Costa Concordia captain claims he tripped and fell into a lifeboat

Francesco Schettino explains at hearing why he could not lead evacuation of stricken cruise liner but admits crashing ship into rocks

The cruise liner captain accused of abandoning ship after he struck rocks off the Tuscan coast last Friday has reportedly claimed he was unable to lead the evacuation because he slipped and tripped into a lifeboat while helping passengers leave the stricken vessel.

During a three-hour hearing on Tuesday, captain Francesco Schettino said it was an accident that he left the Costa Concordia, according to La Repubblica.

"The passengers were pouring on to the decks, taking the lifeboats by assault," the newspaper quoted him as telling a judge during a hearing to determine whether he should be held in custody on charges of manslaughter and abandoning ship.

"I didn't even have a life jacket because I had given it to one of the passengers. I was trying to get people to get into the boats in an orderly fashion. Suddenly, since the ship was at a 60-70° angle, I tripped and I ended up in one of the boats. That's how I found myself in the lifeboat," said Schettino.

"Suspended there, I was unable to lower the boat into the sea, because the space was blocked by other boats in the water."

The captain did however admit responsibility for crashing the ship into rocks which tore a hole in the Costa Concordia, forcing him to ground the vessel.

"I made a mistake on the approach," he said.

"I was navigating by sight because I knew the depths well and I had done this manoeuvre three or four times. But this time I ordered the turn too late and I ended up in water that was too shallow. I don't know why it happened. I was a victim of my instincts."

Schettino confirmed he sailed close to the island of Giglio to salute a retired captain, Mario Palombo, and was on the phone to Palombo at the time.

Schettino said he was not afraid of a drugs test: "I don't do drugs and I had not drunk." By grounding the vessel close to the shore after it struck rock he believes he saved the lives of many passengers.

On Wednesday, a Dutch-owned salvage vessel arrived in Giglio port ready to go into action once divers resume their search for passengers on board. The brother of an Indian waiter who worked on the cruise ship and who was still missing arrived on Giglio on Wednesday to search for him.

Emergency workers and divers are still searching for survivors on board the Costa Concordia, the 114,000-tonne cruise ship lying on its side half-submerged off the coast of Tuscany after it collided with rocks on Friday.

If something like this had been arranged for me I'd pay an enormous amount of money NOT to go on a cruise like that. It's basically a ghastly block of flats perched on a hull. In the company of over 4000 people!
I travel on the Stena line to Harwich quite frequently, much more civilized than flying, lovely cabin, overnight so you don't lose any time at all, no queue at the border, train waiting, leaving Hoek of Holland at 10 in the evening (take as much luggage as you like), watch tv in cabin, shower, bed, next morning, breakfast, at 9.00 a.m. you're in the middle of London in Liverpool street. No stress, can't beat it.
Got distracted there! They have very clear emergency procedures even for the one night crossing. Although of course no muster, but each passenger is issued with instructions, in the huts they posted on the doors and so on.

how fortunate for him that he didn't trip headlong into the sea..... shame the passengers who had to dive off the ship didn't have the same good luck in where they landed and had to swim for their lives to shore..

Lloyds List have tracking information of the ships voyages and last year the ship got even closer to the island than it did on Friday:

Exclusive analysis of Lloyd's List Intelligence vessel tracking data shows that Costa Concordia sailed within 230 m of the coast of Giglio Island on a previous voyage, even closer to shore than where it hit rocks last Friday.

Lloyd's List has uncovered new evidence which indicates that last Friday's Costa Concordia disaster may not be a black and white case of shipmaster error.

The cruise ship, which capsized off the Italian coast, had previously changed course to get closer to Giglio on the night of August 14 last year, owners Costa Cruises have said. The company's CEO, Pier Luigi Foschi, stressed the decision was taken under the authorisation of the local maritime authority and the permission of Costa after the route was reviewed. In a news conference on Monday, he claimed that the vessel was never closer than 500 metres from the coast at any point in that voyage.

Did they hire Clarence because his previous position got him fully accustomed to the art of dealing with sinking ships?

I'll get my coat.

What is certain is that since the start of the investigation there were  incongruent and even contradictory situations concerning the witness statements; the telephone records of calls that were made and received on mobile phones that belonged to the couple and to the group of friends that were on holidays with them; the movements of people right after the disappearance of the little girl was noticed, concerning the state in which the bedroom from where the child disappeared from was found (closed window? open window? partially open window?) etc., and the mystery would only become even thicker due to the clues that were left by the already mentioned sniffer dogs. - The Words of a JUDGE in relation to the McCanns

No. Snake mitchell is regarded as the master of spin, lies and corruption. Someone who would sell his soul and mother. For a little boy from Frien Barnet who fell asleep at 3am during a BBC broadcast, if this is what the powers of the country think is the best then god help us. The guy is a total twat but conforms and this is what matters to them. Someone who is intelligent & honest and has values of what this country is about, respects it, is of no use. This is the blunt truth of it
