I tend to think the "fridge" story has become very convoluted over time.

The first reference to a fridge was via Gerry's blog and an English-language Portuguese ex-pat newspaper (which ran a story which contained the comments from the landlord concerning Gerry's removal of said fridge). Sadly both of these have long since disappeared however if you refer to the Helicopter link there is some discussion there. It's not a forum myth.

The fridge in question was not in 5A. It was in one of the subsequent places that the McCanns moved to. I can't recall which place exactly, but they moved 3 or 4 times, first to another apartment in the OC complex, and then to at least two more villas.

The Portuguese police theory about the fridge in the Sun article may be based on knowledge about the fridge that Gerry threw out, or it may be based on other knowledge. In any case, the first mention of the fridge was in Gerry's blog (now whooshed) and the comments by the landlord in the Portuguese ex-pat newspaper (also now long gone).

I've spent a few evenings trying to find a newspaper article for around day 26 that I'm sure was in the sun that mentioned "in his latest blog mr mccann met workers at a local dump who were supportive" (words to that effect.

The fridge and the drunk guy that K and G helped home sound similar track covering exercises. He blogged about the fridge as someone must have seen him at the dump.
Keep digging Shhh this would be very incriminating evidence.

I did an unsuccessful search for that statement but I think it's fair to say that if the PJ knew about those trips to an apartment, they also knew which apartment was...

 Ayniia and Bobbin,

Unless the PJ received a vague anonymous call saying that they had been seen going to a pink building? Maybe from someone a few months after they returned home?

I have read about that building only this morning it was on the McCannFiles, here you are, a little way down and point number 5.  http://www.mccannfiles.com/id167.html

Thank you very much Nina. So yes they knew which apartment block it was.
" 5. With regard to the possible sighting of arguido Gerry McCann next to a pink coloured block of apartments at a site opposite the Luz cemetery, we can inform you that this an establishment called "St James Portuguesa Lda"."

I thought these posts from earlier in the thread are a good reminder about this apartment that GA referred to. It is also worth remembering the story in Exhibit KH1 about GM and KH finding the drunk in the road and escorting him to an apartment. As we've all discovered, there is always a reason for an iffy story. In this case a cover for entering a strange apartment block, maybe.

MO's words also stuck in my head. This from his rog about searching that night:

"..........  erm, and so we ran out on that, I think this road unfortunately is called, erm, which road is it, Cemetery Road I think it's called, I seem to remember noticing it because it seemed like a horrible, I think it’s this bit here".     ( A horrible what, I wonder. He doesn't enlarge on it)

4078 "It covers quite a lot of area".

Reply "You're basically out on, I think this is Cemetery Road or one of these roads and it just takes you out down the coast and there's lots of new build sort of resorts going up
".
---------------------

I street googled Cemetery Road (Rua do cemiterio) some time back and I was surprised that the street sign was so small. It being dark, and he being in rush-round-in-headless-chicken-mode, I was  amazed he noticed it, let alone recalled it a year later at Leicester. The street google also showed a big dumpster at the entrance to the cemetery.

Interesting - as when you're out and about on a nice holiday - seeing a street called Cemetery road wouldn't bother you in the slightest.  It is a perfectly common  name for a road which has a cemetery on it and wouldn't conjure up horrible feelings unless perhaps a death had already occurred.  He is a doctor for goodness sake - people die - what he says is ridiculous.
It makes me think that death must've already occurred or else he wouldn't bat an eyelid at a Cemetery Road sign.
Mind you, his statements are full of absurd pathetic drivel.

I think he may well have seen this road when he was out on his , it's-quite-nice-when-you're-exploring-a-bit, run with KH the day before. He seemed to have a wide-ranging knowledge of what buildings were going up a bit further down on the coast road too. Remember, he estimated his run as 3 to 4 miles each way - a helluva long run for someone who doesn't like running. (Funny how he turned out for his least favourite sport again last Sunday at Clapham.)
That night he was out searching for MBM and in a somewhat febrile state by his own admission due to the events. As I say, the road sign is low down on a wall and really small. I can't believe his headless chicken style search would have pre-disposed him towards peering at the sign and it would probably have been difficult to see in the dark too. All my own opinion of course.

Welcome to the forum by the way Anon.

Well I've no idea about the background to this but - early morning mid summer...not that difficult perhaps. Not many people about.  Depends if you have a garage perhaps. Car in garage. Fridge in car. Car to local dump. Dump fridge. I doubt any one would dispose of a body in the fridge. But a fridge with forensic evidence would look no different to any other fridge.

The full article is here: http://www.gerrymccannsblogs.co.uk/press/5sep7/SUN-29-09-07.htm

The only other reference to a fridge that I can find is in DPs rogatory where he says "Err the, I know that again, you know Kate and Gerry had had problems err with I think it was the blinds in their flat and the fridge" http://www.mccannpjfiles.co.uk/PJ/DAVID-PAYNE-ROGATORY.htm

Neither "fridge" nor "refrigerator" appear in Gerry's blogs http://gerrymccannsblogs.info/ so I suspect Gerry disposing of a fridge is a forum myth

If a car driver pulled up in my local area where i lived and asked could you point me in the direction of so and so street, drive, avenue etc etc i could probably say yes, go straight on then turn left then first right etc etc..Now if i was abroad for one week i wouldn't give a street sign a second though' why would i.it's probably in foreign anyway..if has MO said it was called cemetery road it must have been written not only in English but many other foreign languages for other foreign tourists to know it was called cemetery road..and why would it be horrible?

Looking for mention of the fridge is easy but proof is another thing.  It. Has to be saved somewhere.

My search has taken me to the mccann-healey funeral home. In New Jersey...

Very interesting. I also remember reading about the fridge.
I do believe it was at least referred to in a local Portuguese paper, regarding the owner being somewhat surprised that the fridge had been replaced without him being contacted, which makes me think that the newspaper /printers must have a copy.
If the PJ haven't already got that info, then the owner of the apartment may well have been spoken to by the PJ to hear his comments.
Just because Gerry may have whooshed something doesn't mean that all other things he can't get his hands on have been closed off too.
I read just recently on one of these threads that the Fridge reference was whooshed on I think it was 24th May.
I believe, but might be wrong, that the car was hired on 25th, (or was it 24th) it would be interesting to see the proper dates for this in case there is a link up connection with regard to the blog having been used as a means of coded communication to someone to get things underway/or inform others that something had been tidied up, since it might well be assumed that phones were being tapped.
Speculation aside, many people are certain that they read and saw reference to the fridge and there must be records of it, regardless of 'whooshing' as well as the various postings on fora discussing the fridge.
My own thoughts are that maybe the body was in a freezer somewhere (in line with GA's comments) and the fridge ref was possibly code and maybe the fridge was not even changed.
Did the owner know the brand of the old fridge? Did he find the fridge different or new? Where did Gerry buy this new fridge? Not many fridge shops in PdL and they would remember selling it no doubt, so until the car was hired, Gerry would have to go to a bigger town to get a fridge.
Was the fridge the same quality as the one supposedly thrown away or was it a cheaper, less reliable version?
Should Gerry not have asked the owner his opinion about what to do with the fridge since it was now broken and if a new one was going to be bought, whether the owner would want the same brand?
Fridges are biggish items, so would need adequate car space.
If delivered to a local tip, surely someone would have noticed. I would imagine in a small area, that not that many fridges turn up on a daily basis and if it's like our local tip, someone would maybe think of taking it aside to see if it could be 'repaired' and sold on.
Too many simple questions which seem to make the 'fridge to tip' story questionable, nevertheless, the info was definitely out there and those who read it will not be convinced that they didn't read about it, and think, hey, that's peculiar/shifty and start discussing it.
Just because Gerry had reference to tipping a fridge 'whooshed' does not mean that the reference did not exist nor that the readers are making stories up, it means that it was something that Gerry decided he did not want kept in the public domain.
As I say, there will be documenting somewhere, other than Gerry's whooshed blog ref.

Thanks but there are a number of people, all of whom have followed this case far longer than I have, who remember Gerry saying something about the fridge on his blog. too many for it to be a myth IMO. Has anyone tried putting the URL for Gerry's original blog into the internet time machine to see if the fridge reference has been archived there?

It is not a forum myth.

I was shocked when I read the blog entry and immediately thought it was another coded message, I strongly believe GM communicated to those in the know in this way in the Summer 2007.

Here the local white goods shop's will deliver a new fridge and take away the old one free. I had no idea how to get goods to the tip and asked my friends here, some Portuguese who lived in the area all their lives, not one had ever brought items to the tip themselves.

The comment stood out a mile and was jumped upon by reader's, thus the whooshing later.

I thought I remembered Mr Amaral referring to 'A' fridge years ago. I also thought I read somewhere of him saying "we have the fridge", but maybe that was a forum myth as that seems incredible..
Does anyone else remember this ? Sorry but memory goes with age, and it has been a long, long time..

Not sure what the time machine thing is but this sounds promising. The link above isn't his blog address but does show a screenshot where you can see the original blog url address in the top left hand corner. Will this do?
