Stuart Hall to learn whether sex offences jail term is too lenient
Court of appeal will assess whether the former broadcaster deserved more than a 15-month prison sentence

The disgraced broadcaster Stuart Hall faces the prospect of having to spend more time in prison as judges review the length of his sentence for sex offences on Friday.
The attorney-general, Dominic Grieve, has referred Hall's case to the court of appeal to consider whether his 15-month jail term is "unduly lenient" and should be increased.
Hall, 83, from Wilmslow, Cheshire, admitted 14 counts of indecent assault against girls as young as nine between 1967 and 1987.
The former It's A Knockout presenter was sentenced in June at Preston crown court by the recorder of Preston, Judge Anthony Russell QC.
The lord chief justice, Lord Judge, sitting with Justice Rafferty and Justice Macur, will decide at a hearing in London whether Hall's case merits a longer term behind bars

Few extra months? makes me wonder if this is justice seeming to be done.

Disgraced veteran broadcaster Stuart Hall's 15 month jail sentence for sex offences was "unduly lenient", Court of Appeal judges ruled today.
The broadcaster, who appeared in court via video link, will now find out if he has to spend more time in prison for assaulting several girls the youngest of whom was nine.
At the hearing at the Royal Courts of Justice in London, Attorney General Dominic Grieve told the packed courtroom: "The total sentence of 15 months' imprisonment for 14 incidents of indecent assault committed against 13 female victims aged between the ages of nine and 17 ... failed adequately to reflect the gravity of the totality of the offences, and the public concern about offences of this nature.

I would like to know what is going to happen to the Judge who gave him the unduly lenient sentence in the first place, will he be disciplined! Perhaps he should be taken off cases of this nature if he seems to think it is ok to let paedos off with a slap on the wrist.

In the police, the first level of disciplinary reprimand is a weak slap on the wrist and is technically called 'receiving words of advice'.

Maybe the judge in the case will also receive 'words of advice' from someone?

Let's hope he heeds any words of advice, I imagine he would be monitored to see if he makes any other unduly lenient sentences, not sure but I've got an idea that it was mentioned he may be the judge in the case of William Roache?

Will it be the Attorney General who gives the judge words of advice? Words that will mean absoluty nothing, imo it's a case of looking after their own.

I agree Cherry he shouldn't be allowed to be the judge in any cases of this nature, This same judge has been allocated the case of Bill Roach, will he now be replaced?

Yes they totally seem to look after their own, and put a judge who is sympathetic in charge of the case, in light of the wholly unsuitable sentence given to Hall I would think the Attorney General or whoever is in charge of the judges needs to remove him from the William Roache case.

Take a look at page 9 of this topic about Judge Russell.

I don't think that it has been announced whether or not he will be hearing the Bill Roache case.

The credibility of this Judge has certainly been brought into disrepute in more ways than one so there is no way he should
be allowed to preside over the Roache trial, or will they just bring in another of the paedo sympathiser judges!

From three news reports:

ONE

Judge Russell QC applied to become a Circuit Judge in 2004. Following an open competition, conducted by the Commission for Judicial Appointments, Judge Russell was appointed as a full-time circuit judge by Lord Falconer as Lord Chancellor.

In 2005, again following another open competition conducted by the Commission for Judicial Appointments, Lord Falconer appointed Judge Russell to the post of senior circuit judge at Preston Combined Court.”

Lord Falconer, Minister of State at the Cabinet Office, has become chief of the Millennium Dome.

TWO

He replaces Peter Mandelson, who gave up responsibility for the dome alongside his trade and industry portfolio two weeks ago.

Lord Falconer, who shared a flat with Prime Minister Tony Blair when the pair were young barristers, was previously solicitor general before moving to the Cabinet Office...

THREE

Nicholas Watt, political correspondent - The Guardian, Monday 18 September 2000 14.18 BST

Tony Blair's close friend, Lord Falconer, failed to inform him about Peter Mandelson's £373,000 home loan, a new book discloses.

Months before Mr Mandelson suffered his downfall, the dome minister, Lord Falconer, was given vital intelligence about the loan from the Labour MP for Swindon North, Michael Wills, one of Gordon Brown's closest allies.

Lord Falconer promised to remain silent, and the prime minister had no idea about the loan until a few days before Mr Mandelson's resignation from the cabinet, which happened in December 1998.

Lord Falconer was told about the loan during a holiday in Malaga, in the summer of 1998, according to the book by the Observer columnist, Andrew Rawnsley.

"Wills passed on word of Mandelson's loan," Rawnsley writes in Servants of the People. "Sworn to confidence, and not thinking it his place to raise it with Blair, Falconer kept the secret to himself. So Falconer, that best of chums, knew. Brown long knew [about the loan].

"Extraordinarily, the one person who had been kept in a state of complete ignorance was the prime minister."

Rawnsley describes how the prime minister exploded with rage when he finally learned of the loan which was given to Mr Mandelson by the former Treasury minister, Geoffrey Robinson. His financial generosity allowed Mr Mandelson to buy a £475,000 house in one of the smartest streets of London's Notting Hill.

"Jesus Christ, Peter! What a misjudgment," Rawnsley quotes the prime minister as saying.

Lord Falconer is responsible for keeping family courts secret. What do we know about Lord Falconer?

Name Charles Leslie Falconer, Baron Falconer of Thoroton, PC, QC, Britsh barrister and Labour party politician. Falconer became a flatmate of Tony Blair when they were both young barristers in London in the late 1970′s in Wandsworth. Tony Blair is the Prime Minister that invented adoption targets and stated the adoption of children needed to be increased by 50 %. It’s important to state that here for further reference later.
In June 2003 Lord Falconer became the Lord Chancellor and the first secretary of state for constitutional affairs, a position created originally to replace the position of Lord Chancellor.
In May 2007 the department for Constitutional Affairs (DCA) became the new Ministry of Justice. With an enhanced portfolio, that encompasses all the responsibilities of the former DCA plus some functions transferred from the Home Office.
Upon that reorganisation taking effect on may 9th 2007, Lord Falconer became the first Secretary of State for Justice, while keeping the title and role of Lord Chancellor.
In 2007, Lord Falconer crushed an attempt to open the the proceedings of the family courts to public scrutiny and declared that ‘children’s rights to privacy comes first’.
Following Gordon Brown’s succession to the position of Prime Minister, Falconer was replaced as Minister of Justice.
8th July 2008 Falconer joined the London office of Gibson Dunn and Crutcher. Gibson, Dunn and Crutcher resolved the disputed 2000 presidential election in favour of George Bush. Gibson, Dunn and Cruthcher LLP received the 2006 Corporate Award for special achievement in Adoption from the North American Council on Adoptable Children. The firm was honoured for expediting the adoption process of thousands of children.

Lord Falconer also made the headlines by defending a judge who had given a non custodial sentence to a paedophile.
Lord Falconer seems to be very leniant in his views regarding peadophiles and endorses the work of  ’pro paedophile’ psychologist Richard Gardner in the family courts. There was also an outcry regarding the case of Craig Sweeney.

Craig Sweeney (born c. 1982) is a Welsh child sex offender, from Newport in Wales. Public criticism of Sweeney’s sentence voiced by Home Secretary John Reid prompted the House of Commons Constitutional Affairs Committee to recommend that the Ministerial Code be amended with guidelines to govern the public comments of ministers about individual judges to reinforce the provisions within the Constitutional Reform Act 2005.[1] The Committee wrote: “The Sweeney case was the first big test of whether the new relationship between the Lord Chancellor [i.e. Lord Falconer] and the judiciary was working properly, and it is clear that there was a systemic failure.
Craig Sweeney was found guilty of the abduction and sexual assault of a three year-old girl. He was known to the victim’s family, whom he had befriended weeks before the crime.[4] Sweeney was released on licence in late 2005 after serving a term in jail for indecently assaulting a six-year-old in April 2003. While on licence, he was accused of inappropriately touching a child’s bottom, but the police and probation workers did not return him to prison, despite his “risk of harm” being raised to “high”.[5] Sweeney abducted the girl on 2 January 2006, two days after his licence had expired.[4] He drove her to his Newport flat where he was living on licence. He was caught the day after, when he crashed his car during a high speed chase initiated after Sweeney jumped a red light. The girl, who was in the crash with him, survived with minor injuries.[4]Sweeney admitted four charges of kidnapping, three of sexual assault and one of dangerous driving. His defence counsel said he had “shown remorse when arrested and was distressed at the depravity at what he had done”.
He was sentenced to life in prison with a tariff of 18 years, and will be considered for parole after five years and 108 days. The tariff was so because of his co-operation with the police and his guilty plea at the latest opportunity, as well as the time he had spent in custody awaiting trial. On 10 July 2006, it was decided that the case would not be referred to the high court of appeal, as the sentence had been compliant with the law, and he did not want to bow to public pressure. The victim’s mother said she was “Gut-wrenchingly sick” at the decision.
Given what we know about Lord Falconer, should we not be worried who he assigns as Judges, especially when it comes to children’s cases?

all in it together, never a truer word spoken.

15 months for such an evil monster and 30 months is also a joke imo.

Hall is now to face trial for one rape and several more indecent assault charges I believe. Let's hope that if he is found guilty they jail him for life.

As someone on the news report said yesterday he has never apologised for his crimes and he called his victims liars, before admitting guilt. Yet the judge gave him only 15 months. You couldn't make it up and they should make sure that this judge does not preside over any further celeb sex cases imo.

Whining Hall vows to survive jail ‘hell’

PAEDOPHILE broadcaster Stuart Hall has vowed: “I will not die in prison.”
The disgraced 83-year-old whined that jail was a “living hell”, but said he would “stay strong” for his family.
Hall, who last week had his 15-month sentence doubled after judges ruled it was too soft, plans to be a “model prisoner” in the hope of an early release.
The married dad of two — jailed for sexually assaulting 13 women aged nine to 17 — said: “I will take what’s coming to me.”
The former It’s A Knockout presenter opened up to a pal at Preston Prison. The friend then confided in a relative who told The Sun: “Hall lives every day in fear of attack despite being frail and unsteady on his feet.
“He plays the sick old man card perfectly to make people feel sorry for him, but mentally he is still very sharp and knows how to play the prison system.
“Most of the inmates think he’s a sad dirty old man and can’t be bothered to taunt him but some of the younger guys bang on his cell door as they walk past calling him a nonce. He just sits in the corner of his cell staring at the four walls or lying on the bottom bunk for hours on end.”
Hall, of Wilmslow, Cheshire, was jailed last month after he admitted to sickening abuse that took place over nearly 20 years.
At least 17 women are bringing compensation claims against the football broadcaster and the BBC

I'm surprised that such a famous, high profile sex-offender isn't being kept in solitary confinement for his own safety.

More to come apparently re abuse by SH, fresh allegations made. Why the wives and families of these people stand by them, I will never understand.
You find out that the person you love and respect, be it a spouse, parent, family member or friend has abused a child and then called that child a liar.....and you stand by them?

Un-bloody-believable, isn't it? Hall is acting as though he has an entitlement to be a sex attacker and it's an affront to have been given a sentence. What a horrible vile man, and his family sound no better.

Cherry Blossom - Cherry, thanks for posting info on Lord Falconer.

You're welcome thumbsup

Paedophiles are totally selfish and manipulative, always blaming their victims and feeling hard done by when they get caught out, not surprising Hall is playing the sympathy card, and of course he has his supporters who will be feeling sorry for him - Barbara Hewson (member of the legal profession who dismisses Hall's abuse as a bit of 'groping'), Anne Diamond, and Helen Flanagan just to mention a few.

He should thank his lucky stars I was not the judge on the case cos if I were a judge and sat on his case he would have been more likely to get a minimum of 30 years!
