Madeleine McCann: New mobile phone information could hold key to child's disappearance
MIRROR  December 31, 2013.   by Tom Pettifor

A new dossier of mobile phone calls is believed to contain numbers that have yet to be identified - and officers hope they could provide vital new leads

Detectives are examining mobile phone information they believe could hold the key to Madeleine McCann’s disappearance.

Portuguese authorities are thought to have provided Scotland Yard with a list of calls made in and around the Ocean Club in Praia de Luz between 9pm and 10pm on May 3 2007 – the night the three-year-old vanished.

The dossier is believed to contain phone numbers that have yet to be identified, and officers hope they could provide vital new leads.

Detectives hope to track down the registered owner of each phone, and check whether any are known sex offenders.

The information was sent to the Met in response to an “international letter of request” asking for assistance from foreign police forces in 31 countries.

The requests are believed to relate to unidentified mobile phone numbers and it is the first time they have been analysed in detail. The Met are preparing to send another letter of request soon, sources said.

Detectives and Crown Prosecution Service lawyers are believed to have prepared a string of ILORs but remain hopeful that a joint probe can be established, rendering them unnecessary.

If an arrangement cannot be reached then it is feared the British investigation could drag on for years and end up costing at least double the £5million already spent.

Portuguese police revealed in October that their investigation was being restarted as a result of new lines of inquiry emerging from their own internal review.

They had originally shelved their probe in 2008, the year after Madeleine vanished, but supported the British-run inquiry.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood, the officer spearheading the probe, revealed in October that the records could hold the key.

He said the analysis was a “targeted attack on that data to see whether it can assist us”.

He added: “We’ve got a data set of phone traffic. Within that phone traffic, you can see we’ve got some of those numbers we can attribute to people, but a large number of them we can’t ...

"A lot of the focus is not necessarily to find a suspect, but also witnesses. We’re trying to understand who was there for a range of reasons.”

Portuguese police have always had the phone records but they have never been examined in such detail.

The Met is now examining 41 persons of interest, including 15 UK nationals.

A Met police spokesman said: “We are not giving a running commentary. However we will issue details of any new ILOR issued to the Portuguese authorities.”

I don't see it Okeydokey (always seems I am disagreeing with you, its not personal  smilie ), the faces of the McCanns and indeed the silence from their camp says different. Also I doubt very much the PJ have re-opened the case if they cannot see an early conclusion. They have consistently dug their heels in about re-opening the case, stubbornly, some would say. It must have taken something significant for them to make that move, and Portugal have not re-pened the case to play games. SY simply don't have the option to drag it out - if they don't solve it, the PJ will.

The McCanns are fighting battles on a number of fronts and they seem to have very little support. I know the Sunday Times have printed an apology for the suppression story, but the damage is done. Crimewatch did them no favours whatsoever, the facebook group numbers went up in thousands, even their staunch supporters can find no excuse for McCanns suppressing the Smith family e-fits - they are not even in Kate's book! I felt a definite change of stance when they broadcast the CW update, and DCI Redwood looked very stern, focused and in no mood to listen to any more lies.

I'll bet a pound to a penny Scotland Yard won't/don't 'find' any calls made, between and from any of the T9's phones between 5pm-midnight on the 3rd May 2007, the night a three years old child went 'missing'!

These have got to be the pay as you go disposable phones given to the Mccann's shortly after the incident.
These phones also hold the answer to the question of "why were their phones not hacked by journalists"
This says to me that Scotland Yard have finally managed to drill down into the datadump of phone signals in the area that acquired a while back.
I look forward to them asking the 'why' questions as to the purpose of owning this mobiles. Also the 'who' questions as to the communications.

Hi Christobell - no offence taken ( big grin ).  That was pure speculation on my part in this case (as opposed to doing some research on that other thread with OTH).

Essentially I am "agnostic on Andy".  None of what he has said makes any sense but that could be because (a) he is really thick  (b) he is really intimidated or (c) he is "doing a Columbo".

We have to wonder whether this article is true. Where did the Mirror get this story from.
I agree with the 41 suspects because it interests me to hear who are the last 3 ones, added to the 38.
If the information in the article comes from the police, there must be a reason for it.
Maybe a way to announce something new.

I wish I could write as well and as to the point like Cristobel does. Her comment above is just perfect.

It's a pity they are not concentrating on calls made on the run up to the 3rd as there are a number of calls and texts which really should be taken into account but were not allowable by the Portuguese judge at the time (doesn't make sense if you can prove that they are relevant). All allegedly of course.

Would have thought the 6 Brit Cleaners in the white van were already off the list. 15 BRITS is a big number.

My theory is that a Judge can change a law and the case is too serious not to change this particular issue.
I think that the Judge made an exception.

If something happened to Madeleine earlier l wouldn't put it past Gerry to have got some cheap PAYG phones which they could have disposed of.

It's interesting that SY says 'phones that have yet to be identified' and they were used between 9-10pm. It must have been when Maddie was taken so mr.Smiths suspect must be the 'abductor'

Such a mobile might be the  item Gerry and Micael Wright were looking for amongst the rocks a few days later.
If it werethe case that I'd have nade a decoy trip down PDL and having to return to base, it would be quite reasonable - in view of the impending police presence - to ditch any such mobile.
Next question is:  are  those rocks on the way back to OC?  Because obviously one would not want to be seen going towards OC with a child, the way back would be via the rocks and the beach?
A mobile would be very necessary in order to coordinate the performance.

Redwood's comment that they are not looking for suspects but rather witnesses is interesting. Perhaps it suggests that they already have the suspects and are just looking for corroborating evidence from witnesses...

A fair observation. Couple this with Redwoods announcement that they Met are scrutinising phone data, and the discrepancies that exist between the calls and texts which were KNOWN AS FACT to have been made from independently supplied data from service providers and what phone traffic claimed and denied by the McCanns, the witnesses sought could be the recipients and callers to and from the McCanns and the Tapas Mob, when reorder antenna pings placed certain persons in locations contrary to where they said they were.

Surely, this 'news' article is just a re-hash of what appeared at the beginning of October??

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-24386130

IMO, just CM's handiwork, trying to imply there are still lots of other suspects out there, even though Bundleman has now been eliminated/ridiculed and the focus moved to the Smith sighting.

Wouldn't be at all surprised if Tractor-man didn't appear in another re-hashed story or some other dead person they've discovered had a phone - perhaps it's the turn of ET next??

Indeed. The Mirror has, yet again, regurgitated something copied and pasted and then embellished, from the Mail in October
The Mail are looking into it in relation to the previous story.

Dear Mr Mac,
Thank you for your email. We are grateful to you for drawing the below to our attention and we are currently looking into the circumstances surrounding this matter.
