Turning Back The Clocks 'Should Be Scrapped'

9:37am UK, Friday October 29, 2010

An end to turning the clocks back in winter would improve the health of the entire nation, according to one expert.

Scrapping clock change 'would make us happier'

British Summer Time ends on Sunday with clocks moving back an hour.
But Mayer Hillman, Senior Fellow Emeritus at the Policy Studies Institute, wants the move scrapped - although he is calling for the move forward in spring to be retained to increase daylight hours.
"It must be rare to find a means of vastly improving the health and well-being of nearly everyone in the population - and at no cost. Here we have it," he said.
"All it requires is a majority of MPs walking through the 'Ayes' lobby in the House of Commons."
Mr Hillman argues the move would increase the number of "accessible" daylight hours and encourage more outdoor exercise during the year.

Where time began: the famous Prime Meridian of the World

Research shows people feel happier, more energetic and have lower sickness rates in the longer and brighter days of summer, whereas their mood tends to decline during the shorter and duller days of winter.
In an article in the British Medical Journal, Mr Hillman says there is strong support for his idea - about 4 to 1 in England and Wales and fairly evenly divided in Scotland.
He said "adopting the clock change proposal is an effective, practical and remarkably easily managed way of achieving a better alignment of our waking hours with the available daylight during the year".
He added that "there would be about 300 additional hours of daylight for adults each year and 200 more for children".

I agree it should be scrapped. We would then be on the same timeline as the rest of Europe. It would certainly be better to have an extra hour of daylight on those cold winter nights.

No we would not. Most of continental Europe is one hour ahead of Great Britain, and move their clocks forward and back when we do, so Berlin is always one hour ahead of London. Hence, the British turn their clocks back at 0200, and the Germans turn their clocks back at 0300.

Helsinki is always 2 hours two hours ahead of London, which is really bizzare. During the southern Finnish summer, the sun goes below horizon, but it does not get dark (remember that twilight increases the further you get from the equator). So daylight saving time in Finland is meaningless junk.

Daylight saving time was invented by William Willett. As he was riding through Petts Wood (between Orpington and Bromley) one summer morning, he said he noticed the extra daylight time was wasted.

That's a lie. The truth is he was in bed and his feet felt cold. So he chopped the top off his blanket and sewed it to the bottom.

I used to live right up in the very north of Norway. In the winter there was a total of three hours daylight in 24 hours. Daylight savings time was meaningless there, as well.

I like it when the clocks go back, not forward.

When you returned to Great Britain, did you remember to turn your clocks back 20 years?
