Kate McCann's pre-arguido witness statement - 6th September 2007BlueBag wrote:I can't see why the emphasis on where the children or parents slept at any one time.
I think Kate said sleeping in a separate bed was a first time.
"First time" anything in an investigation is a red flag.
My opinion is that she may have been keeping an eye on Madeleine for some reason.
When asked if she ever slept in Madeleine's room, she says that this happened on the Wednesday, because she was annoyed with Gerry. He ignored her after dinner when they went to the Tapas bar, which only happened that day. She decided to retaliate by sleeping in the other room, in the bed next to the window. She doesn't know if Gerry realized this because he was sleeping when she left, and if in fact her husband was aware of this, he made no comment.
There was of course the customary embellished media blitz on the subject and I also recall Kate McCann saying that she and Gerry never argue, the sulk being a first time - or something to that effect. Having said that, I don't believe a single word that emanates from camp McCann.
My point is, as far as is known, the only occupants of apartment 5a during the week were the McCann family - there is no one to verify their movments within the apartment at any time. Kate McCann must have mentioned this for a reason, she needn't have so why did she - why draw attention to a situation that can't be verified by an independent witness.
The McCanns, nor their elected representatives, ever say anything without reason.

Whats important to remember is that we know very little about the investigation and certainly nothing of the informal interviews.
Just because there is no record of informal interviews does not mean the interviews and the details in them do not exist.
We know there were comments made by the cleaner that were not included in her statement...Mr Amaral refers to her claim of cleaning the windows on Wednesday.....
This was another one...

That was taken on Friday. The few minutes claim was Wednesday night.
This photo was taken early Friday morning, but represents how the bed was 'apparently' how it looked from the night before (Wednesday) when Kate claims to have spent a few minutes in the bed

DISCREPANCY [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] - McCanns deny shutters were open.
An indication that the PJ had information from the cleaner during an informal interview that the shutters were open when the cleaner entered the apartment. This information was not in the cleaner's statement.
Gerry and Kate McCann both claimed the shutters were not opened.
The McCanns were likely unaware of this detail when they told family/friends that the shutters were jemmied.
Considered important enough by the PJ as a discrepancy worth checking by UK investigation.

The shorts Madeleine was wearing in the tennis pic, was described by Kate as broderie anglais. They look nothing of the sort. They are plain, jerseycotton shorts.

Tuesday 1st May 2007
During Gerry’s tennis lesson, Madeleine and Ella came to the adjoining court with their Mini Club for a mini-tennis session. Jane and I stayed to watch them. It chokes me remembering how my heart soared with pride in Madeleine that morning. She was so happy and obviously enjoying herself.
Standing there listening intently to Cat’s instructions, she looked so gorgeous in her little T-shirt and shorts, pink hat, ankle socks and new holiday sandals that I ran back to our apartment for my camera to record the occasion. One of my photographs is known around the world now: a smiling Madeleine clutching armfuls of tennis balls.
At the end of their session, the children had been asked to run around the court and pick up as many balls as they could. Madeleine had done really well and was very pleased with herself. Gerry loves that picture.
Thursday 3rd May 2007
Some images are etched for all time on my brain.
Madeleine that lunchtime is one of them. She was wearing an outfit I’d bought especially for her holiday: a peach-coloured smock top from Gap and some white broderie-anglaise shorts from Monsoon – a small extravagance, perhaps, but I’d pictured how lovely she would look in them and I’d been right.
She was striding ahead of Fiona and me, swinging her bare arms to and fro. The weather was a little on the cool side and I remember thinking I should have brought a cardigan for her, although she seemed oblivious of the temperature, just happy and carefree. I was following her with my eyes, admiring her. I wonder now, the nausea rising in my throat, if someone else was doing the same.

I see this forum has changed quite a bit since my last visit.
Kate's need to be seen as a mother who bought only the best clothes for her daughter, and her need to point out where they were bought (while it is obvious that Madeleine wore normal to shabby clothes) has always striked me as being odd.
But, if these kind of talk are no longer allowed, I will be quiet.

(a) Why was Kate not interviewed on May 11th?

(a) Why was Kate not interviewed on May 11th?
Thursday May 10th 2007
This is the day that (according to phone pings) Gerry and Kate (and David Payne?) went to Portimao for statements at around 2pm.
Gerry was not finished until 3.30am so Kate left and was back in PdL by 10.30pm
On a video interview, Kates mum claimed that she was going to be interviewed in PdL the following day May 11th (as was Dianne Webster)
McCLIP: Was KATE interviewed by POLICE on May 11th 2007?
In Peter Neil Patterson statement (gave the bible to Kate) he claims that he was with Kate at 9.30am on 11th and Kate had to rush off for the interview.
"On Friday the 11th of May 2007 we heard rumours that the Portuguese were going to stop the searches. After having passed this information to Kate we met up in the Tapas bar in the resort between 9:30 and 9:45 in the morning. We met for only a half hour to 40 minutes as Kate had to attend a police interview". [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Apparently that interview did not happen.
Mr Amaral made a comment in his book which, if memory serves me, confirms she was not interviewed)

(b) Kate asked Peter Neil Patterson to pray at the marina
What I find is curious and MAY BE OF IMPORTANCE to note...is that he also mentioned that Kate had asked him to pray at the Marina in Lagos...which he did...
"Kate asked me to pray at the Marina, which I did, a number of times during the week."
(Keeping in mind she would not have known this info would have been told to police and made public in files)
(PLEASE NOTE: This is from a post in 2014 and I have not researched and updated the phone information)
CURIOUSLY on May 10th, Kate's phone pings show she visited Lagos (Marina?) early in the morning.
'10/5 Pinging in Lagos from 07:39 - 07:55 , gap until next ping at 08:50 in Luz '
WHY DID THE MARINA APPEAR TO BE OF SIGNIFICANCE TO KATE?

I have just discovered that Kate visited on 9th and 14th..Nothing to suggest Gerry was with her

[size=40]Maddy's mother photographed boat she believes snatched girl[/size]
KATE McCANN went to see a boat she believes was used in the abduction of their daughter, the Sunday Express can reveal today. Just a few days after Madeleine was snatched from the family’s holiday apartment, a family friend had a “strong vision” that the child was on a boat moored in a nearby marina.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]Kate McCann took her friend's vision seriously after Madeleine vanished []
Kate went to Lagos marina, a few miles along the coast from Praia da Luz where her daughter vanished on May 3, 2007, and photographed the boat and the man on board, a hand-written note in police files reveals.
The note, headed “information from the family” and apparently from an officer with the Leicestershire Police as it was written on the force’s notepaper, reads: “I spoke to Kate McCann on Tuesday 8th May 2007.
“She told me that a friend of her aunt and uncle had a friend that had a strong vision that Madeleine was on a boat with a man in the marina in Lagos.”
It reveals that the “person” arrived in Portugal and spoke to Kate, adding: “They have visited the marina and identified the boat.”
The officer spoke to a colleague who made some enquiries about the cruiser, which was registered to a Canadian national. Enquiries were also made on the police national computer.
The note goes on: “I spoke with Kate today and she has given me photographs of the boat.
“She has also given me photograph of a man who had been on the boat.
“This is not the man that the woman saw in her vision. This matter is very important to her and she is very pleased that we are making enqs (enquiries) into the matter.”
In the Portugese police file there are pictures of the marina and the cruiser along with a letter from the marina to the registered owner saying that the six months’ mooring contract would run out on April 8 of that year.
Whether the astonishing enquiries made by Kate herself led anywhere is not clear but the episode shows how seriously she took the suggestion that her daughter was abducted by sea.
In the early days of Madeleine’s disappearance Portugese detectives investigated the ownership and movements of many boats on the local coast, but don’t appear to have come up with strong suspect.
However, with the feverish speculation that a woman with an Australian accent was apparently waiting for the delivery of a child in Barcelona 72 hours after Madeleine vanished has turned the spotlight back on the movement of boats in May 2007.
Private detectives working for Kate and Gerry McCann are working on the theory that Madeleine was smuggled on to a boat, then spirited 800 miles along the coast to Barcelona for collection by the woman, who is said to bear a resemblance to Victoria Beckham.
A British man had a conversation with the woman outside a restaurant 72 hours after Maddie, then three, was taken. Tragically for Madeleine, these sporadic bouts of excitement have in the past failed to produce a direct lead to who actually took her and where she is now, dead or alive.
Unfortunately, the whole investigation was also compromised in the early days by the sheer incompetence of the Portugese police investigation.
From the outset officers allowed people to trample over the crime scene at the McCann’s apartment.
And though Jane Tanner, one of the McCann’s holiday companions, dubbed the Tapas Seven, said she saw a man carrying a child in his arms around the time Madeleine disappeared, it was left to the McCanns to get an artist to do a drawing months later instead of a professional, Scotland Yard e-fit.
Another key area woefully handled by the Portugese was the vital accounting for all the known paedophiles in the area at the crucial time.
Retired detectives David Edgar and Arthur Cowley are doing the extremely difficult job of trying to track the alibis of these people more than two years after the kidnap.
The last time there was such concentrated interest was when a newspaper discovered that British paedophile Raymond Hewlett had been in Portugal at the relevant time. Now dying from cancer, he has consistently denied any involvement.
Now the Madeleine hare is up and running in Australia.
Television programmes have been urging millions of residents to track down the woman who allegedly had a snatched conversation with a British man who waited more than two years to contact the Madeleine investigators, apparently unaware that he may possess vital information.
Right from the beginning allegations have been bandied about to the detriment of the inquiry.
The innocent and well meaning Robert Murat suffered months of suspicion when fingers were wrongly pointed at him and both Kate and Gerry McCann suffered when Portugese police wrongly made them arguidos for a time.
As the searchlight turns on boat-owners, those conducting the inquiry should be aware of the damage they could cause to people they regard as “persons of interest” to the inquiry.
In all likelihood the Australian woman seen at the bar in Barcelona will be tracked down, named, spoken to and then eliminated from the inquiry.
Everyone can understand the despair felt by the McCanns, but their honourable and understandable quest for answers must be expertly focused to avoid another media frenzy which fails to provide what we all want: the discovery of Madeleine alive so she can return to her tormented family.

Even from the night of May 3rd Gerry and Kate were pushing the "abducted by a paedophile ring" angle for all they were worth. IMO this nonsense about Madeleine being "envisioned" (literally) on a boat at the nearest large Marina was intended to put legs under this nonsense and distract from the suspicion they themselves were coming under from the P.J.

Portuguese police to probe 'Madeleine dumped at sea' claim Daily Mail
14th October 2007
Portuguese police are becoming increasingly convinced that Madeleine McCann's body was dumped at sea.
Detectives are believed to be keen to re-interview a British nanny who claims she saw a mystery boatman kicking at something in the middle of the night two days after Madeleine McCann disappeared.
Former Mark Warner nanny Charlotte Pennington said she spotted the man in a small dinghy just off the Praia da Luz seafront. She claims he was kicking at an object stored in the boat's hull.
When she moved closer to investigate, the man - whose name she has given to Portuguese and British police - stooped out of sight then hurriedly rowed away.
Portuguese police are taking the sightings seriously and Miss Pennington, 20, and are looking to interview her once again.
She was working in the Ocean Club's creche on May 3, the night Madeleine disappeared. She is the only person to have given a full, public description of the events of that evening.
She told police how she heard Kate McCann scream: "They've taken her" on the night of May 3, when Madeleine vanished, and that she saw the first official suspect Robert Murat standing outside the Ocean Club that night.
Miss Pennington said the man was wearing a reflective yellow jacket with a hood but she could not make out his face.
One police source today described the sighting as 'credible'.
Miss Pennington said: "I'm pleased they are taking this seriously as it means they aren't just looking at the McCanns as suspects."
Miss Pennington's account potentially tallies with repeated suggestions that Madeleine was smuggled out of the Algarve on board a boat, or that her body was dumped at sea.
It also tallies with a second report today claiming new evidence proves that Madeleine was alive when she was taken from her bed.
Police have been told Kate McCann knew instantly her daughter had been snatched because the bedclothes were in exactly the same position, raised above the mattress as if they were still lying over the little girl.
Friends of the McCanns believe this prove she was taken and did not just wander off, which would have ruffled the bedclothes.
The Daily Mail has a tendency to re-write and overwrite its articles. The article reproduced above was a re-write of a previous article that was published on 27 September 2007. A section of the original article was removed from the subsequent re-write and is reproduced here:
'Former Mark Warner nanny Charlotte Pennington said she spotted the man in a small dinghy just off the Praia da Luz seafront at 11.30pm. She claims he was kicking at an object stored in the boat's hull.
When she moved closer to investigate, the man - whose name she has given to Portuguese and British police - stooped out of sight then hurriedly rowed away.
Portuguese police are taking the sightings seriously and Miss Pennington, 20, has twice spoken to Leicestershire detectives about her evidence.
Yesterday Miss Pennington said the man was wearing a reflective yellow jacket with a hood but she could not make out his face.
However the following day she was shocked to see a man - whom she had come to know over the preceding week - wearing exactly the same distinctive jacket as the man in the boat.'

Thanks Verdi. As mentioned I seem to recall Goncalo Amaral in his book mentioning she was not interviewed, but since its been taken offline I didn't have time to check.
It's still very curious that she was so close to having the interview when leaving Peter Patterson so quickly, as well as odd that neither Kate nor David Payne were reinterviewed around that time.
Also, regardless of any possible effort to deflect with the 'sea' issue, I still wonder why Kate would ask Peter Patterson to, specifically, pray at the marina, when she would (presumably) have no idea he would repeat that in his interview.

Kate's "Diary" is one of the most curious pieces of a puzzle that the men of the Policia Judiciária tried to reconstruct in order to establish the facts surrounding the disappearance of Madeleine. The report of the first days spent in Praia da Luz was written after the event and reports a kind of "agenda" detailing what the McCanns and their friends allegedly did.
Two years later, day by day, it is interesting to compare Kate's report with what is known in the process. An exercise that reveals contradictions and surprises in its content.

So... make sure we all absolutely know what position the door was in... silence... dry hair.... make-up.... glass of wine.... then out.
Don't check the kids after all that because the earlier big pointer comment about the door... straight out to the tapas...
Right....
Later Kate mentioned the kids crying the previous night to Jane and how concerned she was etc....

She sold it to the News of the World so it would be read nationwide didn't she?....did Kate write the DIARY knowing it would be read?
Not directly of course, that wouldn't be seemly, nonetheless the NOTW agreed to pay an undisclosed figure to the Madeleine search (?) - another out of court settlement. By that time the report had already been read by the millions. As in a law court situation when the jury are asked to disregard something - too late, the damage is done as well they know!
Funny that innit?

Thanks Jill
I used the link above as it has other information as well as the diary.
Aimoo have changed their forum to a new platform, and for a few days last week I was devastated to think I had lost both the forums (research and reference). After 11 years of research, it was tough to think it had all gone and made it difficult to make any posts without the info I needed
However, someone helped me get it back but obviously they still have issues. Links don't work on page and now I find links TO the Aimoo forum don't work.
I'm just so relieved to have it back...I'll worry about the links later :)

Kate's Diary |
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] On 14 September 2008, the News of the World published extracts from 'Kate's Diary'. The newspaper claimed that the 135-page 'journal', written on an A4 pad, had been passed to them by a Portuguese reporter. When it became apparent that Kate had not given authorisation for its release, the online article was instantly removed. Both The Sun and the News of the World published apologies and made an undisclosed payment to Madeleine's Fund. Portugal's best-selling daily newspaper 'Correio da Manhã' had already serialised extracts from the diary during July 2008 without comment from the McCanns. |
Kate forced political pressure Correio da Manhã
Revelations – Maddie's mother's notes prove Gonçalo Amaral right
26 July 2008
Thanks to 'astro' for translation
The English prime minister called the couple directly and the British diplomacy took care of the travelling
"To increase the political pressure". The phrase, by Kate McCann, written among the notes that were found in her house and which the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) had apprehended, is clear about the manner in which Maddie's parents intended to manage their daughter's disappearance, bringing it into the press' first pages and turning it into a case with political outlines.

On the morning of the 23rd of May 2007 (twenty days after Maddie's disappearance), before they left for the Sanctuary of Fátima, Kate and Gerry left Gordon Brown a message. Maddie's mother describes it as a form of "raising the political pressure" and reveals that the present Prime Minister – at that date, he was not in functions but had already been confirmed as Tony Blair's successor – answered her only three hours later. He spoke with Gerry, was "very sympathetic and gave strength", tells Kate, who describes the visit to the catholic sanctuary as overwhelming, potent and emotional.
On the same day in the afternoon, Gordon Brown called Maddie's parents again. Kate's notebooks do not report the conversation but one is able to understand that the purpose was to create political pressure, forcing the PJ to act swiftly.
Today, at more than a year's distance from the child's disappearance and after the case has been archived, Kate's notes expose the pressures that were reported by the former coordinator of the case, Gonçalo Amaral, who from the moment when he was removed from the investigation, realised that the process would not produce an accusation.
With an investigation that was initially inclined towards the abduction theory, partly forced by the McCanns, the evidence of the pressures by the couple also explains the British press' posture in the coverage of the case, mainly from the moment when Madeleine's parents went from victims to suspects and arguidos. With the British prime minister himself supporting the McCanns, through direct and frequent phone calls that are revealed by Kate, it became almost impossible for the English government to help an investigation that had indicated the parents as guilty.
Apart from the contacts with Gordon Brown, Kate's notebooks reveal other important allies. From the hiring of Clarence Mitchell, who at that point in time worked for the government, as an assistant, until the conversations with the wife of Tony Blair, the former British Prime Minister.
Mitchell actually had a pivotal role in the propaganda machine that was built by the McCanns within a few days, and which counted on the great help from the British diplomacy in all the trips that were carried out by Kate and Gerry.
The first and most media-exposed [trip] – to Rome, to be received by Pope Benedict XVI – was suggested by the assistant, on the 27th of May, after speaking to Francis Campbell, the British ambassador at the Vatican. "Rome is already preparing itself", Kate wrote, anticipating that visit as what would become the "main" news on that day. One day later, the visit and the audience with the Pope were already confirmed, with a program that was prepared in a detailed manner.
On the 30th of May, after leaving the British consulate in Rome, Kate and Gerry, accompanied by the ambassador, made a strategic stop "for the photographers to catch an image looking at the Basilica", and continued towards the Vatican, where they spent a few minutes with Benedict XVI. A moment that was described as very emotional, positive and important, and that summoned "loads of" journalists and photographers, which is definitely a concern that is always present with the couple.
After Rome, Madrid, Berlin and Morocco followed, trips with the purpose of publicising Madeleine's face and which always relied on passages through consulates or receptions by British ambassadors and political representatives of the corresponding countries.
According to Kate's notes, the days started or ended with meetings, phone calls and emails. Cherie Blair, the wife of Tony Blair, Gordon Brown's predecessor, was one of Kate's contacts, as demonstrated by the reports of the 17th of July. Before Kate gives Sky News an interview, she speaks with Cherie, who agrees to make a 20 second videoclip about Maddie for the English channel. On that same day, Blair himself pledges assistance and makes himself available for whatever is needed.
Kate's notes:
"Left a message for Gordon Brown to call us in order to increase the political pressure" – Kate McCann, 23rd of May
"Gordon Brown called and spoke with Gerry – very sympathetic and gave strength. Somewhat emotive feeling afterwards" – Kate McCann, 23rd of May
"Clarence spoke to us about a possible visit to the Vatican. Rome is already preparing itself. Francis Campbell was spoken to" – Kate McCann, 27th of May
……………………….
The ambassador's solidarity
On the 4th [of May], only hours after the alert of Madeleine's disappearance was given, Kate wrote in her notes that the English ambassador, John Buck, had been in the apartment offering them his solidarity. She also noted the presence of two employees from the consulate and stressed the strong presence of the media on location. "There is news appearing in the United Kingdom", Maddie's mother remembered, also noting the "worrying" and "boring" presence of Yvone, the English social security technician who tried to understand whether there was anything in the family's life that might explain the child's absence.
It should be referred that on that very same day, the ambassador met with senior officials from the PJ to understand the outlines of the case.
…………………………..
The news
Abduction theory – On the first days after Maddie's disappearance, on the 3rd of May 2007, the abduction theory was the only one that was mentioned in the news. "Give back our Madeleine", the parents appealed, not admitting any other possibility.
Visit to Fátima – Twenty days after Maddie's disappearance, the McCann couple went to pray at the Sanctuary of Fátima. But before that, they called Gordon Brown in order to increase the political pressure.
Brown's pressure – Only five days after the McCanns' contact with the British prime minister, Gordon Brown's pressures on Portugal because of the Maddie case were already known.
McCanns at the Vatican - The trip to the Vatican and the audience with Pope Benedict XVI were suggested by advisor Clarence Mitchell, who mobilised British diplomacy in order to take the McCanns to Rome.

Secrets of Kate: Walks were staged Correio da Manhã
Notebooks of Maddie's mother reveal tactics with the British press
27 July 2008
Kate and Gerry McCann have controlled the media reporting their daughter's disappearance. In order not to be criticised by the British Press, Madeleine McCann's parents offered photoshoots, some of them during their usual morning walks – which were apparently routine but turned out to be pre-arranged, as Kate's personal notes reveal.

Kate managed the news and controlled the English Correio da Manhã
Maddie case – Press was manipulated in exchange for photoshoots
27 July 2008
Thanks to 'astro' for translation
The McCann couple took four hours to outline their strategy, went out for walks on request from the British photographers and escaped the Portuguese
Kate and Gerry McCann controlled the British media in the news coverage of their daughter's disappearance. In order to avoid criticism from the English press, Maddie's parents offered photoshoots, some of them during their usual morning walks in the Algarve – which were apparently routine, but previously arranged, as Kate's notes reveal.
"The British journalists were annoyed because they found out too late that I had been in the United Kingdom. It ended up with Justine receiving loads of phone calls and arranging for a photoshoot on the way to the church, to pacify them", Kate writes on the 5th of July, revealing a tactic that was adopted in the first days after the 3-year-old girl disappeared.
"Dress up and go for a walk. It had been requested by photographers and agreed that for sentimental reasons it would be good". This walk happened on the 7th of June, three days after Kate registered that she had been "annoyed" about the presence of Portuguese journalists outside the apartment. Before that, on the 19th of May, the photoshoot for the English newspaper 'Sunday Mirror' was previously arranged: "Us spending time with the twins for the Sunday papers".
In the same notes, Kate expresses distress about the Portuguese and the German journalists. On the 11th of June, in Morocco, after Kate made a positive evaluation of the trip because there were so many photographers present, the doctor remembers "noticing" Portuguese journalists. "We didn't want to give them a story", decided the McCanns, who classify the questions from the Portuguese as "sleazy and unexpected", even after preparation meetings that last "four hours": "I was very angry at a journalist today. I told her not to do so much detective work."
Concerning the editor of the 'Sun' newspaper, on the 11th of July Kate was assured that there would be no "adverse publicity": "She was really nice. Perfect solution", Maddie's mother noted.
Clarence replaced Justine when the tension rose
Clarence Mitchell was the first one to offer his face for the McCanns. He met Gerry on an occasion when the latter was returning from England, at the end of May 2007, at a time when he was part of the Consular Assistance Group, representing the Foreign Office. He took over the couple's defence on the 22nd of May, but returned to England in the mid-summer, when he was replaced by Justine McGuinness, who directed the campaign to search for Madeleine from the 22nd of June onwards.
The tensions between the McCanns and Justine were never evident. But the fact that she abandoned the couple's defence immediately after they were made arguidos and returned to England, remains unexplained.
Now, it becomes clear that the tension came from before. Justine and Gerry had already discussed the honoraries. The advisor wanted to receive overtime and demanded a payment that was above what had initially been agreed.
On the 28th of July, the tension between the family and the spokeswoman was obvious. Kate wrote in her notes that she [Justine] did not have good "interpersonal aptitudes" and that she could even be very "unpleasant". Kate remembered that there had been an argument between Justine and a relative and that Gerry had tried to calm them down. "It all ended well", Kate McCann concluded, but still seriously doubted the advisor's character.
Journalists far away from the house
The McCanns' first days in England were subject to intense media attention. They allowed themselves to be photographed with their children again, after they had agreed exclusives with televisions and newspapers to cover the return.
Days later, Clarence Mitchell opted for another strategy. He agreed with the English journalists that those would never persecute the McCanns again. In exchange, the couple's spokesman would supply fortuitous meetings, and in case the journalists would fail their compromise, he would exclude them from his contact list.
Everyone accepted. When in March CM [Correio da Manhã] tried to speak to the McCanns without going through Clarence Mitchell, we were intercepted by the police. The couple demanded that Portuguese journalists be forbidden from getting close to their house, and their neighbours were advised not to speak.
Robert Murat sues the McCann couple's friends
Robert Murat, the first arguido in the case of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, is going to sue some of the McCann couple's English friends.
According to news in yesterday's edition of 'Sol' newspaper, the Anglo-British citizen is going to advance with complaints over the crimes of perjury and slanderous denunciations, alleging that the English lied in the depositions that they gave to the Polícia Judiciária with the purpose to incriminate him.
Robert Murat, who is going to receive hundreds of thousands of euros in compensation from 11 British newspapers, was made an arguido only 11 days after the little girl disappeared, on the 14th of May 2007, after several friends of Kate and Gerry McCann referred his presence in the Ocean Club apartment on the fateful evening of the 3rd of May 2007, in Praia da Luz.
Notes
Newspapers Gerry is brilliant – "Gerry was brilliant again", Kate wrote in one of her usual accounts after the meetings with journalists, during which it was her husband who did the talking.
Maddie 14 months ago – Madeleine McCann disappeared 14 months ago from the apartment where she was on holidays with her parents, in the Algarve, on the evening of the 3rd of May 2007.
Investigation Case archived – The investigation started by focusing on the abduction theory and then on the possibility of an accidental death followed by the concealment of the cadaver. The process ended up archived.

Reports of the first day without Maddie tell of discomfort when faced with the investigators who searched for her daughter
Kate McCann did not like the Polícia Judiciária. On the first day without Maddie, a few hours after she had seen her daughter for the last time, in the apartment that they all occupied in Praia da Luz, the child's mother didn't hide the discomfort in face of the investigators.
In her writings, which were apprehended months later by the same PJ, Kate complained about the treatment that she had been given during her first questioning: "Nobody offered us a drink or food. All the policemen were informally dressed and smoking. No sympathy was shown. […] The police officer who drove us to the PJ was asking me questions and then he typed them down. Slow", says Kate, who also didn't like the fact that she had to return to the Judiciária a short while later.
"We got a phone call from the PJ saying that we had to return. We turned around and returned at 200 kilometres per hour. Scary once again", Kate continues, sparing the rest of the police forces no criticism. "The GNR appeared without being certain of their role – they seemed to be doing nothing", she underlined.
Kate equally didn't like to speak to Yvone, the English Social Security employee who worked at the Department of Child Protection and who later told the Leicester police that she had found the behaviour of the parents and of one of the friends to be strange. "Also Yvone. A bit boring, worrying, because I didn't know who it was", Kate reported.
In the same writings, and still remembering the 4th of May (the notes started to be written at a later date, allegedly upon medical advice), Kate McCann recollects that the British ambassador offered her help. And that there were also technicians from the consulate on location, and Madeleine's mother remembered a conversation with Robert Murat, during which he told her about his daughter and her similarities with Maddie.
Notes of Kate McCann
The GNR appeared uncertain about their role. They seemed to be doing nothing.
Nobody presented the police. No one offered us a drink or food. All the policemen were dressed informally and smoking. There was no sympathy shown and it was far from reassuring.
We left with the PJ and they drove at an exaggerated speed. I was very angry. Needless, frustrating, I felt so powerless."
May 4
British woman wanted to help the couple
Yvone was on holidays in the Algarve when she heard that Maddie had disappeared. The technician, who is an expert in cases of endangered children, rushed to offer her help, but later guaranteed to the police that she had not been well accepted. Yvone also said that David Payne, one of the friends, had advised the McCanns not to speak to her. She found the parents' behaviour strange.
Kate admits her daughter's death
Despite having only admitted it publicly in August, Kate assumed the possibility that her daughter was dead on the day after the disappearance. "Is she dead?" she questions herself in her notebooks, in a register of the 4th of May, after she was heard at the PJ in Portimão. The hypothesis that her daughter's disappearance is connected with paedophilia also haunted her: "Thinking about paedophiles makes me want to pull the skin off."
Police in force in the Algarve
During the first days after the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, the Polícia Judiciária only admitted the theory of abduction of the little girl in public, and mobilised extraordinary means into the Algarve. The directory of Faro, which is directed by Guilhermino Encarnação, was joined by brigades from Lisbon and elements of the Central Directory of Banditism Combat (DCCB), including its director, Luís Neves.
With the investigations centred on the abduction theory and with extraordinary means mobilised, alerts were sent to the borders, to the airports and to the Spanish authorities.
The PJ even asked for the population's cooperation to find Maddie, and one day later, Guilhermino Encarnação guaranteed that he already had a photofit of the child's [abductor], which would not be publicised.
Praia da Luz and its surroundings were patrolled by GNR men, car stop operations were set up on the roads that exit the Algarve, and the garbage collection was also followed.
A total of approximately one hundred men from the Polícia Judiciária were moved into the Algarve as early as in the first few hours after the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, which happened on the evening of the 3rd of May.

Kate's Maddie diaries leaked The Sun
Published: Today (28 July 2008)
EXCERPTS from Kate McCann's diary covering the first agonising weeks after daughter Maddie vanished have emerged.
They show that the desperate mum left messages asking PM Gordon Brown to "increase political pressure" to aid the search. After he phoned 40-year-old Kate and husband Gerry, she noted that Mr Brown was "nice and supportive" — but that she "felt a bit emotional after".
The pages were obtained from police files by a Portuguese paper.
Maddie, now five, went missing in the Algarve in May 2007. Disgraced police chief Goncalo Amaral, 48, has made fanciful claims in his new book that it was impossible to conduct the inquiry due to political pressure brought by the McCanns.
Family spokesman Clarence Mitchell said last night the claims were "distorted and ridiculous".
Meanwhile, shameless Amaral said yesterday he may write another book about the case.

Kate tried everything to accuse Murat Correio da Manhã
Kate's notebooks - McCanns and friends against the Anglo-Portuguese
29 July 2008
Thanks to 'astro' for translation
Madeleine McCann's mother engaged in collecting indicia that would lead to the accusation of the Anglo-Portuguese [man] over the little girl's disappearance
Kate McCann bet everything into blaming Robert Murat over the disappearance of her daughter, and it was with that purpose in mind and with the help of friends that she engaged in collecting evidence and in convincing the Polícia Judiciária of the Anglo-Portuguese [man's] involvement.
On the day that Murat is made an arguido, already after friends of the McCanns referred his presence in the surroundings of the apartment on the evening of the disappearance of Madeleine to the authorities, Kate registered in her notes that she had become "very hopeful, excited about this".
Three weeks later, Kate, who met frequently with the PJ during the investigation, writes that "Robert Murat continues to be the main suspect". "For good reason", she adds, lamenting that there is not "strong evidence".
When three of the friends are called to the PJ to repeat their statements following contradictions about the presence of Murat at the Ocean Club, on the 11th of July, Kate tries to excuse her friends with the fact that they were questioned in the presence of the Anglo-Portuguese [man]: "What happened was that they were questioned in the room, sitting beside Murat and his lawyer. He apparently said that they were lying, which made them quite angry. They started thinking that he was certainly involved. What was he hiding???"
In her notes dated July 18, almost two months after Maddie's disappearance and at a time when there are starting to appear indicia against the McCanns, Kate sounds disheartened and reinforces the accusations against Murat: "I had lots of hope that there would be progress in Murat's situation. I'm sure that he is involved and I feel like killing him, but I can't". Nine days later, Madeleine's mother receives a message from a woman that tells her that Murat tried to photograph the granddaughter of a friend, also three years old and blond, and Kate sends "the whole" information to the PJ. "I'm certain that he is guilty and I just want to scream", she writes on the 27th of July.
Premonition with Malinka
Sergey Malinka, aged 23, had been living in Praia da Luz for eight years. He was a friend of Robert Murat – one of the first suspects of the disappearance of Madeleine – and he ended up becoming involved in the turmoil of suspects because he was the last person to contact the Anglo-Portuguese [man] after the child disappeared. He was also close to Murat because he set up the online page for Romigen – the company that belonged to the Anglo-Portuguese and to Michaela Walczuch.
Although Malinka was only heard as a witness, he ended up becoming involved in the abduction. The questioning was hard and outside the PJ, the agents' irritation could be heard because the questions remained unanswered. His phone was tapped, just like Murat's, but nothing relevant was detected.
In her notes, Kate refers to Malinka as one of the persons involved in the little girl's abduction. The first indication is dated June 5 and also concerns Murat. "Robert Murat continues to be the main suspect and for good reason, but unfortunately there isn't strong evidence. Malinka and Michaela are also very much in the scene. I always had a bad premonition, uncomfortable, about Malinka. He is cold", wrote Kate, who later on supplied information to Método 3, a Spanish detective agency, telling them that a witness had seen Michaela transporting a child.
It is recalled that Malinka, of Russian nationality, was heard by the PJ on the 16th of May, two days after Murat was made an arguido and the PJ searched his house.
The Russian was damaged because there were equally suspicions in his past. Malinka reportedly engaged in sexual relationships with minors, which turned him into a potential predator. The fact that he is a computer expert led the Polícia Judiciária to admit that he might have abducted Maddie.
Jane Turnner (sic) guaranteed that Murat carried Maddie
Jane Turnner (sic), one of the Englishwomen that accompanied the McCanns on their holidays in Praia da Luz, guaranteed after the first few hours upon the disappearance that she saw a man carrying a child walking towards Casa Liliana (where Murat lived). Later on – and also facing the suspicions that befell the Anglo-Portuguese [man] - Jane said she was almost certain that the man she had visualised for a few seconds only was in fact Robert Murat.
The witness' statement was considered to be credible during the first hours and strengthened the suspicions that befell the Anglo-Portuguese [man]. Robert Murat ended up being the target of a search on the 14th of May and was heard at the PJ on that same morning, denying any involvement in the child's disappearance. The lack of indicia ended up determining his release.
Notes of Kate McCann
News about Murat. Initially very hopeful, excited about this, probably too much.
May 14
Murat continues to be the main suspect and for good reason, but unfortunately there is no strong evidence.
June 5
I had lots of hope that there would have been progress in Murat's situation and that they had more things about him. We have no understanding of it, is to lie with how many teeth have (Note: Currently seeking clarification on this sentence). Thinking about it causes so much anger and hatred in me. I am sure that he is involved and I want to kill him, but I cannot.
July 8
I am certain that he is guilty and I just want to scream.
July 27
Suspicions
Profile accused him – The English experts that elaborated the profile of the abductor guaranteed that in Murat's case it fitted to 90 percent.
Accusations from friends - A former friend of Murat gave the PJ a deposition telling that the Anglo-Portuguese [man] had strange behaviours when he was a child. It was one more fact against him.
Touched documents – Called during the initial phase of the process to work as a translator, Murat was caught by the PJ touching the inquiry's documents.

Couple didn't admit any responsibility in their daughter's disappearance and called the British ambassador, John Buck, to "take care" of the matter
When the Polícia Judiciária suggested that the apartment where Maddie had disappeared from might be contaminated, due to the responsibility of the parents themselves, who failed to immediately contact the authorities, thus allowing for several persons to enter the bedroom, the McCanns set the British diplomacy in action to "take care" of the matter.
"How does anyone dare to insinuate that our daughter's life may be in danger because of us?!" Kate writes in her notes dated June 17, showing she is "very angry". The McCanns didn't lose any time. "Gerry took the matter up". Madeleine's parents only needed to "call the ambassador" and a few hours later they had the guarantee that "the Portuguese police are going to publish a statement to clarify what was said".
"Olegário de Sousa was very embarrassed", Kate writes in her notes, after the couple stated that they were "prepared to do whatever is necessary" if the police didn't clarify Kate and Gerry's role in the investigation. Three days later, Kate writes that Olegário de Sousa needed to "wisen up" and reveals that she feels they are "going nowhere".
The "frustration" with the PJ starts being registered by Kate right after her daughter's disappearance. After an alleged sighting of Maddie in Morocco, on the 11th of May, Kate accuses the PJ of not having acted swiftly enough and of not doing everything that they can, given the fact that when they arrive in Marrakesh there are only images of the garage from the 14th onwards. "If the authorities had acted swiftly, we would now hold this potentially important information. She deserves better. We need everyone involved to give their best", Maddie's mother criticises.
Bed remained intact
One of the criticisms that is launched by Gonçalo Amaral in the book "Maddie, The Truth of the Lie", was the contamination of the apartment. The alert to the authorities was given very late and the GNR didn't protect the collection of the first residues, either.
When the PJ arrived at the house, everything had already been rummaged. There were hundreds of fingerprints spread all over the apartment, tens of useless residues that only made the lab technicians waste time.
One detail was, however, retained by the investigators. The bed where Maddie had allegedly been abducted from remained intact. The child's soft toy was also impeccably placed next to the pillow, in a scenario that seemed to have been set up. On the window through which Kate says the abductor took Maddie, there were only her own fingerprints.
Kate's notes:
"Frustration with a police employee: asking me where my little Madeleine might be…" May 14
"Very upsetting. If the authorities had acted swiftly, we would now hold this potentially important information. She deserves better. We need everyone involved to give their best" June 12
"How does anyone dare to insinuate that our daughter's life may be in danger because of us?" June 17
English attacked Gonçalo Amaral
Gonçalo Amaral, the coordinator of the Maddie case during the first five months, who never believed in the abduction theory, was harshly attacked by the English press – which is controlled and manipulated by the McCanns.
The former Judiciária inspector, who retired after a career of 17 years and published his theory about the disappearance of Maddie in a book, was removed from the case on the 2nd of October, the day of his 48th birthday.
When the investigation quit being focused on abduction, after the first DNA results and the action of the forensics dogs, Gonçalo Amaral was accused of being a "drunk".
The English tabloids, even the more temperate 'The Times', wrote that the Portuguese inspectors at the Polícia Judiciária, [who were] responsible for the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, had two hour lunch breaks, during which they ingested alcoholic drinks. Apart from the "well watered" meals, the British journalists accused Gonçalo Amaral of working only four hours per day.
The case which revealed itself as less of an investigation than a political and diplomatic process, ended up hastening the retirement of Gonçalo Amaral, who reports the pressures that he suffered, in the book 'Maddie, the Truth of the Lie'. The former coordinator of the process remains convinced that Madeleine McCann accidentally died on the evening of the 3rd of May, in the Ocean Club apartment where she was on holiday.
Manipulated press
The McCanns controlled the English press – which constantly attacked the Portuguese police – in order not to become the target of unfavourable news, and in exchange offered previously arranged photo shoots. This is admitted by Kate in her notebooks, namely on June 15, when she arranged "a photo shoot on the way to the church to pacify them". The editor of 'The Sun' newspaper guaranteed to Kate, on the 11th of July, that there would be no "adverse publicity". "She was really nice. Perfect solution", Kate concluded.

Kate tried to hide twins' tantrums Correio da Manhã
Kate's notebooks – Sean and Amelie were only 18 months old
31 July 2008
Thanks to 'astro' for translation
The concern with the image was such that Madeleine's mother became anxious when Amelie cried in front of the Portuguese journalists. Notes reveal some moments of tension
Kate McCann's notes are filled with details about the twin children and the manner in which they dealt with the rest of the family. Maddie's mother tells about the children's everyday life and often reveals some tiredness over the energy of the smaller ones. Sean and Amelie were born from 'in vitro' fertilization, just like Maddie, but apparently they failed to notice their sister's absence. Kate often tells that her two smaller children kept their own routines and she even reveals some guilty feelings over trying to get on with life with some normalcy.
It can also be perceived in some of the writings that Kate wanted to avoid the tensions with her smaller children to become known by the media. Just like she describes it about a tantrum from Amelie dated June 4, when the little girl started yelling in the car. "They fell asleep. Sean instantly, Amelie only after throwing a big tantrum while we tried to sit her into the baby seat – all in front of the Portuguese media!!! – and then we stopped on the way so we could cuddle them outside of the car trunk. I sometimes worry that Amelie may be missing Maddie more than we thought. Maybe I'm being paranoid?", writes Kate, who on the next day left her children in the crèche again. "After a shower and breakfast, take Sean and Amelie to the Kids Club".
On the 14th of June, Kate shows her tiredness again, not only over Maddie's disappearance but also over the care that the smaller ones demanded. "Sean slept with me most of the night after half an hour of hysterics at half past midnight", she reveals, while three days later she complains again that her children now fall asleep at a later time. "I tried to take Sean and Amelie to bed at around 7.30 p.m. but it took rather long again – especially AMELIE", Kate recognises.
On the 21st of June, Kate is ironical about the children's behaviour: "Sean and Amelie's biological clocks seem to have changed now. They go to bed later and they get up later!!! I think they are becoming Portuguese", says Kate, who on the 4th of May, during the first questioning, guaranteed that her children always went to bed at 7.30 p.m.
Kate's notes
"They fell asleep. Sean instantly, Amelie only after throwing a big tantrum while we tried to sit her into the baby seat – all in front of the Portuguese media!!!" - June 4
"Again we wake up relatively late, around 7:30 a.m., preceded by notification of the good morning by Sean and Amelie (...) After a shower and breakfast, take Sean and Amelie to the Kids Club." - June 5

Photographed during walks
In her notebooks, Kate tells that the walks with the twins were agreed with the English press. They were often photographed entering and exiting the apartment at the Ocean Club, in Praia da Luz.
Tension with her mother and support from her father
The disappearance of Madeleine McCann generated several tensions within the McCann family, namely between the McCann couple, but Kate's notes clearly reveal that the most difficult was the relationship with her own mother.
Despite the fact that her parents immediately travelled to the Algarve, just like several aunts that helped to take care of the twins during the times that followed the disappearance of Madeleine, Kate only found support with her father.
In her notes dated June 8, 2007, Kate reports that she was "upset and angry" with her mother. "At this moment, I could do without this kind of thing – I have enough to think about and emotionally exhausted", the doctor wrote, recalling an argument during a walk with the twins in the Algarve.
Five days later, at a time when Kate's parents return to the United Kingdom, Madeleine's grandmother shows her indignation with her daughter's attitude, at the same time when she ends up being appeased by her father. In her notes dated June 13, Kate writes that her mother calls her complaining about not hearing from her since the previous day, and saying she had "an awful day".
"I explained to her that I had been told that someone had given us the location of my daughter's body. Did she know that? No!!!" Kate remembers, referring to a letter from a supposed abductor that had been received at a Dutch newspaper. After the argument with her mother, Kate talks with her father, a conversation that calmed her down: "Deep down, he was very strong and he said some very sweet things".
PJ went to London to fetch diary
Kate McCann's diary, which is considered to be fundamental by the investigators due to the fact that it reveals the profile of Madeleine's mother, led the Polícia Judiciária to England to try to apprehend it but it was never validated as evidence and the process ended up being archived.
The document, which started to be written by Kate upon advice from a psychiatrist after her daughter’s disappearance, was discovered by the police in the Ocean Club apartment, in the Algarve, and was initially photocopied and analysed. But it was only in April, during their last trip to England, that the Polícia Judiciária was granted permission to formally apprehend the original document, a fundamental diligence that had been requested in September so it could be valued as evidence.
But the judge that held the process decided to postpone the validation of the diary, which therefore could not be taken into account within the Polícia Judiciária’s investigation – and in the meantime, the Public Ministry ended up archiving the case.
The authorities believed that Kate's notes revealed her personality, and therefore were determinant for the investigation, but they ended up never being able to use them as evidence.
Initially, the police only appended the copies of the document to the process, and the original was not apprehended because it juridically fitted within the concept of private correspondence, which is subject to a stricter regime. Meanwhile, the McCanns returned to the United Kingdom, which forced the Polícia Judiciária to request the apprehension of the diary through rogatory letters, which took months to receive a reply.

The disappearance of Madeleine prompted dozens of contacts to the authorities but the parents took none seriously
Kate and Gerry McCann were always suspicious about the indications from strangers that guaranteed to know the whereabouts of Madeleine. In the cases when money was demanded, Maddie's parents seemed to know that the leads were false, just like Gonçalo Amaral describes in the book.
In her notes, Kate always shows her disbelief concerning the reliability of the information, while Gerry (the situation is described in the former investigator's book) arose attention from the inspectors when, in the middle of a negotiation with a possible abductor, "he sucked on a lollipop in a relaxed manner, while reading banalities on internet sites and discussing rugby and football with one of the English policemen".
One of the cases happened on the 14th of June, long before the three detentions over extortion attempts were made, when the Polícia Judiciária received an email from an anonymous person who says he knows where Madeleine is. "Why are there so many crazy and evil people?", Kate writes in her notes that same day, in a comment about the situation, which she classified as something that could only be a "joke".
On the 28th of June, the process of the disappearance of Maddie makes the first detentions in Spain, an Italian and a Portuguese, due to attempted extortion. "It's all a bit weird", Kate comments. Five days later, Madeleine's parents receive a new email from the anonymous person who had established contact two weeks earlier. In her notes, Kate reveals that she has no doubts that it can only be someone looking for money and she congratulates herself over knowing that the man is going to be arrested: "I've had news about the Dutch extortionist – someone motivated by money. Anyway, he is going to be arrested tomorrow!!"
The couple's behaviour when faced with possible leads concerning their daughter's whereabouts, after a publicity campaign that went around the world and was built by the parents themselves, arose the investigators' attention, namely during one of the first days when Kate, faced with the possibility of finding her daughter, is upset about the speed that is attained by the police car.
Note's of Kate McCann
"We received a message from British police to go to the embassy. The Spanish police had received a call from a guy, Walter, who had information, but wanted to talk with us." -- June 6
"An anonymous person sent an email saying they knew who had Madeleine. Why are there so many crazy and evil people?" -- June 14
"The Dutch extortionist established contact via e-mail again today. Someone motivated by money." -- July 3
Process available on Monday
The complete process concerning the disappearance of Madeleine McCann will be made available to anyone who manifests a legitimate interest, from Monday onwards. That group includes the parties (arguidos, witnesses and lawyers) and also journalists, due to the fact that this is a process of manifest public interest. Yesterday, the court invited everyone who had already made a requirement for the process to deliver a CD to the secretary's office, so the digitalised process can be copied onto it.
From September onwards, the process will be available to the general public, and the investigation will be subject to the most rigorous scrutiny. Still, the judge's decision ends up being surprising, due to the fact that this case involves a minor, and there would always be legal artifices that would allow for the investigation to be 'barricaded'.
Lawyers want priority access to the documents
Carlos Pinto Abreu and Rogério Alves, the lawyers that represent the McCann family in Portugal, have requested the Portimão court for priority in the access to the process. The lawyers have ensured that the access for the general public was postponed, so they can access the original process and not a digital format.
Kate McCann's secret diary: 'How can I go on knowing Madeleine's life could have ended like this?' Daily Mail
By DAILY MAIL REPORTER
Last updated at 1:38 PM on 14th September 2008
Kate McCann's deepest thoughts have been laid bare in a private journal documenting her darkest days following the disappearance of daughter Madeleine.
Bleak thoughts of paedophiles, frustration at the Portuguese police and the daily struggle to keep the rest of her family together are just some of the frank and painful admissions, penned between April and July 2007.
The secret diary reveals for the first time the depth of personal despair and heartbreak faced by Kate and Gerry - and the strength their Catholic faith has given them.
At the height of the smear campaign against the McCanns, Portuguese investigators made extracts from Kate's diary public, deliberately selected in a bid to portray the couple as cold and dispassionate.
However, the full context of the journal has now been revealed in the News of the World.
The diary starts while Madeleine is still with the family, detailing the ordinary routine of family life.
On the day Madeliene disappeared the diary entry documents the children's bedtime at the apartment in the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz - where the family were staying during their holiday.
Kate reveals how she gave her children milk and biscuits before reading Madeleine a bedtime story.
It goes on to say: 'Kisses goodnight for M (Madeleine). Pulled the door to as far as possible without shutting it. Silence. Dry hair. Put make-up on. Glass of wine. Restaurant.'
Kate and Gerry then left the children alone and asleep to dine with friends. Just hours later Madeleine was gone, believed to have been snatched from the apartment.
On May 4 - the day after Madeleine's disappearance - Kate documents the couple's first visit to the police station, after a frantic night of searching.
She says: 'Nobody from the police introduced themselves. Nobody offered us a drink or food. All the police dressed informally and smoking. No sympathy was shown and far from inspiring.'
In the days after Madeleine's disappearance, Kate talks of the couple's desperation and the struggle to remain strong for their two other children, twins Sean and Amelie.
She also reveals how the couple put on a 'presentable and healthy' air when facing the press - and how the family marked Madeleine's fourth birthday on May 12 with a special mass at a church in Praia da Luz.
However on May 30, after nearly four weeks since their daughter went missing, Kate's inner turmoil threatens to overwhelm her.
She says: 'Tomorrow it will be four weeks since Madeleine was taken. Four weeks since we saw our special little girl. We are not certain we will ever see her again, but know that we have to keep up our hope and strength - for the others, at least. Exhausted. I love you so much Madeleine. You must come back.'
Just two days later, her thoughts become darker.
On June 1 she writes: 'Can't stop thinking about Madeleine, about her fear and pain.
'How can I go on knowing that her life could have ended like this? This week I have been quite overtaken by black thoughts.
'Please God, bring her back.'
The month of June documents the McCanns' attempts to retain some element of normal life for the sake of Sean and Amelie.
They go for the occasional jog, spend time playing with the twins - but Madeleine is constantly in their thoughts.
Any feeling of joy - however small - is tinged with guilt and regret that Madeleine is not there to share in it too.
'How can this end well now?'
Kate reveals how she wrote to JK Rowling for help in keeping Madeleine's plight in the public eye and how thoughts of paedophiles made her want to 'tear at my own skin'.
She tells how both Gordon Brown and Tony Blair - along with wife Cherie - phoned the couple to offer their support.
This was also around the time that the McCanns were subjected to the beginnings of a smear campaign by the Portuguese police, who claimed fundamental evidence had been lost because the crime scene had been contaminated by the McCanns themselves.
Throughout the diary, the depth of the McCann's Catholic faith is evident and shows how it has given them strength.
Entries are littered with pleas to God and detailing their frequent visits to mass.
Kate also reflects on the difficulties she had in conceiving Madeleine, recalling the IVF treatment.
Her entries are scattered with signs that the couple are losing hope.
On June 23 she writes: 'Will we ever see her again? How can this end well now? She's so precious. God, I need you to do something soon. I'm so desperate and suffering so much.'
During that month Kate talks of how she received two books of messages from the public.
While the majority of the messages were supportive she was shocked by three horrible messages - one which simply said 'RIP Madeleine' and another which was written by a former police officer.
As time goes on the diary becomes less about documenting the couple's struggle and more of a tool to communicate with her daughter.
More and more messages to Madeleine appear in the entries and Kate also talks of her difficulties maintaining relationships with friends from home, with the exception of those directly involved in the case.
'Today I washed Cuddle Cat. I was hoping not to do until Madeleine retruns'
On July 12 Kate reveals her deep hatred for the person who took Madeleine and the significant moment she had to wash the youngster's favourite toy, Cuddle Cat, which still had on it the faint scent of her daughter.
She said: 'I hate the person who took my Madeleine - the same one who has caused all this trouble, who made us feel worthless and mistrustful and mainly who has frightened my beautiful Madeleine. I will never forgive that person/those people for this. Never.
'Today I washed Cuddle Cat. I was hoping not to do it until Madeleine returns, but it was now quite quite dirty and smelly, unfortunately without the smell of Madeleine on it.'
That month the couple are also faced with the harsh reality that their daughter might be dead when it is suggested that Madeleine is buried by a cliff.
Kate continues to document the torment of losing Madeleine while trying to keep a normal family life for Sean and Amelie.
In her last entry on July 31 before her diary was seized by the Portuguese police she said: 'My sweetheart, my darling, my love, my companion. I love you more than anything. I'm going to dream that I'm lying by your side - moments I'll always cherish and I long to have again.'

My sweetheart, my darling...Kate McCann's secret Madeleine diary revealed Daily Mail
By TOM KELLY
Last updated at 12:32 AM on 15th September 2008
McCann's secret diary recording her private hell as she struggled to cope with her daughter's disappearance was revealed yesterday.
The journal describes how she was overwhelmed by 'black thoughts' as she contemplated Madeleine's ordeal and her anger at those who judged her 'calm and controlled' behaviour at press conferences.
In one entry, the depths of her anguish are laid bare as she addresses her missing daughter: 'My sweetheart, my darling, my love, my companion. I love you more than anything.
'I'm going to dream that I'm lying by your side - moments I'll always cherish and I long to have again.'
The 40-year-old GP also attacks the Portuguese police as 'morose' and outlines her frustration at their uninspiring hunt for the three-year-old less than 24 hours after she vanished.
Mrs McCann started the 135-page journal a few days before Madeleine went missing from the apartment in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz where the family were holidaying.
A copy of the journal was later seized by Portuguese police and selected extracts leaked to the local media in an apparent attempt to depict Mrs McCann as cold and emotionless.
But on Sunday, the diary was published in full after a Portuguese journalist, angry at the alleged smear campaign, handed a copy to The News of the World.
In it, Mrs McCann gives a detailed account of putting Madeleine to bed on May 3 last year, before heading out to dinner with her husband and a group of friends.
She wrote: 'Brush teeth. To the bedroom with the kids.
'M pulls away and puts her head on pillow. Kisses goodnight for M. Pulled the door to as far as possible without shutting it.
'Silence. Dry hair. Put make-up on. Glass of wine. Restaurant.'
She later describes the frantic hunt for her daughter after discovering Madeleine had vanished as they ate.
'No sleep, Gerry and I started looking through the streets around 06.00 as it was starting to get light. Nobody around. Why not? Desperate.
'Minutes seem like hours. Outside of the apartments masses of people asking questions about that night and for descriptions of Madeleine.
'Long day.'
Mrs McCann also describes the scene later that day when they were taken to the police station in nearby Portimao to give statements.
She wrote: 'Nobody from the police introduced themselves.
Nobody offered us a drink or food. No sympathy was shown and far from inspiring.
'The police officer who took us by car to the station was the one asking the questions and afterwards typed the answers on a typewriter. Morose.'
Mrs McCann also records her anger at the constant questions about how she managed to appear so 'calm and controlled' during appeals.
She wrote: 'They know so little.
'Nobody should judge or criticise because, unless they have already been in this situation, they have NO IDEA how they would be and certainly NO IDEA how painful it is. NO IDEA AT ALL.'
And she tells of her private agony over her daughter's ordeal, noting on June 1: 'Can't stop thinking about Madeleine, about her fear and pain.
'How can I go on knowing that her life could have ended like this? This week I have been quite overtaken by black thoughts.'
She also reveals why she took the agonising decision to wash her daughter's toy Cuddle Cat: 'Today I washed Cuddle Cat. I was hoping not to do it until Madeleine returns, but it was quite dirty and smelly, but unfortunately without the smell of Madeleine on it.'
A month after her daughter's disappearance, she describes how thinking about paedophiles 'makes me want to tear at my own skin'.
She adds: 'I was never in favour of the death penalty, but these people should be kept in a secure place.
'Whose human rights are more important? Those of a paedophile or of a vulnerable, defenceless child?
Madeleine McCann: Kate McCann's diary reveals anguish of losing her Telegraph
The diary of Kate McCann has laid bare for the first time her inner despair at Madeleine going missing in Portugal.
By Richard Edwards, Crime Reporter
Last Updated: 10:03PM BST 14 Sep 2008
The entries reveal frustration at the Portuguese police from the very start of their investigation, her darkest thoughts and fears, and her daily, desperate pleas to God for her prayers to be answered.
At the height of the smear campaign against the McCanns, Portuguese investigators made extracts from the diary public, deliberately selected in a bid to portray the couple as cold and dispassionate.
The full context of the journal, however, written in an A4 pad, have been revealed in a tabloid newspaper after being leaked by a Portuguese reporter.
On the night of May 3 when Madeleine went missing from their apartment in Praia da Luz, and early the following morning, Kate suggests that no police were helping in the search.
The diary says: "No sleep, Gerry and I started looking through the streets at 6am as it was starting to get light. Nobody around. Why not? Desperate."
She said that when she finally talked to detectives they were unsympathetic and "far from inspiring".
Kate signs every entry off with a personal message of her love for Madeleine, but admits that with each night it became harder to go to bed without her.
On June 1 she writes: "Can't stop thinking about Madeleine, about her fear and pain.
"How can I go on knowing that her life could have ended like this? This week I have been quite overtaken by black thoughts. Please God, bring her back."
The next day she writes: "Cried in bed - I can't avoid it. I need her close to me. Thinking about her fear of pain breaks my heart.
"Thinking about paedophiles makes me want to tear at my own skin."
The diary also reveals how she wrote to JK Rowling for help in keeping Madeleine's plight in the public eye and that Gordon Brown, Tony Blair, his wife Cherie and David Miliband phoned the couple to offer their support.
It was written between April and July 2007, before police seized it as their investigation turned on the couple.
Kate McCann furious at publication of diary in Sunday tabloid Daily Mirror
By Rod Chaytor
19/09/2008
Kate McCann was last night said to be devastated by the unauthorised publication of her diary in a downmarket Sunday newspaper.
Her diary was seized and photocopied by Portuguese police three months after daughter Madeleine, then three, vanished.
Extracts appeared in the paper without Kate or hubby Gerry's prior knowledge or permission last weekend. A pal said last night: "Kate is angry and upset.
"She is furious her innermost feelings have been revealed. Worse still, it looks as if she has consented."
Because of its sensitive nature, the material was not included in 19 files made public by prosecutors.
The friend added: "The suspicion is these diaries have been leaked by someone in the Portuguese authorities."
Lawyers for the McCanns are thought to be demanding an apology and payout for the Find Madeleine fund. The McCanns will not comment
Kate McCann: An apology The Sun
Published: 19 Sep 2008
THE article headed "Kate's Secret Diary Revealed" which we ran this week stated that Kate McCann had released entries from her diary to the News of the World. This is incorrect.
The extracts from Kate's diary were published by the News of the World in the mistaken, albeit bona fide, belief that they had her permission to do so whereas Kate neither approved of nor knew that the extracts were to be published.
We sincerely apologise to Kate for our error and for the distress caused by it
Kate McCann apology News of the World
20/09/2008
Last week we published extracts from Kate McCann's diaries and explained in the article that we were doing so to "nail the lies" about Kate created by selective leaking from the diaries by Portuguese police.
We published the extracts in the belief held in good faith that we had Kate's permission to do so. It is now clear that our belief was misplaced, and that in fact Kate neither approved of nor knew that the extracts were to be published.
Upon learning of our error we immediately removed the extracts from our website and we today offer Kate our immediate and sincere apologies. We have agreed to make a donation to be used in the search for Madeleine. The News of the World remains wholly supportive of the McCanns and their continuing campaign to find their daughter.
Paper's Apology over Kate's Diary Sky News
11:16am UK, Sunday September 21, 2008
The News of the World has apologised to Kate McCann for publishing extracts of her diary without her permission.
The Sunday tabloid also said it had made a donation to the fund set up to find her missing daughter.
Last week's edition devoted the lead story and four other pages to revealing the 40-year-old's "black thoughts" and her dreams of lying beside Madeleine again.
Extracts were printed after the diary was seized and then leaked by Portuguese detectives investigating the three-year-old's disappearance in Praia da Luz on May 3 last year.
The paper's six-paragraph apology, on the second page of this week's edition, says: "We published the extracts in the belief held in good faith that we had Kate's permission to do so.
"It is now clear that our belief was misplaced, and that, in fact, Kate neither approved of nor knew the extracts were to be published.
"Upon learning of our error we immediately removed the extracts from our website and we today offer Kate our immediate and sincere apologies."
The tabloid's sister paper, The Sun, also published an apology for the "error and for the distress caused by it".
A spokesman for the McCanns was unavailable for comment when contacted by Sky News Online.
The size of the donation to the Find Madeleine fund is not known, but it is not the first time a newspaper has apologised to the little girl's parents.
The McCanns won a £550,000 libel settlement and apology from Express Newspapers for suggesting they were responsible for Madeleine's death.
The Daily Express and Daily Star both carried front-page apologies, with the headline: "Kate and Gerry McCann: Sorry."

Re: 1-13 now the 14th (McCanns paid £500,000 to Lord Bell and £30,000 to Hanover See BP secret vid) of MANY Discrepancies. Who Was Lying?
Quite SHOCKING to realise that if Kate knew Maddie had died that this DIARY was a 'fake' and likely written to be READ! They received £125,000 HUSH MONEY
