Officers stabbed in Darlington street attack

Two police officers have been stabbed in a street in Darlington.

The pair were called to the rear of Gurney Street by reports of a man acting suspiciously.

When they approached he became violent. One of them was injured in the arm, the other in the head. Their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

A 22-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm after members of the public helped the police officers.

Claims of a police leak over Milly Dowler case to be investigated

Milly disappeared as she walked home from school in Walton-on-Thames

The police watchdog is investigating a claim that an officer on the Milly Dowler murder case gave information to the News of the World newspaper.

The allegation against the Surrey Police officer is from 2002, the year the 13-year-old was murdered by doorman Levi Bellfield.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is offering to meet the Dowler family.

In June it emerged Milly's phone had been hacked by the News of the World.

Mark Lewis, the Dowler family's solicitor, said: "The Dowler family welcome the full investigation into what happened at the time of the initial inquiry into Milly's disappearance.

"It would not be appropriate to make any further comment at this stage."

A News International spokesman said the company would not be commenting.

The schoolgirl disappeared while walking home from school in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey.

Bellfield was convicted of her murder in June 2011.

Further to this quote this has now appeared in the Independant, very interesting...........................

MPs split over disclosure of 'dynamite' hacking evidence

By Cahal Milmo and Oliver Wright

Tuesday, 16 August 2011

The dossier contains submissions made in response to James Murdoch's evidence in Parliament last month

A committee of MPs investigating the News of the World phone-hacking scandal, which has received new evidence described by one member as "dynamite", is divided over whether to make the documents public this week.

The House of Commons Media, Culture and Sport Select Committee will meet today to decide whether to disclose submissions from key figures following claims that James Murdoch was "mistaken" in aspects of evidence he gave to MPs last month. The dossier includes responses by Mr Murdoch to additional questions from MPs, as well as testimony from the paper's head lawyer, Tom Crone, and Colin Myler, who edited the NOTW before it was closed by the Murdoch family's media empire, News Corporation.

It addresses the issue of whether Mr Murdoch knew of a crucial email which undermined the explanation that hacking was due to one "rogue reporter". Last week, Tom Watson, a Labour MP on the committee, said the documents were "dynamite" and he would vote for their disclosure. But The Independent understands that there is no unanimity among MPs about the timing of the publication of the documents, and some members are "reticent" about releasing them today. The committee will also decide whether to recall Mr Murdoch, but this may not happen until Parliament reconvenes next month.

Mr Murdoch, the boss of News Corp in Europe, stands by his testimony to MPs that he had no knowledge of the so-called "for Neville" email, which suggests that knowledge of hacking went beyond one reporter at the NOTW. But his assertion has been challenged by Mr Myler and Mr Crone, who say Mr Murdoch was aware of the email in 2008, when he signed off on a £700,000 out-of-court settlement with Gordon Taylor, head of the Professional Footballers' Association. The Independent understands that a submission has also been supplied to MPs by Harbottle & Lewis, the law firm which conducted a review of internal News International emails in 2007 and found they contained no evidence of "illegal actions".

Lord Macdonald, the former director of public prosecutions, who reviewed the documents in May, said it was "blindingly obvious" that they held evidence of criminality.

In a separate development, Citigroup warned investors that Trinity Mirror, owner of the Daily Mirror and Sunday Mirror, could face serious hacking allegations. Citigroup cut its target price for shares in the company. Trinity Mirror strongly denied any wrongdoing by staff. It has asked its senior journalists for written undertakings that they had no knowledge of phone hacking or corrupt payments to police.

This must have been the explosive letter Tom Watson tweeted about a few days ago. It does throw apart News Int defence. Hope more people speak out now

Tom said: "Clive Goodman's letter is the most significant piece of evidence that has been revealed so far. It completely removes News International's defence. This is one of the largest cover-ups I have seen in my lifetime.".....Tom please look at the McCanns

'Kuttner rearrested' in hacking probe

PA
Tuesday, 30 August 2011

The former managing editor of the News of the World was rearrested today on suspicion of phone hacking and inappropriate payments to police, according to reports.

A 71-year-old man was released on bail tonight after being questioned at a London police station, Scotland Yard said.

The suspect is thought to be Stuart Kuttner, who resigned as the newspaper's managing editor in July 2009.

He was reported as being arrested on Sky News.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "The 71-year-old man was arrested on 2 August and bailed to a date in August and he has now been bailed to a date in September."

Kuttner has previously denied his decision to quit shortly before the Guardian disclosed the News of the World paid out more than £1 million to settle cases which threatened to reveal evidence of alleged phone hacking was related to the issue.

At the time of his resignation, he was described by then-editor Colin Myler as a man whose "DNA is absolutely integrated into the newspaper which he has represented across the media with vigour".

The 71-year-old is referred to as Man I by Operation Weeting detectives who are investigating phone hacking.

He is known as Suspect I by officers from Operation Elveden who investigate inappropriate payments to police.

Operation Weeting: Police arrest 47-year-old woman

6 January 2012

By Andrew Pugh

Officers from the Met unit investigating phone-hacking have arrested a 47-year-old woman at an address in Essex.

A statement released this morning said that officers from Operation Weeting made the arrest at 6.55am on suspicion of attempting to pervert the course of justice, and that she is currently in custody at an Essex police station.

It is understood that the woman is not a police officer.

She is the 17th person to be arrested as part of Operation Weeting, alongside high-profile figures including former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks and ex-Downing Street communications chief Andy Coulson.

What are they going to do with all the arrested ? Bang them into one-jail-room and throw away the key? I doubt it. Most of them will emerge with a slapped wrist and life goes on.
