MADELEINE McCann’s parents have been hit with £29,500 in legal fees for the Portuguese cop who accused them of killing their child.

Kate and Gerry lost a libel case against ex- detective Goncalo Amaral.

Kate and Gerry McCann have been ordered to pay Goncalo Amaral £29k after losing a libel case

The Sun on Sunday has seen court files showing they have had to pay him £24,000 — and now they are about to be told to cough up another £5,500.

Madeleine vanished aged three from her bed during a family holiday in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in 2007.

In a 2008 book, Amaral claimed Kate and Gerry accidentally killed her and covered it up by pretending she had been abducted.

He overturned their initial damages victory over his book The Truth Of The Lie and the decision in his favour was also upheld by another court.

The extra £5,500 is to cover further costs being run up by his lawyers defending their final appeal to the European Court of Human Rights.

And the couple, both 51, of Rothley, Leics, face having to fork out even more if they lose again.

Our reporter was given permission by staff to view the huge legal dossier kept in an office at Lisbon Civil Court.

The court papers also show Amaral, 59, who has caused the parents fresh distress in a controversial new Netflix documentary, had huge debts when he wrote his book.

Over to you Paulo Reis 2thumbs !

A few thousand quid won't knock a hole in the £750.000 the limited company has got stashed away for a rainy day.

Meanwhile Gonçalo Amaral's life and career was completely ruined by the vindictive spite of the McCann duo. Who said all's fair in love and war?

Watch my lips .... the Mcanns have not, will not, cannot take their hate campaign to the European Court of Human Rights - it is not possible.

Bah!

Got to be nonsense, but it looks like it got Gerard Couzens a spring 'freebie' in Lisbon anyway.

'The extra £5,500 is to cover further costs being run up by his lawyers defending their final appeal to the European Court of Human Rights.'

Why would GA's lawyers run up further costs in a case that has nothing to do with him, but is against the Portuguese state?

And anyway, what happened to this bit of scintillating news from ‘The Soaraway Sun’ last year.

Gerard Couzens has been a McCann adherent since time immemorial.

Much like Kandohla, you can take anything he says as regards the McCanns with a Siberian mine of salt.

yes

A lot more detail in the Mirror version, but the ‘total costs of the cases’ figures can’t possibly be anything like correct.

I know it’s Portuguese rather than UK courts, but even so!

Madeleine McCann's parents hit with £29k legal fees after court battles

The couple took legal action against disgraced cop Goncalo Amaral nearly a decade ago

BY
GERARD COUZENS

Madeleine McCann's parents face hefty legal fees nearly a decade after the start of a bitter court battle against the ex-police chief who has attacked them again in a new documentary.
Kate and Gerry McCann are about to be told by a Lisbon court they still owe thousands of pounds from their libel fight against Goncalo Amaral.
And the disgraced cop, who has repeated the accusation that the couple put their daughter’s life at risk in a new Netflixseries about Madeleine’s 2007 disappearance, is set to increase their heartbreak by hitting them with a fresh four-figure demand for cash.
Amaral, 59, is waiting on a soon-to-come judgement from the European Court of Human Rights over the lengthy legal battle with the McCanns sparked by his hurtful 2008 book The Truth of The Lie before deciding whether to launch a compensation claim.

But legal papers at a Lisbon court show Madeleine’s parents are already nearly £24,000 out of pocket after accusing Amaral of defaming them by cruelly claiming in the book she died in an accident at their Algarve apartment and they covered it up.
Another bill totalling £5,346 to cover left-over court costs - half what they were being asked for before a successful appeal a judge has just ruled on - is about to be sent to their lawyer Isabel Duarte.
And that is likely to pave the way for a fresh claim by Amaral to get Madeleine’s parents to compensate him for another £5,148 in remaining fees he will be asked for that were incurred in persuading his country’s top court to back him over the book fight.

Thirteen volumes of court files charting the ongoing battle the McCanns started after Amaral published in July 2008 - just three days after they were told they were no longer suspects - detail the cash settlements they have been forced into after their initial 2015 libel win was overturned by two higher Portuguese courts.
The 2,958 pages show Madeleine’s parents had to pay £5,548 in costs to Truth of the Lie publishers Guerra e Paz despite its lawyer admitting to a miscalculation of nearly £1,800 in her initial estimate.
The files also show an error by Amaral’s lawyer Miguel Cruz Rodriguez almost led to the McCanns paying Amaral around £1,800 more in costs than they had to.
The McCanns’ lawyer Isabel Duarte paid the extra before complaining in writing to a judge to get the cash refunded.

The couple’s total bill so far from their Amaral libel fight comes to just under £24,500.
That includes their own legal fees and court costs but also four-figure payouts to the former detective and Truth of the Lie publishers Guerra e Paz.
The figure - which does not include costs they have incurred taking the case to Europe - will rise to nearly £35,000 once the McCanns are sent their new bill and Amaral demands they compensate him for his final payment linked to the Portuguese court fight.
In appendix to the files - kept on a shelf in a seventh-floor office at the same Lisbon Civil Court which ordered Amaral to pay the McCanns £430,000 in 2015 before its first-round libel decision was overturned on appeal - also lays bare the ex-cop’s dire financial position when he penned his controversial book.

Isabel Duarte applied to have his assets seized in June 2009 after lodging a claim for £1 million in damages on behalf of the McCanns and their children.
But a financial probe revealed in the court papers show that the £60,000 2700cc Jaguar car he drove was owned by a firm he set up four months after his book about Madeleine’s death was published.
It also showed an Algarve home - registered in his then-wife Sofia’s name - had loans totalling nearly £400,000 after the bank moved to repossess it following missed mortgage payments and Portuguese tax chiefs tried to recover a five-figure debt.
Amaral, now living in Lisbon, went on the attack again in a Netflix documentary series released earlier this month by claiming the McCanns put their toddler’s life at risk by publicising her distinctive eye marking.
A spokesman for the couple said the claims were “unfounded”.
A source close to the McCanns was quoted as saying: “Mr Amaral doesn’t seem to have any compassion for Kate and Gerry and is only interested in publicising himself.”

Only £30k for this lot?

Not sure how many actual court days were involved for some of the events, but even if only one day was needed for the 'unknowns', what with preparation days (weeks?) the lawyer costs must surely be vastly more.

The costs of the original ‘book ban’ cases are probably excluded, but if I recall correctly the Mc’s managed to have these rolled over till the end of the ‘libel’ trial, so they may still have these outstanding as well pending the ECHR outcome. The note under 24/10/10 says that the vast majority of court expenses had to be paid in advance,  but not the lawyers costs.

Couzens does muddy the water a bit with:

‘Another bill totalling £5,346 to cover left-over court costs’

‘The couple’s total bill so far from their Amaral libel fight comes to just under £24,500.
That includes their own legal fees and court costs but also four-figure payouts to the former detective and Truth of the Lie publishers Guerra e Paz.’

But if it is really so cheap to go to court in Portugal, why did GA need £50k for his final appeal?

As with all things Mc, it doesn’t make sense.
9/9/09Restraining injunction - book ban

13/1 – 24/2/104 days at least – Temporary Injunction

24/10/10Book ban overturned
Please note that the ruling determines that costs are to be paid by the appealed parties, which is to say, the McCann couple and their children. These costs relate exclusively to the injunction and the appeal, and they do not cover lawyer expenses, or any other court costs that have already been paid beforehand. A recent legal reform in Portugal has determined that the vast majority of court expenses have to be paid in advance - as was the case at hand.

10/11/10Mc’s appeal to Supreme Court against lifting of ban

18/3/11Annulment of previous overturn verdict request rejected

12/9/13 - 21/1/1514 Days -Libel trial McCann v Goncalo Amaral

27/4/1552 page McCann family vs Amaral et al Judgment Verdict

7/10/15Libel trial McCann v Goncalo Amaral - Confirmation of Appeal

19/4/16Judgement of Lisbon Court of Appeal on request 1454/09

31/1/1775 page verdict
31/1/17Ruling. Freedom of expression and honor constitute two fundamental rights

16/2/17McCanns Supreme Court annulment request

Have they paid that bill? Empty Re: Have they paid that bill?

For these reasons, I think this may be correct.

In the past few weeks we have had the Netflix documentary in which the McCanns claim (via the media) that Amaral libelled them by saying that they put Madeleine in danger by advertising her coloboma.

The media has been ramming into us  that the McCanns had nothing to do with this film.

Was the documentary a deliberate attempt to trap Goncalo Amaral? were they looking for an excuse to withhold  payment, with a claim that he had libelled them?

Why the documentary now?
Why the media hype about the McCanns having nothing to do with it?
Why the media hype about Amaral libelling them again?
Why the recent media lies about the so called abduction?

This is becoming very transparent,  IMO a set up to get out of paying up.

Like I said before , they've played a blinder !

A carefully orchestrated campaign, Netflix - no we want nothing to do with it

We won't be commenting or giving interviews about it

Didn't have to , tame MSM and the " source close to the family " did it all for them

MSM continue to print ever more ludicrous stories daily , always stressing  innocent parents , abduction and the now back to being " disgraced ex cop " !

Now it's about how much money they're going to pay out , still saying they're taking Amaral to the ECHR , and he's going for compensation .

It's always been about money , and their hatred of Amaral , the man who if left to do his job would have discovered the truth and given Madeleine justice .

Poor Madeleine , that can't be allowed to happen can it .
