Re: Private Eye still watching the McCanns
Ian Hislop has held back tonnes of stuff on the McCanns, imo, because he knows they are so litigious and PE can't afford yet another libel suit.
But I expect the Mcs will get an entire souvenir issue all to themselves, if this case is ever resolved and they are exposed for what they really are.

Re: Private Eye still watching the McCanns
" untold distress " ?
Have they ever considered the "untold distress" which Madeleine and her siblings were forced into when they were (supposedly) left night after night alone?!
Just whose "side" are these "journalists" etc on?
Not children as far as can be seen!!!
Oh the poor Drs McCann , my heart does so (not) bleed!!!
Pfft!
My opinion only for what it's worth!

Private Eye is a very sarcastic publication, MM
I've been buying it since the 1970s. There's more truth in there than you'll get in any mainstream paper in the UK. Mind you, that wouldn't be hard.

Would not surprise me in the least. Hislop and his team watch like hawks.BarryTheHatchet wrote:Ian Hislop has held back tonnes of stuff on the McCanns, imo, because he knows they are so litigious and PE can't afford yet another libel suit.

I think you’ll find it is Ian Hislop, as editor, that can’t afford another libel suit, rather than PE itself.
I believe he is under threat of immediate incarceration next time he is ‘Carter-Rucked’.
eta:
Can't find anything about this threat on-line anymore. I thought it was from our friend Justice Tugendhat, but I may be wrong and getting confused with TB's case.

Oddly enough the only reference to this I can still find on-line was from PeterMac on this forum a couple of years ago:

He was warned personally by Eady J, I think, or possibly Tugendhat J, that he will be sent to prison for any future finding against him.
I actually think Private Eye is better for that, as you can rely on what is said to an even greater extent than before, with the knowledge that there is proper evidence for them to fall back on.

Can’t see why Hislop would have had it removed under the “right to be forgotten’ nonsense, as it’s a bit of a badge of honour, unless it’s as a protection for himself in case he does get sued again and he hopes people may have forgotten the threat. It must have been recorded for posterity in the court records though and they will always be there, even if we cannot easily get to them.

Re: Private Eye still watching the McCanns
Hislop is not to be trusted on this. The article quoted is clearly attacking the Express group and he has expressed support for the McCanns before now. Private Eye has published nothing supportive of Amaral or critical of the McCanns. Hislop comes from a military family, we all know what sort of connections they have. In my experience, the military, police, politicians, local government, civil service, business and the judiciary tend to have something in common, and we know that "thing in common" has featured before in this case. Maybe he was invited to join by his father? Anyway, I think that might be a factor here. Who knows? They don't advertise membership do they?
Quite a good discusson of Hislop here:

Re: Private Eye still watching the McCanns
I don`t trust Hislop either. See how he screws his face up if someone swears or says an even slightly mucky joke on HIGNFY. I`ve always thought of him as a thoroughly stuck up ultra right wing bore.
Hislop was at Magdalen college Oxford same time as William Hague - that`s probably how Hague got on to HIGNFY.
George Osborne also went to Magdalen College but some years later. Do these alumni types all stick together I wonder.
