Environmentalists must stop talking hot air
Telegraph View

Most people want to do their bit to help the environment. The problem is that the goal posts keep shifting (wood-burning stoves and diesel cars are encouraged one minute, discouraged the next) and trust is undermined by false promises.

A lot of what we recycle, it turns out, has been shipped off to poorer countries and dumped in landfill – and, as we reveal today, consumers are being misled by a Wild West market in carbon offsetting.

One can compensate for polluting the planet by ticking a box to protect a forest, but there is no guarantee that it will actually happen. Given the money and good intentions being poured into this industry, it is a crushing disappointment.

All of this erodes the credibility of the green agenda, which is a great shame as much of it is admirable and the kind of practical conservation that many people already do as a matter of instinct.

But every time a government sets an unreasonable target that we all know cannot be met, it reduces the cause to virtue-signalling by rich countries and rich individuals.

There is a risk that environmentalism becomes a luxury product (Sir Elton John famously offset the air miles of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex when they visited him in France), while it becomes harder for citizens on modest incomes to heat their houses, take a holiday or do anything involving a car.

The more radical end of the green movement, of course, is just self-indulgent and juvenile.

This week, Extinction Rebellion protested environmental destruction by tearing up the lawn at Trinity College, Cambridge. For most of us, the whole point of conservation is to conserve that which is beautiful. Extinction Rebellion, however, wants to “save the planet” by pulling up tradition and capitalism from their very roots.

From this mix of confused aims and bad policy, the Conservatives have to create a coherent, practical agenda that wins hearts and minds through reason, not compulsion.

They have already committed themselves to ambitious targets at home and must now show us how these will actually be paid for – and how the developing world, where emissions far outstrip our own, can be persuaded to join in. As for offsetting, the solution is a properly regulated market. Building rational and transparent institutions that help us to make good choices is a hallmark of the way of life that most of us wish to preserve.

Apocryphal story doing the rounds . . .

Master at an Oxford College received a strong, vocal, and persuasive
deputation from Green Students demanding the college reduce its
Carbon footprint and emissions.
He agreed.
And turned off the heating and hot water in the students' accommodation.

AT LAST
The Thunberg family are getting publicity for the book, and again using their daughter's serious mental issues to publicise it..

Greta Thunberg's mother reveals how the climate activist 'stopped talking and eating' aged 11 as she struggled with autism and an eating disorder before discovering her mission to save the world

  • World's most recognised climate change activist Greta Thunberg fell ill aged 11
  • Her parents reveal their difficulty in coping with Greta's increasing silence
  • Miss Thunberg almost one and a half stone after two months of not eating
  • Her mother has told of how Greta's epiphany over climate shifted her mood

It is what the whole thing has been about all along.

Are there any other examples of parents using their children's mental or physical defects for publicity purposes to make money ?

Wind Turbine Blades Can’t Be Recycled, So They’re Piling Up in Landfills:
Companies are searching for ways to deal with the tens of thousands of blades that have reached the end of their lives. A wind turbine’s blades can be longer than a Boeing 747 wing, so at the end of their lifespan they can’t just be hauled away. First, you need to saw through the lissome fibreglass using a diamond-encrusted industrial saw to create three pieces small enough to be strapped to a tractor-trailer.
Tens of thousands of ageing blades are coming down from steel towers around the world and most have nowhere to go but landfills. In the U.S. alone, about 8,000 will be removed in each of the next four years. Europe, which has been dealing with the problem longer, has about 3,800 coming down annually through at least 2022, according to BloombergNEF. It’s going to get worse: Most were built more than a decade ago, when installations were less than a fifth of what they are now.
Built to withstand hurricane-force winds, the blades can’t easily be crushed, recycled or repurposed. That’s created an urgent search for alternatives in places that lack wide-open prairies. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/feb/23/more-than-11000-homes-to-be-built-on-land-at-high-risk-of-flooding

More than 11,000 new homes are planned to be built on land at the highest risk of flooding in the regions battered by the worst winter storms in a generation, the Guardian has learned.
An analysis of planning documents reveals that 11,410 new homes have been planned for land the government considers high-risk in the seven English counties where thousands of properties have been devastated by flooding since November.
In Shropshire, where a major incident was declared and residents were evacuated during Storm Dennis, 764 homes are set to be built in areas with a high flood risk. In Doncaster, where the Fishlake area was flooded in November, nearly 4,000 homes are intended for such flood zones.

Teenage 'Anti-Greta' to confront climate change activists at conference in America

Naomi Seibt argues that using fossil fuels has led to "many major benefits"

Naomi Seibt, 19, claims there is "climate alarmism"

America is about to be introduced to a climate change sceptic dubbed the "anti-Greta".

Naomi Seibt, 19, will appear at the Conservative Political Action Conference [CPAC], this week where Donald Trump is the main speaker. It is the biggest annual jamboree for grass-roots Republicanism in the United States.

Miss Seibt, who is from Germany, has been dubbed the "anti-Greta" because of her views on climate change, which are in stark contrast to those of Greta Thunberg, the Swedish teenage environmental campaigner.

She features in a video produced by the Heartland Institute, a US think tank which rejects the scientific consensus on climate change.

The video, titled "Naomi Seibt vs. Greta Thunberg: whom should we trust?” splices footage of the two European teenagers making opposing cases....

Climate Change - Page 25 Empty Re: Climate Change

The climate change people want us to use energy from different sources, wind, water, waves, tides, and ultimately either nuclear or even better Fusion, which is the Holy Grail.
It would theoretically give unlimited power for almost no cost – after the original installation was paid for.

So then everyone would have unlimited access to unlimited electricity at almost no cost.
And that would be wonderful for the world

Or would it ?

All forms of energy ultimately degrade into heat.
The 2nd and 3rd Laws of thermodynamics show this,
and explain why it takes a lot of energy to convert heat into other "higher' forms, such as mechanical, potential, chemical, or kinetic.

Therefore all the free unlimited electrical energy will end up as heat, which will have to go somewhere.
And that somewhere is the atmosphere.
There is nowhere else to put it
And whether that is in the form of steam / water vapour from cooling systems, or simply radiated to heat up other sorts of gas molecules, the result will be a heating of the atmosphere.

The question then is whether the atmosphere can radiate it into space quickly enough.

Fun isn't it.

Police warn of 'inadequate safety' at Greta Thunberg protest

26 February 2020

Climate Change - Page 25 _1106810

Police are warning parents a Bristol protest Greta Thunberg is due to join has "grown so large" it is unlikely usual safety measures will be adequate.

Avon and Somerset Police say they expect thousands of people at the Bristol Youth Strike 4 Climate on College Green on Friday to hear the 17-year-old climate activist speak.

The force said there was "potential for trips, slips, falls and crushing".

Parents and carers were advised to make their own safety arrangements.

The Swedish climate change campaigner tweeted over the weekend that she would be taking part in the city's youth protest.

But in a letter addressed to parents of school-age children, Supt Andy Bennett said the force was "unable to accurately predict how large this event will be".

"Social media has gone viral with interest which leads me to believe it will be thousands of people," he wrote.

"We have confirmation of people travelling from across the UK by car, bus, coach and train.

"I am told in Hamburg approximately 60,000 came to see Greta speak. Whilst I am not suggesting it will be this big, you can see the scale of the potential attendance."

He said the event had been advertised promising areas suitable for both primary school children and disabled people but as a "large-scale organic" event, he said that would "probably be unachievable".

"In terms of big crowds, they are dynamic in nature and there is the potential for trips, slips, falls and crushing," he warned parents.

"The event has grown so large that the usual controls, stewarding and safety measures that are routinely put in place are unlikely to be scaled up adequately."

He added Park Street and the city centre would also be closed to "try and mitigate the risks associated with a crowd too large for the College Green open space".

According to one of the protest's organisers, Greta had originally planned to visit London, but as the area planned for the protest in the capital was too small organisers had recommended Bristol instead.

Two years ago, the teenage activist started missing lessons most Fridays to protest outside the Swedish parliament building, in what turned out to be the beginning of a huge environmental movement.

She has become a leading voice for action on climate change, inspiring millions of students to join protests around the world.

Would someone please kick this ridiculous child off the stage, she's had her five minutes of fame - time to go! She's a danger to society and to herself.

The world is in nigh total shut down because something Made in China has gone viral, yet here we have little miss muffet attracting a crowd of hundreds/thousands to listen to her chanting words that she doesn't even understand. Talk about mass hysteria!

It's completely bonkers.

I didn't realise that Greta was autistic and like most sufferers, once she gets a bee in her bonnet she gets carried away and obsessed with it.

Once again, where on earth are her parents to allow her to take this as far as she has? Are they benefiting from all this publicity?

I doubt there's many folk who wouldn't cease the opportunity to make a few bob when they see an opening. I blame the cultists behind this ridiculous campaign of mass hysteria - they've given the child a platform (read soapbox) to expound on matters she knows little or nothing about. Children should not live in fear of any description - kick the child off the stage before she causes any more environmental damage.

2019’s Climate Change “Heatwave” Exposed: Similar Temperatures Recorded in 1895, 1896, 1936, 1954, 1980 . . .

SEPTEMBER 19, 2019

“Climate change” fanatics who have blamed this year’s European and North American summer heatwave on “man-made global warming” have been stumped by the news that almost identical temperatures were recorded in 1895, 1896, 1934, 1936, 1954, 1980, and at least three other times before 2019.

The New York Times, for example, ran a banner headline on Aug. 2, 2019, announcing that “Europe’s Heat Wave, Fueled by Climate Change, Moves to Greenland.”
In that article, it was stated matter-of-factly that “climate change had made the heat wave at least 10 times more likely.”
Quoting “climate change” fanatics World Weather Attribution (a group which, the NYT told its readers, “conducts rapid analyses of weather events to see if they are influenced by climate change”), the report said that “in Germany, the heat wave was at least eight times more likely because of climate change . . . and in Britain, where the heat did not linger as long, it was at least two times more likely.”
This sort of nonsense—sprouted without any form of justification—was repeated ad infinitum by the controlled media, leading to lunatics such as Britain’s “extinction rebellion” group and others taking to the streets to demonstrate against “climate change.”
The endless propaganda has spread all around the world, with thousands of Australian school students planning a second walk out of their classrooms on September 20, 2019, as part of a “Global Climate Strike,” three days before the UN Emergency Climate Summit.
On March 15 this year, a crowd estimated at 150,000 students marched in protest around Australia, with 1.6 million students on strike worldwide.
However, the reality is that hot summers have come and gone throughout history. Well-known weather forecast company Accuweather—which has become a worldwide mainstay of weather forecasting on the internet—let the cat out of the bag this week when it admitted that
“Many of the records late this week and this weekend were set during a vicious late-season heat wave that lasted many days 124 years ago in 1895.”
That year was not the only time record heat temperatures were recorded.
A blog post on the Ancestry.com website listed at least nine other heatwaves which have struck America since 1896:

1. Heat Wave of 1896
Nearly 1,500 people died during a 10-day heat wave as temperatures reached 90 degrees with 90 percent humidity on the US East Coast.

2. Heat Wave of 1934
The United States’ hottest year on record saw 29 straight days of temperatures hitting triple digits. To top it off, during the summer of 1934, an extreme drought affected over 70 percent of Western North America.

3. Heat Wave of 1936
1936 was one of the worst years for the American people. Battered by the Great Depression, drought, and dust storms, the area of the Dust Bowl was hit especially hard by the heat wave. Temperatures hit record highs, going well over the 120-degree mark in some regions. By the end of the summer, more than 5,000 Americans had died from heat-related causes.

4. Heat Wave of 1954
From Colorado to the Carolinas, a significant portion of 11 states cooked under the 1954 heat wave. For 22 days, temperatures reached over 100 degrees. The heat damaged crops, caused power and water shortages, and generally wreaked havoc over the entire region. Three lakes dried up in the St. Louis area, and water was rationed. An estimated 300 deaths were recorded.

5. Heat Wave of 1980
A mix of drought and heat made 1980 a terrible summer for the U.S. Though not as bad as earlier heat waves, this one stood out because of the damage. The economic losses were estimated at $16 billion, while the death toll was at least 1,700.

6. Heat Wave of 1988
Another heat wave coupled with a massive drought occurred in 1988. With the loss of anywhere between 5,000 and 10,000 lives, the catastrophe was devastating. The agricultural damage was estimated at $71.2 billion. Wildfires hit national parks like Yellowstone and Mount Rushmore, and rainfall from April through June registered even lower than the Dust Bowl years.

7. 1995 Chicago Heat Wave
Chicago lived through five sweltering days that resulted in approximately 700 heat-related deaths. The temperature reached 106 degrees, and record humidity levels made things worse.

8. Heat Wave of 2006
Spread throughout most of the U.S., the heat wave of 2006 saw heat-related deaths from New York to California. Temperatures climbed to over 100 degrees, and California saw the most lives lost with 126.

9. Heat Wave of 2012
Failed crops across the Midwest cost $30.3 billion. The shortage drove up food prices, affecting the rest of the country. Combined with 123 fatalities, the loss was devastating.

It is clear to any objective observer that extreme temperatures fluctuate by the decade, and that very cold or very hot weather by itself is no indication of long-term change in weather patterns.
This simple fact will, however, be ignored by the climate change fanatics, who function on a diet of ignorance and misinformation, fuelled by endless fake news from the controlled media.

This might look like Elsa's doing in Frozen, but it's actually the effect of a blizzard in a US town.

Hamburg, which sits on the edge of Lake Erie in New York state, found itself covered in a thick layer of ice after a storm.

Strong winds bought huge waves and spray from Lake Erie in New York state onto the shore and, because the temperature was below zero, the water froze onto the houses forming dramatic icicles.

Proof you CAN turn back the tide: The Somerset Levels were devastated by floods in 2014, so how have they survived this year's deluges? The answer is simple: by ignoring modern eco-zealots and using some ideas of old
