I must have been born a republican because I can remember, as a little girl, thinking `who is this person I should ask god to save?`.  After all I didn`t even know her.  Also no one asked me if I wanted to sing to her.  Mind you I thought the same about this entity everyone was calling god and telling me to sing to.  Talk about indoctrination gone mad.

Well done to JC for not singing it.  I`m a realist and recognise that we haven`t seen anyone `real` since Tony Benn - all we`ve had is slick, plastic puppets spouting the same old rhetoric, and they all look the same.

I liked  Corbyn's  novel approach to PMQs today. Ask questions that
members of the public would like answered. Sounds reasonable to me. He might just wipe that smile from Cameron's smirking upper class twit face yet.

Brilliant!

In fact.. regardless of the opposition questions, this should ABSOLUTELY be part of Parliamentary procedure.

I get it now!! All those times I've seen Wayne Rooney with lips closed during the anthem before the big matches was because he was an atheist or a republican . Here's me thinking he was just too thick to remember the words.

You've actually read the whole piece? Amazing! BTW: who's Marshal Wade?

Reminds me of John Redwood attempting the Welsh anthem.  Very funny.

What is this crap?

"As part of the Privy Council ceremony, politicians kneel before the Queen and kiss her hand."

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-34275164

This is an outrage in modern society.

Don't do it Jeremy.

My own King would probably fall off his bicycle -in stitches- if someone tried to kiss his hand.

Ridiculous anachronism

This is the main reason they are going after Jeremy.

He's opening a can of worms.

And rightly so.

About time we let light in on the (sarc)"magic"(/sarc) of the royal family.

I still can't believe kneeling and kissing hands is required.

It's madness.

I also don't get why the PM needs a weekly meeting with the Queen or she has a privy council if her role is purely ceremonial and she has no real power.

We are fed horse manure about them.

We need it opening up and a real discussion about what it's all about.

Up the Republic.

Putting aside the royalist argument for the moment, I believe that JC is between a rock and a hard place. I don't support his politics, but I have always admired the man for his principles and sticking by them. Whatever JC does now, that he's the leader of the second party in the UK, is going to be difficult. Without him bending, he's going to snap, and if he deviates from his long-held principles -the principles that have made the man what he is - he's going to be accused of selling his soul to the Devil, and opening him up to a barrage of flack.

It's easy to say what you want to say, when there is very little chance of one putting those beliefs into action, as N Clegg found to his downfall. It was fine promising the electorate that, if the Lib Dems won power, they would abolish student fees. But as Harold Wilson once said " a week is a long time in politics" and it wasn't too long before Clegg found himself in a position he could only have dreamed about, but the chickens were about to come home to roost. Not only did he NOT abolish the student fees, but he AGREED with the Conservatives, and put them up by thousands of pounds each year. How history has a habit of repeating itself. It will be interesting to see how JC copes with this vicious circle he's found himself in.

Now back to the Royal Family. I have problems with those who think that, in today's society, people should be bowing down to other people. HOWEVER, it's not getting rid of the Royal Family that is of concern to me; it's what will fill the vacuum, and the alternative doesn't bear thinking about.

Edited to add,  this is my one and only contribution to this political thread.

Tony Benn got round having to kiss the queen`s hand by putting his own thumb in the way and kissing that.

Last night Jeremy said he didn`t realise that kissing the queen`s hand was part of the ceremony and he would have to think about it.

It makes me seethe how the press are pushing this.  The journalist last night was trying to push Jeremy into saying what he would do if it was part of the ceremony.  `But what will you do if it is?  Will you kiss the queen`s hand`.

What gets me is I`m sure the queen couldn`t give a damn if he did or he didn`t.  I bet she hates to see people having to bow and curtsy to her but has to go along with it for the sake of tradition.

It should be thought about!

An alternative that involves a president like Thomas Jefferson, a constitution and a bill of rights does actually bear thinking about.

A constitution that enshrines freedom of speech, protection against tyrannic governments/institutions, that values openness, honesty, fairness and accountability.

A constitution that can not be twisted, corrupted or hijacked.

The current system is privilege based and is completely unfair and MUST be replaced.

Fifty Shades of Beige: Corbyn slated for ‘jumble sale suits’ during PMQs

The new Labour leader seemed to have taken a leaf out of the sartorial book of Eighties Party boss Michael Foot attending his first ever Prime Minister’s Question Time in what can only be described as Oxfam-chic.

Corbyn looked less the razor-sharp politician ready to represent Britain on an international stage and instead seemed to be channelling the ‘homeless person given ill-fitting charity suit’ look.

You'd never get a future monarch sleeping around.

That would say it all.

Isn't it interesting how much attention Jeremy has attracted?

You'd think they'd be happy that someone apparently so un-electable was leader of the opposition.

He is the best thing to happen to politics for years.
If one of the other 3 tory lites had got in it would be more blandness.

He will be asking awkward questions and the tories don't like it.

They have had it to easy with there cohorts Nulabour
