Was Kate on bed rest throughout pregnancy for twins? Who cared for Madeleine?

Post by juliet on 24.04.12 20:39

I found this on McCann files, from May 14, 2007, transcript of a video from a Dutch TV interview - video no longer available. It was news to me that Kate was recommended bed rest. Could it explain why McCanns seem so distant from Madeleine? Was she sent away to relatives for all those months??

Seija Rutter: "They came over because Gerry, errr... was working at the VU hospital doing some research - he's a cardiologist. So, that's the reason why they was over here. And, errr... when they fell pregnant with the twins they almost, errr... miscarried the twins and they were advised that, errr... Kate has to have complete bed rest for the rest of the pregnancy and I think at the time she was only 7 or 8 weeks pregnant, so they decided to move back to the UK so they could have support of friends and family around them."

Seija Rutter: "She's a very strong-willed child. She's, errr... very witty. Always was a happy child, always was a... ehhh. Just... just bubbly and... yeah. And I... I'd imagine right now that she's probably feeling very scared and being away from her family and... I just, yeah

i'm pretty sure she was heavily pregnant by the time she went to the UK to have the twins. So the bed rest would have been in Amsterdam.

She made a point of saying that the Dutch doctors weren't sympathetic and that's why she decided to have the twins in the UK - she moved sometime in December I believe. It's in the bewk.

From Kate's Aunt Janet Kennedy's statement:

When Madeleine was small, Gerry arranged work in Amsterdam and shortly after living there with Kate, she discovered that she was pregnant with twins. There were some problems with this pregnancy and she needed lots of bed rest. Once again the family helped. They travelled back and forth to offer help. However, even though this was the case, Kate never neglected her care of Madeleine even though it was very complicated.

Kate had a few scares during her pregnancy with the twins and I remember that it was necessary for a doctor to certify her ability to travel by airplane home with me, on the 1st December.

Gerry and Madeleine travelled in the family car and via ‘ferry’. Madeleine was very close to Gerry; she was always at his side.

Different story to Kate's friend who said they came back to the UK, Aunt Janet reckons the family all went to them!

I find it very strange that Aunt Janet and Kate travelled back to the UK by plane and Gerry drove back with Madeleine. Why on earth didn't they take Madeleine back on the plane with them? It's less than an hour's journey and yet by car and ferry, about 16 hours I believe. Why would a father chose to take his 18 month old child on that long journey alone? I find that most odd.

Hi Genbug. Well Gerry was bringing the car back to the UK ladened with belongings. Maybe Kate had to be in a wheel chair and so Aunt Janet had her hands full dealing with that so the active toddler was fastened into the car seat and driven back. Just surmising here.

Hi Nina, yes, I'm guessing that's the case. Still think it's far too long a journey with a small child though, you'd think one of the helpful family would have gone across and flown back with her. It would be my worst nightmare to do that long trip alone with an 18 month old, LOL!

I find it even stranger that Kate chose to fly when there was a car travelling by ferry ! An advanced twin pregnancy, with complications, and she flew. A most unusual choice imo.

I felt this might be a clue to why the McCanns seem to have so little knowledge of Madeleine (or at least so little they want to share). Apart from saying she liked Harry Potter and Dr Who (at three?) they seem to scarcely know her. There is so little about what she was like as a baby or toddler, and nothing really loving and personal.

Maybe they hived off her care to relatives quite early on, because she was so difficult, and Kate McCann was ill.

From the book. Lots of unnecessary gynaecological and obstetric detail, as usual, but she is a doctor ...

"At twenty-four weeks, a transvaginal
ultrasound scan to measure the cervix (the shorter it is, the
greater the risk of the mother going into premature labour)
revealed that mine had pretty much reduced to nothing. I
was immediately put on to a trolley and admitted to a ward,
where I was to remain on bed rest to reduce the
gravitational pressure. The tears flowed, initially not so
much because of the risk to my pregnancy but because I
was distraught at the prospect of being parted from
Madeleine.

At twenty-seven weeks I began to bleed and had to go
back into hospital. We were worried about the babies
being born prematurely in the Netherlands. If that happened
we would have to stay on after Gerry’s fellowship had
ended, with no family support and no income, so it was
imperative to get me back home as soon as possible –
provided, of course, our specialist felt it was safe enough
for me to travel. He did, and on 1 December, a month
ahead of schedule, we departed for the UK. On the advice
of my consultant I flew, accompanied by my Auntie Janet,
with Gerry, Madeleine and most of our belongings following
by car and ferry."

If your babies come now,’ the specialist told me bluntly, ‘they die.’ Perhaps his English did not stretch to the expression of empathy or tact; perhaps the Dutch bedside manner is just to tell it like it is.

This was the bit that annoyed me. Most subjects are taught in English at Dutch Universities, as publishing a thesis in Dutch isn't a great career move.

Wherever possible, the xenophobe card is played.

What's interesting is that is was money again - not the birth situation itself that decided the move back to the UK. So a fellowship is well paid, their house was rented out but there would be 'no family support and no income' . Compassionate leave certainly would have applied?
It's cheaper to take a plane to Amsterdam than a train ticket to Leicester, so?
Gerry could even have commuted.
Why once again no money, the IVF was free, the medical care was free.

Perhaps this subject needs a further look.

I came across this video. A friend of the McCann's, whom they met in Amsterdam, clearly says that they left the country when Kate was 7/8 week pregnant with the twins.

In the book of truth Kate is saying that she was 27 weeks pregnant.  Weird!

Please scroll down to 'Dutch video, 14th May.
