Swiss Democracy

Post by PeterMac on 27.03.15 16:29

In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and the Renaissance.
In Switzerland they had brotherly love - they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce?
The cuckoo clock.''

@Tony Bennett wrote:
Back to the General Election, I've looked at the last 20 opinion polls, and taken an average of them, five at a time, over these periods:
Period 1: 11 to 13 March
Period 2: 13 to 17 March
Period 3: 17 to 21 March
Period 4: 21 to 24 March

These are the figures for each party:

Labour, average 33%
Periods 1 to 4: 32.8  > 33.4 > 33.6 >  33.6

Conservative, average 33%

Periods 1 to 4: 32.6  > 33.4  > 33.0  > 33.4

UKIP, average 14%
Perioids 1 to 4: 14.0 > 13.2 > 15.2 > 13.2

Liberal Democrats, average 8%

Periods 1 to 4: 7.6 > 7.4 > 8.4 > 8.2

Greens, average  5%
Periods 1 to 4:  5.2 > 5.8 > 5.0 >  5.4

Others, average 6%

Periods 1 to 4:  5.8 >  6.8 > 4.8 >  6.0

The last 5 polls have the Conservatives in a slight lead in 3 of them; the other two have them tied with Labour.

Since I reported last time, the state of the parties in the latest polls has changed as follows:

Conservatives now 34.8%, up 1.4% since last time

Labour now 33.4%, down 0.2%

UKIP now 13.0%, down 0.2%

Liberal Democrats now 7.8%, down 0.4%

Greens 5.2%, down 0.2%

Others now 6.0%, no change.

On current polls, two possible loose coalitions seem in prospect

Alternative 1

( 285 Cons
( 24 Lib
( 8 Dem Unionist
( 3 UKIP

= 320 out of 650 seats

Alternative 2

( 272 Lab
( 45 Scots Nat
( 3 Welsh Nat
( 1 Green

= 321 out of 650 seats

My local Councillor has just knocked my door. He's from the Green Party. He does a really good job in this area. He deserves to be re-elected. He works hard. He's young and committed. He regularly keeps in touch with the electorate in a factual and honest way. I like what his party do in this area. Things work here! He regularly updates on local planning issues and keeps people up to date on what he's done about their concerns. He's a remarkable young man. I didn't need to meet him to understand what he does for this community.

I have to say I won't be voting Green in the general election but I'll be voting Green for the council election.

For the first time in my life I've stuck a poster in my window. It's fluorescent lime green and can't be missed.

Nice to read about someone who is actually doing the job they are paid to do.

Re. the 2 hr long leaders' debate on Thursday.   Well that didn't convince me to vote for any of them.

What's all the fuss about Nicola Sturgeon?  What did she actually say on Thursday leading to all this admiration and super woman label?

We were governed by the Scots for 13 years - Blair, Brown, Darling, Douglas, Reid blah blah, and look how that ended.

I hope that nobody gives her the opportunity to form a coalition government (turkeys voting for Christmas)  but alas it looks as though it could happen.

Britain has gone mad, but seems to be getting madder by the day.

IMO we need a far left party to counter the rich boys and their banker friends. The SNP is more left than Labour and it would be a real tonic to see SNP and Tories in a coalition and watch Nicola Sturgeon keeping DC and his Eton buddies in check.

Blair wasn`t a true Socialist, and IMO the Tories are right when they say the rot set in under Blair and Brown.  I can`t think of anything that NuLabour achieved except line Tony Blair`s pockets and get ourselves into two wars.

I think the rot started with Thatcher and her neo-liberal ideology which Blair embraced.

SNP and Tory coalition?  I can't see that happening.

If he does get in I hope he doesn't advise the gen. public to max out their credit cards to beat boom and bust.  big grin

Gordon Brown probably doesn't need to max out his credit cards now he is on the mega money making circuit.

I still don't know which box to tick.

I need someone to show me the odds. If I tick a box for UKIP will that be helpful to Labour (I couldn't possibly vote for that party as Labour fooked this country).

I'm hopeless as to where to place my vote.

I was already leaning towards Green as I watched Question Time when Natalie Bennett was on the panel and thought at the time she was very good. I was so impressed I thought she would make a good PM.

Strangely enough I took the test and it said I should vote Green.

Still not sure - so I don't know which box to tick.

A run of six successive polls has Labour in the lead in all of them.

In the last two polls they are ahead by 6% and 4% respectively.

This means Miliband and Labour would win 10 to 20 more seats than the Conservatives...

...and would mean that for the next 5 years the U.K. will be run by a Labour-Scottish Nationalist government - these two parties would then have more than half the seats - at least 326.

Now that would make a nice change - to let more foreigners in, Labour would keep trident, allow fracking etc.  Well I don`t care as long as Esther McVey withers away.   I`m seriously considering Liberal Democrat.

The bookies are rarely wrong, and they are currently going for Conservative.

http://www.oddschecker.com/politics/british-politics/next-uk-general-election/most-seats

Despite some polls, they also predicted correctly last year for the referendum.

ETA : Conservative = most seats (surely that's a Government ?) , but favourite to form a Government is a Labour minority. Ah well...back to the drawing board !
