Correio da Manha spells it out, 11.5.2014 - DCI Redwood was only showing off

Post by Tony Bennett on 11.05.14 19:39

Corrieo da Manha editorial today:

QUOTE

"Poor Maddie. A British police chief who just wants to be on TV uses Maddie's parents' claims to show off - and comes to Portugal to meddle in the Portuguese investigation. To show off, on TV, they 'investigate' idiotic leads, for the English to see - i.e. just for the sake of appearances - and they even do 'aerial searches' (!!!) seven years after the child disappeared. An embarrassment to him and to the Portuguese state".

Re: Correio da Manha spells it out, 11.5.2014 - DCI Redwood was only showing off

Post by Watching on 11.05.14 20:00

·         theguardian.com, Wednesday 25 April 2012 11.15 BST

He (Redwood)  said the team was developing new information about what happened to Madeleine five years ago, when she disappeared from her parents' holiday villa in Praia de Luz.

"We are currently developing material which we believe represents genuine new information," said Redwood.

He said officers had carried out a forensic analysis of the timeline of events, and had identified opportunities when the child could have been taken in a criminal act.

Dismissing conspiracy theories about Madeleine's parents' involvement, Redwood said he believed the girl's disappearance was the result of
"a criminal act by a stranger".

He's developing material which he believes represents genuine new information?   I know how I'm voting!

That report was over 2 years ago.

Redwood is a clever man.

But then clever men may also be very wicked.

On the one hand he is developing new information.

But then, NO, he is developing new material which represents new information.

Advanced stuff, this.

Most police offiicers would simply say they are following up a number of promising leads.

But then Redwood is a cut above other police officers.

He doesn't start from scratch, or from square one, or with a blank sheet of paper.

Oh no!

Redwood is much mores subtle and 'nuanced' than that.

He draws everything back to zero.

Nor does he speak of drawing conclusions.

No.

In Redwood-speak, 'things may not follow with our thinking'.

His boss, Martin Hewitt, speaks the same way.

The pace of the investigation isn't quickening.

Hewitt says: 'The tempo is moving forwards'!

A tempo hasn't 'moved forwards' ever since the word was invented.

But, to quote Kenneth Wolstenhome, it has now.

Who writes their scripts?

The Portuguese do seem to be getting bolder. Initially they were quiet, then we had a few off-the-record briefings. Then a warning to SY to get to work and stop leaking to the papers. And now it's open derision! Karma perhaps?

Had enough of this crap I'm out of here!
Embarrassing the whole of Britain.

First their statements that didn't make sense they ignore.
Then the British sniffer dogs are also ignored.
Kate's book doesn't make sense.
Leads that dont make sense.
Silly newspaper stories.
Now SY making fools of themselves.

Yes, Bishop, I thnk that's very much a correct analysis.

When Grange began, the Portuguese sort of played along with it for appearances' sake.

They were willing to meet Redwood and his near-to-retirement colleagues on their 27 trips to the Algarve.

They even put up people from their equivalent of our Crown Prosecution Service to meet two top lawyers from our Director of Public Prosecutions' Office - though goodness knows what all that was about. The most senior lawyer who went to Portugal, anyway, was Alison Saunders, who covered up what really happened at Hillsborough by refusing a second Inquest for the Hillsborough victims' relatives - when she worked as a top lawyer in the Attorney-General's office.

But as she was brought in by the Grange investigation co-ordinator, Hamish Campbell, the man who deliberately or otherwise wrongly prosecuted Barry Bulsara/George, nothing should surprise us.

They obligingly re-opened their investigation.

They watched as Redwood bragged about 'increasing co-operation'.

They suffered in silence as, time after time, the arrogant members of Grange and the British press accused them of incompetence, or moving too slowly, of holding up their ILORs, or 'not working the way we do' etc.

They looked on in amazement as Grange and the British media spoke of 3 burglars, 6 men in a white van, a soothing couple, Tractorman, Crecheman, Smithman, two different e-fits of what was supposed to be the same man, four blond men they were keen to interview, tens of thousands of mobile 'phones to examine, 500-plus sex offenders to trace, hundreds of actions and lines of enquiry to pursue, lists of suspects they needed to 'eliminate from their enquiries' before they could get to the truth, and all the rest of the piffle coming out of Grange and the British tabloids.

They no doubt noted the expensive BBC CrimeWatch 'McCann Special', with its 6.7 million audience, which carried what was purported to be an accurate reconstruction of events, featuring, inter alia, the 'Last Photo' - but not stopping to explain why it took three weeks to produce from a camera they had with them when they reported Madeleine's disappearance.

They have borne all this with the greatest of patience, but, like a pressure cooker, having to endlessly endure such unadulterated rubbish day after day, month after month, year after year, it can't have been easy. The pressure builds up, and must eventually be released.

As their irritation and anger mounted, there were many correct reports in the British press of what amounted to little short of open warfare between the two expensive teams of detectives.

It only needed a 'tipping point' - a sort of straw that broke the camel's back.

That came amidst a clicking of photographers, as the Grange suits and accompanying black cases and bundles of documents paraded themselves last week in front of ExclusivePix around Praia da Luz. Patience finally snapped as they saw the British press taking seriously the farcical trip of the Met men in an Alouette Mark III military helicopter, presuming to find something to see from the air seven years after the event.

Grange had meticulously arranged this event, months ago, to coincide with the days around the 7th anniversary of Madeleine's reported disappearance.

There was a bubble of excitement in the British press, with frenetic talk of digs, of ground-penetrating radar equipment, of finding bodies, clothes and 'equipment' etc.

It was one 'performance' too far for the Portuguese.

The pressure cooker has burst open - and so has Redwood's bubble.

They have correctly called out the best of the Met.

Rather like the child in the Hans Christian Anderson story who pointed out that the Emperor had no clothes, Correio da Manha has shown up this long-running, expensive, £8 million-and-rising farce by pointing out the absurdity of a helicopter search after 7 years, and the fact that should be staring us all in the face, namely that our taxpayers' money is being abused and frittered away on a complete charade, orchestrated by the former Chief Executive Officer of Rupert Murdoch's News International empire, Rebekah Brooks, and using what was once a respected police force.

Karma?

Maybe not.

But it's perhaps poetic justice that at the very moment when Brooks is mid-way through a criminal trial, a leading Portuguese newspaper has boldly exposed this sham Metropolitan Police investigation for what it really is.

Bogus.

ETA - IMPORTANT:

Jeanmonroe has just posted the transcript of an interview on Portuguese TV, provided to us by Joana Morais, here it is:

++++++++++++++

PortugueseTV broadcast by CMTV: The Maddie Police Show Off

11 May 2014

(Due acknowledgement to Joana Morais for bringing us this news and also, I think, for the translation)

Eduardo Cintra Torres on DCI Andy Redwood's latest media performances in the Algarve

Eduardo Cintra Torres makes a weekly commentary on CMTV about TV and media and writes in the Correio da Manhã newspaper.

Transcript

Eduardo Cintra Torres [ECT] - That gentleman from Scotland Yard, that appears there [in the video inset, they show a picture of Redwood; they are debating Redwood's visit to the Algarve] - it's actually a pity that we don't have a psychologist here to make his profile, not of Maddie's abductor or of the ‘assassins’, but of that Scotland Yard gentleman. I look at him and I just think: 'This man just wants to appear on TV'.

With so many disappearances of children in England... did he choose the Maddie case because he would appear on TV?

And they’ve gone beyond that, now they've come to Portugal to investigate.

Why are the Portuguese police being subservient to this mockery, to this televised show-off? We had aerial searches in Lagos seven years later!

Aerial searches! We need to ask, what exactly is going on?!  This is just the extreme ridiculous thing, a show-off, a performance, something produced just to appear on the TV cameras.

And then they're going to open up holes, searching for, eventually, the child's body at the 25th of April street?

Was it for this that we had the 25th of April [the Portuguese ‘Carnation Revolution, celebrating liberty]?

João Ferreira (CMTV news anchor) [JF] – Do you mean that the opening of the case by the British authorities was done taking into account the media coverage?

ECT - Absolutely, that police officer from the Scotland Yard in particular just pursues that [i.e. media coverage].

I believe that is a shame for the Portuguese state to allow the mediatiaation of an investigation that belongs to the Portuguese and not to the English.

If we tried to do the same in England, would they allow it? Obviously not.

JF - They were authorised by the Attorney General's Office...

ECT - Of course, it's the old [Portuguese-British] alliance issue.

JF - Thank you, Eduardo.

But those endless 'new clues!,,,' and  headlines are very useful.

They  make the tabloid readers think that they are working hard and getting closer all the time.

They keep the likes of  us busy reacting instead of  presenting the hard evidence and so  spreading the word.

That's why I keep pulling up old topics from years back and finding only more FACTS - so much hard work done by so many!

That's why they send us trolls to start some in-fighting. To keep us busy with harmless chatter.

Seeing a discussion on the latest idiotic headlines run to 60+ pages in no time at all. Is exactly their purpose. Sorry, don't often go into the red but this gets me every time. Dive into the files and see the work already done.

I totally agree 100% with Tony's post . its reasoning and conclusion .

To add, i personally feel the "straw that broke the camels back "was SY request to interview the three " suspects " searching there apartments / homes  and Portugal's refusal to allow this request .

This arrogance, was the tipping point .

Looking at the Exclusive pix [ papped !! ] shot , of SY finest ,you could not cast a more obnoxious looking bunch if you tried, dark glasses , large brief cases ,[ to give the appearance of IMPORTANCE, holding more documents than if feasibly required , ] again for show ,rounded off with  *{ Lord Charles ] at the helm.

There flat refusal to Go back to zero , when every case ever solved since history began ,is resolved this way, the first thing ANY force would do is ,start from May 3rd,and work FORWARD ,by virtue of the opposite applying , that is why i have no trust in SY .

Sentiments OPENLY now shared by the PJ .

In a nutshell SSO. I am continually taken aback by posters who even after 3 years of this try to assert that Redwood is some sort of strategic genius. Absolutely nothing he has ever done has ever suggested that he is anything other than a deluded buffoon who is completely out of his depth. To think that this is how we are being portrayed around the world is a deep embarrassment.

Fully agreed.

Is this Lord Charles, a.k.a. Andy Redwood, unveiling the abductor?

The only slight sympathy I have for Redwood is that this case is probably the ultimate poisoned chalice of all time - the poisonest chalice, if you will. Look how baffled we all are, for a start.

Drawing everything back to zero? Do me a favour! Where is zero, in this case? 3rd May 2007? 28th April? Donegal at Easter? Her birth? Her conception? The moment Gerry and Kate met? Their births? I have my own ideas on when Maddie's fate was sealed but I won't bother saying just to save wear and tear on the moderator's delete key.

......

Did that actually happen though? Like most of what SY is said to be doing, it came from the dreaded 'source close to the McCanns' or 'friend of the McCanns'

"
8:28AM GMT 13 Jan 2014

Scotland Yard detectives investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann want to interview three burglars who were in the area when she went missing, it has been reported.
British officers formally asked Portugal for more help with their inquiry in a move which appears to suggest that fresh suspects or promising new lines have been identified, but police refused to give any details about the nature of the assistance being sought.
However, a spokesman for Kate and Gerry McCann, Madeleine’s parents, told the Daily Mirror he believed it was likely the burglars were the targets."

The only reason I have a vague hope SY are actually working to a sensible conclusion is because of what they haven't said.

Do  not have the video aquila but the whole raison d'etre put forward for SY's involvement was to carry out a through and detailed review of everything in the files of both PJ and PI's and to look for that elusive piece of information that either might have missed and which could provide the key to unlocking the case. After 3 years with 30+ officers and at a cost of £10m+ is there even the hint of having found something that wasn't there before which is going to wrap the case up?

As Pat Brown constantly reminds us, this is becoming an all time classic model of how not to conduct an investigation - start with the conclusion and try to find evidence to fit rather than start with evidence and try to move towards a conclusion.

I'd love to know if he was told the "real" remit from the off, or if he gets gravel voiced phone calls in the middle of the night, warning him off particular lines of inquiry.

Possibly.  I would like to believe SY are tolerating all the Mc-Spin stories so that they can just get on with things in the background, the PJ have also been plodding along getting on with whatever they're doing. There was a judicial secrecy order on why they re-opened the case, all they said was that it was 'new evidence'. SY whilst not totally dismissing the ideas of burglars or smelly men outright  have always said that those are 'lines of enquiry'....ie not the only one.

Quote : "They looked on in amazement as Grange and the British media spoke of 3 burglars, 6 men in a white van, a soothing couple, Tractorman, Crecheman, Smithman, two different e-fits of what was supposed to be the same man, four blond men they were keen to interview, tens of thousands of mobile 'phones to examine, 500-plus sex offenders to trace, hundreds of actions and lines of enquiry to pursue, lists of suspects they needed to 'eliminate from their enquiries' before they could get to the truth, and all the rest of the piffle coming out of Grange and the British tabloids."

Apparently, in The Sun today, they're saying Mr Woodhouse was questioned for 2 hours by police in jail (he had  been hiding in portugal, after attacking a girl) had a cleaning business there. They've found him!

I tend to think that if this was a real investigation and I was at the centre of it - i.e. I was Madeleine's mum or dad, there would be no way on this earth that I would be allowing my government-appointed spokescreature to put false stories in to the media nor would I be blatantly lying on TV sofa's knowing that the police would be scrutinizing my every word and movement.

So, to my mind that can only mean two things:

1. The McCanns are truly innocent and Madeleine really was abducted and are safe in the knowledge that the stories they tell are true.

or

2. The investigation is a sham and the McCann's know it and are safe in the knowledge that they can pervert the course of justice for their own daughter with the blessing of our police force and government.

Because I believe in the dogs, I tend to believe number 2 is the real reason that the police are 'tolerating the McSpin'. In my opinion they are not getting on with things in the background - NSY and the McCanns are very much a team, working together for the common cause to DENY justice for Madeleine McCann.

My personal feeling is that the McCanns are not completely in cahoots with SY - no doubt they have inside contacts who have assured them that everything is ok and the police are looking for an stranger abductor but I suspect that the whole thing makes them a little uneasy.  They have never liked the idea of the police looking for bodies in Portugal - in fact in the early days they did everything they could to divert attention elsewhere.  This was the first thing that made me think they might not be completely in the dark about Maddie's real whereabouts ...
