I agree, my reading of events if you push away all the "spin", "hype" and lazy reporting of today is that what TM have feared, dreaded and had no desire to happen is just about to - the case is going to be reopened and all those questions they've done so well to avoid and side step are going to re-surface and be asked of them again.

Can they be re-questioned? They just have to say "Nah, don`t want to".

Yes, but ........... have they analysed ALL the evidence - I doubt it. Have they looked at the Mcs bank account, credit card details, phone calls, medical records and any other relevant records. If they haven`t, they can hardly say they`ve analysed all the evidence.

No, Redwood says in the interview they are only a quarter of the way through, so still 75% to go! So how they can be giving statements at this early stage is rather strange. They say they have evidence she may be alive, how can that be, they either know she is or they don't.

Yes, it is strange and not looking good. It`s plain to see they are making statements without having ALL the evidence. Probably its only the PJ (with a judge`s warrant) that can even apply for medical records, bank details etc., so they certainly have not got all the evidence or all the pieces of the jigsaw and should not be saying so.

For the Met said read the TM said

I am becoming less and less optimistic about the whole 'review'. Of course it's possible she is alive because nobody has so far discovered her body. But unless they have uncovered some new evidence PJ didn't have, how can they possibly give more credence to abduction? Rolling Eyes

Why is it breaking News ? What news is new? Have the UK side ever said she is dead?

That is an excellent point aiyoyo. Suppose it is because SY have said the "could" or "may be" be alive.

From the Independant.........

Mr Redwood said "evidence that she is alive stems from the forensic view of the timeline" that there was the opportunity for her to be taken.

Investigations show "there do appear to be gaps", he added.

Makes you wonder if this Press release by SY is a way of seeing how the McCanns, their allies, spokesman et al react to it. Bet the Tapas crew are feeling the stress, and as Redwood said SY are only a quarter of the way through. It's causing a helluva lot of frenzy and activity - what's it going to be like further down the review? Cans of worms and cats amongst the pigeons!

He's luring them back to PT to do the reconstruction?

He said only 25% of the files is covered with every page scrutinized and analyzed meaning 75% left to go, yet he's already saying "sadly she could be dead", and on the same breath also said "there are 195 possible leads and she could be alive".

In effect he hasn't told people anything at all, if not alive means dead, what else is left? half dead and half alive?

If this is only 1st quarterly report, what will he say by the 4th quarter? Dogs evidence should be in the 2nd quarter.

I have just watched Andy Redwood talking on ITV news and it seems they are still going with the abduction theory. How is this the "best opportunity to solve the mystery because it was the first time information from all sources is being considered" if SY are ignoring the findings of the PJ and still going along with the abduction theory!! The mind boggles it really does. I was hopeful that this would be a thorough, unbiased review and not a whitewash. I am very disappointed.

I agree! Sad to say i dont trust SY anymore..... BUT it could all be a smokescreen to have the case re-opened? and THAT Is something the McCanns would not want.

Redwood can hardly go on international TV and say he totally discounted the possibility of anything, before he even read the papers or concluded all his avenues of enquiry, can he ?
That would be as ludicrous as totally discounting the evidence of the dogs out of hand.
No sensible professional person would do that. Would they ?

This is getting more and more bizarre by the minute. In all the other articles, it has said that when DCI Redwood was asked what evidence he had that Madleine could be alive, he said he would not comment on that. Now we have this snippet suddenly appear in the Independant. It is a total farce!

Panorama tonight to claim that News International pressured David Cameron into new Maddy McCann inquiry, quoting No10 insiders

Is the shit about to hit the fan?

News International titles have always been supportive of mccanns so what would be their purpose of pressuring DC into an inquiry?
What did they hope to achieve by that since the review is beyond their control?
How is an independent review conducted by Police who pledge allegiance to the Crown going to suit the News International agenda?

Either there is something very sinister going on involving media, politicians, and Police, or News International was doing the dirty on the mccanns?

Just looking at the quote again above he says taken not abducted, He says this later in the article........

Mr Redwood added: "We would like the case to be reopened, our case is clear... (But) I should stress quite clearly that the decision is in Portugal."

He said this did not mean that his review of the case was toothless.

"What we are not doing is just passively passing through material. We are actively seeking to bring closure in this case."

There is a "timeline of opportunities" indicating the little girl was taken "as a criminal act", he added.

Again not abducted.

As it is only a review at the moment I doubt SY would be able to look at bank accounts, credit card details, until the case was officially opened as an ongoing Police operation again. They are obviously looking into every detail to make sure they have enough substance to open the case again so all these things can be looked into.

As for saying they believe Madeleine McCann was abducted, maybe it's their way of keeping the investigation ongoing, as if they said she's probably dead it would be harder for them to investigate if they haven't got a body and would be easy to say she was killed by "person or persons unknown", if that makes sense.

Yes, it is strange and not looking good. It`s plain to see they are making statements without having ALL the evidence. Probably its only the PJ (with a judge`s warrant) that can even apply for medical records, bank details etc., so they certainly have not got all the evidence or all the pieces of the jigsaw and should not be saying so.

http://www.thestar.com/news/world/article/1167563--missing-girl-madeleine-mccann-could-still-be-alive-police

Missing girl Madeleine McCann could still be alive: police
LONDON—British police on Wednesday asked Portugal to reopen the case of missing girl Madeleine McCann, saying that as the fifth anniversary of her disappearance approaches there is a possibility she is still alive.

Police also released a new image of what McCann would likely look like today, expressing hope that she would be found even years after the then-3-year-old vanished on May 3 while on a trip to Portugal with her family.

The case sparked global interest because of heartbreaking images of the girl beamed around the world and, in part, because her parents were briefly considered suspects before they were cleared.

In a rare press conference on the case, Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood said he is leading a team of 37 police officers reviewing some 40,000 pieces of evidence gathered so far. The team has identified some 195 possible leads to be followed up on, he said.

Redwood said forensic evidence of the sequence of events around her disappearance shows there are moments when she could have been snatched by criminals. He said he had an “open mind” on who could have abducted her, but asked for the help of Portuguese authorities, who closed the case in 2008.

“We would like the case to be reopened; our case is clear,” Redwood told reporters Wednesday. “I should stress quite clearly that the decision is in Portugal.”

He acknowledged that police have to consider that McCann may be dead despite hopes that she is alive.

“Our drive on both scenarios is of equal measure,” he said, choosing his words carefully.

There has been no reliable indication of what might have happened to the girl despite numerous reported sightings from around the world.

Redwood said he has made seven visits to Portugal and is working closely with Portuguese police officers. He has had regular contact with the missing girl’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, who have pressed to keep the case in the public eye, publishing a book and appearing on the “Oprah Winfrey Show.”

Police said the investigation has cost about 2 million pounds ($3.2 million) so far.

He has had regular contact with the missing girl’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann,!! !

The Head of the Review regularly updating the mccanns? Is this real?

Would this be reason Kate got material for her epilogue?

There is something most peculiar and unsettling about all this. As has always been in this case. However if there is in fact real new evidence which supports SY plumping for stranger abduction as the explanation for the disappearance surely they will need to share some of this at some point with the tax paying public. Nothing would make me happier than to learn that this little girl is alive and unharmed. I would be thrilled to have to revise my view based on new promising evidence or leads. However the evidence we currently have points in other directions. On another note thank god for the currently free internet as we can clearly no longer rely on even our supposed quality press to have any regard for balance.

thumbsup I will have a front row seat with bells on. The little ones, well, it's milk, biscuits, story and to the bedroom with them titter with a little something to aid sleep (I jest) so that I can watch this in relative peace. I'll reserve my comments 'till SY have concluded their findings. After all, the fat lady hasn't even come on stage yet to sing and as my dear wee Granny used to say, "There's many a slip 'twixt cup and lip...".
