I've been given the book (had it a while now) and just can't bring myself to open it. I just have the feeling it will p*ss me off too much. Plus, I already know that it contains nothing new or interesting. The revelation about the hiccup in the McCanns - ahem - love life sent a shock wave of revulsion that is still causing aftershocks several months down the line. Especially remembering that rather unflattering photo of Gerry with his mouth hanging open and his ears sticking out (you know the one!), well, that was my nightmares sorted out for the next year!

smoke and mirrors

Post by russiandoll on 11.10.11 17:13

I borrowed it from my local library as I wanted to balance out the reading I had done on mccann files and while it nauseated me and made me very angry I found it very interesting, mainly for what is omitted.

The library staff interestingly said they all wanted to read it as they thought the mccann case stank to high heaven......I told them the book would not do anything to take away the stench.

@Ollie wrote:And I still wouldn't buy it for a quid. It is nauseating just reading excerpts on this forum. If the majority of money was paying for a genuine search, with genuine investigators then I would of bought it...for Madeleine. But I don't believe most of the money is being used for this purpose.

I just bought it cause I wanted to have it available to look up stuff, I have Amarals book too and I can compare the two, sometimes they both "explain" the same from different angles... Plus just by using Kates own book you can expose her, which is even more interesting!

Really? Maybe we should send them a complimentary copy of The Madeleine McCann case files. Whats the address?

You don't have to buy it. It is available for nothing on the internet, about 12 pages deep into Google, in various formats.
Of course to download it would be a breach of copyright, so you mustn't.

One of the big problems today is that "celebrity" books (so-called autobiographies often written by ghost writers) appear to be among the biggest selling books in bookshops, but the way this book has gone into freefall down the charts would indicate a dwindling interest and possibly sales. Maybe a better "marketing ploy" would have been to publish a year or two earlier when the case was fresher in the mind. Public perception and attention spans being shorter makes for news events to disappear from people's radar a lot quicker these days. However, who am I to suggest tactics to the two wise ones from Rothley Towers. Ah, sorry my main point. I feel the book itself does nothing to assist the search and evrything to try to make the good ? doctor seem like one of the "ordinary2 people, but it is all superficial claptrap.
I was trained to read books in a certain way. Who is the author/ what is their stance? or agenda? What can I glean from an introduction/ What is the content? How is it written? factually or emotionally? To me, the book seems designed to pull at the heartstrings of people in a certain audience whilst at the same time attempting to show the author's supposed sense of "reality" (f*****g T*****r, for the dog handler, who does not deserve apparently the author's respect, etc etc). I have a friend in this line of work, I would certainly give him respect, his job is one deserving of it. This book is a cynical book, and designed to rake in the £££££s.

And today, you can get one for £ 4.
Amazon 11/11/11
Madeleine by Kate McCann (Hardcover - 12 May 2011)
Buy new: £20.00 £9.00
46 new from £8.98 29 used from £4.00

You can also download it from the internet for nothing if you go deeply enough into google.
You get several formats, including the one for kindle.
That probably breaches copyright laws, so of course you must not do so; and I will not tell you where you must not look, unless you ask.

There is no doubt of that.

A minor point - it was to Ricardo Pavia that she was referring with the "f ing t sser" comment, not Martin Grime.

Or just download it free from the internet, like everyone else does.
It will be interesting to see if they include a separate column in the Company account for royalties from the sale of the book.

I bet all the used ones being sold off cheap on Amazon, are ones returned from all the bookshops that people have flicked through and put straight back on the shelves.

The paperback launch may be a bit of a challenge then. I don't know anything about publishing but I imagine there are an awful lot of printed books ready to go. It's going to be interesting to see the promotion.
