Tanner sighting
Hi, i am new to this forum.. I have followed the Maddie case for years and one thing has always bothered me from the crime watch programme. So I hope someone could maybe shed some light on this ? Andy Redwood said they were certain they had eliminated the Tanner sighting as he was a holiday maker picking his daughter up from Ocean Club night crèche so why was he walking towards the Ocean club rather than away. Maybe he got lost and walked all the way around the block I would really like to know why.

Re: Tanner sighting
Hallo ,maise I find the whole new man carrying child thing ,rather odd, It took a lot of years to come up with this ,then as you hae said which way did he walk, then the pajamas he had kept the whole time was photographed and put up this site , the did not remotely resemble the ones that chilsd was supposed to be wearing the ones held up by the. Well parents on a programn ,was from marks and spencers ,new ones I think to show the type and colour So what good was there in his pj if not ones told were worn ,all maybe lies in one form or another . it just doesn't match the story. joyce1938

But still on the first page of the Find Madeleine website and when you click on it, this-despite the fact that the British police have ruled the sighting out-

Just about a month later Gerry gives this description:
McCanns defend tour around Europe [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
Last Updated: Wednesday, 6 June 2007, 12:22 GMT 13:22 UK
Suspicious timing.
Mr McCann, who turned 39 on Tuesday, gave a detailed description of a suspect seen carrying what was thought to be a child on the night Madeleine disappeared.
He said the man was approximately 35 years old, about 5ft 8in or 5ft 9in tall and had dark hair, which was parted at the side and slightly longer at the back.
He said the man was wearing a dark jacket slightly longer than a suit, beige trousers and dark shoes.
Asked if he thought the man had taken Madeleine, he said they were: "suspicious of the timing and that person needs to be eliminated from the investigation".
He also urged people to hand in any pictures taken around the time Madeleine vanished at Praia da Luz with strangers in the background.

Forgive me, but the McCann generated artwork above does not show a jacket longer than a suit and I'm more than envious of Ms Tanner's eyesight when she can spot which way the man's hair was parted from a considerable distance. Can we have the eye colour whilst we're at it?
Iirc TM put the height at 5'10" - but no matter.....

Re: Tanner sighting
I have read where a poster said that it was more or less dusk and tanner would be hardly able to make all that description ,from where she was standing, how the heck did she take it when a man had turned up saying it was him and he was taking his child. I try to consider what did she make of that when faced with it ? the mind boggles eh ?Then you hear very little after that ,did it just fit the story ? joyce1938

Not only a poster but also a OC worker (IIRC Sylvia Batista) said it would be impossible to see all that.
ETA I'll try to find it but my search efforts are not that successful most of the time.

Hi Maisie Sunshine
If this man took the route because he had got lost he would have had to turn back. With Jane, Gerry, Jes and possibly others in the area, why didn't anyone else see him?
Then again, Martin Smith and his family saw a man and a child of very similar description. Smith later claimed that the man he saw was Gerry McCann.
Redwood ruled out tanner man when he allegedly turned up 6 years later, presenting the clothes that he and the child were wearing that night yet the McCanns still portray him as the possible abductor on their website.
Gerry claims that he was at the tapas, Tanner saw him outside the apartment (but on his way back to the Tapas) and Smith says that Gerry was walking towards Kelly's bar carrying a child. The Tapas waiter says that Jane did not leave the table.
Jane identified her man as Murat, Smith says it was definitely not Murat.
Apart from writing it into the two timelines on Madeleine's sticker book cover, Jane tanner withheld details of her sighting for 24 hours. Smith, despite all the activity in the area, didn't report his sighting until Murat got taken in for questioning days later.
Confused? Good luck to anyone who can make sense of this

A British father considered the prime suspect in the Madeleine McCann kidnapping for six years blew open the case after coming forward to police with his child's distinctive frilly pyjamas.
The mystery man's involvement was ruled out after detectives realised he was taking his own two-year-old daughter home from a crèche and had not snatched Maddie.
He even agreed to be pictured in the clothes he wore in Praia da Luz, on May 3, 2007, to prove he was the man in the police sketch previously seen as key to cracking the case.
His two-year-old's pink pyjamas, which were described by one of the McCann's closest friends, were also brought to Scotland Yard to help prove his innocence.

'Revelation moment': Police revealed a major breakthrough when a British father came forward to reveal he was the man who for six years had been considered the prime suspect in the Madeleine McCann case

DCI Andy Redwood, the Met officer leading the investigation, described it as a 'revelation moment' and completely changed when they thought Madeleine was kidnapped.
The Metropolitan Police last night confirmed it had ruled out a sighting of the man previously seen near the McCanns’ Portuguese apartment.
Jane Tanner, a close friend of Kate and Gerry, previously told officers she saw a dark-haired man carrying away a child wearing pink floral pyjamas at 9.15pm on May 3, 2007.
One of the so-called ‘Tapas Seven’, Miss Tanner had been dining with the McCanns in a nearby restaurant when their daughter went missing.

All change: Jane Tanner, a close friend of Kate and Gerry, described a dark-haired man carrying away a child at 9.15pm on May 3, 2007, but this man came forward
But this has been found not to involve Madeleine.

Police probe: DCI Andy Redwood last night reveals that he was 'almost certain that the man seen by Jane Tanner is not Madeleine's abductor'
The revelation has shifted detectives’ focus on to a later sighting at 10pm when an Irish family reported seeing a man walking towards the beach carrying a blonde girl in pyjamas.
She appeared to be in an uncomfortable position with her head slumped against him.
DCI Redwood said: 'Our focus in terms of understanding what happened on the night of May 3 has now given us a shift of emphasis. We are almost certain that the man seen by Jane Tanner is not Madeleine's abductor.
'It takes us through to a position at 10pm when we see another man who is walking towards the ocean, close by to the apartment, with a young child in his arms.'
Today it was revealed the police may have made a major breakthrough in the hunt for Madeleine after more than 1,000 people came forward with fresh information and several named the same man as the prime suspect.
The three-year-old's disappearance was reconstructed in a dramatic BBC Crimewatch appeal last night and Scotland Yard has today hailed a 'truly unprecedented' response.
Detectives believe a suspect seen carrying a child 500 yards from the McCanns’ holiday apartment was the kidnapper who struck just before her mother went to check on her children.
NEW: Police explain why previous 'Maddie timeline' is WRONG
Timeline: A Crimewatch special last October revealed that police believe the prime suspect was a man seen carrying a child at around 10pm on May 3, 2007. The current dig is set to start on land very close to where he was seen
This means Kate McCann may have missed the abduction of her daughter by a matter of minutes on May 3, 2007.
Last night several tourists who were in Praia da Luz that night have come forward, and crucially two have named the same person.
- Mystery Briton even posed in clothes he wore that night to prove innocence
- DCI Redwood described his decision to come forward as 'revelation moment'
- He'd been seen carrying daughter by Jane Tanner, a friend of Gerry and Kate
- Little girl had distinctive frilly pyjamas that he also brought to Scotland Yard
- Turned investigation on its head and moved kidnapping from 9.15pm to 10pm
