More than £10 million has been spent on the investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, it was revealed tonight.

Home Office minister Lord Bates said the total cost up to the end of June was £10.1 million and the department has budgeted a further £2 million for the investigation over the next year.

Madeleine - who was three when she went missing from the family's holiday apartment in the Algarve, Portugal, on May 3, 2007 - has become one of the most famous missing person cases of all time.
In 2014, Metropolitan Police officers were sent to Praia da Luz as part of their continuing investigation into her disappearance.

The figure was disclosed in an answer to a written parliamentary question in the House of Lords.

Lord Bates said: "The total cost of the investigation in to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann (Operation Grange), up until end of June 2015, is £10.1m. The Home Office has budgeted £2m for the investigation in 2015/16.

"The Home Office funds this work from the Special Grant budget. The level of funding provided to the Metropolitan Police in relation to this investigation is reviewed regularly and will continue to be monitored."

It will be very interesting to see how this report develops.  I've had a cursory glance through today's House of Lords proceedings (questions, members and speakers) but haven't seen a single thing that even remotely relates to Madeleine McCann, Operation Grange, the Home Office or the Metropolitan Police.

It seems to be a rather insignificant subject for the majesty of the House of Lords and it's customary purpose.  If there was a question raised in the House, I should very much like to know why and more importantly, if there was a reason given for continuing an investigation into a crime committed on foreign turf (at the expense of the UK tax payer) which is clearly not making any progress towards a positive result.

I can't see any mention on the House of Lords twitter thingy either.

I've also searched and can't find anything.  Wondering if it's recycled from a few months ago, as the report only states "it was revealed tonight".

Wouldn't be the first time reports relative to this case have been recycled would it?  Hope the paper it's printed on is recycled - otherwise the Amazon rain forest will be history by the end of this year.

There is a topic on the forum, "Cost of Madeleine McCann inquiry set to cost £10 million".  Perhaps a rehash of that report?

At a given moment, when Oprah tells Kate that she heard her mention a blanket several times, Kate argued that a mother who misses a child always wants to know if she is comfortable, if she is warm, and added, referring to Maddie, that sometimes she asked herself if the person who had taken her would cover her up with her little blanket (but the blanket was on the bed after Maddie, supposedly, disappeared!!!).

Somebody called Lord Black of Brentwood put in a written parliamentary question, and the Home Office Minister in reply quoted the figures on Tony's original posting, and said that £2 million had been already been earmarked for the inquiry to continue next year.  The maddest bit of it came near the end of the report which blithely said that it had been set up with the agreement of David Cameron at the request of Kate and Gerry McCann. (!!!) ... as if what they want automatically goes through on the nod.  The way it was written makes me think that bit was meant to sound as odd as it does... Curiouser and curiouser...

Exerpts from Wikipedia about Lord Black of Brentwood.

'Guy Vaughan Black, Baron Black of Brentwood FRSA (born 6 August 1964) is Executive Director of the Telegraph Media Group and a Conservative Life Peer member of the House of Lords...'

In 1996 - 'Director of the Press Complaints Commission (PCC). During his time there he was responsible for the tightening of the Code of Practice in the wake of the death in 1997 of Diana, Princess of Wales, and for putting in place the arrangements to protect the privacy of Princes William and Harry. During the passage of the Human Rights Act 1998, he successfully campaigned to have special protection established in the legislation to protect freedom of expression...'

'In December 2003, Black became Director of Communications for the Conservative Party, and Press Secretary to party leader Michael Howard, the Leader of the Opposition.'

'Black returned to the media after the 2005 general election, joining the Telegraph Media Group in September that year.'

In September 2009, be became Chairman of the Press Standards Board of Finance (PressBof), the body responsible for funding the PCC and overseeing the industry's system of self-regulation...'

A big beast indeed.... Interesting.

Lord Black, previously Guy Black is and has been involved with the Telegraph from an exec & non-exec perspective. Tory peer, mate of Call Me Dave also a mate of the delightful Rebekkkkah Brooks. Was involved in Leveson on the side of the Press.

The McCann case began under New Labour (Tony Blair's and Gordon Brown's premierships) It was that bunch Mitchell worked for as media monitoring supremo. GM was rumoured to be a close in Labour Party supporter. Is there some connection with New Labour and the McCann case, other than what is common knowledge? Whatever others believe I do not think Cameron is in any way deeply involved personally. So what if Rebekkkkkkah Brooks lives not far from him, and is said to be in the 'Chippbng Norton Set'. I am not convinced the case is important to them of itself. Murdoch is another matter, but he too would surely have an eye to the main chance. GM and KM cannot possibly be big buddies with these people, such that they owe them personal loyalty. What on EARTH would they have in common?

So NO 'urgency' there then! (to 'find/search for/ 'hunt'' a 'LIVE' Madeleine)

Another £2 million 'set aside' for NEXT year's 'search'!

Lord Bates, Minister at the Home Office for the Conservatives.
Has he anything to do with Theresa May's department, Home Secretary, Home Office?
Seems as though certain parties are pushing an agenda again, cost of the case, missing persons, Facebook, the s**m fragrant Rebekah Brooks back at News Corporation, Rupert's favourite, along with AC, CB, TB, DC?

Towards the sea?

Towards the ocean?

How about, he was heading south?

There is a lot of south in Luz from the Smithman point that is not the sea and is not the ocean.

The Dolphin and Kelly's are but two examples.

Full Express rubbish here:

Six months to find Maddie: Police get £2 million to solve mystery

MADELEINE McCann’s parents have been told that Scotland Yard has another six months to find their daughter. Despite fears the probe would be wound up, police have been given £2million to carry on the search until next spring.

By TRACEY KANDOHLA AND DAVID PILDITCH
PUBLISHED: 00:01, Sat, Sep 19, 2015

Last night Kate and Gerry said that they were “extremely grateful ” that the inquiry will go on.
Their daughter vanished aged three on holiday in the Algarve, Portugal, in May 2007. The £10.1million cost of Operation Grange had raised questions about whether the investigation should continue

Former family doctor Kate and heart specialist Gerry, both 47, had been braced for the operation by Scotland Yard to be axed.

But the couple have refused to give up hope that their daughter, who would now be 12, is still alive.

They have put thousands of pounds into a special fund to continue inquiries should the police investigation be halted without having found what happened to her.

Last night Clarence Mitchell, the couple’s spokesman, said: “Kate and Gerry remain extremely grateful to the police for the work that has been done and continues to be done in the search for Madeleine.

“They are pleased that funding is in place for at least part of next year. They know the investigation cannot go on for ever.”

The £2million funding for the Yard was announced by Home Office Minister Lord Bates who said: “The level of funding provided to the Metropolitan Police in relation to this investigation is reviewed regularly and will continue to be monitored.”

The disappearance of Madeleine from the resort of Praia da Luz sparked one of the biggest missing person investigations in history.
But the Portuguese investigation was marred by blunders from the start and was shelved the following year.

The McCanns, from Rothley, Leics, were forced to hire private investigators until David Cameron stepped in four years ago and promised “new action”.

A task force of 37 detectives carried out a review of the case, trawling through documents, witness statements and other evidence.

Two years later, Operation Grange was upgraded to a fullscale investigation after detectives identified a series of potential new suspects and leads.

Portuguese police went on to re-open their own investigation in 2013. Earlier this month, Scotland Yard’s former Flying Squad chief John O’Connor urged the force to consider winding down its hunt for Madeleine, saying: “You can’t keep chasing shadows.” Not a single arrest has been made since Operation Grange began.

But Portuguese police revealed the British investigation is still “very much alive” after Scotland Yard made a fresh request for information.

Prosecutors said they received the written appeal over the summer holidays and it was being passed on to the team of detectives leading the investigation in Portugal.

Last May, on the anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance, the McCanns spoke of their enduring suffering over their loss, saying: “The love, support, help and prayers that we continue to receive from so many people encourages us, maintains our hope and lifts our spirits. Madeleine is missed every day.”

The total cost of the investigation, into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann (Operation Grange), up until end of June 2015, is £10.1m. The Home Office has budgeted £2m for the investigation in 2015/16.
The Home Office funds this work from the Special Grant budget. The level of funding provided to the Metropolitan Police in relation to this investigation is reviewed regularly and will continue to be monitored.

£2m is historically about the annual budget figure.

No mention by Lord Bates that this will be the end of it.

£2Million to last another 6 month to cast the net ?  Not looking promising at all.

Four years into the investigation with 6 months remaining to cast the net or to zero in on targets, no one knows but we can all guess.

If they already knew who the abductor was, they won't need to wait for 6 months to wind down.

The report on OG imminent wind down next spring came from Kate's gym mate and CM's coffee drinking buddy, Tracey Kandohla, she could only have got this from the horse's mouth.

Not long now .....
