Paedophile abducted Madeleine, police say - Telegraph 6th May 2007

Post by kangdang on 08.09.10 22:34

An interesting Telegraph article dated the 6th May 2007. I have two reasons for posting, my first - it gives good insight into the thoughts and utterings of the McCanns and the initial direction of investigation undertaken by the PJ. My second reason - to document the article for future reference, as many of the early articles have disappeared.

Police searching for Madeleine McCann, the British toddler abducted while on holiday in Portugal, fear she has been seized by a paedophile.

Officers have a prime suspect but were last night refusing to release any details, including a sketch, for fear of endangering Madeleine's life.

They believe the girl, whose fourth birthday falls this week, is alive and may be being held no more than three miles from where she was abducted. They fear they are now in a race against time to find Madeleine, known as Maddy, before she is murdered.

She vanished between 9pm and 10pm on Thursday night from her room at a holiday complex in Praia da Luz, a fishing village on the Algarve, as she slept between her twin brother and sister, aged two.

Their parents, Gerry, a consultant cardiologist, and Kate, a part-time GP, both 39, were eating with friends at a tapas bar a minute's walk away.

More than 150 people were involved yesterday in the hunt for Madeleine, as tensions grew between the family, from Rothley in Leicestershire, and Portuguese police over the way the investigation has been handled.

Speaking from Glasgow, Philomena McCann, Madeleine's aunt, accused police of being uncommunicative and said: "My brother is at his wits' end. They have just played [the disappearance] down from the minute he approached them."

She said that Madeleine "is the centre of her parents' universe, she is an integral part of the family, a big sister. She is the Pied Piper, the little princess, the focus of every day for the parents. I cannot understand why anyone would do such a wicked thing to this family."

Senior officers have indicated privately that they suspect the motive for the abduction is sexual. Portugal's Judicial Police, the equivalent of Britain's CID, held a press conference yesterday at which they denied being slow to react.

Guilhermino Encarnacao, the director of the Judicial Police in the Faro region, said there were "many elements" which pointed to an abduction but he refused to give even the sex of the suspect. He also declined to indicate whether his men were looking for a named individual, or simply someone fitting a description.

Mr Encarnacao said police believed Madeleine was still alive and that airports in Portugal and neighbouring Spain had been alerted. Police had received more than 30 calls with possible new lines of inquiry, all of which were being followed up.

Asked about claims that a British man had reported seeing a child with two people, Mr Encarnacao said this was one of the many pieces of information being investigated.

There was confusion yesterday over early reports that there had been a break-in at the McCanns' two-bedroom, ground-floor apartment at Ocean Club, a resort run by the Mark Warner travel company.

Trish Cameron, Mr McCann's sister, said on Friday that she received a telephone call from her brother, who was "hysterical and crying his eyes out".

She said: "They had put the kids to bed at 7pm and checked on them every half-hour as they had dinner nearby with the rest of the party. Gerry said the window was open, the shutters broken and the door, which had been locked, was hanging open."

But Robin Crossland, the administrator of the resort said he had been present when the McCanns were first interviewed by police soon after Maddy vanished. "They clearly said that they had left the French windows unlocked as they were using them to access the apartment to check on the children throughout their meal," he said

On Friday night, Mr McCann appealed to his daughter's abductor: "Please let her come home to her mummy and daddy, her brother and sister."

Mark Warner operates a drop-in creche during the evening, but it is understood the McCanns opted to leave their children - all conceived through IVF - in their apartment so they would get a proper night's sleep, and then check on them regularly throughout the evening.

Brian Kennedy, who is Maddy's great-uncle, and his wife, Janet, attended a prayer meeting at Rothley Parish Church, close to the McCanns' home. "We fear the worst but we are hoping for the best," he said.

Portuguese police have a mixed clear-up rate with missing person cases, while sex crimes are on the increase. Currently, 75 people remain unaccounted for, seven of whom went missing as children, according to the police website.

A two-year-old girl, Sofia Andrade de Oliveira, was snatched from home in Madeira three years ago and still has not been located.

I have decided to add another Telegraph article, the well known 12:01am 4th May 2007 article.

Three year-old feared abducted in Portugal

Madeline McCann was due to start school in September

he parents of a British toddler who has gone missing while on holiday in Portugal say they fear she has been abducted.

Three-year-old Madeline McCann disappeared last night from her parent’s rented apartment in the Western Algarve, while they dined nearby.

Sniffer dogs have been brought in by Portuguese detectives to comb the Mark Warner resort where the girl was staying and the nearby seaside village of Praia da Luz.

A family friend said the child’s parents, Gerald and Kate McCann, were certain she had been kidnapped.

Jill Renwick, told GMTV: “They were just watching the hotel room and going back every half-hour and the shutters had been broken open and they had gone into the room and taken Madeleine. They went out about eight, went back in at nine, they were fine, went back in at 10 and she was gone.”

She described the missing girl as a “very pretty, very blonde three-year-old” and said the couple, from Leicester, also had twins.

Ms Renwick said of the holiday: “This is the first time they have done this. They are very, very anxious parents and very careful and they chose Mark Warner because it is a family-friendly resort.”

The manager of the resort, John Hill said around 60 staff and guests at the complex had searched until 4.30am while local police notified border police, Spanish police and airports.

“It was a very emotional and very frantic night and everyone did a fantastic job of getting involved and trying to search the area,” he said. “As you can imagine, Madeleine’s parents are distraught and not doing very well at all.”

He said there was no physical evidence that the girl had been abducted from the apartment while they ate at the tapas restaurant 200 yards away.

“It’s still questionable as to whether it’s an abduction,” he said. “We are hoping that Madeleine is found as soon as possible and safe and well. Everybody here is just wishing that she is found as soon as possible.”

A Mark Warner spokesman said counsellors are being flown out to the resort, which the firm has run for two years, to support the McCanns.

Members of their family would also be flown out if required.

He said: “Our priority is to find the girl and to make sure that the parents are OK and there are masses of people working on that.

“Our staff are looking after them at the moment in whatever way they can but we can only imagine how awful it is for them.

“We are all hoping that she is asleep under a bush somewhere and we will find her soon.”

He said the apartment the family were staying in was surrounded by other apartments, all of which have “quite sophisticated” locks on the doors.

Guests are being asked if they saw anyone acting suspiciously in the area, he said, adding that Mark Warner has never had cases of missing or abducted children before.

“We are hoping it’s not that, though,” he said. “It’s the last thing we want but we have to investigate all avenues.”

He said Mark Warner offers families a baby-sitting service where they can drop off their children for the night.

“Those facilities were available but for whatever reason they were not being used,” he said.

Madeleine lives with her parents, Gerald, a doctor, and Kate McCann, and younger sibling twins in Rothley, Leicestershire.

Neighbour Penny Noble said: “We are absolutely devastated. They are a really nice family and good neighbours.

“They are delightful. We see them take their bikes up and down and going for walks.

“Madeleine is a very happy-go-lucky little girl”.

It is understood Madeleine is due to start at school in September.

Sofia was SNATCHED by her father!

He was sentenced to 6 years or so.
Her parents were split up.

What's this got to do with madeleine? Couldn't they find a different little girl who was really abducted by a paedophile there??

If the photo of Gerry and Kate was taken at the time, Gerry is smiling at / laughing with Sean and Kate looks relaxed, as you would of course if your first child had just been abducted, I suppose.nah
They are also both wearing jeans, so it's not that hot.
