No Tony!

Because it was reported by the media without corroborating evidence. There is a very big difference.

You actually completely contradict what you’ve said by quoting a media report! You wrote: “For a start, we have been assured that Madeleine was never referred to as Maddie/Maddy”. No, we haven’t. That statement came in one early media report. We have contradictory evidence that the McCanns called her Maddie. There was a comment on Facebook by Gerry McCann back in 2005 in which he appealed for volunteers to babysit for ‘Maddie’. He later wiped it. At no time since have the McCanns ever insisted that they always called her by her full name.

So, it seemed, had our daughter. Madeleine would be the first person to correct anyone who makes the mistake of shortening her name. ‘I’m not Maddie, I’m Madeleine!’ And quite right, too. It’s often done inadvertently, or in a good-natured attempt to sound more familiar and friendly, but the press know what her name is and yet to this day they insist on calling her Maddie or Maddy. I find it quite disrespectful. Unfortunately it’s what happens when your name is too long to suit their headlines – and there have been plenty of those.

Tony Bennett wrote:Surely instead of blandly  insisting: “Anyone who takes the slightest notice of media reports needs to re-think”, wouldn’t it be better to simply advise that people should exercise discretion and judgment when reading media reports.

I frequently say media reports should be viewed with extreme caution.  'Anyone who takes the slightest notice of media reports needs to re-think' amounts to much the same thing.

ETA: I believe the reference to Madeleine never being called Maddie/Maddy by the McCanns was recorded on video in their own words. Unfortunately I can't recall what when or why. If I come across it I will upload on the forum.

Tony Bennett wrote:I cannot agree that, as Verdi suggested, the words: ‘Maddie’s jammies! Where is Maddie?’ ‘must have been used for a reason’.

I suggest no such thing. I simply don't believe the sibling said those words.

What I said was that team McCann never say anthing without reason. There is a big difference.

This was GM’s post on ‘Friends Reunited’ showing that they at least did call her Maddie:

(We) "never called her anything like that"…………….. 'Maddie' was a name "invented" by the media

This was the original mccannfiles link that no longer works. Need to find it again on the Pamalam site, but haven’t got time at the moment.

Thank you PeterMac. Charlotte Pennington’s police statement of 7th May makes it pretty clear.

Thanks for posting that up Doug D, I've been looking everywhere for it - it had to be somewhere thumbsup .  I knew it was an old blog but couldn't remember what it was called.

It's noticeable how the McCanns always refer to her as Madeleine.  I can't see any reason why they're so insistent she was never called Maddy/Maddie.

It's not important is it?

Maybe it was just to emphasize how charismatic their little daughter was.

Whatever, I don't believe Amelie McCann made that comment about Maddy's jammies - or whatever it was reported by the press.

ETA:  I think we've gone a bit astray.  Madeleine McCann's pyjamas has nothing to do with the tennis ball photograph i don\'t know

offtopic

If members wish to continue discussing the subject of Madeleine v. Maddie, just say the word and I will find a more appropriate destination to stick it!
