Sniffer dog used in search for Madeleine McCann found missing Orkney man's body

Feb 17 2010

A SNIFFER dog used in the search for missing Madeleine McCann found a man buried in sand dunes in Orkney, a court heard yesterday.

FBI consultant Martin Grime told the High Court in Glasgow he and his springer spaniels Eddie, Keela and Morse were called in by police in the hunt for Bob Rose, who disappeared on the island of Sanday last June.

Eddie, who is trained to detect dead bodies and was used in the McCann case and the Soham murders inquiry, reacted when he was taken to sand dunes at Sty Wick on June 24.

Mr Grime said: "His normal reaction is to bark. On this occasion he started to dig."

The body of "Black Bob" Rose was later found at the spot.

The trial was also told one of the two men on trial for Bob's murder, Stephen Crummack, had indicated the area to police days before.

Detective Constable Neil Docherty said Crummack, 51, went on to blame his co-accused, John Campbell, 59, for killing Bob.

The pair deny murder and a string of related charges and the trial continues.

Whoohoo Good article. Like the way they say the dogs used in the Madeleine case were used. Don't think this will go down well with certain quarters! Think they may be doing a bit of this lalala laugh

Excellent job for the dogs - a bit less experimental that locating scent alone.

Not heard about 'Morse' before...wonder if he's new.

Indeed a bit less experimental Vaguely1, doing what they're trained to do, find a corpse. Morse is no new dog though. Sorry no time to do a link now.
Perhaps somebody else will?

ETA sorry perhaps I got that bit wrong. There's (been?) another dog, Frenkie mentioned in the papers.

Morse is mentioned in his personal profile :

"I also have a six-month old English Springer spaniel dog, puppy, in training, 'Morse' ".

"A murder trial jury has been shown a video of an accused taking police to sand dunes where he claimed a father was buried.
Stephen Crummack told detectives that 54-year-old Robert Rose's body was lying in a grave on the Orkney island of Sanday."
Mr Crummack, 51, and John Thomson, 59, deny murder.

The body of Mr Rose, who had moved to Sanday from Rotherham, was found in Sanday last June after a major missing person inquiry.
In the video, Mr Crummack - dressed in all-in-one white protective clothing - was heard giving directions to the police officers during the six-mile journey from his home on the island.

Wonder if that's happened before they send in the dog?

I'd have thought that was why they took the dog in, because they had to find him after the area was pointed out....or am I reading it wrong?

No, I think you're right. So they knew there was a body and they knew (approximately) where to find it?

Yes, otherwise they'd have had to have trawl across the entire length of the sand dunes.

The identification of an area cuts down the dogs search time, and the dogs indication cuts down the search team's digging time.

Was talking to someone the other day who had seen them searching woodland where the search team used metal poles to break the surface of the ground to release gases (?) from anything buried there. Said they were alerting all over the place because of broken down organic matter - but I think they had probably be trained differently to Eddie...and Morse. I don't remember any mention of broken down organic matter in Grime's spiel about them. x
