Former North Wales Police Officer facing further charges of abuse of children in North Wales Care Home

Post by willowthewisp on 05.11.15 12:38

These charges must obviously be false, as Lord Hague had carried out an expensive inquiry into the Allegations at Bryn Allyn and Estynn?Where the official files of the inquiry conclusions can be ascertained of Lord Hague's investigation uncovered or not as the case may be,eh William, acting under the John Major Conservative Government?
Now suddenly jettisoned to the House of Lords aged 48 to greatly assist dodgy Dave to have his Commons motions passed by the Unelected Chamber, of which Jacob Rees Mog wants another 100 Lords and Ladies at the Tax payers expense of at least £300.00 per day x 950,Ker ching £81 million per year!Jack Straw, Malcom Rifkind, our rates are £6000.00 per day, Channel 4 Documentry, unfounded allegations by unscrupulous characters by the Parliament inquiry?
Who said the Countries in a recession, let us have more of the cake than those plebs, undeserving in society, more cuts to their benefits, we'll show erm how to Govern?

Ex-police chief Gordon Anglesea facing three further historic child sex abuse charges

14:50, 4 Nov 2015
Updated 15:13, 4 Nov 2015
By Gary Porter

The retired North Wales Police superintendent, who now faces a total of 10 charges, will appear in court on November 17

Former North Wales Police chief Gordon Anglesea

A Former North Wales Police chief has been charged with three further historic offences of child sex abuse.

Gordon Anglesea, of Gwynant, Old Colwyn, was yesterday charged with two indecent assaults and one serious sexual offence against a boy under the age of 16.

The offences are alleged to have taken place between 1982 and 1983.

The 78-year-old, who now faces a total of 10 charges relating to four children, has been bailed and is due to appear at Flintshire Magistrates’ Court in Mold on November 17.

A retired North Wales police superintendent, Anglesea was arrested by detectives from Operation Pallial , a National Crime Investigation into claims of historical sex offences in the North Wales care home system.

In July this year, he was charged with three offences of indecent assault and one serious sexual offence with a youngster in the Wrexham area between May 1984 and May 1985.

He was further charged with indecent assault and a serious sexual offence on a second youth under the age of 16 in the Colwyn Bay area between July 1979 and August 1980.

The seventh charge alleged that he indecently assaulted a boy under 16 at Mold between January 1986 and January 1987.

When he appeared at Flintshire Magistrates’ Court on July 16, the hearing was told he would deny all the allegations.

Anglesea then appeared at Mold Crown Court in August where Judge Rhys Rowlands adjourned the case for a plea and directions hearing on November 20.

During the hearing a provisional trial date was fixed on September 5, 2016.

Anglesea was a policeman for 34 years and worked as an inspector 1975 to 1983. He was promoted to superintendent and retired in 1991.

Operation Pallial is an independent NCA investigation into recent allegations of past sexual abuse in the care system in North Wales, being delivered by the NCA at the request of Mark Polin, the Chief Constable of North Wales Police.

My question would be: WHY IS ANYONE 'SURPRISED', ANYMORE, ABOUT THE 'BEHAVIOUR' OF 'SENIOR' POLICE OFFICERS, WHEN IN 'OFFICE'?

This was transferred to the Old Bailey, then back again to Mold in July.

‘Starts’ today, jury sworn in and then told not to bother coming back till Tuesday 13th:

The 78-year-old of Gwynant Old Colwyn has been charged with a number of historical sex offences

A jury has been sworn in to try the case of a former police chief charged with historical sex offences.

Ex-North Wales Police superintendent Gordon Anglesea, 78, faces four charges involving two complainants.

At Mold Crown Court a jury panel of 40 was first brought to court and members were told that the trial was listed for six weeks, although Judge Geraint Walters said that he expected it would take less than that.

Questionnaires were completed and a jury of 12, seven men and five women, with two spare female jurors for the initial stage of the trial, were selected.

The judge then asked the jury to return to court on Tuesday September 13 when the trial proper was expected to get under way.

Anglesea is charged with two counts of indecent assault and serious sexual assault on one man when he was a teenager and indecent assault on a second complainant when he was a teenager.

The defendant was arrested and charged last year by detectives from Operation Pallial, a National Crime Investigation into claims of historical sex offences in the North Wales care home system.

Not much in the way of headlines about the case, but was expected to last Six Weeks?  From the recent headlines there doesn't seem to be a clear outcome of events, but it is early days yet, seems to be a hell of a lot of accusations without clear evidence coming to the light?

WtW:

‘Not much in the way of headlines about the case’

Little snippets most days if you google him, but as you say generally hidden away.

Plenty of accusations so far, together with the defence seeming to suggest it couldn’t have happened as it was around the time he lost his young daughter.

Quite how they can string it out for another four weeks is a mystery to me, but no doubt they can manage it.

Hi DougD,thanks for the reply,William Hague had a lot to do with his initial "Inquiry"for the Major Government and since then there has been further Inquiries surrounding previous investigations and not surprisingly, they pass the"Vaz Test"Whiter than White,I'm Jim?
I would hazard a guess, that Oily Keith knows far more than what he lets the"Public" know via his Public Accounts Committee appointment system works and it isn't for the benefit of the Public?

A couple of days back, a junior police officer testified that Gordon Anglesea used to regularly require him to give him lifts to Bryn Estyn Children's Home. But he never needed a lift back. As it's sub judice and we're not really supposed to discuss ongoing Crown Court jury trials, here is the press report without further comment:

-------------------

Gordon Anglesea trial: police officer was driven to children's home, court told

Former north Wales police officer denies four charges of sexual assault against two boys between 1982 and 1987

A police commissioner has told a jury that he used to drive a senior officer accused of sexually abusing boys to a children’s home.

Arfon Jones, the police and crime commissioner for north Wales, said he drove Gordon Anglesea to the Bryn Estyn children’s home in Wrexham.

Anglesea, 78, a former police officer with North Wales police, denies four charges of sexual assault against two boys between 1982 and 1987, when they were 14 or 15.

One of the alleged victims has claimed he was assaulted by Anglesea in the showers and changing room at an attendance centre for young offenders in Wrexham. The second alleges that he was handed around “like a handbag” by a convicted paedophile called John Allen, who owned a children’s home in Wrexham.

Called by the prosecution, Jones told the jury at Mold crown court that he used to be a police officer until his retirement in 2008. He said he came across Anglesea professionally in 1982 when he himself was a constable and the defendant was an inspector.

Jones said he used to give Anglesea lifts in a police vehicle when asked. He said: “The only place I recall taking him was to Bryn Estyn children’s home. If he wanted to go to Bryn Estyn he would ask me and I would take him.”

The commissioner said Anglesea would be in uniform and he was under the impression that he went to administer cautions to the children. Jones said he would not go into the home with Anglesea but just drop him off and carry on with the other duties that he had. He did not know how or when Anglesea would leave.

“I have no idea. I have no recollection of collecting him,” he said when questioned by Eleanor Laws QC, prosecuting.

Cross-examined by Tania Griffiths QC, defending, he said that he did not know if Anglesea had the consent of the chief inspector at the time to go to the home. Jones agreed that he was a junior officer simply taking him there at the time.

The trial continues.

Nearly there, one way or the other, although I can't see any reporting of the Judge's summing up which I would have thought should have happened yesterday:

Gordon Anglesea abuse trial prosecution and defence go head to head as judgment day looms for ex-North Wales chief superintendent

16:17, 18 OCT 2016 UPDATED 16:17, 18 OCT 2016 BY ELWYN ROBERTS

Anglesea, 79, of Old Colwyn, heard prosecution and defence closing speeches ahead of jury being sent out to reach a verdict on allegations of child sexual abuse

Witnesses in the trial of former police officer Gordon Anglesea had been “raw, credible and real”, prosecuting barrister Eleanor Laws QC told the jury at Mold Crown Court.

In her closing speech, she said that if it was an act, if the two who accused him of historic sex offences, were lying, then they had given Oscar winning performances.

But defending barrister Tania Griffiths said that there may have been Oscar winning performances – but said those who “told whopping great lies” knew how to tell them.

She said the defendant was the victim of copy cat allegations and claimed there had been collusion by witnesses.
Ex police superintendent Anglesea, 79, of Old Colwyn , denies four charges of sex assault against two complainants in the 1980s.
One says he was abused at the former attendance centre he ran when a police inspector, and the other says it happened to him at a house in Mold.
Miss Laws said that both had been left damaged by the abuse and they had led chaotic lives of crime, and drug and alcohol addiction.
In the sixth week of the trial at Mold Crown Court she said the troubled lives of the two complainants did not mean that they were bitter and lying.
She said that they were abused because they were both in vulnerable situations.

Miss Laws said that the complainants gave “Oscar winning performances you may think if they are lying.”
While some details may have been contradictory, on the big picture their evidence was “raw, credible and real.”
The defendant, she said, had tried to minimise his contact with men who were later convicted paedophiles.
While he should not be guilty by association, she alleged that a connection with child abusers supported the allegations.
She urged jury members not to “leave your common sense at the door of the jury room”.
Miss Laws said that they would mark the courage of the complainants who had come forward to give evidence, with a conviction.
Defending barrister Tania Griffiths QC said that those who told “whopping great lies” knew how to tell them and branded the allegations against her client “ arrant nonsense”.

She warned of the danger of copy cat allegations by people who wanted compensation by making false allegations.
“Absolutely it is an Oscar winning performance and you don’t need me to tell you that.
“Those who tell whopping great lies know how to tell them,” she said.
There had been angry, shouting accusations from witnesses while Anglesea had shown a “stiff upper lip” with no shouting back, and no self pity.
“ Mr Anglesea is a decent man,” she said.
The attendance centre had been a creature of its time, a well run establishment where the defendant had been firm with the boys.
Miss Griffiths told the jury that for a proper victim the system was right.
“But for someone who is not a proper victim it’s a licence to print money,” she alleged.

The jury had been treated over the last six weeks to a smoke screen, she said.
She warned of the danger of contamination of evidence and said that a Bryn Alyn home survivor’s web site, which closed down before the trial, had spoke about “all singing from the same hymn sheet” and “sticking together.”
There was talk of compensation, the top 16 abusers named by a number of people, and “similar fact evidence which got John Allen convicted last time”.
There was a risk of contamination at what she called “an Aladdin’s Cave” where people could pick up “a tailor made allegation.”
She suggested the complainants were making copy cat allegations.
The jury were being asked to say there was no smoke without fire.
“The greatest risk is not from the allegations but all this nonsense you have heard of no smoke without fire,” she said.
If he had been a paedophile for years why had he not been arrested and put on trial before?
Despite all previous investigations, nothing had been found on him on arrest, there was nothing on his computer, there was no connection to paedophiles, and no connection to John Allen.
How would he have been able to conceal a double life for years?
Miss Griffiths said the allegations against Anglesea deserved no place in a criminal trial and claimed the police were desperate for a conviction.

Former North Wales Police Officer facing further charges of abuse of children in North Wales Care Home

Post by willowthewisp on 20.10.16 12:51

Perhaps Miss Griffiths would have been best served,as to how many former Police commanders had been brought before a Court of Law and yet again we the use of"Character assassination"Alcoholics,Drug users after compensation versus the Fine upstanding Gentleman?
If as has been pointed out, that any actual evidence has not been found but a lot of"Hearsay"which is defined as not being proof, then Mr Gordon Angelsea will leave Court as Not Guilty!

Guilty verdict

Post by Doug D on 21.10.16 20:38

Gordon Anglesea: Former police chief guilty of child sex abuse

From the section
North East Wales

A former north Wales police chief has been found guilty of historical child sex offences.

Gordon Anglesea, 79, from Old Colwyn, was convicted of one charge of indecent assault against one boy, and three indecent assaults against another.
Addressing Anglesea at Mold Crown Court Judge Geraint Walters said "there can only be one sentence and that is a prison sentence".

North Wales Police's assistant chief constable apologised after the trial.

"The victims in this case have waited a long time for justice and I am pleased that today they have seen this done," said ACC Richard Debicki.

"It has not been an easy journey from them, it has taken courage to stand by their convictions, but I hope that they will now take some solace from seeing their abuser brought to justice."

"I would like to apologise on behalf of the force to those whose lives he so traumatically affected."

Anglesea, a former superintendent in the Wrexham area, had denied the charges, with his defence funded by the Police Federation.

He was also found not guilty of an alternative charge of a serious sexual assault, and granted bail until 4 November when he will be sentenced.

Ed Beltrami, chief prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service Wales, said Anglesea had been in "a position of power and authority in order to prey on very young and vulnerable victims" and praised those who gave evidence for helping to secure his conviction.

"I hope that it will also prove to be a meaningful step in the recovery process of his victims, who have had to live with what happened for a long time before seeing their abuser brought before the court," he added.

'Smirk on his face'

Anglesea was arrested in 2013 as part of the National Crime Agency's Operation Pallial investigation into historical abuse across north Wales.

The offences took place between 1982 and 1987, when both boys were aged 14 or 15.

One boy was abused in the showers of a Home Office attendance centre in Wrexham run by Anglesea, who was a police inspector at the time.
The court heard how he subjected juvenile offenders to a military-style, "short, sharp shock" regime of physical exercise, drill parades and woodwork classes on Saturday afternoons.

Anglesea was "answerable to no-one" at the centre and would "inspect" the parade, make the youngsters do naked sit-ups and squat thrusts, then loiter around the showers "with a smirk on his face".

His second victim was initially sexually assaulted by convicted paedophile John Allen, while living at the Bryn Alyn children's home in Wrexham and the abuse sometimes involved other adults who used him "like a toy".

On one occasion, at a house in Mold, he said Anglesea "grabbed him by the hair" and indecently assaulted him, calling him "scum" and telling him he had the "power to send him away".

The prosecution said both victims had been left "damaged" by the abuse and led "chaotic" lives of crime and drug and alcohol addiction.

'Darkest' days

During the trial, Anglesea was questioned about links to other paedophiles, including Gary Cooke, who is currently serving 14 years in prison, and Peter Howarth, former deputy head of the Bryn Estyn children's home, who died in prison in 1997.

In 1994, Anglesea was awarded £375,000 in libel damages after media organisations ran stories about his links to abuse at children's homes in north Wales.

One report, published in 1991, detailed how Bryn Estyn residents claimed he was a regular visitor to the home.

Anglesea has always maintained the allegations at the heart of the libel case were false but said in court that even after the libel trial, the issue "never went away".

One of those publications sued by Anglesea was the satirical magazine Private Eye.

In a statement, its high-profile editor Ian Hislop, described that action as "one of the darkest periods of my editorship".

"During the libel trial Anglesea said that he had never assaulted any teenage boys. We now know that this was a lie, that he was indeed a paedophile, that in truth he had no reputation to defend.

"I take a certain grim satisfaction in this verdict today and in the fact that justice has eventually been done."
But Mr Hislop said he did not intend to revisit the libel case.

"Private Eye will not be looking to get our money back from the libel damages. Others have paid a far higher price," he said.

Well, well. Doesn’t even warrant a mention on any of today’s front pages!

There is a front page article in the Times about ‘predatory police officers’, but not even a comment on the front page such as ‘this comes on the day Anglesea, who won substantial damages back in 1994 for allegations which have now been proved in Court, was finally convicted’.

Private Eye will not pursue money back from libel damages

Ian Hislop has told that they will not look to seek money back from libel damages the magazine had to pay out regarding Anglesea.

Mr Hislop said: “During the libel trial Anglesea said that he had never assaulted any teenage boys. We now know that this was a lie, that he was indeed a paedophile, that in truth he had no reputation to defend and that he should never have sued anyone on this basis. I take a certain grim satisfaction in this verdict today and in the fact that justice has eventually been done. But it is a miserable story and it was one of the darkest periods of my editorship. I can’t help thinking of the witnesses who came forward to assist our case at the time, one of whom later committed suicide telling his wife that he never got over “not being believed. Private Eye will not be looking to get our money back from the libel damages. Others have paid a far higher price.”

Gordon Angelsea,Guilty

Post by willowthewisp on 22.10.16 14:30

Hi DougD,thank you for supplying these postings,as Ian Hislop has stated, this has cost"human loss of life"due to Mr Angelsea obtaining funds from "Private Eye Magazine"for libel!?
Perhaps,Lady Justice Macur and Lord Hague would care to comment on the number of Predatory person's to have been "Found Guilty" after both of these person's Inquiries into Bryn Alyn,Estyn Care Homes, seemingly found little or no"Abuse of Children" from these "Care Home Facilities",yet as Aangirfan article, states numerous tragic loss of life in mysterious circumstances that the Police Investigated, but concluded differently as to their Deaths.
The Fire at the Brighton Flat, that consumed the "John's Brothers"lives, with the Owner being one Mr Hoogstratton, who never supplied a"Fire Escape Stairwell"from the premises at the time of the Fire, started deliberately by Mr Trevor Carrington, who tried to commit Suicide but failed, then after"Confessing to the Fire"he was involved with a Tragic Motor Accident, which was put down to his"Suicide"Death?
The police found Mr Carrington had received a large sum of Money recently, which had been deposited in the "Isle of Man by Benefactors" not disclosed at the Inquest to Mr Carrington's Death?
Scallywag and Private eye magazine were closer to the "Truth"than our Boys in Blue over the Abusers being"Protected by Government sources",have they gone along with the "Cover Up" in the very best interests of"Government"?
This seems more and more like the Marc Dutroui attempted Cover Up in Europe, involving their Royal connections and Upper Echelons from their Society and the UK Channel Islands, Haute Da La Guranne,Mr Heath, Saville!
PS,If the amount of work Aangirfan has dedicated to the pursuit for the "Truth Child Abuse"and the linkage of connections to the Governments constant denial of a "Paedohile Ring"being in existence?
They have amassed "Documented Evidence" from some where and if it is as large as they State, this has been consistently Covered Up by the past UK Governments for decades, the UK Police Forces swear an "Oath" to protect the King or Queen of the UK?

Long and detailed report of the court case and the acrimonious legal arguments that took up so much of the time:

Need to read through it again a bit more slowly.

Hi DougD,thanks for the related article from above, this just shows for how long certain people have tried to suppress"Evidence"related to child abuse for so long within the UK?
So the Government have spent over Twenty Million Pound trying to suppress the "Paedophiles"that they had knowledge of who were running these"Care Home Institutions"knowing full well that the Government of the Day would be accountable for any"Compensation Claims"which is what MP Ann Clwyd had raised within the House of Parliament on many occasions, being described as a "Friend" of the accusers by Conservative Government Ministers?
Has it ever been questioned as to how Mr John Allen was awarded a Thirty Million Pound Contract at Bryn Alyn,Estyyn Care Home related to"Approved Trips"to the Continents of Europe,Amsterdam and certain Adult themed activities, involving Minors?
All those past supporters of the PIE Group wishing to alter the Legal age of sexual Activity to Ten Years of Age,with Ma Learned friends from Both Chambers, hang your heads in Shame now do you,now your past is catching up with them?

Not all over yet of course:

‘A source within his defence team said: "Of course we will appeal. He is an innocent man."’

Anglesea to appeal

Post by Doug D on 07.11.16 17:07

Paedophile Gordon Anglesea to appeal against convictions

From the section
North East Wales

The solicitor representing paedophile Gordon Anglesea has confirmed they will be appealing his conviction.

The 79-year-old from Old Colwyn, Conwy County was jailed for 12 years for historical child sex abuse on Friday.

Mike Mackey, from the Manchester-based firm Burton Copeland, said they will be lodging an application to seek leave to appeal the conviction within the next 10 days.

Mr Mackey said they were currently preparing the documents.

Anglesea, a former North Wales Police superintendent, was convicted of one charge of indecent assault against one boy and three indecent assaults against another after a six week trial at at Mold Crown Court.

The offences took place between 1982 and 1987, when both boys were 14 or 15.

Meanwhile, a National Crime Agency spokesman said "financial matters" relating to Anglesea were "currently being examined under the Proceeds of Crime Act".

………………………………………………..

Apart from last sentence above, assets bit only reported in ‘Rebecca’ as far as I can see:

Exclusive: Gordon Anglesea — Assets Under Threat

POLICE ARE investigating the possible seizure of assets belonging to convicted paedophile police chief Gordon Anglesea.

The retired North Wales Police superintendent was gaoled for 12 years last Friday (November 4).

A spokesman for the National Crime Agency (NCA) told Rebecca this afternoon:
“Financial matters relating to Gordon Anglesea are currently being examined under the Proceeds of Crime Act.”

Rebecca understands this is in connection with the £375,000 damages Anglesea received from his successful 1994 libel action against four media organisations.
HTV (now ITV Wales) and the Observer paid £107,5000 each while Private Eye and the Independent on Sunday handed over £80,000 apiece.

All accused him of abusing children.

During the libel action, Anglesea’s barrister Gareth Williams asked him if he had ever “sexually abused any small boy”.

Anglesea replied: “No, sir.”

The NCA move is separate from the attempt by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) to recover £150,000 in costs which will be heard in January.

However, inquiries by Rebecca suggest the NCA and the CPS may find it difficult to trace Anglesea’s assets.

He has no financial interest in the family home in Gwynant, Old Colwyn.
The property — bought for £305,000 in July 2006 — is mortgage-free.

Last month the detached house was transferred to his wife Sandra.

The transfer was recorded by the Land Registry in Swansea on October 28.

This was a week after a jury found Anglesea guilty of sexually abusing two boys in the 1980s.
The Land Registry records do not show who owned the house before October 28.

According to the Electoral Register, however, Gordon and Sandra Anglesea have occupied the property since 2006.

There is also speculation that all or part of Anglesea’s valuable police pension may be revoked.

North Wales Police said today this would be a matter for the Police and Crime Commissioner for North Wales (PCC), Arfon Jones.
We asked the PCC’s for a comment but there was no reply by the time this article went to press.

Meanwhile, the Rotary Club of Rhos on Sea, where Anglesea has been president three times, said he’s no longer a member.

Club secretary John Roberts said Anglesea gave up his membership 18 months ago.

In 2010, Anglesea was in charge of the club’s “Youth Service”.

Anglesea has also given up his membership of freemasonry.

The United Grand Lodge of England said he’d surrendered his last membership in 2007.

………………………………………….

Left it a bit late to try and protect his assets. Transfers will get unwound.

Interestingly they have pulled this from the old libel action case:

‘During the libel action, Anglesea’s barrister Gareth Williams asked him if he had ever “sexually abused any small boy”.

Anglesea replied: “No, sir.”

Not ‘any boy’, but specifically ‘any small boy’, so based on a subjective assessment of ‘small’ (age 14/15 arguably not), probably a truthful answer.
