Madeleine McCann’s parents have warned anyone caught selling ex-police chief Gonzalo Amaral's book in the UK would face legal action.

Kate and Gerry McCann already face fresh heartache after the cop who led the bungled hunt for their missing daughter said he plans to sue them.

Amaral is set to demand compensation from Gerry and Kate McCann after he won a libel court case appeal.

The 56-year-old claims the couple cost him money and harmed his reputation during the long-running legal battle .

Portuguese legal sources say the compensation bill could run into the “hundreds of thousands of Euros”.

"CAUGHT SELLING" ! Since when has selling a book NOT held to be defamatory in any jurisdiction in the known world been a crime ?

Oh, sorry. In the McCann parallel Universe, where what they say, is law. 

Who do they think they are ?

I wonder if it was a source close to the family who watched Fahrenheit 451 on the plane home that has brought this up.

We have some crazy things here in Sweden but this could never happened here.
A book was released a couple a years about our King Carl-Gustaf XVI and the book claimed that our King have visit Escort girls....etc
Our King doesn't take the laws by his hand but the McCann's do.

They are showing the world their true colours now and it's not pretty. No more hiding behind Carter Ruck injunctions or ' a source'. I read earlier that this could have something to do with the Gaspar's statements but whatever is going on I doubt they can ban the sale of a book that is legal and saleable as confirmed by a court of law.

Knowing nothing about the law of the land, I wonder if the Mccanns have any basis for making this threat, other than an attempt to intimidate. I would never have believed that a rich powerful celeb could bar the papers from revealing what everyone else can read about abroad ( not that want to read about his sordid little life, but there is a principle.) Strange that people think this is a free country.

I wonder if the book can now be published in all other countries except the UK which would be a start. I looked it up on Amazon and even the Italian (I think) and German and other versions weren't available.  It could be published in Australia and NZ in English.    And they'd have to sue in each individual country.  Keeps the legal firms in business I suppose.

I remember when Spycatcher was banned in the UK.  You could get it in Australia and they say 1000s were sent over here via the post.

In theory yes the internet makes it more difficult - Australia could sell it in English and in theory you could order and ship it. Few people would wish to, especially if it already exists (free) online ready to read on kindle / ibooks etc.

IMO, their threat is aimed at Waterstones / Amazon-UK or any other big bookshop-chain to dissuade them from ordering up a big stock and spreading them around the country. Their fear is that it would sell quite well - just look at the MSM sales every time there is Maddie story.

I hope they do publish an English version though. It might not sell a lot of copies here, but it would be a moral victory for Amaral. The cherry on top of yesterday's cake, as it were.

What a prospect! Both of them edging fifty, youth spent,  with only the prospect of fire-fighting into old age. Perhaps they can't live without the drama.
Meanwhile the world chunters on reading what they feel like reading and reaching their own private conclusions, which they can't touch - unless they invent a skull-penetrating reader. A McScanner? When MI5 open their files that possibly means more than we can believe.  It's been the threat forever now. Can we surmise from this that MI5 have the case all sown up, just can't reveal that's the case.  Sounds a bit like it can be used at some stage, so when will be the correct time. It may be revealed to us all if it ever got close to a court case.  I hope I have been clear here in what I am trying to express.  joyce1938.

I have a feeling the amount of people interested in the book has probably doubled overnight (if not more). The Daily Mail has advertised it, both in the headlines and in the comments, people are sending links to it everywhere possible. Things have never looked worse for the McCanns, but, incredibly, they're off again, with more headlines about suing in the Uk. More publicity.

What they actually need to do to effectively counter Amaral's book, is to explain all the reasons why he is wrong to draw the conclusions he has. Unless of course they can't.

Up to now, they have used the argument that Amaral's book is harming the search for Madeleine, which of course it is not, in the sense that the debate over whether the McCann's were involved in their daughter's disappearance has kept the case in the minds of the public. The legal battle between the McCanns and Amaral has the same effect. Ironically, every time they succeed in banning Amaral's book from being sold, they themselves are harming the search for Madeleine.

Could this be the reason why CM is in Australia? Getting in first, before the Truth of the Lie is on sale there?  Anyone who has worked in the corridors of power will know that most are in the know, weeks before the story appears in the public domain, and I have NO doubt that Team McCann will have known well in advance, the way things were going in Portugal.

I was just thinking about this. I have never been a supporter of the high-level cover-up theory, believing that if GM and KM were responsible for what happened to MM, that they acted on impulse in deciding not to own up to what they had done. I don't think Gordon Brown's involvement was anything other than compassionate concern, or that Clarence Mitchell became involved for any other reasons that that the McCanns paid him a salary and that he wanted to be in the right place at the right time to benefit from an exclusive publishing deal once the case had been solved.

I think, the government, the media and the public all wanted to believe the best of the McCanns, many were persuaded that British doctors could not possibly have been involved. I think the government agreed to fund a review into MM's disappearance, not because they knew too much about the case, but because they knew too little, no one looked properly into the case from the point of view of the Portuguese.

However, now that the government have spent £12,000,000 of public money, sent Scotland Yard to Portugal (probably to realise exactly what the Portuguese already knew nine years ago) I wonder if everyone concerned with the McCann case is now involved in a face saving exercise to limit the damage to themselves as individuals and to Britain's reputation in the eyes of the world.

Perhaps Sir Philip Green and Richard Branson would care to obtain the book the "Truth of the Lie" and give them out as gifts?

I know this is off topic...........but I can't stand that smug look.
Back on topic.....this statement that they've made might actually make the book sell more.

In the aftermath of their libel case defeat, the parents of missing Madeleine McCann are reported to be threatening people found selling the damning book "Truth of the Lie" that has been once again freed from censorship.
 
The UK’s Daily Mirror claims Kate and Gerry McCann “have warned anyone caught selling ex-police chief Gonzalo (sic) Amaral’s book in the UK would face legal action”.
 
But the story fails to address the fact that, right now, there is no legal basis for this tactic.
 
Amaral’s thesis will be returning to bookstores in Portugal next week as both he and his publishers Guerra e Paz have won the civil action lodged against them.
 
It is possible the McCann’s lawyers will argue that the appeal they claim to be lodging with Portugal’s Supreme Court could cover threats of legal action - but this is also debatable, say legal experts.
 
“The book is not held to be defamatory in any jurisdiction in the world”, said one - pointing out at the same time that an appeal to the Supreme Court in Portugal is equivalent to an appeal to the House of Lords in Great Britain.
 
“These courts only listen to cases involving important points of law, of general public importance”, he told us. “They are not interested in facts, nor minor squabbles - nor whether the Court of Appeal has made a good or bad decision.
 
“They are only interested if they have to clarify something which the substantive law has not made entirely clear”.
 
In other words, an appeal by the McCann’s to continue their action against former PJ coordinator Gonçalo Amaral “may not even be entertained”, said the source.
 
Be that as it may, the fallout from Tuesday’s decision is reverberating through the world’s media channels, particularly as Amaral has hit back almost immediately with the news that his lawyers will now be suing for compensation.
 
The bill “could run into the hundreds of thousands of euros”, writes the Mirror, explaining that Amaral is said to be suing for “years of financial losses in which his good name has been called into question”.
 
Negotiating with his publishers today, the former detective confirmed to the Resident that “what the McCanns are doing is illegal. I am in talks with my publishers for a book in the English language, as there is as yet no publisher in the UK, the USA, Australia, New Zealand - not even Amazon - that is selling it.
 
"The McCanns will learn to respect the right to opinion and freedom of expression”, he added - stressing that “any version” of Truth of the Lie in English that can be found on the Internet is also illegal, as neither he nor Guerra e Paz publishers have given their authorisation to translations.

No country that bans the private ownership of firearms can by definition be classified as being free. There are of course a whole multitude of other reasons why the UK  cannot be classified as a free state, but the aforementioned prevents it from even beginning to qualify.

The last thing I was thinking about was gun ownership. Freedom of expression is my concern.

Amaral may just be making a technical point that the translations on the internet are nothing to do with him, as I am sure he is fully aware, that without these ‘illegal’ translations, which have drawn so many people into the case, he would not have had the volume of support he has had from the UK.
