Scotland Yard in Porto because of Maddie

January 21, 2013 by Joaquim Gomes

The brigade of Scotland Yard who is responsible for the investigation into the disappearance of British Madeleine McCann is on the premises of the Judicial Police of the Port to "take stock of the situation 'case - knew the SOL.
The British police today arrived to Porto and are currently meeting with fellow Judiciary Police (PJ). Reopening and review of the investigation into the case 'Maddie' - missing for nearly six years - was started ten months ago, having the direction of the National Judicial tasked a special team led by Helena Monteiro, coordinator of criminal investigation over PJ. British authorities expect any new data to be collected by the special team of PJ Port allow the process to be formally reopened by the Ministry Public. After an initial investigation led by Gonçalo Amaral, the case now, still in PJ of Portimão, to Paulo Rebelo, the current director of the PJ Lisbon, but without any practical results. Madeleine McCann disappeared on the night of 9 May 2007 from an apartment in a tourist resort of Praia da Luz, in the Algarve, never having been found so far. At the time, Maddie McCann was complete nine days of age of four.

So SY haven't rushed to Brazil then they've rushed to Portugal instead. Bit of an error in that Madeleine disappeared on 9th May. The reveiw has been going on for longer than 10 mths but perhaps it means when Helena Monteiio took over?

I may sound like a weathered feminist [which I'm not, but that's a longer story to explain ...] but I do like females in higher positions, so have a lot of hope in Helena Monteiro ...

I’m taking bets that SY are coming under serious behind the scenes pressure to wind this up pronto ie at the two year mark and this is a last ditch effort to get the PJ to play the game and reopen the enquiry on the basis M is still alive.

What odds?

And can someone tweet the PJ and inform them that if SY show them a photo purportedly from Brazil they shouldn’t laugh too loudly at that doozie.

Ahem, what's this then? First, Blacksmith blogs about the settlement and then confirmation from the Portuguese press that the case has been suspended. This was followed swiftly by the Mirror and the Mail stories on Kate the Ploughwoman and then came the Express Brazil story. Not long after, we hear from the Irish press that Kate sent her thanks to students who created a website for missing people. Now, this- all in the last 72 or so hours!

Do you think that SY read these threads, I hope so.
They have SURELY got to realise that the photo is duff?! If we know it is then they must too?

Kate McCann will be pleased about that...she said it was crucial for the case to be reopened, even though she could have done this years ago by buying a stamp and writing to the Portuguese Prosecutors office.

Looks like she's getting her wish.

The request for `a settlement` makes sense if they`ve been told that SY haven`t believed all their porkies.

Then Pinkie gets to work with his diversionary media spinning.

I have no idea what is going on, but I have read in the past that B Hogan Howe, the chief of the Met Police is a very no nonsense kind of person. He is also the one who was reported last year to be asking the govt about wrapping the review up or not.

I seriously hope this case will not end up like the Jon Benet Ramsey case in the USA.

If Joana`s right and the case is to be re-opened, it must mean that either SY agree that the case was shelved hastily before there was a chance of interviewing the Smiths and doing a reconstruction, or that they themselves have found new evidence for or against the abduction story.

Touch wood. I wonder if SY/PJ ask the tapas group to do a reconstruction, as they do in many cold cases, years and years later, and which such latter reconstructions have brought forward new witnesses, they refuse because they personally couldnt see the point of it? Or the dates clashed with their diary dates?

If the case is reopened, the McCanns will have no choice but to cooperate fully. With SY involved, they won't be able to pick and choose what aspects to cooperate with like they did with the PJ. Even if SY conclude it was an abduction and the PJ should reopen the case to investigate that theory, I would imagine the PJ can still decide to call for the reconstruction if only to rule out parental involvement.

Indeed. All the old excuses couldn't wash in today's context. Does sound like chickens home to roost somewhat.

The bottom line should be this. After 2 years reviewing all the files and sifting through the dross of exotic sightings any right minded person (let alone professional investigator) with half a brain could quickly determine that the statements given by the group do not add up, contradict each other and outright mislead.

Given that members of this group were the last people to see the child alive and also the only ones to "see" the abductor then the only possible way this case could restart is by re-examining what they stated happened.

We all know from reading the files that their statements are a myriad of inaccuracies, deceptions and mistruths and given the stats the starting (and finishing) point for any reinvestigation is right there with those 9 people.

May i propose the first question in interview (and under caution)

Now then Jane, about that identifictaion in the refrigerated van......

What is certain is that since the start of the investigation there were  incongruent and even contradictory situations concerning the witness statements; the telephone records of calls that were made and received on mobile phones that belonged to the couple and to the group of friends that were on holidays with them; the movements of people right after the disappearance of the little girl was noticed, concerning the state in which the bedroom from where the child disappeared from was found (closed window? open window? partially open window?) etc., and the mystery would only become even thicker due to the clues that were left by the already mentioned sniffer dogs. - The Words of a JUDGE in relation to the McCanns

Me, I said a year ago plus that the Met's reputation would be damaged if they did not do their job properly.

it cannot take 30-40 officers two years to read the bleedin files

TBH I forgot what their remit was or any powers but I DO think they will come up with some solid goods, the atmosphere and time is ripe for bringing people to justice, and it aint R Hewlett or someone who rented the flat 10 years ago and walked away withthe keys to come back later and abduct a child as Gerry Mccann has intimated as a possibility in a certain CNN interview with Piers Morgan

MORGAN: Do you know that yet? Do you know -- is there any evidence how this person came in the room?

G. MCCANN: I mean no doubt, there are a number of options. And --

MORGAN: No, actual evidence. There's nothing they could find to say this is unequivocally how this person came in?

G. MCCANN: No. I mean, it's possible they came through the window. They could have come through the patio doors, although that was in sight of where we were dining. So I think that's probably less likely. For all we know, they could have had a key, you know, lots of people stayed in that apartment over years to the front door --

Re: Scotland Yard in Porto because of Maddie

Post by Hobs on 22.01.13 0:40

The first two questions in any interview should be

1) What happened?

2) What happened next?

Never ask compound questions

Never introduce new language, only use a new word when the subject introduces it.

Look for changes in language, a change in language indicates a change in reality, what prompted the change?

Look and listen for dropped pronouns such as I, me, mine. If they can't take ownership of what they are saying we can't do it for them.

Look and listen to when the pronoun changes from i to we or you where I is appropriate. When they say you would do this or feel that they aren't telling us what they did or felt.

We, us indicates sharing often of guilt. we want to know what the subject did, saw, felt not what they did as a group.

Look and listen for temporal lacunas ( gaps in time) or when event happen out of chronological order.

Look for extra info such as brushing teeth, showers/water/washing of hands/ lights turned on or off/doors opening or closing/ mention of towels , blankets etc, all can indicate domestic violence or sexual abuse.

Sentences beginning with 'AND' as this indicates missing information.

Never interrupt an answer.

In gaps where nothing is said wait, guilty people don't like empty spaces and will fill it.

Words such as so, because, therfore etc. this tells us why something happened.

Let the subject guide the interview, let them do most of the talking, usue only language they themselves have introduced, feel free to ask the same questions in a different way to check their answer or get them to go through the time backwards , a true story can be talked of forwards and backwards since it is experienced memory, deceptive people have difficulty since they are maiking i up as they go long.

Listen/look for the correct tense, past tense for an experienced memory, story tellers tend to use present tens as they are making it up as they go along.

Listen when it changes.

Look /listen for strong first person singular event specific past tense reliable denials ie I did not kill Madeleine.

Look/listen for minimising or weakning of a a denial such as i would never hurt that child when the child is murdered.Hurt is a minimising word along with words like harm etc.

Would is a future conditional word and weakens a statement. I would never do drugs is not the same as i didn't take frugs as they may never take them again now they've been caught.

Never doesn't mean no, phrases such as absolutely not, nver ever (unles the question asks have you ever...? in which case never is appropriate)

Repetition of words such as stammering where they don't usually, repeated no, no no this can indicate sensitivity.

Qualifiers after a denial, this weakens the statement such as no i didn't, i would never...

The word 'BUT' which negates what was previously said.

one or two red flags doesn't mean the subject is lying it does however cause us to note the areas they showed and to ask more questions.

Three is the lairs number (Mark McClish) deceptive people when forced to give a number often use 3, 3 men, 3 o'clock etc. It doesn't automatically mean they are lying, i should however be noted. (charlie rogers and her 3 male abusers - she finally admitted to setting her house on fire very little damge, and to carving the slurs on her body - lightly and in areas she could reach and painting slurs on her basement wall. her videos are a good example of deceptive statement.)

There are plenty more , this gives you an idea what to look for when analysing a statement or conducting an interview
