The Woke Cult: Have Your Say Empty The Woke Cult: Have Your Say

Post by Verdi 14.04.21 17:22

One day comparatively recently I was awoken by the radio telling me tales of global social unrest, during which time I was re-introduced to a word I thought to be buried with Samuel Johnson's first lexicon of words .... woke !!!.

Well yes I know, I've just done that but what's that got to do with anything?

Later in the day, as the senses started to dawn, I was compelled to look up the word I thought had long since been forgotten in contemporary parlance.  This is the word according to wikipedia, a sort of internet apology for more reliable encyclopedia that even today educates across the generations..

The Woke Cult: Have Your Say Scre1487

Woke is a term that refers to awareness of issues that concern social justice and racial justice.  It is sometimes used in the African-American Vernacular English expression stay woke. Woke resurfaced in 2014 during the Black Lives Matter movement as a label for vigilance and activism concerning racial inequalities and other social disparities such as discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community, women, immigrants and or other marginalized populations.

Woke has also been the subject of memes, ironic usage and criticisms.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woke

That's it in a nutshell!

Never forgotten but nonetheless catapulted into every day use in very recent times.

I have to say I harbour a dislike for words adopted by the media, especially when invariably taken out of context and given a whole new meaning, or variations of the true meaning - woke is one such word!

So back to basics .... 'awareness of matters of social injustice'.  That indeed covers a wide spectrum of world affairs so woke it is now and will no doubt continue to be, all the time there is mainstream and antisocial media to maintain the momentum.

The 'woke cult' therefore deserves a place on the forum for members to weigh up the pros and cons of yet another cult that's made it's way into our daily lives.  Why not start with 'er indoors - she who must be obeyed Missy Meghan The Woke Cult: Have Your Say Scre1489 Markle.

We should honour Prince Philip by fighting the warped cult of woke

The Duke would have been embarrassed by the national outpouring of grief but it's a pleasure to learn so much that we didn’t know about him

Allison Pearson

Those who admired the Duke of Edinburgh – and there are millions of us – should honour his memory by fighting back against the warped cult of woke that regards Philip and his ilk as racist, sexist and all the other hysterical “ists” they deploy to silence decent people with a love of country and a belief that there are more important things in this life than self. How dare the toddler Marxists on Twitter accuse the generation that defeated fascism of being fascists. Good men died in order that they could take their freedom for granted. Those who lived to tell the tale, like Prince Philip, never took it for granted.

@Verdi wrote:One day comparatively recently I was awoken...
Hi @Verdi

I think I became aware of 'woke' culture about 18 months ago. It is rapidly seeping into the Church of England, who are beginning to mount a variety of 'woke' anti-racist programmes amongst their mostly white clerics.

To show you how far this has gone already in this country, I will share an article I have penned today for the Christian newspaper I write for: British Church Newspaper

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As National Trust volunteers leave after being told they are racists...                                        Nursery school pupils “need to be taught about white privilege and systemic racism”, say several education organisations

An extraordinary report, produced by a variety of left-wing groups, including the National Education Union, has stated that “children below the age of six need to recognise racist behaviours and develop anti-racist views”. It adds that “those teaching them need to understand about white privilege” so that “children are steered on to the right course”.

The recommendations come in the ‘Birth to 5’ report, which claims that even at this young age, children already have a racist mindset, brimming with rampant “racial prejudice and misconceptions” which could be “maintained or reinforced” unless “addressed by a teacher who has undergone essential practitioner training”.

The National Day Nurseries Association and Association for Professional Development in Early Years contributed to the report. The government’s existing guidance already acknowledges that at age five, “children should know some similarities and differences between different religious and cultural communities in this country”.

'INSULTING'...'HORRIFIED'

The report met with fierce resistance from Harlow MP Robert Halfon, Chairman of the Commons Education Select Committee, who said: “This dogma and doctrine is totally out of place. We have all got to combat racism but this is the absolute wrong way to go about it. It also insults white working class people from disadvantaged backgrounds. The whole purpose of children learning is to learn, not for some kind of political Soviet indoctrination session”.

Fellow Conservative Sir John Hayes said: “Most parents will be horrified. If you tell some children they are privileged, you must by definition tell some others that they are not, that they are somehow disadvantaged or underprivileged. It is destructive to the welfare of children”.

RESIGNATIONS

The concept of ‘institutional racism’ and ‘white privilege’ is promoted by a range of left-wing and black activist groups such as Black Lives Matter (BLM) and ANTIFA. BLM’s Co-Founder, Patrisse Cullors, was exposed last week for having allegedly used some of BLM’s vast cash hoardings, estimated at nearly £100 million, to buy herself another luxury house, costing over £1 million, in additon to the three she already owns. BLM front-line activists have denounced her as a ‘fraud’ and demanded an audit of the group’s finances. Financier George Soros openly admits to having given large grants to BLM.

The current rage for promoting training in ‘white privilege’ has now reached the National Trust (NT). After many volunteers left the NT two years ago when it embarked on a programme of raising the profile of homosexual former aristocrats and emphasisng the role many stately home owners played in Britain’s slave trade, another wave of resignations occurred this week when its ‘woke’ ruling committee demanded all volunteers submit to ‘racism retraining’ before being allowed to continue volunteering. Even NT staff who have no contact with the public must undergo the training, after which they must take a short exam. If they ‘fail’ the exam, staff and volunteers are told “If you wish to appeal, you must leave your true identity at the door”.

Geeeez Tony, this makes me so angry!

Your illustration is tantamount to conditioning, like introducing sex education to pre-school and junior school pupils.

Children instinctively have no conception of skin colour, religious beliefs, sex, cruelty, environmental issues - or any other contemporary societal concerns.  They are innocent, vulnerable and totally reliant on adults to guide them on the path of life.

To feed their little minds with hatred and confusion is nothing short of institutionalized child abuse.  This is of course nothing new, children have been the victims of horrendous abuse throughout the ages but I would like to think 21st century thinking and attitudes have crossed the boundaries of past stifled cruelty.

Tell that to the likes of Greta Thunberg, who through the medium of exploitation of a mental condition, thinks young people should be robbed of the happiest days of their lives by instilling their little vulnerable minds with hatred.

After all, it is hatred in one form or another!

Sincere thanks for your contribution.

Joe Biden’s woke Left-wing agenda is a catastrophe for the free world

The so-called centrist is giving free rein to radical activists whose ideas will soon reach British shores

Allister Heath - 14 April 2021 • 9:30pm

He was meant to be a new Bill Clinton, a centrist Democrat who would restore the sullied American republic to a semblance of its former glory after the Trump interregnum. There would be a shift to the Left under Joe Biden, of course, but his election would be no revolutionary moment, merely a return to normality.

Biden would govern with decorum, embrace decarbonisation, spend more on America’s decrepit infrastructure and take on Russia. His would be a technocratic, Davos-friendly agenda, his allies told gullible centre-Right commentators: crucially, he wouldn’t allow the socialist-nihilist wing of the Democratic Party anywhere near the levers of power. In some areas, Biden the bridge-builder would continue Trump’s policies, albeit more competently. Antony Blinken, the secretary of state, has rightly described China’s persecution of the Uighurs as “an effort to commit genocide”. The US’s withdrawal from Afghanistan was first announced by Donald Trump.

But while some of Biden’s decisions have been sensible, most haven’t. Three months after his inauguration, his administration is shaping up to be the most Left-wing since Franklin D Roosevelt. Out of weakness or lack of focus, Biden has allowed his party’s radicals too much sway. The consequences will be disastrous not just for America but also for Britain.

We live in a globalised world where politics has become an international fashion statement. Ideological tribes cross borders, at least when it comes to virtue-signalling, over-educated graduates desperate to latch on to the latest feel-good trend. Ideas that begin in Washington make their way to our own Parliament, offices and streets. We too will pay the price for Biden’s mistakes; and America’s struggles will become our battles, even if they shouldn’t be. Biden’s first blunder has been to give free rein to the woke revolutionaries. Their ideology is a fusion of post-modernism, Marxism, Freudianism, critical race theory, gender studies, intersectionality and much else besides, and the brew is toxic, explosive and potentially fatal to Western democracy and capitalism. It detests rationality, the rule of law and even the presumption of innocence. It is obsessed with race and gender, assumes extreme amounts of never-ending exploitation, posits that progress is impossible and rejects the liberal, meritocratic, colour-blind approach that has done so much to improve society and combat racism since the Fifties. It claims to believe in “social justice” but rejects the very concept of a functioning polity and the possibility of objective, enlightenment-style justice. It considers free speech to be a form of violence, and assumes that anybody who disagrees is guilty of false consciousness and, as such, deserves to be cancelled as a dangerous heretic.

It is already destroying American universities, and now threatens to debilitate American business. Its next target are US cities, where idiotic mayors are allowing crime to run riot. The proper approach to the disgraceful racism and violence that characterises so much of US law-enforcement is to reform forces and stamp out hateful practices; yet the woke lobby prefers to demand the police’s abolition, an absurd, utopian approach advocated by the likes of Alexandria Ocaso-Cortez, a prominent Congresswoman.

Biden is no fan of AOC, but he is failing to confront the woke insurgency, and in some cases is even fuelling it. His decision to set up a committee to consider expanding the size of the Supreme Court – and thus to eliminate its conservative majority – is a scandalous concession. It would be tantamount to a constitutional coup, as would another increasingly popular Democratic proposal, granting statehood to Washington DC and Puerto Rico to gerrymander the Senate with more Democrats.

This reflects the woke idea that conservative majorities are illegitimate, and that rigging democracy to eliminate them is acceptable. In this respect, Biden’s attitude is just as bad as Trump’s own despicable rejection of democracy last year. Any assault on the Supreme Court or Senate would poison American politics for decades. And why would China or Russia embrace democracy when they see far-Left activists make a mockery of the US constitution? We are fortunate that Boris Johnson’s government is the most anti-woke in the English-speaking world. But America’s behaviour will encourage our cultural institutions, universities and big businesses to further defy the Government.

Biden is also veering sharp Left on the economy, increasing corporate and personal taxes. His Democratic allies at local and state level are doing the same. The compound effect threatens to turn into a major supply-side shock. New York and California are being hammered, with companies and wealthy individuals fleeing to Texas and Florida. This nonsense has already contaminated the rest of the world. The huge, destructive increase in Britain’s corporation tax announced at the Budget was justified on the basis of what America is doing.

We will also feel the heat from Biden’s increase in spending. Much of it isn’t really on infrastructure, but it will push up aggregate demand just as the economy bounces back after Covid. US inflation and interest rates might go up, with a knock-on effect on our own cost of borrowing: bad news for Rishi Sunak.

Iran is another disastrous blind spot for Biden. He has made reviving President Obama’s ill-fated nuclear deal one of his priorities, at best risking another nuclear arms race and at worst a horrific conflagration. It cannot make sense to trust a manipulative Iranian regime that, when it isn’t persecuting its religious or sexual minorities, women, youth or dissidents, specialises in enabling terrorism, funding wars against its Arab neighbours and openly threatening Israel with nuclear annihilation. Iran has already notified the International Atomic Energy Agency that it wants to start 60 per cent uranium enrichment. Why is Biden so blasé about the risk of nuclear proliferation? Again, this will have an impact on all of our politics: Biden’s hopeless appeasement of Iran will delight the Foreign Office and the EU.

Most British Tories welcomed Biden. But now that it is clear that his flagship policies are bad for Britain, they need to stop being so starry-eyed, and learn to ignore the tidal wave of madness emanating from America.

There is an arrogance by the rich to assume that Western ways are something to aspire to.

Oprah Winfrey makes my teeth itch.

I suppose that makes me a racist.

The only person of colour who could have attended aired her dirty laundry on global tv to another person of colour and called the Royal Family racist!

Is it the Royal Family's fault if there are no other people of colour in the family at this moment in time?

Why do the left make everything about box ticking?

The Royal Family are clearly racist because:

They allowed Prince Harry to marry a woman of colour and have children
They allowed a racist wedding with a black preacher, black gospel choir, black guests including her mother and Oprah (who later turned out be useful).

If Markle is so anti-racism why did she marry a prince who wore a Nazi fancy dress costume and called one of his army colleagues a 'P*ki'?

Why did Markle have surgery on her wide african-american nose, and straighten her afro hair, and refer to herself as caucasian on one of her profiles?

The world is nuddy bluts.

Because he doesn't eat jerk chicken or have any black friends...

Oh, and don't get me started on Anne Boleyn played by a black actress.

Why?

Shouldn't at least half of the cast be BAME if they want to tick the diversity box and rewrite history?

There will always be a reason for people such as Meghan Markle to cry racism and it will bleed into the hearts and minds of ordinary people who just want to make a family and earn enough to make it possible regardless of skin colour.

What Markle is doing damages people of every skin tone.

Yep  yes

Because there are hardly any successful actresses of colour in Hollywood are there Megs?

She wasn't even an actress in Hollywood, and is very unlikely to ever be - she was a cable actress in a little known programme in Canada.

Her biggest acting role has been in the Royal Family from Day One - every time she makes an appearance it's like she's adding it to her cv...for Hollywood.

There would have been a woman of colour at the funeral of course, but she said she couldn't attend because she's pregnant, or didn't want to be the centre of attention, whichever reason you choose to believe.

It's unfortunate and inappropriate that Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice fell in love with, and chose to marry, Caucasians - what were they thinking? They should have known better than to do such a racist thing in today's woke society knowing full well that Prince Philip's funeral would be imminent. And then Jeremy Vine would not have been victimised and blasted for his race-baiting comment.

Clearly Eugenie and Beatrice are the culprits in this sensitive issue and the Royal Family should learn from their mistakes when other members choose to marry in future.

It seems to me, this woke culture is not only about racism and other similar disadvantaged groups but also feminism.

Why do women wish to overpower manhood?  Don't they realise they, women, are the power behind every super power, middle status and domestic situation?

Women have ruled the world since Adam donated a rib to his enslaver Eve, metaphorically speaking.  They may not be named, out there as proclaimed heroines but nonetheless, everyone knows that women rule the roost - surprisingly enough even in the Islamic world.  Never think otherwise!

By striving for misguided equality and dominance, they lose that independent power they've always had over man.

Behind every successful powerful man is woman!

This "woke" nonsense drives me up the wall.   angry

It seems that nowadays, people cry "racist" at the drop of a hat and as soon as they do, everyone else must sit up and obey.  Diversity training, unconscious-bias training, what a load of claptrap.

And all it does is undermine true racism.

It's the same with feminism, the "#MeToo" movement (which is also, in my view, a load of claptrap).  The slightest innocent touch or playful word is now construed in the same vein as rape, and all it does is undermine real sexual assault/rape.

I do not - and will not ever - consider myself to be a feminist.  I'm probably anti-feminist!  Because all it seems to stand for now is "men-hating".  I feel sorry for white heterosexual men in this day-and-age.  They must be the most put-upon members of society.

The worst thing about all this "woke"-ness is when people apologise for having perfectly valid opinions.  I don't object if someone (a celebrity or whoever) makes a public comment that is deemed to be "wrong".  But they go down massively in my estimation if they later apologise for it.  Nobody (or mostly anyway) stands their ground anymore, they always give in.

Oh and another thing which probably fits in the "woke" vein - trans nonsense.  I strongly object to being referred to as a "cis-woman".  I am a woman, pure and simple.  I do not need any qualifiers on that because mine is the "normal" status.  If somebody wants to identify as the opposite sex or as "non-binary/gender fluid" confused or even as a brussels sprout then they are perfectly welcome to.  But they shouldn't expect the rest of us to play along.

All this makes my blood - as the saying goes - boil.

I remember back in the day when all this equality malarkey hit the scene big time.

At the workplace, the filing cabinet was replaced by a room full of nobodies, all with delusions of grandeur scrambling under the name of Human Resources. The primary function of this new found 'authority', for that is what they claimed to be, was to ensure equality - to give minority groups a fair chance and equality within the wokeplace and without in some instances!

Little demigods were they.

From that point on, corporate policy ruled that a little Human Resourcerer sit-in on every interview for staffing. On one occasion I was pulled-up by a sourceress, during the interview - in the presence of the interviewee, because she said .... my question was sexist angry !

Then came the various sub-committees formed as a platform for minority groups to 'have their say'. Black (not white) - Disabled - Gays - Lesbians - Religious - Malingerers .... but that's for another day!

What a waste of time and money.

Quite.

It's one thing giving everyone a fair chance, but this nonsense that there must be x percentage of women or x percentage of black people etc just gets my goat. People should get a job based solely on their suitability for the position, not on how many boxes can be ticked.

The Woke Cult: Have Your Say Empty Re: The Woke Cult: Have Your Say

If you want to encourage racism, or any other 'ism for that matter, the best way is to introduce a zero tolerance policy.

Children are generally unaware of causing offence by what they say or do, to an adult mind the words of a child can be seen as embarrassing but to the child they speak as they see. They don't mean to be abusive, they are just kids doing what they do best. That's where parental guidance comes in!

'Now now Daisy, you can't go around calling your sister a big fat black cow'

Introduce anti-racist policies in schools and you will teach children to be racist from a very early age. Little difference from teaching children about sex and gender disparity, without that encouragement kids would doubtless not give the matter a thought but fill their little minds with something new, they will be curious to know more.

Let kids grow, develop and mature at their own pace.

‘Woke weaning’ is coming to a school near you - and parents are too scared to question it

Certain US schools are taking the sledgehammer approach to race and equality, and teachers and parents are too afraid to speak up against it

Imagine your little boy coming home from school and announcing that he is “bad” because he is white, “and that makes him racist and an oppressor”. Imagine a school where white teachers are told, as part of their strident Diversity, Equality and Inclusion (DEI) programme, that they have been guilty of “spirit-murdering” black children, a school where traditional “white” texts such as To Kill A Mockingbird and Little Women have been banned, in favour of literature with titles such as Racism, Antiracism And You, and Yaqui Delgado Wants To Kick Your A--.

Imagine a world in which “woke weaning” is the dominant educational ideology – one you, as a parent, are too scared to question.

That world was blown wide open in a US-based exposé published on Sunday – one in which, tellingly, not a single parent from any of the schools mentioned wanted to be named. “There is a growing group of parents who are desperately unhappy with how things are going,” said the mother of one child at Harvard-Westlake in Los Angeles, the £31,000-a-year school of choice for the kids of Hollywood’s elite. “But we talk in secret.”

Parents of pupils at New York’s Grace Church High School also chose to remain anonymous as they decried the institution’s 12-page Grace Inclusive Language Guide, which suggested that phrases such as “Mum and Dad” and “boys and girls” be avoided, as the school works to “do more than ban hateful language”. Because to speak out against the narrative being perpetuated at the San Diego Unified School District, for example – where, according to one whistleblower, teachers attended a training course in which they were told schools “don’t see blacks as human” – is to risk everything.

That world could only exist in the US, right? In La La Land and the kind of liberal American states so famous for their extremist stances that they sometimes appear to be spoofing themselves?

Wrong. If this exposé into the phenomenon known as “woke weaning” tells us anything, it’s that we can no longer afford to feel the smug enjoyment we once did at reports such as these from across the pond. Because it’s a world we’re all living in now, and the seeds of woke weaning have already been sewn here.

It was three years ago, after all, that after questioning on this page the extreme identity politics narrative being propagated in schools, I received some of the most impassioned emails I have ever read from Telegraph readers. Those emails came from doctors, psychologists and teachers, but most of all from parents who were questioning the reading material being given to children as young as three. Books such as Michael Hall’s Red: A Crayon’s Story – about a blue crayon mistakenly labelled red who is suffering an identity crisis – and Sara Savage’s Are You A Boy Or Are You A Girl?

One teacher emailed to tell me of the “transgender organisations coming to talk in schools like mine and giving really aggressive advice”. Another got in touch to say that many school staff members were “too scared to speak up”. All stressed that they wished to remain anonymous.

And when I asked a London-based friend whether she might consider speaking out on the record about the “talk” her son was given in the wake of Sarah Everard’s tragic killing – a talk in which all the Year 7 boys were taken aside and urged to “respect girls and women” – she declined. “Of course children should be educated about misogyny and harassment,” she told me, “but the narrative seemed to be that boys were, by definition, not just ‘bad’, but capable of extreme evil. That’s a lot for an 11-year-old to take on.”

Woke weaning may have started with identity politics here in the UK, but it took hold more broadly with race after the horrifying death of George Floyd. While it was imperative for schools to address the topic, the school governor and former teacher Calvin Robinson – who is himself mixed race – warned against the perils of critical race theory in this paper last year. Presenting “unconscious bias” and “implicit racism” as “unchallenged facts”, he wrote, not only fully met the definition of indoctrination – “the process of teaching a person or group to accept a set of beliefs uncritically” – but risked doing “more harm than good” in the long run.

I thought about what that long run should look like when my daughter’s school sent us all a letter about the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) last month. Right there, listed in the general principles, were “Respect for the views of the child: every child has the right to express their views, feelings and wishes in all matters affecting them”, and “Freedom of expression: every child must be free to express their thoughts and opinions and to access all kinds of information, as long as it is within the law.”

No parent should have to explain to their child why those rights have been taken away – much less that they no longer apply in adulthood.

The Beano to replace character Fatty with Freddy to stop children using name as insult for overweight peers

It is Britain’s longest-running children’s comic which brought to life enduring characters such as Dennis the Menace and Minnie the Minx.

However, The Beano has now decided to stop using the name of one of its most popular personalities to avoid offending young readers.

From this week's issue (number 4087), the character Frederick Brown will no longer be referred to as 'Fatty" in The Bash Street Kids comic strip.

Instead he will exclusively be called Freddy - or perhaps Frederick if he is being told off by his mother.

The creators made the change 67 years after the character was first introduced in a bid to ensure fans are not upset if they are overweight, or to inadvertently encourage youngsters to poke fun at their peers who struggle with their weight.

Mike Stirling, editorial director of Beano Studios, said: "Kids come in all shapes and sizes, and we absolutely celebrate that. We don't want to risk someone using it in a mean way. The time is right to revert back to Freddy.

“We've recently received a number of letters from kids asking us why Frederick Brown was called Fatty, by himself and his classmates. Although it's always been used affectionately, and never pejoratively, we agreed it's time it changed. Freddy's mum - and teacher - may still sometimes address him as 'Frederick', whenever he's in trouble, which for a Bash Street Kid is not uncommon.

"Much like in 1954, when The Bash Street Kids were created based upon the hilarious antics spotted in the school yard outside of the Beano office, kids are still the inspiration for our characters and storylines and it's incredibly important to us that they see themselves and their lives reflected in Beanotown".

Run by Dundee-based publishing house DC Thomson since 1938, The Beano and its stablemate The Dandy are among the few surviving relics of Britain’s post-war comics boom.

The Bash Street Kids characters in The Beano, illustrated by David Sutherland, are notoriously unruly nine-year-old pupils at Bash Street School.
He is drawn as a morbidly obese, balding boy who carries around a bag of cakes. His prized possession is an apron signed by veteran television chef Mary Berry and his motto is 'Everything is delicious', according to his character profile.

Mr Stirling insisted that Freddy will still be drawn in the same way, and won't be depicted thinner.

"All the characters overindulge at times, and Freddy is no different," he said.

The Beano's move received a mixed reaction, with some arguing it was overzealous to drop the name Fatty and questioning how much of a role the comic could have really played in encouraging children to use the term as an insult for their overweight peers.

Jacob Rees-Mogg, MP and Leader of the House of Commons, said: "I expect it is just publicity seeking - otherwise it is comically woke."

The Woke Cult: Have Your Say Telemm69

Others said it was a positive step, with one parent claiming the name had always "jarred" with her nine-year-old.

Debbie Watson, founder of the eating disorder charity Wednesday’s Child, said it was helpful for popular publications to reflect on the message sent out by their content.

“Any move which makes creators of literary, visual or social content consider how they are potentially impacting the self-esteem and mental wellbeing of their audience can only be seen as a good thing," she said.

"While we would never say that an eating disorder is solely caused by derogatory comments about a person’s size, it’s absolutely true that many adults we help, and indeed children, have found themselves triggered into developing poor relationships with food in a bid to escape the cruel labels they received.

"It seems only right that long-running publications like The Beano should want to reflect on what their characters are called, what message that sends, and whether it is appropriate for the kind of narrative we would want all young people to be using when talking about their friends or classmates.

"There is an opportunity in this move by the comic to ensure that they rethink not only the name of the character, but also how the storylines reflect the shape and size of all those who are part of The Bash Street Kids, because, as an eating disorder organisation, we continually feel the need to reiterate the message that people of all sizes and shapes can have a devastating eating disorder."

How Cambridge is being turned into Xi’s China

By presuming white people cannot be victims of racism, Cambridge's radical 'anti-racist' doctrine is itself racist

Charles Moore 25 May 2021 • 6:45am

On Sunday, I studied the website of Report+Support, a new “reporting tool” offered to students by Cambridge University by the vice-chancellor, Professor Stephen Toope. It is based on a template already used by some other universities. It invites you to denounce anyone you like in the university for “racism, discrimination and micro-aggressions”.

The media have already reported the list of “micro-aggressions” provided. One is “raising eyebrows when a black member of staff or student is speaking”. Others are “referring to a woman as a ‘girl’” and making “backhanded compliments”.

It is impossible not to laugh, but one should not doubt the seriousness of the operation. Prof Toope, who has made repeated speeches in praise of Xi Jinping’s China, is developing methods of denunciation of which the People’s Republic would be proud.

There are two ways in which you can accuse people, says the Cambridge website. The university authorities provide a secure collection point and promise to act on what you tell them: you can “report anonymously” or “report with contacts”. If you do the former, you can give the name of the person you are accusing; but neither that person nor the authorities will ever know your name or be able to check the truth of your claim.

Thus you could allege that anyone – let us say Prof Toope himself – had committed the micro-aggression of “asking a black person if that is their ‘natural’ hair”. If you did so, this would be put on Prof Toope’s file and could be used against him at any time. The opportunities for malice are limitless. They are scarcely less so if you “report with contacts”, giving your name in confidence: you would still be free to denounce Prof Toope’s supposed racism or sexism, secure in the knowledge that you could injure him, but he could never know that it was you who did so. And by the way, even if it was not your hair on which Prof Toope commented micro- aggressively, but that of a third party, you could still report it, without consulting that person first. This process is the web equivalent of the ancient habit of sticking pins in the effigy of someone you hate.

I wonder if these procedures are compatible with the Data Protection Act. I know they are incompatible with that basic principle of justice: the presumption of innocence.

***

Perhaps even more extraordinary is the definition of racism with which Report + Support begins. Here it is, in full: “Racism is a system of oppression, woven into the fabric of societies, institutions, processes, procedures, people’s values, beliefs, attitudes and behaviour. It is a system of advantage that sets whiteness as the norm, manifesting in societies’ valuing and promoting (implicitly or explicitly) being white. It is a system where people from racially minoritised backgrounds are more likely than white people to face multiple obstacles in life, from being targets of direct or indirect discrimination and micro-aggressions.” Racism, in short, is a strictly white phenomenon. Prof Toope, and whoever wrote the definition for him, seem unaware that such a view must itself be racist.

A further consequence of this doctrine is that white people persecuting other white people are not racists. As a Jewish friend says to me, a little grimly, “The idea that you can’t be racist against white people (because they are already part of the ‘norm’) will be of great comfort to my relatives who were suffocated to death at Auschwitz.”

By the same logic, I suppose, black people cannot be racist towards other black people, so Shona killings of Ndebele or Hutu killings of Tutsis must be attributable to something else.

In a nutshell, a white man running a great university has decided that his own skin colour is intrinsically bad. “Whiteness” is prima facie evidence of racism - almost a micro-aggression in itself - inevitably giving rise to “inappropriate behaviour”, which must be reported.

To assist him in his task, Prof Toope recently appointed Dr Nicola Rollock as his Special Adviser on Race. She is one of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Next Generation Trailblazers. Her first book, The Racial Code, will be published later this year. Perhaps it was she who provided Prof Toope with his tragi-comic examples.

Yesterday, there was a new development. The Report + Support website was taken down. Eventually the Vice-Chancellor put out a statement saying that “certain ancillary material” had been “included in error” because it went “beyond the approved policy framework”. That material would now be removed. At the time of writing, we wait eagerly to learn which item of this list is not micro-aggressive and which isn’t. The difference will provide an interesting insight into Toopist thought.

A revolt is brewing. At the end of last year, Cambridge academics decisively rejected a definition of free speech pushed on them by Prof Toope. He wanted it to include “respect” for views with which one disagrees - a demand which, when you think about it, is often impossible. Led by an able young philosopher, Arif Ahmed, they replaced the word “respect” with “tolerance”, and prevailed.

Fired by this experience, the rebels now have an active nucleus, hundreds-strong. Their leaders are meeting this week to concert resistance and, if necessary, a legal challenge. The irony of the situation is that, in all probability, Prof Toope’s Report + Support contravenes, by its attack on white people, the Equality Act 2010.
