Madeleine: the McCanns and the Conman - Documentary on Irish TV tonight (March 29) at 9pm

Post by Enid O'Dowd on 29.03.16 17:53

Tonight on the Irish TV station TV3 at 9pm a documentary entitled 'Madeleine: the McCanns and the Conman' is being shown.

The blurb in the Irish Independent says:

'With unprecedented access, this documentary looks at Operation Omega, the secret search to find missing child Madeleine McCann in 2008. Following the investigation set up by security consultant Kevin Halligen, this one off documentary has exclusive interviews,  including ex MI5 undercover operatives, the FBI and ex military personnel.'

The Irish Mail on Sunday makes it one of its picks of the day and says 'the man behind the search may have had a colourful background, but he discovered significant new leads.'

It sounds like the programme that was shown in the U K in 2014.

Agree with Amy and have to assume it must be the same documentary aired on Channel 5, nearly 2 years ago, in which case it is hardly ‘new’.

Possible it is a different one, but I rather doubt it.

This gripping new special exposes the truth behind the private investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann. With unprecedented access, this documentary looks at Operation Omega, the secret search to find missing child Madeleine McCann in 2008. Following the investigation set up by security consultant Kevin Halligen, this one-off documentary has exclusive interviews, including ex-MI5 undercover operatives, the FBI and ex-military personnel. As the investigation went on, it transpired that Kevin Halligen was not a spy but one of the world’s most audacious conmen.

As opposed to:

The McCann’s and the conman.

Channel 5, 3rd June 2014

This documentary explores the story of 'Operation Omega' in which a man named Kevin Halligen convinced the parents of missing Madeleine McCann, he was a secret agent. It soon transpired he had actually been conning the family the whole time, however, evidence he had gathered has since been used in the Scotland Yard case. In this film, ex-FBI agents, ex-military officers and ex-MI5 personnel discuss the con and and the subsequent use of evidence.

Yes, it looks like this is the documentary shown nearly 2 years ago.  I didn't see it. May be interesting to look at this now, from the perspective of what has happened since it was shown which admittedly hasn't been a lot.

I'm wondering why it is now getting a prime time slot in Ireland and wasn't shown here around the time it was first broadcast.  Maybe a matter of money; perhaps TV3 is getting it cheap now (like you can get great food bargains when something is close to its do not use after date!!!)

But why show it now 2 years later and on a prime time slot? The majority of people are no longer interested in this story, and when it does make the papers (never on the news anymore) all it gets is negative comments for a day or two, then it's forgotten again'plus would they have to have the permission from the duo to air it?

Fixed, someone should have words with the editor!

I did see this documentary a while back, on Channel 5 I think? That detail stands out purely because I have never watched anything else on that channel..
