So they expect everyone to keep on suspecting Brückner forever...

I fail to understand why you draw that conclusion.

The interview appears to ratify the position of Operation Grange, who incidentally do not accord with the German stance.

Retired senior Met Police detective warns there's no 'firm evidence' that Christian Brueckner's abducted Madeleine McCann and says German police cannot rely on 'hearsay' on 14th anniversary of her disappearance

A former police chief says there's no 'firm evidence' against the man suspected of abducting Madeleine McCann - despite his reported confession to a friend.

In June last year, Christian Brückner was identified as a prime suspect in the case of Madeleine, who disappeared from an apartment in 2007 while her family was on holiday in the resort of Praia da Luz, Portugal.

He is currently serving a seven-year sentence in Kiel jail in northern Germany for raping a 72-year-old American in 2005 and allegedly confessed during a drinking session that he 'knew all about' what had happened to Maddie.

Brückner allegedly shared details about Maddie's abduction with a friend over a drink on the tenth anniversary of her disappearance when her face appeared on a German pub's TV screen in 2017.

Appearing on This Morning today, the 14th anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance, retired Metropolitan Police DCI Sue Hill said there's a lot of 'hearsay' surrounding Brückner and that German police need forensic evidence.

'German police have their prime suspect and they're investigating that, but there's a lot of hearsay evidence', said Hill.

'German police have made appeals about this guy who lived out in Portugal, Christian Brückner, and the problem is, it's all well and good it appears he's told somebody he was involved in Maddie's murder, but the problem is, unless you have firm evidence, forensic evidence you can suspect.

'Sadly over many years, I went to families "I think I can tell you who has killed your child, but I'll never be able to prove it". Because unless you have evidence - but the good thing is that guy is in prison for a different offence, for rape.'

Hill went on to question why German police have been so forthright with their investigations into Brückner.

'Why have they been so public?', she asked. 'German police have been very public, it's suggested that he told somebody on Maddie's tenth anniversary of when she went missing, over a drink.

'Are they trying to get him to talk? I don't know why they would have done that, he will be alerted. Why would he ever admit to taking a child and killing a child, knowing you're going to go away for a very long time?

'So I always think you keep those things up your sleeve, so you don't give away everything you've got.'

When asked whether she thought his confession was just bragging and bravado, she went on: 'I think in his case, when you look at his background, the offending behaviour. He's got the means, the motive, he was in Portugal but you can't assume anything, you have to actually get that evidence to support.'

Brückner spent 12 years living in the Algarve dealing drugs, burgling holiday homes and in 2005 raped a US-born pensioner followed a break-in. Hill said any other information on his criminal offences could be essential on 'keeping other people safe'.

'Today, I think what German police are hoping is - he had a camper van back in 2007 he was living in Portugal for a number of years, has anyone got information?

'Another thing, if he committed any other criminal offences and they suspect it's him that took Maddie, if they can keep him in prison for other offences, at least it keeps other people safe.'

The former police chief appeared to mark the 18th birthday of Maddie and says Operation Grange is still an active missing person enquiry.

'We'd love to find Madeleine but I think the reality is 14 years on, it's every parents worst nightmare, nobody knows exactly where Madeleine is', said Hill.

'Operation Grange, the Met police officers working on it call it a missing person enquiry because there is no firm evidence Madeleine is not alive and you follow the evidence and intelligence.'

When asked whether the police will continue their investigation into the abduction, she said: 'As long as there are lines of inquiry and investigation to pursue.

'At the end of this is a little girl, who took her? And while that person remains undetected, they pose a risk to little children, someone took her and we need to find out who did it.'

What threatens  Christian B. should he be tried and convicted in the Hazel Behan case?
BILD asked the criminal lawyer Matthias Waldraff: "If the suspect is convicted of rape again, he must expect preventive detention."
That would mean that Christian B. would be locked up forever - regardless of whether he can be proven to have murdered little Maddie or not.

Oh well, if BILD say so then it must be true roll !

That's like asking to believe everything reported by the Sun, or any of it's kinsfolk.

Rule of thumb .... never believe what you read in the gutter press without fact checking through a reliable source.  Even then, double check with another reliable source - the information highway differs vastly from one source to another.

@Verdi

You chose the word “Propaganda’ in a previous post.

That is all it is to me.

They are all in it together as far as I am concerned...

All part of ‘the wider Agenda’ no doubt.

I think it best to disregard the PR surrounding the death of Madeleine McCann and to focus on why the police in two countries have been unable to fulfil their duties.

It would be great to disregard the comments of the British Press about Christian B, but they just cannot stop coming up with more stories.

Would the Chief Prosecutor in Braunschweig at least confirm or deny  he has even spoken to Mr Pisa of the Sun or not?

German police had close ties with Wirecard, report shows
Disgraced payments provider issued credit cards used by officers during criminal investigations

Wirecard crashed into insolvency last summer after it was revealed that €1.9bn of corporate cash did not exist © Andreas Gebert/Bloomberg

Germany’s top police agency co-operated closely over several years with Wirecard until late 2020, showing the extent to which the disgraced payments provider was intertwined with the country’s law enforcement establishment.

Wirecard, once a high-flying start-up seen as one of Germany’s rare technology success stories, crashed into insolvency last summer after it was revealed that €1.9bn of corporate cash did not exist. The scandal, which is one of Germany’s biggest postwar accounting frauds, continues to reverberate as it is probed by a parliamentary inquiry in Berlin.

Wirecard’s former chief operating officer Jan Marsalek, who according to people familiar with the matter had ties to the secret services in Austria and Russia, fled Germany last summer and is on Interpol’s most wanted list.

A special investigator, who was appointed by parliament to examine Wirecard’s links to law enforcement authorities, has established that from 2013 the Munich-based payments group had close ties to Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), whose operatives used Wirecard credit cards during criminal investigations.

Email correspondence between Wirecard and the BKA, seen by the Financial Times, suggests that the company issued at least some of the credit cards under fake identities that were then used by police officers to pay bills during criminal investigations. Wirecard waived its usual fee and provided the cards free of charge.

The special investigator concluded that about a third of all credit cards used by BKA officers in criminal investigations during this period were issued by Wirecard.

“We will become the BKA’s house bank at one point,” Wirecard executive Alexander von Knoop wrote in 2014 in an email to colleagues seen by the FT. There is no suggestion that he was personally involved in the issuance of the fake-ID credit cards.

“In hindsight, the BKA units — surely unwittingly — put the fox in charge of the henhouse,” the special investigator’s report, which was seen by the FT, concluded. Wolfgang Wieland, the special investigator, noted that the BKA was in charge of fighting money laundering and organised crime and should have scrutinised “its partners more critically”.

Wieland observed that Germany’s foreign intelligence service, the BND, also used credit cards issued by Wirecard, though to a much lesser extent than the BKA.

Wirecard had been the subject of repeated allegations of money laundering and balance sheet manipulation since at least 2015. Munich prosecutors now accuse former senior executives at the company of having run a criminal enterprise that embezzled billions.

Wieland noted that Wirecard “acted properly” when it was working with the BKA and that there was no evidence that the company abused the payments data generated. However, the special investigator noted that the collaboration helped the company to improve its image as it sought to reposition itself as a reputable partner for government agencies.

Fabio De Masi, an MP for the leftwing Die Linke party, said that the BKA’s ties to Wirecard were “embarrassing and absurd”, arguing that they had put Germany’s national security interests “at risk”.

The BKA said in a statement that it is supported in carrying out its duties by banks, which in specific cases can involve the provision of bank accounts and credit cards. “In the past, this was the case for Wirecard Bank AG . . . as well as for other lenders,” the agency said, declining to comment further on internal workflows.

The special investigator declined to comment.

MADDIE TIP-OFF Madeleine McCann cops given dramatic new evidence against prime suspect Christian B

EXCLUSIVE

Nick Pisa
12 May 2021, 22:00Updated: 12 May 2021, 22:40

MADELEINE McCann cops have been given dramatic new evidence strengthening the case against prime suspect Christian B.

Convicted rapist Christian B, 44, in jail in Germany, was identified by authorities there last June as being the man responsible for her abduction.

Speaking to The Sun last night, German prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters said of the breakthrough: “We have gathered new evidence that adds further to the case we are building against our main suspect.

“I’m afraid I cannot tell you what it is but it strengthens our work.

“We are still building the case and at some time in the future we shall share the details with the suspect and his lawyer — but now is not the time.

“I cannot disclose the type of evidence we have been given, it is not forensic I can tell you that but it is new circumstantial evidence which all adds to the working theory that he is the man responsible.”

German police have said they have “concrete evidence” Christian B murdered Madeleine.

She was three when she vanished from the Algarve holiday apartment she was staying at with parents Kate and Gerry in 2007.

Mr Wolters said: “We have always insisted that the man we identified as the main suspect is the man we believe committed the crime and we are not looking for anyone else.

“I am optimistic that we will solve this case.”

And he added: “We have found no evidence that suggests he is not guilty of this crime and we have found a lot of evidence that suggests he is guilty but I am forbidden to go into these details.”

Investigators are hopeful they can charge Christian B by the end of the summer and last week The Sun revealed a key witness who tipped off German police is to take part in a reconstruction in Praia da Luz where Madeleine went missing.

The operation was due to have taken place in January but was postponed because of Covid restrictions and is part of a planned three-way summit between the Met, German police and Portuguese cops.

Mr Wolters added: “Since we are dependent on the help of other countries, especially Portugal, the investigations unfortunately take longer than in other proceedings in which the investigations are only conducted in Germany.

“This is mainly due to the fact that we have to make very formalistic requests for legal assistance, which are very time-consuming to process.”

Christian B is serving seven years for the rape of a 72-year-old American woman in Praia da Luz in 2005 two years before Madeleine vanished.

He is also being probed over other sex crimes there.

Madeleine’s parents Kate and Gerry promised that they would not “give up” on finding their daughter in a tribute to her on her 18th birthday.

The Leicestershire couple wrote “Happy 18th Birthday Madeleine” on the official Find Madeleine Campaign Facebook page.

It showed a cherished last photo of her beaming under a sun hat.

MADELEINE McCann cops have been given dramatic new evidence strengthening the case against prime suspect Christian B.
No they haven't. This is only repetition of reports over the past eleven months.

Speaking to The Sun last night, German prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters said of the breakthrough: “We have gathered new evidence that adds further to the case we are building against our main suspect.
No he didn't. German prosecutors do not speak to British tabloids, be it day or night.

Mr Wolters said: “We have always insisted that the man we identified as the main suspect is the man we believe committed the crime and we are not looking for anyone else.
It's not within your remit to be looking for anyone else, any more than it's within the powers of the British police The Portuguese police are the primary force investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

Investigators are hopeful they can charge Christian B by the end of the summer and last week The Sun revealed a key witness who tipped off German police is to take part in a reconstruction in Praia da Luz where Madeleine went missing.
Middle of last year you said you were hopeful you could charge Brueckner by the end of the year, at the end of the year you said the beginning of 2021, at the beginning of 2021 you said in the spring - now in the spring you say at the end of summer. ?

The operation was due to have taken place in January but was postponed because of Covid restrictions and is part of a planned three-way summit between the Met, German police and Portuguese cops.
Every heard of zoom video conferencing?

Mr Wolters added: “Since we are dependent on the help of other countries, especially Portugal, the investigations unfortunately take longer than in other proceedings in which the investigations are only conducted in Germany.
Yes of course, the incompetent Portuguese police force.

THE PARENTS of Madeleine McCann today denied a German prosecutor's claims they had been sent a letter telling them she is dead.

In an on-the-record interview, prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters said: “We have written to the McCanns" to tell them "Madeleine is dead".

Wolters said the letter spoke of "concrete evidence" which proved Madeleine's death, but did not go into what that evidence was.

He did not say whether the Kate or Gerry McCann had received the letter yet, or whether it was sent directly to them, or to their representatives.

German national Christian B, who is currently serving time for drug offences, was revealed as the prime suspect by German prosecutors - who say that they have "evidence" that the toddler was killed.

It comes as cops continue their probe into what happened when Madeleine went missing in 2007.

German authorities have revealed the 43-year old, who is in prison in Kiel on drug offences, was being investigated on suspicion of Madeleine's murder.

This comes after reports by German newspaper Frankfurter NeuerPresse claiming prosecutors are investigating if Christian B has any connections to the killing of Tristan Brübach, who was murdered and mutilated in March 1998.

The young boy, 13, had his throat cut and parts of his body removed in a sickening attack and was found dead in a tunnel.

“ANY CONNECTIONS?”

German authorities are probing if the main suspect in the Madeleine McCann investigation is linked to the rape and murder of a 13-year-old boy, it is reported.

According to German newspaper Frankfurter NeuerPresse, prosecutors are investigating if Christian B has any connections to the killing of Tristan Brübach, who was murdered and mutilated in March 1998.

He was found dead in a tunnel after being brutally maimed. The young boy had his throat cut and parts of his body removed in a sickening attack.

Earlier this month German police named Christian B, 43, as a suspect over the disappearance of Madeleine, who they believed to be dead.

Noah Kruger, chief prosecutor in Frankfurt, told German newspaper Bild: “We are checking whether there are any connections between the two cases.

“In itself, however, this is not unusual, but routine. The sequence of events and the E-fit from the Tristan case could be similar.”

16TH JUN 2020, 15:52
'JEOPARDISE THE INVESTIGATION'

German authorities believe revealing the evidence too soon might damage the chances of their main suspect ever coming to trial.

Prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters said: “We have concrete evidence that our suspect has killed Madeleine.

“British police have been informed but don’t have all the evidence we have. The results of our investigation have been shared but not every detail has been passed to Scotland Yard.

“I don’t think the McCanns have been informed of all the details but they know the results.”

The McCanns’ Portuguese lawyer Rogerio Alves has called on German police to share the evidence they claim to have about her death.

But Mr Wolters added: “I understand what the McCann family lawyer is saying. I sympathise with the parents but if we reveal more details to them it might jeopardise the investigation.”

16TH JUN 2020, 15:41
WHO IS SUSPECT CHRISTIAN B?

Madeleine McCann is believed to have died according to German police with Christian B now the prime suspect.

The German sex offender – who is currently serving time in prison for drug offences – is being investigated for Maddie's disappearance during her family holiday in Praia da Luz, Portugal in 2007.

The Metropolitan Police took over the investigation – known as Operation Grange – in 2011.

But they had hit several dead ends in the hunt to find the truth behind what happened to Madeleine in 2007.

However, new findings have revealed that a German prisoner is a “significant” suspect in the disappearance of the then toddler.

He has now been unmasked as 43-year-old drifter “Christian B”. He is a prolific burglar, who has previous convictions for sex crimes against young girls.

We cannot reveal his full identity due to Germany privacy laws.

The suspect was born in Germany in 1976 but moved to Portugal in his late teens.

16TH JUN 2020, 15:30
UNITED

Madeleine's parents Kate and Gerry are both practising Catholics who met in Glasgow in 1993.

Kate became a GP after studying medicine at the University of Dundee while Gerry has been a consultant cardiologist since 2005.

The couple got married in 1998 before having their first child, Madeleine, in 2003.

They also have twin children, a boy and a girl, who were born in 2005 and live in Rothley, Leicestershire.

Kate and Gerry had been married for nine years when Madeleine disappeared on the night of May 3, 2007.

EVIDENCE HOPE

A tiny scrap of blue material held in the vaults of a Portuguese forensic lab could provide the vital link between German suspect Christian B and Madeleine McCann.

Cops hope that continuing advances in DNA testing may yet provide a full profile for comparison with the 43-year-old convicted paedophile and rapist.

The material comes from the bedspread draped over the bed Madeleine was sleeping on when she was abducted from her family’s holiday apartment.

Tests uncovered a microscopic a DNA profile initially identified as semen, but later confirmed to be saliva.

Scientists were unable to obtain a full DNA profile at the time but have continued to work on it with new testing techniques.

The sample is being held at the National Institute of Legal, Medical and Forensic Science, in Coimbra, near Lisbon.

CHILLING CASEBOOK

Detectives in three countries are hoping that among the 400 recent calls they received on the 2007 disappearance of Madeleine McCann is one piece of evidence that will nail their prime suspect.

Pulitzer-prize nominated reporters Anthony Summers and Robbyn Swan spent years examining all the evidence for their book, Looking For Madeleine.

In an article for The Sun in 2017, on the tenth anniversary of the day the three-year old vanished from a holiday apartment in Portugal, the pair concluded that Madeleine HAD probably been abducted by a foreign paedophile burglar.

Last week German police revealed they believe Madeleine is dead but do not have enough evidence to nail paedophile Christian B for the killing.

16TH JUN 2020, 14:37
CAR CLUE

The prime suspect in the Madeleine McCann case had a secret third car in Portugal that could hold vital evidence, his ex has claimed.

According to Christian B’s British ex-lover, he also owned a Volkswagen estate at the time of Madeleine's disappearance in addition to the two vehicles being probed by detectives.

The woman, who asks not to be named, moved to the Algarve town of Lagos in late 2003 and worked at the Taberna de Lagos restaurant alongside waiter Christian B, who was two years younger.

The revelation could prove key in solving the case of Madeleine McCann, who went missing in Praia Da Luz in May 2007 while on a family holiday.

16TH JUN 2020, 14:17
TERRIFYING RUN-IN

A British mum has told how Madeleine McCann suspect Christian B stared at her and her daughters for two hours.

The woman said: “I’ve come across many dangerous people in ten years working with the poor — murderers and rapists — but never felt so uncomfortable as that day.”

She was volunteering at a soup kitchen in Portimao with her girls, then 12 and 17, when Christian arrived for free food.

It was during the convicted paedophile’s last spell in Portugal in 2017 — ten years after Madeleine vanished 22 miles away in Praia.

The mum, 38, told The Sun: “I recognised the police picture of him last week and can only thank God my girls stayed close and I was able to keep them safe.

“My youngest was two when Madeleine was taken and I think my instinct to protect my girls kicked in when this man appeared.

“I’ve never forgotten those eyes. I felt as if he was looking through me and could see my sins.”

16TH JUN 2020, 14:04
MCCANNS' LETTER ANGER

KATE and Gerry McCann today denied a German prosecutor's claims that they had been sent a letter telling them Madeleine is dead.

In an on-the-record interview, prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters had said: “We have written to the McCanns” to tell them “Madeleine is dead”.

But today Madeleine's parents released a stinging statement rejecting the claims they had received any letter.

Kate and Gerry said: “Since the recent police appeals regarding Madeleine’s disappearance there have been many inaccurate stories reported in the media.

“The widely reported news that we have a received a letter from the German authorities that states there is evidence or proof that Madeleine is dead is FALSE.”

16TH JUN 2020, 13:55
PROSECUTOR: NOT ALL DETAILS SHARED

THE lead prosecutor in the Madeleine McCann investigation has reportedly said he can't share key evidence with the Met Police or cops in Portugal who are also investigating the case.

Hans Christian Wolters yesterday claimed: “British police have been informed but don’t have all the evidence we have.

“The results of our investigation have been shared but not every detail has been passed to Scotland Yard.

“I don’t think the McCanns have been informed of all the details but they know the results.”

MCCANNS' LAWYER: SHARE EVIDENCE

KATE and Gerry McCann's Portuguese lawyer Rogerio Alves has called on German police to share the evidence they claim to have about her death.

But speaking yesterday, Braunschweig prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters said: “I understand what the McCann family lawyer is saying. I sympathise with the parents but if we reveal more details to them it might jeopardise the investigation.

“I know it would be of relief to the parents to know how she died but it would hamper the investigation if we give away too much information.

“This is a murder case not a missing persons case. We have been quite clear throughout that we are investigating a murder and have evidence for that.”

LETTER SEARCH

EARLIER this week, the Sun On Sunday reported how German cops investigating Christian B are desperately searching for letters he may have written that mention Madeleine McCann.

German officers have spoken to ex-girlfriends to ask them for any notes the convicted sex offender has ever sent them.

German investigators believe letters sent from behind bars and during his “hippy” life travelling around the Algarve and flitting between Portugal and Germany, could hold vital clues.

A source said: “Detectives think Christian B had many, many lovers during his time living on the Algarve.

“Some were holidaymakers and ex-pats who were always travelling in and out of the area.

“He kept in touch with many of them by letter and has also continued to send love-notes while he’s been locked up. The police believe these letters could contain really important information that will throw up new leads for them in their investigation.”

TWISTED BRAG

The Madeleine McCann suspect reportedly showed off a huge new campervan and bragged "I can transport children in this" just months before the tot vanished.

Christian B is said to have made the sickening comment to a man who lived 40 miles away from where the three-year-old disappeared in Praia da Luz in May, 2007.

The 43-year-old convicted sex offender is claimed to have then chillingly added: “Nobody can find them, nobody can catch you.”

The man – named only as Dieter F – said he was visiting his daughter Nicole in the Portuguese village of Foral in early 2007 when the German suspect turned up in a large cream-coloured Winnebago.

Christian B then reportedly showed the man around his new van – which had Hanover licence plates.

The father claimed: “He told me: 'I can transport children, kids, in this space'.”

'DON'T GIVE UP HOPE'

Madeleine McCann’s mum is being consoled by close ‘Tapas Seven’ holiday pal Fiona Payne, who is urging her not to give up hope as German police say they believe her daughter is dead.

Former GP Kate has been having tearful daily chats with fellow doctor Fiona, who has proved to be “a tower of strength and comfort” to her as she endures “unimaginable grief”.

Mum-of-two Fiona and husband David, a research fellow in cardiovascular sciences at Leicester University, were among the friends holidaying with the McCanns in the Algarve in May 2007 when Madeleine disappeared.

Pained Kate, 52, turned to Fiona when German police sensationally named sex fiend and convicted rapist Christian B as a prime suspect in their investigation.

The pair have not met up in person yet because of the coronavirus lockdown, but are said to be hoping to do so as soon as regulations are further relaxed.

NEW LINK

Vital evidence linking Madeleine McCann prime suspect Christian B to a sex attack on another British girl is gathering dust in Portuguese police stores, it is feared.

The forensic samples from a 2005 assault on a ten-year-old yards from where Madeleine disappeared two years later may hold the key to the investigation, say German police.

But evidence from that case — and others which could help nail the suspect — may be sitting unchecked.

Officers in the Algarve investigated a spate of attacks on British girls in resorts from 2004 to 2006.

But they did not inform national detectives leading the probe on Madeleine, who vanished aged three from a Praia da Luz holiday apartment in 2007.

German police say mothballed forensic samples from those attacks could contain the suspect’s DNA.

CRUNCH TALKS

Kate and Gerry’s lawyer Rogerio Alves said he will be meeting the Portuguese Policia Judiciaria this week to find out if they plan to start actively investigating the case again.

And he is sure to ask for details of the crucial evidence pointing to Madeleine's murder if the McCanns have not been told by then.

He said: “I want to find out if there are new leads for them to chase. I want to know what is being done. I intend to get answers on these matters this week.

“In terms of the investigation, and the parent’s hopes for justice, last week was a lost week.”

SUN READERS CAN HELP

Prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters has appealed to Sun readers to check old photos of Algarve holidays between 1995 and 2007 for sightings of Christian B.

He was in Portugal at that time.

Prosecutors want to speak to anyone who saw him or his distinctive VW camper van and Jaguar XJR-6.

Police across Europe are reinvestigating several cases of missing children after he emerged as a suspect in the Madeleine case.

RAP SHEET

Drifter Christian B has 17 convictions across Europe, including sex offences against children.

He was convicted last year of the 2005 rape of a 72-year-old tourist in Praia da Luz and sentenced to seven years. At the time of the conviction he was in jail for drug offences.

The tourist was blindfolded, tied up, gagged and beaten with a metal pole during an attack which he filmed.

The suspect is currently in isolation in Kiel prison. He has so far remained silent over the Madeleine accusations.

NO DAMNING DNA

Cops have confirmed they recovered no damning DNA from suspect Christian B's VW Camper Van or his Jaguar.

But he is known to have shown off videos of other victims, sparking speculation that he may have hoarded harrowing footage or pictures of three-year-old Madeleine.

COPS SLAMMED

Kate and Gerry’s lawyer Rogerio Alves blasted cops from different forces who appeared to be failing to cooperate to end the McCanns’ misery.

He said: “At the moment the police forces are arguing and this row is stupid. It seems they are trying to compete with each other.

“Madeleine’s parents don’t want to know which police force thinks it is doing the best. They do not want a war of words.

“It is no use – this is a waste of time. All the police should be doing is trying to solve the case. I want to see full cooperation between the police forces.”

FRESH APPEAL

Criminal pals of Madeleine McCann's main suspect have been urged to talk to cops about the German paedophile.

Hugo Pereira, Mayor of Lagos – where Christian B worked in a bar – gave an emotional appeal to locals who were living near him at the time.

He begged the public for information about the suspect to help cops “solve a case that has puzzled everyone in Europe and beyond”.

He told Sky News: “People with a criminal background don't deal readily with the authorities, but I appeal to such friends of the suspect to tell anything they know.

“If they don't want to speak directly to the police, they can email the information anonymously.”

'HUGE MISTAKE'

A former German police chief has admitted it was a “huge mistake” to notify Christian B in 2013 that he was a person of interest in Madeleine's disappearance.

Cops in Braunschweig sent Christian B a summons seven years ago to appear for “questioning” in relation to the Madeleine case, Der Spiegel reported.

There are fears the alleged blunder could have allowed him to destroy any evidence that may have existed, experts told the German newspaper.

Ulf Kuch, the former head of police in the German city of Braunschweig, said sending the letter “was a huge mistake”.

SILENT SUSPECT

Christian B's lawyers say he will refuse to answer questions because prosecutors must have proof he was involved in her disappearance, it has been reported.

Lawyer Friedrich Fulscher said: “Mr B is remaining silent on the allegation at this time on the advice of his defence counsel.

“This is quite common in criminal proceedings.

“It is the duty of the state to prove that a suspect committed a crime. No accused person has to prove his innocence to the investigating authorities.”

FIEND RECALL

Christian B may be taken back to Portugal for a reconstruction of the night Madeleine McCann vanished.

The suspect’s movements on the evening in 2007 will be the focus of any new re-enactment.

Portuguese sources believe it may happen soon if German police submit a request.

Local legal expert Rui Pereira said: “The suspect could be flown to Portugal for the practice of judicial enactments that require him to be present.”

He believed the sex offender is a solid suspect but convicting him would require a “miracle”

“I FEEL SO SORRY FOR THEM”

Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan today questioned the police's decision to tell the McCann's their daughter is dead.

Speaking today, he said: “It's very very tough.

“You have to wonder whether this is the right course of action, to tell Kate and Gerry.

“I do not know how they feel about it, whether it is good they know something concrete like this – or whether not knowing how she died, where she died, adds to the agony for them.

“I feel so sorry for them.”
