Re: Honeymoon Murder: Husband Shrien Dewani Is Arrested

South Africa has a problem with UK agreeing to extradition imo. Prison conditions in South Africa are horrendous. Rape is a very common in-mate punishment. There's also racial rape attacks. If Oscar Pistorius is granted bail then Shrien Dewani must surely command the same status and be assured of safety whilst on bail.

If Dewani is found guilty will he be expected to serve his sentence in dangerous and inhumane jail conditions? Does the UK give up one of its subjects to these conditions or risk a diplomatic problem doing a deal to allow Dewani to serve a prison sentence in UK?

Here is an article written in April 2012 in Metro News

Businessman tells of South African prison rape that left him HIV positive

At last!!

Honeymoon murder suspect Shrien Dewani faces extradition

Mr Dewani has undergone treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder and depression

Honeymoon murder suspect Shrien Dewani will be extradited to South Africa to face trial over his wife Anni's death.
Mr Dewani, from Bristol, is accused of plotting to kill his wife, 28, who was shot in the head on the outskirts of Cape Town in November 2010.

Chief magistrate Howard Riddle ruled at Westminster Magistrates' Court that Mr Dewani should return to the country.
In a statement, Mr Dewani's family said his lawyers would be lodging an appeal.

District Judge Riddle said: "It is not in question that Shrien Dewani will be returned to South Africa. The treating clinicians continue to state that Mr Dewani will recover.

"There has been recovery, but it has been slow. It may be a long time before Mr Dewani is fit to plead, but he may be closer to that point.
"It is not impossible that if returned now, then after a reasonable period of further treatment and assessment he will be found fit to plead and a trial can take place."

'Committed to returning'
Mr Dewani, a 33-year-old former businessman, has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and depression and is receiving treatment at a hospital near Bristol.

His defence team had argued that he could suffer setbacks in his mental health if sent back now, and that the decision should be delayed.
A spokesman for his family said lawyers would review the judgment and lodge an appeal, during which time Mr Dewani would remain in the UK.

"Shrien Dewani remains unfit to be extradited or to face trial," said the spokesman.

"Shrien remains committed to returning to South Africa when his health would permit a full trial and when appropriate protections are in place for his health and safety.

"The legal process is ongoing so it would be inappropriate to comment further."

Note the ominous words though that his lawyers will be lodging an appeal. I imagine that this will drag on until the cows come home.

Perhaps someone should tell him that if he goes to jail he'll have lots of nice boyfriends?

Isn't it ironic, the wealthier a person is, the more "innocent" they are

Hmmm - I'm not feeling too optimistic as it's presented by Jeremy Vine (remember him and his charmless guest Nina Myscow talking about the McCanns?) as he had another programme last year about this case.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01f6qvw

It isn't still available to watch but I remember JV saying that he didn't think SD looked like a man who'd killed his wife.

He certainly hasn't acted like an innocent man since.

JV seems to be making a habit of ignoring the most likely culprits.

A team from BBC series Panorama has obtained police files concerning the prosecution case against Shrien Dewani and has asked forensic experts to examine them.
A BBC spokesman said the experts' findings have exposed "fundamental failings" in the police investigation, and it is in the public interest for them to be aired.
The programme is due to be broadcast next Thursday.

Hmmm, criticizing a police force, where have I heard that before.  On this Thursday 19th Sept @ 9 pm

Sorry, tried to post before, but was denied access to the forum. Interested in Jeremy Vines interpretion of the information from the CCTV cameras. Did SD know where there was cctv in the hotel? Seen laughing with Anni in the hotel reception in front of the cameras. Met with the Taxi driver in a room with no CCTV. Convenient, planned or coincindental with no significance whatever?

His lawyers have previously claimed that he would be a high suicide risk if extradited and that his human rights could be violated, due to the risk of attack and sexual assault, in a South African prison.
No surprise that his human rights been given special treatment, an overriding factor, over that of the victim.

When are people going to learn ? The delay is only going to be just a waste of time, resources and money. In the finished he has to be yielded up to face the consequences.

Otherwise, he's going to have to develop a few more round of bouts of depression and either resigned himself to be incarcerated in a mental hospital or be prepared to go back. Without doubt he's going to role play the mentally sick-man and hope he outwit the systems. It's not bad spending time at the mental hospital because so far he's been allowed to go home at pre-arranged allocated time and he's allowed visitation rights. He even said the hospital is a 3-star hotel.

It would be irony if the prolonged stay in the mental hospital turns the sane man into an insane one.

I haven't plucked up courage to watch it yet. The combination of Jeremy Vine and his previous programme on the subject is very off-putting.

I didn't see the Jeremy Vine programme but I watched the documentary and having experienced South African gun crime I really don't know what to make of any of it. Almost every two minutes I was changing my mind. All I know is that you can hire idiots for peanuts to commit a crime in South Africa. The killers all did deals. It's not the CCTV of Shrien Dewani in the hotel that's needed imo. It's also the videos of the killers being interviewed by the South African police that would be the most telling and would give a balanced view.

The documentary was thought provoking but that's about it.

Both the programmes featured Jeremy Vine, Aquila.

I have tried not to be influenced by his comments on the McCanns but, like Donal MacIntyre, he has permanently damaged his reputation.

The evidence against Shrien Dewani does seem to be circumstantial, I agree but he has not acted like an innocent man since then. Let's hope that he faces trial soon but I suspect that he will carry on with the mentally ill charade for years.

No surprise that his family was happy with the programme.

Shrien Dewani loses High Court extradition case

Shrien and Anni Dewani married in a lavish Hindu ceremony in Mumbai in India in October 2010, two weeks before her death

Shrien Dewani, who is accused of organising the murder of his wife Anni in South Africa, can be extradited to the country, the High Court has ruled.
Lawyers for Mr Dewani, who has post-traumatic stress disorder, argued he should not be sent there until he was fit to plead over the 2010 killing.
But judges ruled he can be extradited as long as the South African government pledges to return him to the UK should he ultimately prove unfit to be tried.
Mr Dewani is currently in hospital.
Speaking outside the High Court in London, BBC correspondent Angus Crawford said the South African authorities had indicated they were minded to accept the court's conditions for extradition.
He said Mr Dewani's family could yet lodge an appeal at the UK Supreme Court, which would continue to delay any extradition.
A lawyer for the South African government said it was "delighted" with the court's ruling, and expected it would be able to give the necessary undertakings, but needed 14 days for "final clarification".
Taxi kidnapping
Mr Dewani, from Bristol, has been fighting removal from the UK to face proceedings over his new wife Anni's death until he has recovered from his mental health problems.
He is suspected of ordering the killing of Anni, a Swedish national.
The pair were kidnapped at gunpoint as they drove through the Gugulethu township in Cape Town in a taxi in November 2010. Mr Dewani was released unharmed.
The next day the body of Mrs Dewani was found in the car. She had injuries to her head and chest.
South African Xolile Mngeni was later convicted of premeditated murder and jailed for life. Prosecutors allege he was hired by Mr Dewani to kill his wife.
Mr Dewani, who has always denied the accusation, has been fighting efforts to secure his extradition ever since it was first ordered by a senior district judge in 2011.

Have I missed something, I don't get this. Guilty? Under what evidence?

Oh wait, of course he doesn't get the same good treatment the MCCANNS got.
Silly me, because he is NOT the mccanns.
