A paedophile who avoided jail because was worried his family would be affected if he went to prison is having his sentence reviewed.

Gary Karn escaped with just a suspended sentence after being convicted of sexually abusing two little girls as they picked fruit at his allotment.

But following public outrage at the case, the Attorney General is now considering whether to launch an appeal against the sentence.

The 48-year-old father of three inappropriately touched his victims, aged seven and eight, after inviting them into his greenhouse to help themselves  to raspberries.

He was found guilty of three counts of sexual assault against a child at Norwich Crown Court earlier this week.

Judge Mark Lucraft imposed an 18-month suspended sentence, saying a jail term would unfairly affect his family as he would probably lose his job in a food processing factory.

‘I have to consider the impact on them - people who are not in any way at fault yet might suffer serious hardship from your actions,’ he said.

But the father of one of his victims said: ‘He talks about the effect on the offender’s family, but what about the effects on my family?'

It was revealed today that a member of public has asked the Attorney General's Office to review whether the sentence might have been 'unduly lenient'.

The office is considering the case, and must decide whether to refer the sentencing to the Court of Appeal by May 22.

Trial: After considering the mitigation in the case, Judge Mark Lucraft (left) agreed Gary Karn (right) should not go to prison

The court heard Karn invited the girls on to his allotment. He told them that he needed to brush spiders off them then put his hands up the top of one girl, and down the trousers of the other.

He was also charged with six counts of possession of extreme pornography and one count of possession of indecent photographs of a child.

Mr Lucraft decided not to proceed with these offences but took them into consideration.

Jude Durr, defending, had told the judge: ‘Imprisonment will almost certainly lead to him losing his job.

'If he loses his liberty and they lose their house, that would have pretty devastating consequences on the family circumstances.’

The decision outraged the victims’ families, who said the girls have been left traumatised from both the incident and the ordeal of having to give evidence in court.

The father of the eight-year-old added: ‘I find it all very disgusting. The judge has been too lenient.’

He told how the two girls were playing on his allotment last September when Karn invited them to pick vegetables and fruit on his plot.

The next morning the mother of one the girls overheard the pair saying they ‘didn’t want to talk to the man down the allotment’ again.

The girls then told what had happened after breaking down in tears when preparing a salad using vegetables from Karn’s allotment.

The father continued: ‘I feel totally let down. The judge lives in cloud cuckoo land.

‘It has caused arguments between me and my wife – it happened on my watch. It has caused a lot of anguish and grief.’

He added: ‘I told my daughter that she wouldn’t have to see that man ever again and it is all over and done with and now he is going to be walking around – how do you explain that to an eight-year-old? It will just confuse her.

‘We have put her through this –and ourselves – and for what? If I had known the outcome I would not have bothered.’

Talking about how it has affected his daughter, the father said: ‘There are noticeable little differences. She won’t stay upstairs in bed any more if her mum gets up and she carries her teddy everywhere as a comfort toy.

‘What scares me is that I am one of those parents who encourages my children to talk to people and acknowledge them when they are spoken to. The allotment is the last place I would have expected this to happen.’

Mr Lucraft suspended Karn’s sentence for two years and banned him from working with children for five years.

He was also ordered to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work and was given a five-year sexual offences prevention order.

I wonder if Judge Mark Lucraft would feel different if it was his child or grandchild because I would want to make sure that Gary Karn could not get close to children again . Sorry but I am fed up with the way they seem to acre about Paedophiles more than the victims and all the Saville business has proved that the victims never truly get over the abuse .

SCUMBAG. Should have thought about the effect on his family BEFORE he sexually assaulted children. Vermin like him don't deserve to live, let alone be entitled to a family life. I hope he rots. His family should NOT be taken into consideration.

I don't read the Daily Fail, this story was pointed out to me by a close member of the family who works on the same site (NOT the same factory) in Norwich.
Message to 'Sam' and all the other 'Sam's' out there: YES, he DID keep his job! My BIL says his factory mates are furious they have to share a site with this bloke, who walks around like cock of the walk with a smirk on his face. I've been told the atmosphere is venomous, and night shifts particularly bad.

What I don't understand is, surely his family are in more danger, and more likely to be affected now than if he were where he should be (behind a prison door).
WHY are so many Judges so lenient on paedophiles??? I could say what I think but that could be libellous (and I'm sure you all catch my drift)

Sickens me to think I live within 20 mins drive of this vermin :'(

I don't think it's libellous to express an opinion that in general terms those who are like-minded look out for each other.

Here’s another case that should be reviewed. Bob Bellow, gymnastics coach and serial paedophile recently escaped a prison sentence. Believe it or not, the judge was concerned about Bellow’s loss of standing in the community and the strain he’d endured. Something is definitely rotten in the justice system.

Mail

An internationally renowned gymnastics coach who sexually abused seven girls as young as six over a 40-year period has walked free from court.

Bob Bellew, 66, has published books on gymnastics, taught at schools across the UK and was a former Community Coach of the Year.

He also served on committees planning the 2012 Olympics and was chief coach of the Tower Hamlets Schools gym and dance display team.

Bellew was also awarded the 'Order of the Smile', a UN-recognised citation for adults 'distinguished in their love, care and aid of children'.

But he admitted a string of sexual abuse charges, spanning 40 years, against girls he was tutoring.

He was today spared jail at Snaresbrook Crown Court by a judge who said he had demonstrated 'genuine remorse'.

His outraged victims slammed the justice system in a statement after the pervert was handed a suspended sentence.

Judge Joanna Korner handed Bellew a 15-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and banned him from working with children.

She said: 'These were not specimens of a course of conduct, but actually single offences which you engaged against these girls.

'It does seem to me that this is a case where the punishment has in effect already begun, in the effect this had on you, for the loss of your standing and the strain of waiting to find out what would happen.

'Accordingly, I have come to the conclusion that this is one of the cases where punishment may be tempered with mercy.'

After denying the claims for months, Bellew suddenly came clean, pleading guilty to eight of 17 charges just two weeks before he was due to stand trial.

An old clip from Ben Elton's Man From Auntie show.

Sadly as topical now as it was in the early 1990s.

I couldn't believe what I was reading, how will any of the up and coming trials of celebrities or any others be treated by the Judicery, what do you think?

I can't remember where I read this, forgot to get the link.

"Why did Ken Clarke, as justice minister, halve sentences of paedophiles last year in a controversial announcement?
