We're in a "how long is a piece of string" scenario with the "when he is well enough and when his safety can be guaranteed" statement.

#Dewani case will be reconsidered at further hearing. Judges say it is 'in the interests of justice' that he be extradited when fit.

I'm not surprised by this at all. He's not the first man to have claimed to have 'carnal knowledge' of Mr Dewani is he?
The saddest thing in all this for me, apart from the needless death of an absolutely stunning young woman, is that there are still so many people who feel they have to live a lie. So many cultures where its more acceptable to be a violent rapist than to be gay... Now that IS sad. Truly heartbreaking.
We need more tolerance.
Such a waste of a beautiful young woman - and a young man's life wrecked - because he couldn't just be himself. (Not making excuses for murder, btw)

Frankly, this doesn't surprise me at all. This 'aide' isn't the first man to come forward and claim 'carnal knowledge' of Mr Dewani is he?
What I find most sad about this, not including the needless death of an absolutely stunning young woman, is how many people still feel they have to live a lie.
How many cultures where it is more acceptable to be a violent rapist than to be gay - that is heartbreaking. Not making excuses for murder in any way, but the odds are that lovely Anni would still be here had Shrien felt he could be 'himself'.
More tolerance is needed in this world. IMO.

Certainly agree with you there Rainbow-Fairy and, where I came from, even being straight was a problem! By the way the writer (I use the word loosely) of this article was also behind the absolute classic about burglars leaving markings on houses.

I am wondering who this senior parliamentary figure is, no wonder the extradition is being held up, there is a bomb ready to go off thinking

A different story from the Sun today.......

Sun’s Dewani tape is handed to cops

Exclusive

By NICK PARKER, Chief Foreign Correspondent

Published: Today at 01:19

A TAPE of a dramatic Sun interview with honeymoon murder suspect Shrien Dewani has been handed to police.

He has given only one detailed account of his wife Anni's final hours — to us, eight days after her brutal carjacking death.

South African cops have now asked for the 90-minute recording to investigate inconsistencies in his story.

Care home boss Dewani, 32, told The Sun two gun-toting robbers PUSHED him out of the rear passenger window in Cape Town before driving off.

But police say the VW Sharan taxi had child-proof windows which open only 13 inches. They say he told them he was PULLED out of the car.

In The Sun's recording he said: "He (one gunman) eventually just forced me out of the window — it was the back passenger window."

A source close to the case said the small window gap "would seriously impede anyone getting through".

Dewani, from Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol, has always denied plotting Anni's murder. On Friday High Court judges halted his extradition to South Africa because of his mental state. A taxi driver claims Dewani paid him for the "hit".

Two accused gunmen await trial.

I like the bit about his recovery being endangered by his "constant awareness of the court proceedings".

Yep, every time the date approaches, he will take a turn for the worse.

One of the South Africa suspects has today been sentenced to 25 years in jail after pleading guilty to Anni's murder.

http://www.sowetanlive.co.za/news/2012/08/08/dewani-killer-gets-25-years

Some will remember that this is one of two suspects who alleged police brutality which he claims forced him to initially confess. Today, we hear his lawyer claims his client signed a plea agreement. This is a massive blow to Dewani's extradition stalling I hope.

Dewani honeymoon murder: South African jailed

A South African taxi driver says Shrien Dewani paid him to kill his new bride

Related Stories

A South African man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for murdering Swedish woman Anni Dewani during her 2010 honeymoon in Cape Town.

Mziwamadoda Qwabe says he and Mrs Dewani's British husband Shrien Dewani shot her dead.

A South African taxi driver has already accused Mr Dewani of asking him to organise his bride's murder.

Mr Dewani denies plotting to kill his wife. A British court has halted his extradition, citing his mental health.

According to a court document, Qwabe admitted stealing jewellery - including a white gold and diamond bracelet and a Georgio Armani watch - from Mrs Dewani, 28, before killing her.

He said the murder had been organised by Shrien Dewani, 32, and taxi driver Zola Tongo and Xolile Mngeni had also taken part.

Mr Mngeni has a malignant brain tumour that has stopped him going on trial.

Defence lawyer Daniel Theunissen told the high court in Cape Town that Qwabe had agreed to plead guilty to kidnapping, robbery, murder and illegal possession of a firearm.

Prosecutor Eric Ntbazalila welcomed Qwabe's admission.

"It's a positive step for the prosecution because we are now a step closer to getting information on what happened on that day, which will shed some light on the role played by Shrien Dewani," he is quoted by the AFP news agency as saying.

In March, the High Court in London temporarily halted Mr Dewani's extradition. He has been diagnosed as suffering from severe post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.

His lawyers want proceedings to be halted for a year to give him time to recover.

The case in the UK is due to resume in September.

Mr Dewani owns a care home in Bristol, in the west of England, where the couple lived before Mrs Dewani was killed.

Mrs Dewani's uncle Ashok Hindocha said her family was happy with Qwabe's plea but still wanted to know why she was killed.

"The way we feel is that we are going through legal torture. It is extremely stressful for the family," he said.

Shortly after the murder in November 2010, Tongo confessed to killing Mrs Dewani.

Tongo said Mr Dewani offered him about $2,100 (£1,340) to arrange the killing and make it look like a carjacking.

He was sentenced to 18 years in prison following a plea bargain.

Mr Dewani faces charges of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and obstructing the administration of justice.

Secret links of Dewani shrinks

PSYCHIATRISTS from opposing sides who helped the husband of murdered bride Anni Dewani stave off extradition were business partners, it emerged yesterday.
Professor Michael Kopelman was hired by prosecutors to assess the mental state of Shrien Dewani — wanted in South Africa on a charge of plotting Anni’s killing.
Dewani, 32, in turn hired Professor Nigel Eastman to provide another opinion for his defence.
The experts issued a joint statement in which Prof Eastman agreed with Prof Kopelman that Dewani had depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Their evidence last July persuaded the High Court in London to suspend the extradition of Dewani on the basis that he was too ill to plead.
But what Prof Kopelman did not tell the court was that he and Prof Eastman became business partners 13 days before making their joint statement. There is no suggestion their joint testimony was in any way altered or tainted by the business link, or that either in any way misled the court in giving their opinion. thinking
The Crown Prosecution Service, which is acting on behalf of the South African government in the extradition process, confirmed to The Sun that its lawyers were never told of the link.

Prosecutors were last night urgently considering their response.
And the angry family of Swedish-born Anni, 28, last night demanded an inquiry, concerned that the business link could raise issues of an apparent conflict of interest.
Anni’s uncle Ashok Hindocha stormed: “What the hell is going on? All we want is justice.”
Anni was shot dead while on honeymoon in South Africa with Dewani. The murder in Cape Town in 2010 was allegedly staged to look like a bungled kidnapping.
Hitman Mziwamadoda Qwabe, 27, was sentenced to 25 years this month. He said he carried out the execution with Xolile Mngeni, 23, on the orders of care-home tycoon Dewani, of Bristol.
Taxi driver Zola Tongo, 32, drove the newlyweds to the spot where Dewani was bundled from the car before his wife was shot in the neck. Qwabe and Tongo implicated Dewani in plea bargains.

Dewani insists he is innocent. He opposed extradition, claiming he could contract HIV by being raped in South African prisons and mental illness made him unfit to plead.
The two psychiatrists hired had set up Forensic Psychiatry Chambers and registered themselves as joint directors with six others.
A General Medical Council source said it was usual for expert witnesses from the same organisation to inform the court, to ensure no concerns over potential conflicts of interest. The source added: “It would have been sensible to have sought an unrelated person’s opinion.”
Prof Kopelman, 62, would not comment on the case. Prof Eastman, 67, said: “Any expert opinion I provide continues to be independent.
“My only duty is to the court, which is not affected by my membership of a medical chambers.”
Dewani’s extradition had been approved but was temporarily halted in March on mental health grounds. He is said to need a year to recover. A hearing is set for September 18

Gosh! That reminds me. The International Family Law Group, the very group of lawyers who absolved the McCanns and told them their parenting was well within reasonable bounds, was set up about 5 weeks before the holiday.

But apparently they had advertised their services so efficiently that the McCanns heard about them within days of 3/5 through a Leicester based 'friend'. One of the lawyers who did work for them immediately after 3/5, left this group after just a few months. He too, was Leicester based.

Dewani and the McCanns do seem to be lucky to lay their hands on the right experts at the right time.

Tigger, I thought it was never clarified exactly who declared that the McCanns actions were well within the boundaries of responsible parenting.

As for Dewani, well people on this forum know my views on South Africa. Life is cheap there. You can hire someone to murder for a pittance. It is the level of violence that is so shocking in most South African crime. Rape, slitting a throat, a bullet in the head, a plastic bag over the head, branding with an iron, boiling water are so common. Hacking people with pangas (machete like things) = normal. Dewani was certainly in a position to offer money to do his bidding. It's not the norm to let the man go in such a crime - he could identify them. It's unlikely unpaid killers would shove a tourist out of the car window and speed off. What IS likely is the killers were paid (and I'm not saying Dewani paid them) but they were paid with instructions not to harm the man. Life means nothing to these people. It doesn't matter who they kill. It's a job to them and they do it under instruction from a paymaster.

I've followed the Dewani case from South Africa and it seems incredible that a taxi driver would take them at his suggestion to Gugulethu - hell on earth. Hardly a tourist attraction and definitely not a drive through on your way to somewhere else.

Does Dewani face imminent extradition?

Shrien Dewani’s mental health has improved, but his lawyers want to halt the extradition procedure for a year to allow him enough time to recover.

By Staff Reporter on 21 September, 2012 10:01 am

Shrien Dewani is being moved to an open rehabilitation ward after his mental health has improved, reported the BBC. Dewani had been diagnosed with severe post-traumatic stress disorder and depression, which has been re-categorised from severe to moderate.

A new hearing to review medical reports was due to take place this week but the reports, by a psychiatrist employed by the South African authorities, were not ready. The hearing is now due to take place on 12 October. Clare Montgomery QC, of Dewani’s legal team, has asked for the extradition proceedings to be delayed for 12 months to allow him to recover.

Dewani’s extradition was originally ordered in August 2011, but was halted after High Court judges ruled that it would be “unjust and oppressive” to extradite him until his condition had improved.

Anni Dewani’s father, Vinod Hindocha, told the BBC that the continual prolonging of the case was “torturing us every day”. “I am here again today with still no real hope of me knowing the full story of why Anni was murdered,” he said. “The UK police have arrested him and the South African police want him back as a prime suspect, yet still he remains here. Why? I ask how long can post-traumatic stress last? As far as I’m concerned the South Africans have proved to me that they will treat him fairly and put the case against him properly.” “It’s now time for the British judges to take the decision to send him back immediately and allow me as a grieving father and my family to be told all the facts. We have a right to that,” he continued.

Meanwhile Xolile Mgeni is the last man standing in the trial. A witness from Khayelitsha, who can’t be named for his own safety, said earlier this month that he saw Mngeni with Mziwamadoda Qwabe – who was operating as a hitman under the pseudonym ‘Abongile’ – and Zola Tonga in a VW Sharan shortly before Anni was murdered. Qwabe and Tongo have confessed to their part in the murder and are now serving prison sentences of 25 and 18 years respectively. The defence for Xolile Mngeni, who is currently recovering from surgery to remove a malignant brain tumour, has alleged that Mngeni was assaulted by the police, with the insinuation that he may have been coerced into making a confession.
