As previously discussed, Edward Smethurst is a long-standing and promiment member of the East Lancashire Masonic Lodge, registered number 5332. For some reason, this lodge is also called the 'Commonweal Lodge'.

Photos of Freemasons in their full regalia are relatively rare - and ones of Edward Swethurst in his apron are even rarer, but thanks to a kind Freemason (not in the East Lancashire Branch I hasten to add), one has become available, you'll see Edward Smethurst in Photo No. 9 running down this link, the tall chap on the back row just to the left (as you look at it) of the large portrait hanging on the wall.

Underneath this pic the text refers to the 'Commonweal Lodge':

What we need to do is to identify all of the other people in that photo and find out what they do, as it is these people who will be the first ones that he turns to in an emergency.

To quote Mr Smethurst re: "Maddie: The truth about the lie": “We are currently demanding €1.2 million in damages, but we are reserving the right to increase this value as soon as we can ascertain what profits have been generated from the sale of this book.” http://www.theportugalnews.com/cgi-bin/article.pl?id=1029-7

There's also mention of Smethurst here http://www.elmc.co.uk/pages/Young_People's_Committee/YP_Com.asp

TTW4 posted many articles on his blog about the freemasons and their links to the McCanns, but it's been whooshed now.

Is there some kind of pecking order when they take these photos. The Grand Master to the front and the junior candidates to the back, I wonder?

TITLE OF THREAD REMOVED (4) Empty Masonic pecking order

Post by Tony Bennett 24.08.11 11:32

You start at the bottom as a 'First Degree' Mason.

Play your cards right and you rise to the 'Thirty-Third' Degree.

By the way, I was told that in the police, where of course Freemasonic activity is rife, your position in the Masonic pecking order takes precedence over your Police rank. Thus a Detective Sergeant who has a higher Masonic rank than a Detective Superintendent can tell him what to do.

I spoke to TTW4 and met him on a couple of meetings to discuss the case in depth, he probed me about my stance on Freemasonry and I told him I would have nothing to do with it and regarded it as having great potential for doing evil, though I recognise that at the junior level it may be a cosy meeting-place for businessmen and the like. He seemed satisfied. I think he was right to probe into the Masonic aspects of the Madeleine McCann case and he made some good observations IIRC. He was a bit of a tecchie with a talent for graphics. I lost touch with him and don't know if his blog is still going?

TITLE OF THREAD REMOVED (4) Empty Still more on Smethurst, his fellow Masons, and BNFL

Post by Tony Bennett 30.08.11 9:40

More information is filtering through to us about Edward Smethurst and his friends.

If we go back to the pic of Edward Smethurst in his Masonic regalia, lier in the thread, there is a burly-looking bloke immediately to his left (as you look at the photo), with grey-white hair and beard.

We can now reveal his identity as ALVIN SHUTTLEWORTH, the Legal Director of British Nuclear Fuels Limited (BNFL): http://www.sutherland.com/alvin_shuttleworth/

It would appear that it was Shuttleworth who gave Smethurst his job at BNFL; Masonic sources say that the two men have been close for 20 years and that Smethurst looks up to Shuttleworth as a kind of mentor and 'father figure', probably from Smethurst's days as a teenager when his father died suddenly in a mysterious fire and Smethurst was brought up largely by the Masons, as he and his mother gradually became estranged (she and Smethurst have no contact these days).

The closeness of Shuttleworth and Smethurst is reinforced by the fact that Shuttleworth is a fellow Director of one of Smethurst's new ventures, viz. his Palladium company.

Dr Gerald McCann is of course very much connected to the British nuclear industry in his role as adviser to COMARE.

We might add that Shuttleworth & Smethurst appear to have played lead roles in helping BNFL refuse liability for many people who claimed to have suffered the ill-effects of radiation.

More coming soon.

It is looking more and more like Gerry's reputation and his position on COMARE, is what is being protected here.

This is an utter disgrace and I totally blame the Labour Government for interfering in the investigation to get him off.TITLE OF THREAD REMOVED (4) 93316

I am sure that Gerry wasn't appointed to COMARE until after they returned from Portugal.

Any one find the article about that?

Only thing I can find regarding it was from this dated 24.11.07

"The father of the missing little girl was about to be assigned to a position in the team led by Gordon Brown, the British Prime-Minister… additionally, sources from Portuguese authorities reveal to 24horas some “not very normal” facts…"

The way the masons work is, they have people lined up well in advance for all these positions, so the actual start date is not that important in practice, only on paper.

The question is "how come that Gerry, a run-of-the-mill cardiologist, got appointed to COMARE?" The answer would appear to be, that he knew Shuttleworth and Smethurst through Masonic links well enough in advance (of whatever date he was appointed - it's not really important) in order to be trusted by them and by those in the Government who wanted COMARE to be a reliable rubber-stamp for Govt policy.
On another level, perhaps PdL, and the OC in particular, was chosen because Smethurst knew his way around there and could recommend it as a place where anything goes.

Indeed.

Families lose fight to sue BNFL: Court ruling ends legal aid for leukaemia children who lived near nuclear plants

"Alvin Shuttleworth, BNFL's legal director, said: 'We have lived with this shadow over us for a long time. Following our decisive victory in the
Hope and Reay cases it was only right that the rest should either be proceeded with or dismissed. As the judge noted, even the plaintiff's
barrister agreed that these cases would fail if they came to trial today'.!
