The Triangle

(google translation)

On the 13th July 2007 Gerry McCann was visiting CEOP headquarters, meeting with Jim Gamble after having received a standing ovation from police officers a day earlier in a PR stunt organised by the SUN.

On the 20th July Mark Harrison, the national search advisor of the NPIA, who organised the search by the world renowned sniffer dogs Eddie and Keela with their handler Martin Grimes, was already on his way to Portugal to assist the PJ with this planned search. Before going to Portugal he would have done some preparations and have held meetings to outline the upcoming search.

On the 19th July, one day before Mark Harrison reached Portugal, the phenomenon that titles this blogpost started. According to the phone ping lists the McCanns start to visit a triangle between Budens, Raposeira and Sagres. This activity stopped on the 2nd August at the day of the dog searches in their villa and one day prior to their visit to Huelva. These visits gain even more importance from the fact, that Gerry drives to this area on the day he returns from Washington on the 26th July on his way straight from the airport only stopping to drop Kate off in Praia da Luz. Apart from one family outing in June they had never before visited that area and did not visit it after this cluster on 19th, 26th, 27th, 28th July, 1st, 2nd August.

It is interesting that neither Gerry's blog nor Kate's diary/book nor media reports cover these visits that all happened in the late afternoon/early evening except for the 1st August when they returned to Praia da Luz after 22:00. We can safely say that they were not followed by any reporters on these trips which renders their argument useless that they were constantly watched and never had a chance to dispose of a body unnoticed.

The question arises if these visits are a direct consequence of the visit to CEOP and the possible information of the upcoming search with the enhanced human victim recovery dog.

This is what Sandy Cameron has to say:

On one occasion, I believe it was on July of 2007, I took Patricia to the supermarket. We carried bags in the boot (trunk) of the Renault Scenic; bought various items including fresh fish, shrimp and beef. When we unloaded the shopping bags, we noticed that blood has run out of the bottom of the plastic bag. After this shopping trip and still in the month of July 2007, I began to notice a strange odour in the car. I did not give it much importance and assumed it was likely due to the leakage from the rubbish bags or from the blood which had escaped from the shopping bags. As a result, we removed the carpet from the boot (trunk) in order to clean it. I tossed (beat) the boot carpet to remove any particles and cleaned it with a wet cloth and left it to air out.
So the smell developed apparently at the end of July shortly before the dogs arrived? Unfortunately the area of the Triangle is too large to be searched thoroughly. A burial somewhere in that area could remain undetected for years but the ground in Portugal in the summer heat will make digging very tiresome if not impossible. So what else is there in that region? We have a long stretch of coastline with innumerous little bays and caves. There is an impressive monolith right in the center of the triangle. There is a cemetery outside Vila do Bispo and some lonely chapels as well.

One other thing that is probably completely unrelated but still interesting is the fact that the one person who gave this horrifying profile about Robert Murat, never confirmed by anybody else and contradicted by the actual witness, but nevertheless used by CEOP to construct a profile of him that was used as the basis for his implication, is from Vila do Bispo and a leading figure in the local council.

Another area pointed out by Johanna

    From the Mark Harrison Report:

Low tide on the night of the 3rd May 2007 was at 2200 hrs at 2m. The maximum amount of beach would be accessible including the rocky outcrop.
High tide on the 4th May 2007 was at 0415hrs at 3.1 m.
While 22:00 is a perfect time to reach the Rocha Negra via the beach on foot - and there is only a tiny window of opportunity - , the same could only be achieved from the plateau overlooking Praia da Luz at 6:00 in the morning when George Brooks saw a couple carrying a child on the road between Lagos and Praia da Luz in an area with access to sideroads leading to that plateau.

Tidal charts are usually accessible at all sports centers that cater for sailing and surfing.

On a side note...

What were David Payne (phone pings between 12:35 - 16:43), Rachael Mampilly (12:24 - 16:09), Russell O'Brien (14:23 - 16:17) and most possibly Fiona Payne (no phone) doing close to the Lagos/Santa Maria phone masts on May 10th, while Jane Tanner, Matt Oldfield and the McCanns were at the Portimao Police station? A mast that also covers the area of the Boavista Golf Club and the adjoining Rocha Negra.
