...Guardian Assistant Editor David Leigh, who has been part of his paper's excellent phone-hacking expose team, has admitted, er... phone hacking.

And he confesses: "There is certainly a voyeuristic thrill in hearing another person's private messages."

He wrote this in a Guardian website article in 2006, just after News of the World royal editor Clive Goodman had admitted phone hacking and was awaiting his jail sentence.

"I've used some of those questionable methods myself over the years," wrote Mr. Leigh. "I, too, once listened to the mobile phone messages of a corrupt arms company executive - the crime similar to that for which Goodman now faces the prospect of jail."

Mr. Leigh justifies his hacking because he was trying to expose bribery and corruption, not tittle tattle.

He also admits blagging, phoning Maggie Thatcher's son Mark at 10 Downing Street and claiming to be a Middle East fixer with whom Thatcher was allegedly involved in a business project.

A Guardian spokeswoman told the Metro newspaper: "The Guardian does not and has not authorised phone hacking."
