FOI request by Jon Clements of the Mirror
Have a look at this very intersesting blog by Jon Clements of the mirror on possible bugging of the McCanns by UK police
"A few days ago I received an interesting letter from Leicestershire police about the Madeleine McCann investigation.
I had asked them, in July, if they had got any warrants (under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act) to use surveillance powers - such as phone tapping and email interception on behalf of the Portuguese police.
The force initially stalled saying it needed to "consult other Agencies" before replying.
After a six month delay, Leicestershire has now claimed it is exempt from Freedom of Information laws in this case due to "national security".
I've put in dozens of FoI requests to police forces over the years, some you get and some you don't but "national security" is a new one on me.
To make matters even murkier, Leicestershire claimed a second exemption because the information I requested could relate to "the Security bodies".
A quick look at the FoI Act reveals "Security bodies" are MI5, MI6, GCHQ (pictured above), special forces (such as the SAS) and the Serious Organised Crime Agency.
Hmm.
Despite claiming these exemptions, Leicestershire seem at pains to neither confirm nor deny they hold any information relevant to my request anyway.
Check out (slowly I suggest) the tortuous conclusion to the three page letter explaining their stance.
"It is our decision that the Leicestershire Constabulary must maintain a position of neither confirming nor denying that any relevant information is held and that this response, which neither confirms nor denies that information is held, should not be taken as conclusive evidence that the information you have requested exists or does not exist".
Thanks, but I think that is a rather long-winded way of saying Foxtrot Oscar.
However, it does beg the question just who was bugging the McCanns after they returned from Praia da Luz?
And what has the answer got to do with national security?"

He had earlier asked for information and this was the answer he got at that time. Which was a big fat zero as Tony got

Re: FOI request by Jon Clements of the Mirror
Just tweeted it to @MI5GovUK The Security Service
Response was "For direct questions, please submit this form; "mi5.gov.uk/output/make-a-… "- National Security is protecting GB against major threat.
I may ask those questions myself and fill in the form but there we have it then McCanns are terrorists. LOL.

Re: FOI request by Jon Clements of the Mirror
I do like the first comment on that page:
Istill do believe that that is at the heart of this matter. Whatever the McCanns try, they are nothings. They are no spy or part of a secret nucleair program. They have everything that would prevent them from ever being accepted as spies, their blabbering mouths to start with.
It all circle around a group of people trying to help them in the beginning. Some, like the pm and the ambassador grossly overstepping their borders. And now nobody can admit anymore they were taken in by 2 neglectful lousy parents.
Don't forget worse than any threat against national security, worse than criminal behavior, adultery or even pedophilia is being found stupid.
It has to do with national pride, and national embarrasment.

Re: FOI request by Jon Clements of the Mirror
I find it interesting that Jon Clements bloggs (there are 4 and they are not pro McCann by any stretch) are still available on the Mirror website to be found by anyone.
Surely the McCanns would have found these blogs and caused them to be removed if they could but obviously the Mirror is not a Murdoch newspaper (but I have saved them just in case LOL)
But if you fancy to have a read here they are STILL (well at the moment)

WOW look at this one:
Well we know now, isn't it?
Kate and Gerry McCann, and national security - update
BY JON CLEMENTS ON FEB 18, 09 03:39 PM IN MCCANN
I've just spoken to the McCanns' spokesman Clarence Mitchell who has declined to comment.
Quite sensible, really.
After all, you never know who's listening do you?
Well we know now, isn't it?

Re: FOI request by Jon Clements of the Mirror
Sent another tweet to @MI5GovUK Why was the question of whether the #McCanns were bugged by police or not a matter of National Security in a FOI request in 2009?
Got response "This has not been proven. Furthermore this issue was an international incident. However we do not answer direct questions on here" - thinking that is a direct answer myself - being no not answering
Then "For direct questions, please submit this form; http://t.co/EAq4aTR - The Security Service tries & helps in any major GB incident"
Think I may have rattled their cage - will you all visit me in prison Aghh

Re: FOI request by Jon Clements of the Mirror
The MCCanns were claiming back in Sept 2007 that the british police were bugging them.

Re: FOI request by Jon Clements of the Mirror
Don't you worry, we'll visit you.
It is so clear though that they can never backtrack this. Can you imagine: question: what was the national security issue here; answer that the British ambassador to Portugal personally interfered in a foreign police investigation so acriminal Katey Healy could wash her dirty panties.
No decent government would admit to that.
