Read Kate McCann's book - ABSOLUTELY FREE
It's absolutely true! (unlike the book!)
This fantastic offer comes to you courtesy of WH Smith!
And you have a full 30 days to read it.
A prominent notice in white writing on a blue background informs all customers in clear terms of their 'no quibble guarantee', which is...
"Buy any item in WH Smiths and if you are not completely satisfied, bring it back within 30 days, in its original condition, and with your receipt, and we will make a full refund or offer you an alternative".
Nothing could be plainer!

Was there an itsy-bitsy asterisk beside the word satisfied, that says 'with the condition, not the content', by any chance?

Ah that old 'no quibble guarantee' which is only effective if you don't quibble! But surely if you're going to return said book after 30 days you will have to put that 'no quibble guarantee' to the test by....quibbling? So, what is one to say when returning the book for a refund Mr B? It didn't contain the version of truth I expected so, under the Sale of Goods Act, I want my money back?

I shall take mine back together with the receipt (of course) and a copy of The Madeleine McCann Research Group's '50 FACTS' leaflet - and demand a full refund, saying: 'You falsely advertised this as 'non-fiction'.'Stella wrote:Was there an itsy-bitsy asterisk beside the word satisfied, that says 'with the condition, not the content', by any chance?

No, you've got this wrong.ufercoffy wrote:Ah that old 'no quibble guarantee' which is only effective if you don't quibble! The 'no quibble' guarantee works like this:
The retailer says this to the customer: "If you quibble about what you have bought, and are not FULLY satisfied, we WON'T quibble, we'll give you a full refund - just like that".
The book has to be brought back in it's original condition, though.
So I would recommend washing your hands thoroughly before reading it.

If it works, I will certainly give it a go. Otherwise, I was going to use the library.
Maybe if you can read it overnight, as I suspect the type face will be quite large, you could also say someone has already bought me a copy of this and I don't need two, can I have a refund please and bobs your uncle.

But does not the "original condition" mean "unread". Even "unopened", which since it is a hardback woud necessarily involve straining the glue on the spine, just a little bit.
If you flatten it out to scan it, you will clearly not be returning it in its "Original" condition.

And afterwards. I was always taught to wash my hand AFTER using the toilet !

REPLY: No. It means returning it in the same condition as it left WH Smiths. Like a dress you try on that is a size too small and you take it back to Marks & Sparks.

REPLY: Come, come. Surely WH Smiths aren't going to 'quibble' about a petty thing like that?

REPLY: You're right. Using your digital camera to photograph the content would probably be nearly as good and would leave less of a carbon footprint.

I was taught as a speaker to speak to the audience, i.e. take account of who they are and what their views were.PeterMac wrote:Many thanks Tony, but I have never tried on a dress that turned out to be too small !!!
Taking account of the target audience on this forum, I thought this bit would strike a chord with quite a few on here: "Like a dress you try on that is a size too small".

Does that mean you've tried one on that turned out to be a bit too big?

Re: Read Kate McCann's book - ABSOLUTELY FREE
Posts on this forum are being taken more than a tad too seriously by some of the McCann-believers.
One of the more pompous ones, marosiala, has taken time out of her day to contact WH Smith headquarters about this thread, judging by this tweet this afternoon:
marosiala: @urcrazytoo Well WH Smiths have been informed I've just sent an email to them. How dare he promote this idea to harm search #McCann
It might be a lot wiser for those few who entrust Brian Kennedy and Dave Edgar with the search for Madeleine to donate a tenner via PayPal to the Find Madeleine Fund instead of buying the book. The Fund will be lucky to see £1 out of the book's £10 purchase price. Or - to avoid giving PayPal their cut - just put a tenner in an envelope to 'Dave Edgar' at his nice little pad in Victoria Street, Crewe...to quote Clarence, "it'll get there".

I will buy the book from WH Smith.
Read it carefully.
Only if it disappoints will I return it in pristine condition for a full refund.
Perhaps I will even find the missing piece of the puzzle? I always come back to Dr David A Payne as being that missing piece of the puzzle!!

A visit to WH Smith
I called in at my local WH Smiths today, as it happens.
The counter staff had had no other enquiry so far about the book's availability.
There were posters promoting loads of other best-selling books, but not this one.
Despite claims that the book is being sold by WH Smith for just £10, the lady assistant said the cost of the book would be £20 - with no charge for postage or ordering.

Re: Read Kate McCann's book - ABSOLUTELY FREE
£20 seems a little excessive for 'an account of the truth'. It would be priceless, however, if it were to be the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth if told in a court of law.

It's down to £9 now at Amazon, didn't stay at £10 for long, and p&p free. Someone ought to get one to send to the Portuguese Attorney General though, in case he hasn't been given a complimentary (!) copy.
