I know it's the Mirror, but

Madeleine McCann case on verge of being formally reopened, mum Kate believes

Kate McCann has told of her renewed hopes of finding Madeleine in a new version of her book for the fifth anniversary of her daughter’s disappearance.

Mum Kate has written an emotional epilogue for the book reflecting on Scotland Yard’s review into the case and said she will never give up the belief that Maddie is still alive.

The Sunday Mirror can also reveal that the Met Police will complete a comprehensive report with a series of recommendations later in the year and it is hoped it will lead the Portuguese Police to formally reopening the case.

A cold case unit has been set up by the Policia Judiciaria in Porto and they will be considering a number of leads Scotland Yard have suggested should be reinvestigated in the review set up last year.

A source said: “There is a very good possibility the case will be formally reopened later in the year. There has been a significant improvement in cooperation between the Portuguese and UK police.

“The Met have put a lot of resources into the review and they want a result. It is a decision for the Portuguese authorities to reopen the case but when they see the report from the Met there will more than enough reasons to launch a new investigation.

“The cold case review by the Portuguese Police was a big step in the right direction and the momentum is gathering pace. The renewed optimism is reflected in Kate’s updated book in which she writes about the review.”

Kate’s new paperback version of the book, simply titled Madeleine, will be released on May 10, seven days after the fifth anniversary of her daughter’s disappearance.

The source said: “Kate has spent several months writing the epilogue and it will bring the tragic story up to date with the police review which Scotland Yard has been carrying out since the fourth anniversary.

“The new version will reflect Kate and Gerry’s optimism that the involvement of the Met and the review in Portugal is giving them renewed hope.

“In the epilogue Kate talks about her gratitude towards the Met because she realises the significance of the review in moving forward towards the case being reopened. She thanks the police and talks about her hope for the future.

“Kate and Gerry will never give up hope in finding Madeleine and while the fifth anniversary is another sad milestone they are looking forward to the completion of the review.”

The book sold more than 280,000 copies in Britain with thousands more bought around the world and it is hoped the new updated version with Kate’s epilogue will boost sales further to raise money for the appeal to find the youngster.

Maddie was just days short of her fourth birthday when she vanished from Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007 as her parents dined at a nearby tapas bar with friends.

An international hunt was launched for Maddie but the Portuguese police were criticised for making Kate, 44, and hospital consultant Gerry, 43, formal suspects in the case.

The parents were officially cleared of any involvement in July 2008 but the case was also shelved leaving the McCanns to carry on their desperate search with the help of private investigators.

Under renewed pressure last year Scotland Yard announced it was reviewing the case and 30 murder squad detectives were assigned to Operation Grange and a number of offices made at least four trips to Portugal and Spain.

It was reported in December that the Met were examining eight “important” new leads and it is understood the leads will form part of the recommendations when the report is handed over to the Portuguese Police in a “matter of months”.

WHY are they still printing this dross:

"The parents were officially cleared of any involvement in July 2008 but the case was also shelved leaving the McCanns to carry on their desperate search with the help of private investigators."

NO, they were not 'cleared of any involvement'. I want to scream every time I read that. How's about one paper have the guts to print the real version?:

"Due to lack of co-operation leading to a dearth of evidence, the couple were released from their arguido (suspect) status, with the case to be archived. The McCanns were able to appeal the archiving, yet for reasons unknown they chose not to, then whined to all and sundry that no police force was looking for their daughter..."

Or:
The investigation was shelved after the McCanns refused to cooperate with the PJ, such as a re-enactment of the crime and answering questions from the PJ. (Mrs. McCann - who is a deeply religious woman - recited instead a secret mantra which may mean that she also has Buddhist tendencies).
Ten months after the McCanns fled back to the UK their arguido status was lifted and the investigation by the PJ was 'shelved'.
A simple request by letter from the McCanns will re-open the investigation. At present the McCanns are waiting until donations have brought in sufficient funds to purchase the paper, envelope and the stamp necessary for this request.

What aspect about the review is she reflecting on? The search? Is she voluntary information? Are they keeping her updated? I doubt its any of those, I wonder what epilogue she is going to come up with that fill the pages?

This bit if true, couldnt have come from mccann. And if Met has not told mirror either. It's likely Mirror was just guessing. Too general because they could move the goal post by coming up with an excuse.

A cold case unit has been set up by the Policia Judiciaria in Porto and they will be considering a number of leads Scotland Yard have suggested should be reinvestigated in the review set up last year.

Really! now suddenly the Yard who has secondary primacy all along, has the power to tell PJ what to do? Err ...is that pig flying past?
First the case is not reopened, PJ not given remit to investigate, except papers review, neither can PJ works with PI if I am not wrong because PI parallel investigation is interdict in Portugal.

[/b]
A source said: “There is a very good possibility the case will be formally reopened later in the year. There has been a significant improvement in cooperation between the Portuguese and UK police.

Those bits are quoted from source. So effectively it means Pinky thinks PJ is waiting to see a report from Yard before they can decide their next move, and that be would to reopen the case! Err..! Ob dear. What could that mean?
This is about CM warming up the bewk promotion for kate, then the red carpet will be laid down for HRH kate and gerry to tour the continent to promote her revised version of the truth.

Kate’s new paperback version of the book, simply titled Madeleine, will be released on May 10, seven days after the fifth anniversary of her daughter’s disappearance.

Raise money to find her....but which set of detective is working on that now? Did they give the latest leads from their latest detectives to Met? Thought their first detective agency was still sitting on leads?

Maddie was just days short of her fourth birthday when she vanished from Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007 as her parents dined at a nearby tapas bar with friends.

An international hunt was launched for Maddie but the Portuguese police were criticised for making Kate, 44, and hospital consultant Gerry, 43, formal suspects in the case.

Not exonerated yet in a Court of Law!

Why would the Yard tell mccanns they were going to include the 8 leads as part of their recommendations in their report to PJ?
Err. the mccanns are so deluded or fooling themselves.

Erm, these '8 new leads' - weren't they in Metodo3 files? Haven't SY discredited their pathetic 'investigation'?
Even if true, these 8 new leads could be anything - no mention of shadowy suspects or e-fits - maybe they mean the Tapas 9 minus 1 - maybe Dianne Webster?

"“The Met have put a lot of resources into the review and they want a result. It is a decision for the Portuguese authorities to reopen the case but when they see the report from the Met there will more than enough reasons to launch a new investigation."

If you look at this optimistically, there are of course plenty of reasons to relaunch an investigation, starting with the reinterviewing of the Tapas 9. How much of their stories would they remember? It's not easy for the brain to remember a reconstructed version of events. Five years on, how different would their stories be?

“In the epilogue Kate talks about her gratitude towards the Met because she realises the significance of the review in moving forward towards the case being reopened. She thanks the police and talks about her hope for the future."

This sycophantic nonsense sounds like someone is getting worried about the outcome of the review and wants to try and influence the direction of the case. This all sounds a bit desperate to me.

Madeleine McCann case on verge of being formally reopened, mum Kate believes
The source said: “Kate has spent several months writing the epilogue ...
Several MONTHS ? How long is the epilogue ?

The book sold more than 280,000 copies in Britain with thousands more bought around the world and it is hoped the new updated version with Kate’s epilogue will boost sales further to raise money for the appeal to find the youngster.
Money for the appeal to find the youngster. What does this mea? There is no mention of "search:"

Maddie was just days short of her fourth birthday when she vanished from Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007 as her parents dined at a nearby tapas bar with friends.
Good word - vanished. Not Abducted.

An international hunt was launched for Maddie but the Portuguese police were criticised for making Kate, 44, and hospital consultant Gerry, 43, formal suspects in the case.
Criticised - by the McCanns. Criticised by others for not making them formal suspects right from the start.

The parents were officially cleared of any involvement in July 2008 but the case was also shelved leaving the McCanns to carry on their desperate search with the help of private investigators.

From the Sunday Mirror:
The book sold more than 280,000 copies in Britain with thousands more bought around the world and [i]it is hoped the new updated version with Kate’s epilogue will boost sales further to raise money for the appeal to find the youngster. unquote

So we can expect the faithful tabloids to tell us soon that 'new' information is added to the paperback. I wonder if any 'corrections' will have been made to the text with the expert help of this forum and CR!

Don't think it will sell that well - people are just getting very bored with the pair still trying to get money out of the public.

280.000 here? Say 70.000 abroad, I doubt more than that. Then the Sun serialization and NONE of that according to Mrs. O'Dowd the accountant, gone into the Fund.

If there was an advance of say half a million, still no royalties. After tax it could only work out at about a quarter of a million to 300.000.
As far as the book is concerned - in marketing terms there is such a thing as saturation point. I feel it's been reached.

not possible to alter an "account of the truth ", even additions, not amendments , will look suspicious...but then only those who bother to read more dross will note the changes.

Kate cannot have written the epilogue..the review hasn't been completed yet. I am sure SY have not been reporting to the McCanns. I think the the "epilogue" is to try to address the issues that have been raised so far by the review...Metodo 3's work being dismissed by SY for one. The McCanns will need to explain to the public why their donated money was wasted on these so called investigators. I am sure KM will be whinging how they were taken in by the 'big boys', and how they didn't know anything about hiring reliable PI's.

Perhaps they also need to beg for more money now before SY release their report, I bet the McCanns won't be declared innocent of any involvement in the disappearance of Madeleine, as I am sure it would of been quoted in the newspapers by now from a 'close relative' or 'reliable source'.

I don't think they've been briefed either, hence no triumphant messages on their webpage.

Lets face it, the police don't usually tip their hand - if the day comes, the first we'll know is when they are arrested (not IF, I'm still staying positive!!!)

The Sunday Express understands that Leicestershire Police, who have worked closely with Portuguese detectives, have formally handed over all their information on the case to the Yard. The files include video interviews and scores of witness statements. “Effectively the Met has now taken over the British side of the investigation,” said a source.

Re: I know it's the Mirror, but

The Sunday Mirror can also reveal that the Met Police will complete a comprehensive report with a series of recommendations later in the year and it is hoped it will lead the Portuguese Police to formally reopening the case.

A cold case unit has been set up by the Policia Judiciaria in Porto and they will be considering a number of leads Scotland Yard have suggested should be reinvestigated in the review set up last year.

The Met have put a lot of resources into the review and they want a result. It is a decision for the Portuguese authorities to reopen the case but when they see the report from the Met there will more than enough reasons to launch a new investigation.

It was reported in December that the Met were examining eight “important” new leads and it is understood the leads will form part of the recommendations when the report is handed over to the Portuguese Police in a “matter of months”.

Every other line in that report suggests mccanns are desperate for people to believe that the Yard will hand in a report to Oporto recommending leads to be followed up, and because of that the Oporto is obliged to reopen the case in order to investigate the leads
So what have their detectives been doing all this while if they haven't followed up these IMPORTANT leads? Why are they sitting on leads waiting for PJ to do something about them?

Going by the spin put out by their source, one can imagine kate's epilogue, which she spent few months writing (since the start of the Yard's review no doubt) will be about her over-imagination about how the Yard will dig out leads and hand them over to the PJ, and nothing else. I wonder what gave kate the impression the Yard is doing exclusively that ie review their leads?

This spin is just part of their strategy against what is to come no doubt. Imagine when the Yard finally announce the re-interview of the T7, how is team mccann going to explain kate's epilogue?
