That will be a bitter pill for TM seeing as how the film rights which reputedly netted them over one million pounds and was discussed as early as january 2008.

January 2008 McCannfiles.com:

Madeleine: The Movie
It is reported that Kate and Gerry McCann are in talks to turn the story of their missing daughter Madeleine into a movie. They are negotiating with one of the world’s largest talent and entertainment agencies, IMG, over the film in a deal which could be worth millions. The couple are also considering a book deal and selling interviews to television broadcasters with all proceeds going to the Madeleine Fund, the body set up to finance the search for the girl.

There's also a link to the BBC below, which doesn't work here, hopefully it does in the UK.

According to tweets, this article has been whooshed already. Oh well, can't pull it from the paper edition can they.

There was also talk on twitter that a film was being made (Debbie Butler I think, said she went to Portugal for filming IIRC), and it was going to be true to the files.

Oh dear somthing seems to have hit a raw nerve.

The Epxress are allowing comments, this is the first one:

BankruptBritain7:31am on Sunday, 14th July 2013Report This Comment As I posted on the comments pages of newspapers years ago, that this case would result in Books, Films and a massive financial gain for the McC_nns. Also continual publicity for them for over 6 years.

Even David Cameron has jumped on this PUBLICITY BANDWAGON, , trying to cash in and get himself and this defunct Coalition Government some badly needed positive PUBLICITY, he has even committed our Police to send as much Officers as they think necessary to investigate this case, and spend as much money as necessary investigating this case, As the Metropolitan Police are also seeking some positive publicity, as confidence in them like this Coalition Government is at ROCK BOTTOM, and the only was now is up.

This was a case of CHILD NEGLECT BY THE McC_nns, they left three children in an unsecure room in a foreign country without a babysitter or some responsible adult looking after them, most people would not leave a Dog like that. This was nothing but CHILD NEGLECT. This is a crime

If the above is anything to go by, will they stop the comments?

Outrageous indeed to suggest parallels. In the film the girl is abducted.

What happened? Did the deal not come off in January 2008? Which seemed indecently soon if you think your daughter is alive and probably being held captive by a paedophile?
8 months after she disappeared. splat

Kate and Gerry 'plan £2m film deal' [/b]as Madeleine Fund dwindles Daily Mail
By VANESSA ALLEN
Last updated at 09:06 09 January 2008

Extract (Third re-write of this article and the current online version):

Mr Mitchell said a book deal was also being considered "at some point down the line". He confirmed reports that one of the directors of the fund, former GMTV presenter Esther McVey, had resigned from the board, but denied it was because of any rift with the McCanns.

He said she wanted to concentrate on her role as a Conservative parliamentary candidate and was also about to start studying for a demanding MBA qualification.

(The first version of this article, which appeared on 08 January 2008, was very brief and simply said:
The film project will be discussed at a meeting of the fund's directors, including Gerry, tomorrow night at the McCanns' home in Rothley, Leicestershire...)

The meeting tomorrow follows the resignation of key board members, including the fund's spokeswoman Esther McVey.

The second version, later that day of 08 January 2008, contained more information and a quote from Clarence Mitchell. This was later removed and rewritten into the article that now appears online, as above. But why were this section and Mr Mitchell's quote removed?:

I am not surprised that they are outraged.
If the scenario is as stated there is now no way in which they could make a film about Madeleine.  It's now been done, and no producer would put up the money.

In any event the important bit of the film would last only 1 minute and 20 seconds, so there would be little point. What in England we used to call a "short"

( Good to see that the abductor is the ultimate "Swarthy" character. I don't think you can get more "swarthy" than that !
And the blanket is the right colour, and even cuddle-cat does not look like a teddy bear from that angle. Have they really gone for a cat ?)

Edited to add
Yes it's a cat / lioncub

One huge difference is, obviously, that the father has 72 hours to find the child, and sets about doing it.
No planning of the 100 day 'anniversary,' or parties with balloons.
But then there is this.

Talks in progress to make Madeleine McCann film

guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 8 January 2008 14.31 GMT

Representatives of Madeleine McCann's family have spoken to an entertainment and media company about turning the story of her disappearance into a film.
Clarence Mitchell, the spokesman for Gerry and Kate McCann, said the meeting with IMG before Christmas was positive, but that no deal had yet been signed.

Talks on a lucrative film deal were held amid concern the £1.2m fund dedicated to finding the four-year-old, who vanished in Portugal last May, is rapidly running out.

The family have hired a Spanish private detective agency on a £50,000 monthly retainer, and a widespread advertising campaign is adding to the bill.

"We have had a preliminary meeting with some producers and directors from IMG with a view to discussing an idea for a film. We've not agreed anything, we're not about to sign anything," Mitchell said. "We like the proposal, we thought it was fair, but there are others."

The board of Madeleine's Fund is due to meet this week and will discuss the proposal. Mitchell said the film may have a "cinema feel", and would be key part of replenishing Madeleine's Fund.

"If in theory a large film were to be made our lawyers would make sure our commercial interests are protected," he said. "Madeleine's Fund is just over £1m. The money is going on investigators and advertising. It's dwindling. The money is going. I would imagine we've got a few months left. It's not going to last the year unless we get more money in."

In addition to a film deal, Mitchell said it was a book deal was possible "at some point down the line", as part of efforts to find Madeleine.

Mitchell said he was still being inundated with offers for interviews with the McCanns, but added: "They cannot get involved in anything personally until their status [as suspects under Portuguese law] is lifted

Madeleine has always been a meal ticket to them, has parents they absolutly disgust me all they see is £££££££££££££££££
I believe they would they have gone ahead with there version of events if the PJ files hadn't been released

A comment will hinder the search for Madeleine - yeah right - pot calling the Kettle black :

A QUESTION SHE DID ANSWER
Q.  Are you aware that in not answering the questions you are jeopardising the investigation, which seeks to discover what happened to your daughter?
A.  ’Yes, if that’s what the investigation thinks.’

The page Candyfloss linked to does not bring up the article for me.

Will comment on the "this could harm the search for Maddie" quote from a friend which was posted in this thread.

Who will they sue if this "could harm the search for Maddie"? As the SY team are now searching for Maddie I wonder if they are of the same opinion?

"But people who see the film will find difficulty relating the fictional character Matt Hollis to Gerry McCann, who has won admiration for his dignified determination to find his daughter.
In the film, Hollis takes murderous revenge against those involved in the abduction."

Fictional character
Looks for his daughter
Mother is in the apartment looking after her daughter when the incident happens
She is injured trying to defend her daughter
Takes murderous revenge against those involved in the abduction

Real Character
Does not look for daughter
Mother is in the bar not looking after her daughter when the incident happens
She is injured trying to defend her reputation
Takes murderous revenge against those involved in investigating the abduction

Thank you Candyfloss.

Snipped from the article:

"But people who see the film will find difficulty relating the fictional character Matt Hollis to Gerry McCann, who has won admiration for his dignified determination to find his daughter."

I seem to remember that he did win some admiration from the police when some of them gave him a standing ovation after his little girl disappeared having been left alone with her two siblings in an apartment in a foreign land.
