Ben Needham's grandfather calls for Government help
An MP is backing calls for the case of missing Ben Needham to get the same support as that given to the family of Madeleine McCann.
Labour's Angela Smith says she will ask the Government to help the Sheffield family in the same way that they have backed Kate and Gerry McCann , whose daughter went missing in Portugal six years ago.
Ben's grandfather has told Calendar that they've been "forgotten," and ignored by successive Governments after the toddler went missing in 1991 on Kos.
This week a TV reconstruction of Madeleine's disappearance was shown, following a two-year, five million pound investigation by the Metropolitan Police. Mark Witty reports

Re: Ben Needham's grandfather calls for Government help
I can't for a moment see this happening but it will be interesting to see if the government attempts to explain why one missing child is treated so differently to all the others.

I know where the blame is often directed. By those who remember.
If the internet had existed in the 90s, I'm sure theories other than "gypsy abduction" would have been developed and substantiated to a greater extent than was possible then and which, due to the passage of time, is probably not possible now.

Re: Ben Needham's grandfather calls for Government help
I think a very good gesture from Mr. & Mrs. would be to offer some of the money still in the Fund to help the Needham family.
the SY are doing a very great deal of work to find out what happened to Maddie. If after all that effort their work is unsuccessful, why would the fund be needed - if SY do not find out what happened I do not believe any other PI firm would?
Of course if they put a stamp on a letter to Portugal then they would not need the Fund money as the case would be re-opened. Mr. A. does seem to know the law of his own land.

Nothing will happen unless they have 100,000 people signing the e-petion. Why is there no reporting of this in the MSM giving the e-petion link?plebgate wrote:Well done Ben's family and the MP.

THE grandfather of a toddler who went missing on a Greek holiday island 21 years ago has accused the Government of ignoring the case and said he feels it deserves as much support as the investigation into Madeleine McCann’s disappearance.
Ben Needham was 21-months-old when he was last seen near the farmhouse where he was staying on Kos in 1991.
His grandfather Eddie said that while the case of Madeleine was subject to a multi-million pound investigation by the Metropolitan Police more than six years after she disappeared in Portugal, he feels his family has been let down.
He told ITV’s Calendar: “Ben has been ignored for too long by the British Government, and previous governments.
“Madeleine deserves every help and every assistance that she can get to bring her home safely, don’t get me wrong, I’m not against that, but I do believe that what’s good for one is good for the other and all the other people that’s missing.
“They’ve been given every assistance that’s possible, financially and legally, whereas we’ve never been able to afford a solicitor.”
Mr Needham said he wanted a team of officers at South Yorkshire Police to be dedicated to Ben’s case.
For the two cases to be treated totally different in my opinion is wrong,” he added.
“Is is another case of the north/south divide?”
The family is urging people to sign an e-petition which needs 100,000 responses for the Government to consider whether the matter should be debated in Parliament.
The case is supported by Angela Smith, Labour MP for the Sheffield-area constituency of Penistone and Stockbridge.
A year ago, a team of British and Greek police and other experts spent two weeks searching an area of land close to the farmhouse where Ben was last seen but no trace of the toddler was found.
His mother Kerry has previously said she believes her son was was abducted to be sold through legal adoption.
The youngster vanished after travelling to Kos with his mother and grandparents Eddie and Christine, who were renovating a farmhouse in the village of Iraklise.
Over the years there have been a number of possible sightings and a range of theories about what happened to him.

Labour's Angela Smith urges the prime minister to give more resources to help find Ben Needham, who went missing in 1991. He says police are independent but he will look into it.
She had written a letter to PM asking for the same support and resources afforded to the McCanns. obviously she hadn't had a reply!
If Angela Smith hadn't asked the question, would Cameron have answered her letter ?

I watched PMQ's and good for Angela Smith for putting Cameron on the spot. Why shouldn't they have the same help as the McCanns.

Re: Ben Needham's grandfather calls for Government help
Yes I too felt she had put him on the spot. I was amazed when he said "police are independent but he will look into it" The police weren't independent regarding the McCanns, they had high powered official help from the word go. Ben Needham's family never had that.rainbow1 wrote:I watched PMQ's and good for Angela Smith for putting Cameron on the spot. Why shouldn't they have the same help as the McCanns.
MP calls for Government cash to help find missing Ben
Kerry Needham's MP has today questioned the Prime Minister over financial backing for the search for Kerry's son Ben, who disappeared from Kos 22 years ago.
Angela Smith, the Labour MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge, asked David Cameron at Prime Minister's Questions, why Ben's case is not getting the same Government support as the search for Madeleine McCann and urged him to sanction funds to help find Ben.
