SHEREE DODD BOWS OUT

posted by TTW4 http://thentherewere4-mccannunravelled.blogspot.com/2010/03/sheree-dodd-here-seen-on-left-of-this.html

Sheree Dodd bows out The+original+Team+McCann
Sheree Dodd here seen on the left of this picture was the former Daily Mirror journalist appointed as Tony Blair's 'Special Foreign Office Ambassador' to the McCanns within hours of Madeleines disappearence. This was a totally unprecedented move for any UK politican to take, it had never been done before. The Government intervened and took over news-handling on behalf of the McCanns and Sheree Dodd as a long-serving senior spokeswoman for the government was duely dispatched to Portugal.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office announced that she was being deployed as “press officer responsible to act as media liaison officer for the McCann family” She flew out to be at the McCanns side for press conferences and to attend police interviews. Her instructions were to offer every possible consular assistance to the McCanns, but of the assistance she was aked to give, on behalf of HMG, there was more quite alot more, all of which the public was not to be made aware.

A newspaper report surfaced in early December 2007. The report concerned an official report, a classified document that had been sent sometime earlier from the Algarve to the Foreign Office in London. This report had been leaked to 'La Dernier Heure', a Belgian newspaper. In the newspaper report of the classified document the following statements were made:

1.The diplomat warned HMG of the “inconsistencies” in the testimonies by her parents and their friends about the night the four-year-old vanished - people were not were they claimed to be.

2.After visiting the McCanns, the unnamed diplomat voiced his concerns about the “confused declarations” as to the whereabouts of Kate and Gerry McCann and their friends in the final hours before Madeleine’s disappearance.

3.The document mentioned the couple’s “lack of co-operation” with the investigating Portuguese police.

4.The letter confirmed that London had earlier suggested to consular staff that they “overstretch their authority and put pressure on the Portuguese authorities”.

5.The Foreign Office in London the day before had also commanded that embassy staff give “all possible assistance to the McCann couple”.

6.Diplomats were told the McCanns had to be “accompanied at all times during any contact with the Portuguese police” by a member of consular staff or by British police officers sent out from the UK.

7.The author of the letter then warned London of the risks of siding with the McCanns as completely as had been demanded, it said :
“With the greatest respect, I would like to make you aware of the risks and implications to our relationship with the Portuguese authorities, if you consider the possible involvement of the couple. Please confirm to me, in the light of these concerns, that we want to continue to be closely involved in the case as was requested in your previous message.”

Sheree Dodd bows out 17th+may+2007+Dodds+Wright
Dodd's penultimate appearence for HMG - the 17th of May 2007.

The diplomat's concerns were made over four months before Gerry and Kate McCann were named arguidos (suspects) on September 7th 2007. This date suggests the report was written on the 5th or the 6th of May 2007 at the very latest. On the 5th of May the Leicestershire Family Liason Officers arrived and on the 6th of May 2007 Clarence Mitchell ex of the Governments Media Monitoring Unit arrived in Luz. 14 days later Dodd was to be found on a plane on her way back to the UK.

The timing of the report and it's contents indicates that the qualities Dodd had to offer, in her professional role, would be of little or no value to the McCanns and their agenda or the aims of HMG. Clarence Mitchell her successor was, on the other hand, clearly identified as the man selected by the Foreign Office and HMG as being a man endowed with exactly the required professional qualifications to satisy HMG's objectives with regards the McCanns.

In September 2007 a Foreign Office source said: “This has been a completely new situation. We had to do something.” The leaked Dodd report detailed that the Foreign Office certainly did something alright, and that something was such that they can now rest on their laurels totally secure in the knowledge that no one has ever been or is likely ever to be charged or brought to trial anywhere either in Portugal or the UK for the accidental killing of Madeleine McCann.

Only now is it possible to summise in this way a small part of the behind the scenes string pulling that was effected on behalf of the McCanns. The leaked report gives such a small insight, but it is enough to see why all official enquires for the truth about the Foreign Office's role invariably meets with official denial and official obstruction.

In 2008 a Freedom Of Information request was made to force the disclosure of the contents of all communication between the British Embassy in Portugal and the Foreign Office in London, this was in part denied. The information that was denied was denied on the grounds that the release of such information would in some way endanger or irrepairably damage international relations between the UK and Portugal. It should be noted that there was not any mention that any such disclosure would justify or explain the actions of the Foreign Office. It is therefore fair to asume the information clearly had only political repercussions and ones that could only cause harm to the Government of the day. The only other possibility might be that we are now at war with Portugal, and sometimes I really do wonder if now this is the case.

There is however one last possibility to consider and that is what we have all witnessed in the McCann case is nothing more than the manner in which the Foreign Office and the British Government under Gordon Brown offers assistance to all British persons, whether they are involved or implicated or not in the accidental manslaughter of their child, whilst abroad.

Hiya T4

Did you know that as early as 8 May the British Police already had Kate's seized camera and I assume the Sony video recorder they also seized belongs to David Payne. That was sent off for separate analysis.../!

There were two memory cards for Kate's camera seized along with the camera that were subject to minute analysis. 43 pictures were found to be on the cards and 73 that had been deleted were recovered and subject to a report.

Did it ever occur to you that British authorities knew all along what this case was about and they were gunning for Team McCann?

This was no "accidental death", Goncalo is clear that was a hypothesis at the time, and he is also clear there is much he knows that he is not going to reveal. But maybe the McCanns fear that if they press on with their actions against him....

FCO sending two personnel (one after another in a short spell of time) to help the mccannns was indeed unprecedented by all standards.

Refusing to asnwer FOIA questions with that lame excuse was no doubt to cover their backside, as there is no justification for them to have done what they did, especially considering they'd been forewarned by a Diplomat.

Since FCO's lame excuse of 'two countries relationship in jeopardy' cannot apply if individual UK nationals made that request, is it possible for Uk invidiuals to pose FOIA questions of FCO?

A timely reminder that the scepticism regarding the McCanns and their friends did not start with the incompetent Portuguese police.

Neither is it confined to a few nutters on forums.

I don't think it's scepticism that upsets anyone Gran. It's out and out nastiness and incitement to hatred that tends to cause issues, and that certainly is confined to a few nutters on (and probably off) of forums.

The parents should have been fully investigated from the off. I've never seen anyone argue any different.

Diplomatic interference may well have existed, but not at the request of the parents.

Of whom then vaguely?

I thought they were phoning their friends asking them to contact anybody who could help. Who said something about calling in some old favours or something like that?

I'd phone friends and ask them to help....and pull in favours if I wanted to find my child.

As for diplomats and politicians, and PR men, and well off businessmen who all jump on the bandwagon.......who knows. Everything for a reason I guess.

I have no idea - but I don't think the McCanns are omnipotent.

Dont know about you vaguely - maybe you consider it perfectly normal to ring friends from the word GO and you're entitled to keep that opinion.

But in their place, first thing I would MOST DEFINITELY do is physically search as well as implore people around me to help in the physical search. And, after the search within that limited means/ways in those limited say 48 hours is exhausted, then only I might summon help from friends overseas to pull strings to help find the child. Certainly calling long distance to family and friends overseas would NOT be my PRIORITY of priorities because what can those far-away people do to help in the physical search in the most crucial hours.

In the reverse order, it would seem the help summoned was for the parents rather than about Maddie.

So you would consider calling friends (especially overseas ones) priority above all else not super abnormal yeah? hmmm.......well,.......?
Nobody is saying they shouldnt ask for help, it's the manner (rather timing) it was done that renders their behaviour omnidevious. Well vaguely! imo anyway, OK I hope?

Well whoever instigated the support the McCanns were undoubtedly given is not the real issue here. According to the OP, Sheree Dodd was appointed by Tony Blair to fly out and assist the Mccanns within hours of Madeleine's disappearance.
Ms Dodd expressed concerns about the inconsistencies in the statements of the Mccanns and their friends, and was subsequently removed from her post.
Now, why was she sent by Tony Blair within hours of Madeleine going missing? Surely that is an extraordinary level of service to be accorded to an ordinary couple. Whenever a representative from the FO is interviewed on TV or whatever, I get the impression that their responsibilities to UK citizens abroad is limited to offering advice re lawyers, reissuing of lost passports etc., and those are the ones on the spot, not staff sent post haste. I do find that interesting.

I think they are limited in respect to certain areas, i.e. passports, lawyers etc.....but in relation to a missing child then I would guess (hope) that they would be less limited.

It's difficult to judge whether the McCanns were given special treatment because we have nothing comparable to check against, thankfully, in recent times.

Except that 48 hours is a crucial period of time. I have to say that I'd probably be guilty of contacting every possible person I could - although I don't know that. I don't have a clue how I would react - I just know that I would probably find it difficult to know what the hell was going on because I only speak English and I'd probably find some comfort in being surrounded by people who could offer some form of support - even if it was only psychological.

After the ridiculous intervention of the government in the Jade Goody fiasco I don't put anything past them any more. Who'd have ever foreseen that type of intervention prior to it happening.

As you say vaguely, thankfully there are no cases of children going missing in recent times, but there are other disasters, equally traumatic imo where nothing like this level of assistance was given.
I recall that dreadful tsunami where British families were caught up in it. Children were separated from parents. Families were left destitute and searching the area for each other. The FO were heavily criticised for doing practically nothing to help. It was during those TV interviews with the local staff that I discovered their limitations. No extra staff were sent from the UK to help out.
Scarlett Keeling was 15years old when she was murdered. Not a child admittedly, but her mother received no help from the FO.
There was also the case of the British mother who abandoned her baby at the airport at Faro and returned to the UK alone. It was the owner of the campsite at Albufeira who took the baby in and looked after it until the Portuguese authorities placed the baby in a Portuguese childrens home. Not a peep from the FO staff, not even the Consular staff at Portimao, and the baby was a UK citizen after all.

The McCanns were not a vulnerable couple alone in a strange country. They are a professional couple who had their friends with them, and although Portugal is a foreign country, English is the common language, particularly in a tourist area like the Algarve. Yes, they would have needed interpreters and lawyers for things like making statements for the official records, but for the purposes of general conversation and explaining what had happened to the police, staff and residents of PDL, language would not have been a barrier.

So then someone high up in the foreign office is 'in on it'? whatever 'it' is, as well as parts of the British Government, the tapas 9. Leicester police, the foreign office, authors, celebrities and friends and family as well as various others.

I just don't buy that.

I love a good conspiracy theory me, but there has to be a point at where the conspiracy would need to be so big that even my dog would be in on it.

I can buy that they know people who know people - and that they may have asserted their rights but beyond that it becomes slightly unmanageable.

vaguely, I am not suggesting a conspiracy. All I am saying is that it does look as though the McCanns, uniquely, were provided with an exceptional level of FO support. The mystery is what reason was there for that?

The opening paragraph of the OP.

That meant that Alex Woolfall, the company's crisis management head, was in Praia da Luz the day after Madeleine disappeared. When Woolfall left 10 days later, the Foreign Office stepped in. Media handlers arrived from London. They included former Daily Mirror journalist Sheree Dodd and, later, former BBC man Clarence Mitchell. Both Woolfall and Mitchell are remembered by reporters as key and immensely helpful sources as the McCann phenomenon took off.

I forget the dates so unsure whether these are correct, but maybe the FO intervention is related to Woolfall and Mitchell's connections rather than those of the McCann's.

It was Woolfall who acted as a bridge between the distraught McCanns and the arriving media hordes. Two weeks later, Woolfall stood down and the Foreign Office stepped in.

Viv is off the mark here - I believe. The memory cards and Sony Handicam were taken from the Foster family and were not the property of Kate McCann nor David Payne. I don't know where Viv got hat from.....
