FORMER Portuguese police co-ordinator Goncalo Amaral has issued a plea for Kate McCann to "tell the truth" and spoken of his delight at having his freedom of speech returned.

Speaking exclusively to mccannfiles.com on the eve of the publication of Mrs McCanns' book about missing daughter Madeleine, Mr Amaral said he was surprised at Kate's claim that she was writing her book "to give an account of the truth."

"It is strange to hear the word 'truth' from the mouth of someone who didn't cooperate with the police when the investigation was open," he said.

"And it was not any investigation; it was about finding what caused the mysterious disappearance of her daughter, and the enormous effort to recover her."

Mr Amaral believes the McCanns have "the right to be able to write what they like about the case" and supports the fact that Kate "is using her freedom of speech". Something recently denied him.

"A book that is written by someone who was a suspect may become of use as a document, maybe even a piece of documental evidence. Let us wait," he added.

Mr Amaral, whose bestselling book The Truth of the Lie was the subject of costly legal action by the McCanns, said he "felt like a free man" when the injunction on his book was overturned by the Appeals Court in October last year. "The McCanns also felt free because they decided to write a book," he observed.

The McCanns, who failed in their recent appeal to Portugal's Supreme Court to reimpose the ban, must now return all seized copies of the book, currently placed with their lawyer, Isabel Duarte, or risk incurring a criminal charge of disobedience.

"Legality has been re-established," said Goncalo Amaral. "The McCanns have just lost one more judicial action that was paid for with money from a fund that they say is for recovering their daughter.

"Both her and her husband were, and still are, more concerned with defending their image than in finding out what caused the child's mysterious disappearance."

An English language version of Goncalo Amaral's book is yet to be released but he said: "After the McCanns' book is published, there is no reason whatsoever for The Truth of the Lie not to be published in the UK. The British people are entitled to know all of the facts."

Mr Amaral believes that the process will be reopened and "the material truth will be known" and is dismissive of the McCanns' petition for a review of the case.

"That is one of the misunderstandings that are created by the McCanns," he said, "they do not want the case to be reviewed, they merely want a review of the information that has been added after the shelving (sightings of the child).

"If they wanted the case to be reviewed, they would ask for the crime process and the investigation to be reopened, and they would supply all of the reports from the various private detectives that they have hired.

"To ask for the process to be reopened, all it would take is a letter to the Prosecutor, as it has already happened in so many other cases. It costs them nothing, just the stamp on the letter."

If the process were reopened, Mr Amaral believes there are "several" diligences which could be carried out to help discover the truth.

"There will always be diligences that will result from reviewing the investigation and the reports from the McCanns' private detectives. Those diligences will have to take the conclusions that the Police had reached in September of 2007 into account.

"That is the starting point, but in the end it could happen that those conclusions are not confirmed. What is necessary is to complete an investigation that was suddenly interrupted due to the will of the parents of a child that has disappeared mysteriously."

Mr Amaral has no doubts about which action would have to be undertaken immediately to help unearth the truth of what happened to Madeleine.

"The first diligence, after the review, will have to be the reconstruction of that night of the 3rd of May, 2007."

In a letter to kate 2010 sofia says kate is starting to tell some truths does anyone know what truths ?

What I can't understand is why so many people would be involved.

Why would they help in a cover up and maybe a financial scam(Fund). The consequences for themselves are serious if someone in the cover up finally talks.

Yes, I spent a lot of time wondering this, Pauline. If you turn it around, why would 8 seemingly intelligent caring parents, 6 of whom are doctors, feel so relaxed about leaving their children alone and unsupervised for 3 hours every night while they dine at the tapas? When you consider that the child monitoring service had been withdrawn from that site by Mark Warner? They are a big group, they can dine easily enough at any of the apartments/patios? What made all of the children such marvellous sleepers suddenly? What made the parents so confident suddenly? My guess is they were afraid if things weren't covered perhaps all of the children might be drug tested. I doubt very much if it was about saving one career.

This was interesting and oddly enough never mentioned by the McCanns. Paulo Rebelo and his words' the investigation is still pointing in the right direction' and a missing child......I think he threw out a fishing line and received a great response from Mitchell. Rebelo read the files and realized each evening an adult was sick, someone always missing from the group of nine...the babysitter, also realizing at the same time there was no neglect.
The eighth child, Madeleine, did he also suspect she may have died before May 3rd ?....Rebelos report and what he discovered as yet unknown....

The babysitters...one sat each evening with the children ,just as Paulo Rebelo had suspected , the children were all together, the issue of neglect had been removed....AND now understanding why it was impossible for the tapas to return for a reconstruction , they were truly afraid !

Well they were right about one thing, they do have the British Goverment by the balls. But they were wrong on all counts when it came to the mood of the British public and there being a riot. The McCanns have never understood how much they are disliked, they sincerely believe because they have 'contacts' who are little more than crooks they are above the law. Brian Kennedy , has betrayed many an innocent customer through his double glazing business. Metodo 3 ,two of whom are still in prison, one up on an attempted murder charge the other for drug trafficking. Not to mention Kevin Halligen. The McCanns themselves criminals of a massive fraud if you believe as I do, and there is no doubt in my mind that Madeleine is dead and they are involved.


There was not a riot as Kate McCann had hoped for because what the McCanns will never understand is that the majority do not believe them and never will. Their pathetic attempts at using the media to clear their names has failed, the results being a deep hatred and distrust for the British media. Martin Brunt and David Jones are despised and have lost all credibility as journalists , they turned their backs on what they were paid to do, their job and that job is to dig for the truth.

The moment the McCanns arrived back in Britain as ARGUIDOS the fund money went to pay HANOVER , there was no search for Madeleine, pretty pointless as she was already dead . HANOVER, proud to admit they turned the British hostility for the McCanns to sympathy.

Two days later after the ARGUIDOS returned, Gordon Brown and Jaqui Smith paid a visit to Leicester police station and what did they discuss? who knows, who cares BUT we can be sure Madeleines name was not mentioned , this was all about the McCanns and protecting their reputation and his of course!

During a more relaxed moment at one of these meetings, I come out with an ill-judged comment. Inopportune or undiplomatic, but this is my reasoning: thinking about the kinds of crime that may have been committed if the McCanns were involved in their daughter's disappearance, something occurs to me. If they were involved in one way or another, then a crime of fraud or abuse of trust is a possibility concerning the fund that was set up to finance the search for Madeleine. Donations have reached nearly 3 million Euros.

If such a crime exists, Portugal would not have jurisdiction to investigate and try it. The fund being legally registered in England, it would be our English colleagues who would deal with the case. Our English colleagues then realise a hard reality: the strong possibility that they would have a crime to investigate in their own country, with the McCann couple as the main suspects: a prospect that does not seem to appeal to them. I notice a sudden pallor in the faces of those British people present.

Who was babysitting on Thursday?

this 'sickness' is most unusual. Have often holidayed in portugal. Never got sick. You can get sick on holiday in places like Tunisia where they don't wash the salads properly.

These 'doctors' not being able to stay healthy on holiday is most odd. Maybe it was the hangovers from all the wine. on another discussion thread we have seen they had 14 bottles of wine on May 3rd as the tapas bill was posted.

Was that their normal consumption does anyone know?

In the truthful book (p.220) Kate says the media were turning out speculative and fabricated pieces and she cites one such fabrication was that ' we drank 14 bottles of wine the night that Madeleine was abducted.'
