Parts of Portugal are burning - four dead, several hundred injured so far

Post by Tony Bennett on 11.08.16 10:27

A drought for many months and a recent heatwave have caused over a dozen major forest fires in Madeira and in northern Portugal around the town of Agueda in Aveira province in the north of Portugal over the past few days - pictures here:

The Portuguese government is on the point of declaring this a 'disaster'

I'm a bit baffled as to the relevance of this news. Hot countries are always like tinderboxes in summer months. It seems that in Madeira (which isn't mainland Portugal) the fire has been declared foul play and two people have been arrested - much the same as many fires started in Australia for instance.

It's the norm for fire services to request assistance from other areas/countries when things become uncontrollable. These things are in place. Australia does it, the USA and Canada have it in place to call upon assistance from other areas too.

Whilst it's absolutely tragic for people to have died in a fire I don't understand the reason for flagging up a major fire in Portugal on the forum.
