Donations website reassures over use of funds
[snipped]
A shortfall of at least £250,000 was found in the funds that the website should have passed on to charities.
The trustees have not filed any accounts since the year ending 5 April 2009 and the Commission has serious concerns about mismanagement in the administration of the charity by the trustees in relation to the operation of the online donations portal and risk to charity funds," the Charity Commission noted on Friday when it suspended the organisation's website.

Sorry If I am missing something here, but what connection does this have to the MM case?candyfloss wrote:CharityGiving website suspended - charity regulator acts to protect public donations

Re: CHARITY GIVING SUSPENDED
This is a 'rival' charity to justgiving. I hope they are both audited immediately.

It's a news topic. You'll have to work out if the relevance to funds, limited companies, charities, loads of public money etc is relevant.

Re: CHARITY GIVING SUSPENDED
I don't think that there can be any doubt that the McCanns chose not to go for charity status because they would then have been subject to more rigorous checks.

That only makes me wonder what sort of conversations went on in those first few days when Madeleine went missing, it must have been about what they could spend the money on that was pouring in don't you think?
Remember one of - or the very first - payment to be spent was their mortgage payment!

A charity can only be set up to benefit many people, not just one. If it had been for all missing children, not just Madeleine, it would have been allowed, I believe.

The Charity Commission was in fact willing to 'build around' the McCanns' wishes and as they have added the intention to use the money for other missing children eventually - it was perfectly suitable for a charity. The Charity Commission did in fact release a statement about it.
Imo they never wanted a charity as it would not be able to sustain the family financially and they would be obliged to publish detailed and transparent accounts. Which were promised anyway but we're still waiting. Or we may have misinterpreted the meaning of 'transparent'.
Instead they managed to get the word 'Fund' included in the title - Companies House has a list of 'sensitive' words that are not allowed in the name of a company, special permission is needed for the use of sensitive words. In record time they overcame all these hurdles to create their Ltd. Co. Or rather one of their sets of lawyers did. The second or the third lot that came down. Bell Pottinger for reputation management, IFLG for goodness knows what and Braithwaite something for the Ltd. Co. I believe.

There's more information in the accountant's report into the fund about the whys and wherefores of charitable status.

Thank you for posting this link. It's always worth re-reading. For new members of the forum it's a definite must-read imo.

Now that the SY team are on the case using millions of taxpayers' money, IMO this is an ideal time to give the money for other missing children.
I would rather see this in the headlines than Mr. doing a triathlon. What with his NHS work, Hacked Off campaign, two children and a wife, when does he get the time to do the training for such an event?
