It's been the law in Northern Ireland to microchip dogs since 2012.

But tomorrow night, Tuesday/Wednesday at midnight, it will become law in the rest of the U.K. - Wales, Scotland and England - for all dogs aged over 8 weeks to be microchipped.

The Daily Mirror ran a major article on the subject today, answering some FAQs, so I'll include that at the end.

Here are two short 4-minute videos, the first being a short interview on the BBC with their IT correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones. which gently introduce some of the latest developments:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L26w5jNAmW0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xm7m_XzED50

Here is a short extract from the Wikipedia article on RFIDs - 'chips' in other words - or Radio Frequency Identification devices:

Government control[edit]

Some individuals have grown to fear the loss of rights due to RFID human implantation.

By early 2007, Chris Paget of San Francisco, California, showed that RFID information can be pulled from individuals by using only $250 worth of equipment. This supports the claim that with the information captured, it would be relatively simple to make counterfeit passports.[103]According to ZDNet, critics believe that RFID will lead to tracking individuals' every movement and will be an invasion of privacy.[104] In the book SpyChips: How Major Corporations and Government Plan to Track Your Every Move by Katherine Albrecht and Liz McIntyre, one is encouraged to "imagine a world of no privacy. Where your every purchase is monitored and recorded in a database and your every belonging is numbered. Where someone many states away or perhaps in another country has a record of everything you have ever bought. What's more, they can be tracked and monitored remotely".[105]

The microchipping agenda has been raised more than once in relation to the reported disappearance of Madeleine McCann. Several commentators have suggested how, if only Madeleine McCann had been microchipped, we would know where she was taken.

The subject of Madeleine and microchipping was actually raised by one of the McCann Team's employees, the strange, spiritualist lawyer from Madeira, Marcos Aragao Correia.  Here's a short extract from a long article I wrote about him seven years back:

-------

QUOTE

The journalist then asks Aragão Correia to comment on the PJ investigation.

He answered: “The information that I received as a medium didn’t allow for me to understand what the criminal’s motivation was. But information that I obtained later on - especially from consulting an excellent book by criminologist Barra da Costa - led me to believe the theory, admitted by the former PJ Chief Inspector, that the police weren’t interested in finding Maddie, nor in catching the real culprits over her disappearance. Dr Barra da Costa said in his book that there was something like a tacit plan to induce a general sense of insecurity across society, to allow for the micro-chip (a device implanted in human beings that gives out signals to track down where they are) to be produced on a major scale.

“At the beginning I had some reservations concerning that issue, because I had never heard about it, but I was interested enough to go on the internet and to consult several credible websites, including FBI and CIA sources, where I found some amazing things: the micro-chip was indeed being promoted as the ideal weapon to prevent crime. These sources added that the population should be induced into accepting this technological revolution, even if it was at the expense of a policy of deliberately promoting mass public insecurity. Well, the Maddie case fell like ‘manna from heaven’ for the promotion of the microchip, especially as far as children are concerned”.

And on that very puzzling note, the interview with Aragão Correia ended.

I am adding a poll on this mysterious and controversial subject.

Here is today's Mirror article:

Dog micro-chipping law will see owners fined hundreds as 1million pets are still not registered

An estimated 1.4million of the UK's dogs are yet to be registered as the micro-chipping deadline looms on Wednesday

Pic: Dogs can be identified by having their microchips scanned

Thousands of dog owners are set to face fines of several hundred pounds as more than 1million dogs have still not been micro-chipped before it becomes law to register pooches in just two days time.

By Wednesday all dogs must be micro-chipped under a new legal requirement which sees the creation of the National Canine Database.

The new measures aim to create a central database listing every dog in the UK, making every pet owner responsible for the registration of their pooch. It is hoped this will reduce the number of dogs being dumped as well as the lucrative black market trade in animals.

But despite efforts to publicise the new measures, it is estimated that more than 1million of the UK's 9million dogs have still not been microchipped.

This leaves thousands of Britain's dog owners in danger of being fined up to £500 each for not getting their pet registered in time.

If yours is one of the 1million dogs, here's everything you need to know to meet the deadline...

What does a microchip do?

The sterile microchip is roughly the size of a grain of rice and is implanted just under your dog’s skin between its shoulder blades.

Each chip contains a unique identification number that is listed on a national database which holds all the owner’s contact details such as their address and phone number.

If a dog is lost or dumped, a warden will be able to scan the chip and find the owner’s details immediately.
Lee Paris, campaigns manager at charity the Dogs Trust, says: “Having a dog microchipped should give owners peace of mind, because all dogs have the capacity to escape, no matter how responsible the owner is. This will make it much easier to reunite worried owners with their pets.”

Microchips have been a legal requirement in Northern Ireland since 2012, now England, Scotland and Wales are set to follow suit.
The microchips are tiny and virtually painless to implant but can help reunite missing pets with their owners.

Why are microchips a legal requirement?

Nearly 120,000 dogs are dumped or lost each year and less than half of those are reunited with their owners.

That leaves local councils and animal welfare charities facing a £57million bill to care for and re-home these unfortunate animals. And nearly 7,000 dogs have to be put down each year because no-one can care for them.

Lee says: “The Dogs Trust and other charities are full to the brim. If we can’t take a dog from a local authority after seven days, they have to be put to sleep.

“The microchips could make a huge difference. If local councils can trace the owners within a day, it means we can focus on re-homing dogs that people are genuinely unable to care for any longer and are handed over responsibly.”

Microchipping will also combat the black market in stolen dogs, which is worth more than £100,000 a year in the UK. And it will help police prosecute the owners of dangerous dogs and make things harder for traffickers smuggling dogs into the country and bypassing strict quarantine laws.

What if I don’t have my dog micro-chipped?

You will be breaking the law. If you are stopped by a council or police officer and they discover your dog is not chipped you will be given an enforcement notice, giving you 21 days to comply with the law.

Fail to do so and you face a fine of up to £500.

Lee says: “You can’t drive without a licence and it will be a similar situation for dog owners. It will be your responsibility to make sure your pet is microchipped.”

Poc: An estimated 1.4million dogs are yet to be chipped

How can I get my dog microchipped?

Any vet will be able to do it. They normally charge £20 to £30. Local authorities can also fit a chip. Some do this for free, others charge a small fee.

The Dogs Trust has volunteered to fit microchips at its re-homing centres and community events.

The charity has now fitted nearly a million microchips, most since the new law was announced three years ago.

Lee says: “This month has definitely been the busiest we have seen for chipping pets as a lot of people have left it late to comply with the new law.

“We have a website www.chipmydog.org.uk with an interactive map to help people finding their nearest re-homing centre or community event.”

What impact will it have on my dog?

Some dogs who are nervous about visiting the vet may get a little stressed, but having a microchip implanted does not hurt.

It is no different to having an injection. Vets are used to chipping much smaller animals than dogs, but if you do have a
small breed and are concerned, you can opt for a mini microchip.

Lee says: “I’m a squeamish person, but I’ve seen lots of dogs microchipped and most of them don’t even realise it has happened. It only takes a few seconds and the dogs are ready to go.”

Pic: A vet holds a microchip identity tag

Will my dog be microchipped when I get it from a breeder or re-homing centre?

The law requires every dog over eight weeks-old to be fitted with a microchip. Re-homing centres will chip a dog before finding it a new owner.

Breeders should too, as the law says the first registered owner for all dogs should be the breeder.

This will help prospective pet owners to find out whether the dog they are buying has come from an illegal puppy farm in this country or overseas.

Lee says: “There are lots of things people should do when buying a puppy.

“Buy from a Kennel Club registered breeder and ask to see the dog with its parents.

“But microchipping is something else they can ask about. If the dog they are buying isn’t chipped, they need to ask themselves whether something isn’t quite right.”

How often will my dog have to be microchipped?

Your dog only needs to be microchipped once as the chip will last its whole life. You just need to contact your database and tell them when you move home or change your phone number.

If you fail to keep those details up to date you face a £500 fine.

Lee says: “If you don’t update those details the microchip is completely useless.”

If there is any truth in this then surely that would explain the government involvement?

That would also mean that Madeleine's disappearance was pre-planned (Quote Gerry "F*ck off, I'm not here to enjoy myself") and that she really is safe somewhere and that Sue Healy's claim that evidence (blood/cadaver odour) was planted is true.

It would also make sense of Gerry's quote that "confusion is good" and Madeleine's eye defect was a "good marketing ploy". An eye defect that turned out not to be as bad as 'marketed', but sufficient to make people look for a non-existent child.

It would also make sense of the McCann's releasing photo's of a younger Madeleine, also to throw people off the scent.

It would also make sense of Gerry saying: "We want a big event to raise awareness that she is still missing. It wouldn't be a one-year anniversary, it will be sooner than that."

It would also make sense of Clarence Mitchell giving up his government job to become the McCann's spokesman even though potentially Madeleine could have been found at any time. It would explain all the pointless, ludicrous stories he's planted in the media and why all missing children are associated with Madeleine McCann, even though their case may not be anything like hers.

It would also make sense of Kate McCann becoming an Ambassador for Missing People and why she and Gerry are protected and have become celebrities.

It would also make sense that this whole case has been an expensive charade to cause unrest across society.

Maybe Madeleine had to be whisked off somewhere so she couldn't be recognised until 10 years later when her appearance had changed. Maybe she will be found, after all these years, alive and well like other abducted children, having been looked after like a princess in the lawless hills near PDL and which is why Kate says she feels closer to Madeleine in PDL. Maybe she's been somewhere safe all along - wasn't one of the questions asked of Kate that she was going to give Maddie up to someone else?

But how would Eddie and Keela fit into all this? Is it possible that microchipping was the agenda from the off, but something went wrong and Madeleine really did die but the charade had to continue regardless because microchipping is 'necessary'?

Or were the "unreliable" dogs another distraction because "confusion is good"? Is that why they were allowed to leave PDL despite being arguidos, free to ruin Amaral's life, to go on to become celebrity millionaires?

Is that why the McCann's went from this:

Hmmmm - at the risk of being labelled a conspiracy theorist:

I did ponder about the booking against apartment S708 near the bottom of the OC guest list below (clientos directos booking by Chris Garveigh for one person, Duane Wessels):

http://www.mccannpjfiles.co.uk/T/03_VOLUME_IIIa_Page_617.jpg

Doing a bit of digging it seems most likely that Seven Eye is a tracking system developed for refrigerated transport. The company itself is called Seven Telematics and is based in Ipswich.

http://www.seventelematics.co.uk/french/news.html

As you can see, the company offers 'prizes' of a holiday in Epiche, close to Luz.

Seven Telematics is part of an eclectic group of privately owned companies, Seven Group Limited. One of the other companies is a property company, with properties to let on the Algarve, including the villa below, in Luz.

http://www.sevengroup.co.uk/

http://www.sevenpropertygroup.co.uk/algarve-holidays/our-properties/casa-dos-passarinhos

Duane Wessels seems most likely to be this bloke:

https://uk.linkedin.com/in/duane-wessels-78976b64

He is from Ipswich, and is on Facebook and spends a lot of time in and around Luz.

More than likely just a golfing holiday or something similar but the fact that it overlapped with the critical week; was a single person (business?); and the Seven Eye tracking system connection; made/make it moderately interesting.

One of the conspiracy theories, some years back, was that Philip Edmonds' company, Stemcor, of which he was a Director, was engaged in the manufacture of highly specialised steels which were used in microchip production.

The presence of a Director of one of the world's major steel companies - and one related to the Oppenheimer family and Lady Margaret Hodge - was always something that raised one's eyebrows.

But AFAIK no-one has been able to develop that particular theory.

I expect that Textusa/Maria Santos would say he was a 'swinger'

I don't recall hearing of a referendum or census to gauge public opinion on this subject - was the canine population consulted, or their owners?  Or has the government again taken it upon themselves to make monumental decisions on our behalf?  Have they forgotten who pays their wages?

This is what I find most frightening.  The populace are being slowly but surely stripped of their identity as individuals.  Every aspect of our lives is being controlled - I don't like it!

I find the whole thing rather creepy.  It seems government/agencies have had an agenda for years now to constantly know our every movement.  Rewind 70-80 years ago the Nazis attempted it in one go.  Developing their numbering system during the holocaust. Which IBM alleged to have a hand in.
It is then alleged there's a link between IBM and the invention of the barcode. And from there barcodes to microchipping isn't that great a leap.

These days the methods of imposing stuff on citizens to keep a beady eye on them is done in a drip drip fashion. Eg it's supposed to be a bit of fun to have an app on your smart phone that links to your Facebook page to say 'I am currently in such and such place at such and such time'.  Therefore is it much of a stretch once everybody is settled, and all dogs are chipped.  An app is brought out in partnership with the chip to constantly monitor where you take your dog.  But the reason they'll give for it is A) in case your dog goes missing or B) to catch people who don't pick up their dog muck.

Just my opinion

Soz a bit off topic.

Your phone knows where you are. Apple iPhone stores information about your location from your gps. If you have IOS 7 or IOS 8  then you can access the information yourself. If you erase the history and turn the "app" off, it still tells Apple where you have been and are right now, just your phone stops storing the info.
Information such as all addresses visited show up, and how long you stayed there.

I'm pretty sure Android will have the same, Google and such like.
Just Google "where am I"... is it correct?

Welcome to the future!

One interesting thing is how the mass media, BBC and mainstream press etc. produce lots of stories of the alleged manifold blessings of this RFID and microchip technology - but never seem to give us the kind of information you've just summarised for us above

Cat Jarvis, a Cats Protection spokesman, said compulsory tagging should include felines.

She said: ‘We can’t stress enough how important it is that cats are microchipped. Thousands of cats go missing every year and our research has found that almost one in two cats never return so we recommend microchipping as a safe and permanent method of identification.’

The charity hopes that the UK will make microchipping compulsory, following the examples of European nations including Spain and Belgium.

Animal welfare minister George Eustice said of the rules introduced today: ‘Microchipping is vital for good dog welfare and a simple solution for responsible pet owners to provide peace of mind and ensure your much-loved dog can be traced.’

Councillor Simon Blackburn, chair of the Local Government Association’s safer and stronger communities board, said the new law would free up public money spent looking after stray dogs.

What about rats?  Plenty of them in the corridors of Westminster - now there's a genuine cause for tagging.   Come to think on it, they're not likely to go wandering off are they, at least not permanently - more's the pity.

Can we microchip off-shore tax haven tax-dodge trusts - and so help to keep track of them?

Does microchipping of dogs and cats actually work??

A cautionary tale:

QUOTE Comment in today's Daily Mail:

We took in a stray cat and had him for a year. When we took him to the vets for dental treatment it turned out he was microchipped. As it was a Saturday the vet just gave me a Tel no and told me to contact the centre that dealt with the personal details of the owner (it turned out the vet should do this).

As I was a member of the public, they couldn't give me the contact details of the owner. I rang the centre twice but they hadn't got hold of the owner. Still don't know if they did, so what is the point of paying for your cat to be chipped if they don't let you know when it is found?

Sadly he died. He was called Lenny and the post code started with BB1 - he was a long haired grey moggie.

I`ve just had my old dog micro-chipped.  He is 16, deaf and blind and never leaves my side (literally). Even though I explained to my vet that he would never get lost, I was still threatened with `the law` and `fines`.  It is not true that it doesn`t hurt them - he yelped loudly and then snapped at the vet.  OK I can understand younger dogs being chipped considering the number of dogs in Rescue Centres but not my old fellow.

Yes, they were discussing this on Radio WM and one of the reporters was at the vets while someone's dog was being microchipped and the dog yelped loudly. It was really quite upsetting to listen to it.

They say it's only as big as a grain of rice, but that's massive when it's being injected!

If puppies/kittens are to be microchipped then surely the time to do it is when they are under sedation being neutered/spayed (which should be law).

No way will I be getting my elderly cat microchipped. Just getting him to the vet in his carrier is stressful enough for him, but to have that done aswell would be too much for him.

Not a chance girlno

Poor old dog.

And poor old vet.

After all, he was just obeying orders.

Your dog should have been able to snap at an M.P. - they made these laws.

Come to think of it, how many of them voted against this measure?

Did you know that these devices gradually 'bond' with the surrounding skin tissue?

That makes it MUCH more painful for any human or creature to have one removed.

I began this thread because I wanted members and guests here to stop, pause and think about precisely where we are heading with this technology.

And to think that poor Madeleine McCann is one of the excuses being used to promote microchips...  angry2

No, I didn't know that. That's horrible.

But if all humans had to have one fitted would it be placed in the same place for everyone?

If so, what's to stop an abductor cutting it out because they would know where to find it?

If given to a young cat or dog they tend to migrate as the skin in a young animal is very loose. Our dear old Pointer his microchip ended up at the top of his left leg it has migrated so much during his life.
The needle to administer is a very wide bore needle and yes it must hurt as the chip is almost shot in.
