Press regulation talks 'break down' **UPDATE** Deal now done

Post by sallypelt on 14.03.13 13:34

Cameron is now taking it to the Commons. I would advice ALL people to write to their own MP expressing their concerns about press regulations. Don't let the likes of those who have something to hide, get what they want

Very interesting Daily Politics show today.

Link to bbc iplayer: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01rbkb7/Daily_Politics_14_03_2013/

Starting at 4.54 for those with time to watch all of the bit on the free press argument - particularly interesting for me was Lilley's views from 14.40-16.22.

Hear, Hear, Mr. Lilley.

A petition AGAINST state control of our press

Post by Tony Bennett on 14.03.13 22:45

There won't be a better time than NOW to sign my petition which is:

AGAINST state control of our press
AGAINST Leveson's so-called 'statutory underpinning of the press' (= state control) and
FOR implementing Cameron's proposal of an independent regulatory body governed by a Royal Charter.

Here's the link again:

http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/42582

It's easy to sign.

Please sign it now (1,368 sigs already)...

...and please pass on the link to others.

Sorry if I'm being dumb here, but is that link to someone else's petition? That one says it's for implementing the Leveson recommendations.

I think that the link should be this one.

http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/42582

The number of signatures - 1,357 - doesn't quite tally though.

Yes, I think I made a mistake with my link: THIS is the link for the petition OPPOSING Leveson-style state regulation of the press:

http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/42582

...and it now has 1,358 signatures.

(I started my petition in opposition to the pro-Leveson petition which currently has 5,000+ signatures)

Gerry McCann said the prime minister was faced with choice between either supporting newspaper barons or the victims of press intrusion, saying: "We want our politicians to protect us, to stand up for the ordinary victims instead of siding with the wealthy and powerful."

A year before, Kate McCann had told the inquiry she felt like "climbing into a hole and not coming out" when the News of the World printed her journal, which she began after Madeleine disappeared.

This coming from a woman who wrote a book about the most intimate details, INCLUDING her daughter's genitals. FOR GOD'S SAKE, GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!!

The PCC would have stopped the "unhelpful" stories, without too much of a problem.

However, as it was made abundantly clear, if merely stopping the upsetting stories wasn't sufficient for them and if financial compensation was required, they would have to take legal action.

Rather than quietly get the stories stopped, they let them run and sued.

So an existing, effective mechanism wasn't utilised and now they want draconian measures which would allow those with much to hide to continue to bury the facts.

It's a bit rich, isn't it.

Depends how important winning the next election is to him, doesn't it?

Murdoch's papers are very influential. In the 80's following one election, The Sun carried the headline"It Was The Sun Wot Won It"

Stopping Gerry moaning v total press annihilation prior to what promises to be a very tough election campaign. Place yer bets now.

Mcplanet the one that spins a lot.

What makes H. Grant thinks he has the DIVINE right to jump on the band wagon of the true victims of intrusion by the press. I am guessing we all know the answer to that one.

Jump on the bandwagon

Meaning

Join a growing movement in support of someone
or something, often in an opportunist way, when that movement is seen to
have become successful.

Often followed by a swift leap off and fast jog into the distance when the wheels come off the wagon...

Hacked Off campaign group blackmailed Miliband to curb press

  • The group threatened to release a statement condemning Miliband
  • They also mention Nick Clegg and Harriet Harman in the letter
  • This comes after the coalition parties published rival plans for reform

Read the comments about Grant on this Telegraph link

http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/iainmartin1/100207323/what-should-we-get-hugh-grant-to-look-at-next/

Divine, the prostitute he was caught with in his car is mentioned a good few times. Who the heck chose him as spokesperson. Must be bonkers and as a lot of people are asking why wont anybody say who is funding the Hacked Off campaign?

Excellent piece from Nick Cohen.....

Leveson's liberal friends bring shame upon the left

MPs who vote to regulate the press tomorrow are siding against the principles they're meant to uphold

From the Andrew Marr show today. Hugh Grant tells us about Hacked Off. 16mins 24sec

'if people could see Hacked Off, they talk about us being a smooth sinister operation. It's just a few dandruffy professors sitting in a cheap office with a slightly insane chess champion ex lib-dem MP and a couple of threadbare lawyers and me.'

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01rhgnb/The_Andrew_Marr_Show_17_03_2013/

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
