Jose Socrates, former Portuguese PM, REMANDED IN CUSTODY 28 Nov 2014

Post by Tony Bennett on 29.11.14 21:16

Jose Socrates, Portuguese PM, has been suspected by some of collaborating with the British authorities to suppress vital information concerning the reported disappearance of Madeleine McCann.

As of today, he is in jail - remanded in custody on serious corruption charges - see below.

He joins an ever-growing number of people associated with the Madeleine McCann case who have also been in jail - here are the others:

* Kevin Halligen - hand-picked and appointed personally by McCann Team members Brian Kennedy, Clarence Mitchell and of course the McCanns, he headed up the McCanns' private investigations from April to August 2008, when a blistering row amongst Find Madeleine Fund directors led to his being sacked, but not until after he had pocketed £500,000 plus expenses whilst in fact he was living the high life across two continents with girlfriend Shirin Trachiotis. He went on the run from police, eventually being run to ground at a £700-a-night Oxfordshire hotel, whereupon he was bundled into Belmarsh top security jail in south-east London, He then spent FOUR YEARS in jail here and in the U.S. after admitting a $2 million dollar fraud

* Antonio Giminez Raso - again, hand-picked by Brian Kennedy for high profile work on the Madeleine McCann private investigation, whilst an inspector
in the Catalonian Drugs & Trafficking Unit in Barcelona, he befriended and assisted an unusually violent gang of drugs criminals who, inter alia, stole drugs from a boat in Barcelona, allegedly on a tip-off from Giminez Raso. He was bundled into jail in February 2008, and spent four years on remand in jail, before being acquitted - though not before a stern lecture from the judge who said he had 'been far too close' to various members of the gang. The McCanns' spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, committed a barefaced lie by saying that Giminez Raso was nothing to do with the McCanns' private investigation

* Francisco Marco  - discredited boss of the discredited detective agency, Metodo 3, used by the McCanns from September 2007 to at least March 2009, he was jailed in 2013 after being caught illegally taping the conversations of top Spanish politicians in a plush Barcelona restaurant

* Julian Peribanez - one of the lead private Metodo 3 investigators used by the McCann Team, he worked closely with financial compliance and money-laundering expert Gary Hagland on the Find Madeleine Fund's private investigation into Madeleine's disappearance. In 2013 he was also jailed after admitting his part in the illegal taping of private conversations.

Will any more people associated with the McCann case be sent to prison?

Socrates: "I feel freer than ever"

Ex-prime minister is remanded in custody in the Evora Prison

José Socrates, who is in custody in Evora, made a brief statement to the weekly Expresso . In a telephone conversation, the former prime minister says he feels "freer than ever" and adds that "only ceases to be free who loses dignity."

More Portuguese politicians jailed for long terms:

[I think this is a Google translation - T.B.] The former deputy Duarte Lima was on Friday sentenced to 10 years in prison in legal matters worse, in the case Homeland related to credit obtained in Portuguese Business Bank (BPN) to purchase land in Oeiras. Lima Duarte: "This is a decision with profound mistakes" Duarte Lima was charged with fraud, money laundering and breach of trust and, in closing arguments, the prosecutor (MP) asked the collective of judges, chaired by Filipa Valentine a sentence of more than five years in prison. The same sentence was requested for Victor Raposo, member of Duarte Lima, accused of fraud. Duarte Lima was sentenced to six years in prison for aggravated fraud and seven years for money laundering, and to fulfill a single sentence of 10 years in legal height. Already Victor Raposo was sentenced to six years of actual imprisonment for aggravated fraud.

João Almeida Paiva and was sentenced to four years of actual imprisonment for aggravated fraud and falsification of documents, and his brother Pedro Almeida Paiva and was sentenced to two years and six months in prison for aggravated fraud and falsification of documents, although the punishment can be suspended if you pay 50,000 euros to the Portuguese Institute of Oncology. Francisco Canas, known as the 'Zé medals', was sentenced to four years of actual sentence for money laundering. The prosecutor of the Republic José Nice asked the acquittal of Pedro Lima, son of the former leader of the parliamentary group of the PSD, accused of fraud and money laundering. Only Pedro Lima was acquitted in this process.

Duarte Lima says the decision is "brutal, unjust and undeserved" On leaving the court, on the campus of Justice in Lisbon, Lima Duarte maintained that the decision of the group of judges, chaired by Filipa Valentine, contains "deep and glaring factual errors" and also "errors of law" with their defense lawyers will appeal to higher courts. For the main trial accused the "central point" of the process focused on "alleged deception of BPN" on the loan for real estate business related to the purchase of land in Oeiras, but the seven responsible for the former Portuguese Business Bank, ears as witnesses at trial, rejected the idea that they had been misled or that they did not have all the information to decide on the funding. For this reason, the former deputy and lawyer believes that "there was no fraud" and that "what went wrong" was the fault of the real estate crisis and the collapse of the former BPN, chaired by Oliveira Costa. Lima Duarte denied that if "driven victimize" and rejected the argument set out in the judgment, that exercised its "political and social influence" for the financing of the BPN.

Re: Jose Socrates, former Portuguese PM, REMANDED IN CUSTODY 28 Nov 2014

Post by sallypelt on 29.11.14 21:53

This is taken from Corrieo da Manha 2010

This is a Google translation:
Writing and speaking: The freedom that comes from outside

The year started badly for our courts, but good for our country, with regard to freedom of expression. In January, the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) condemned Portugal, once again, for the violation of freedom of expression as enshrined in Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

This time, the issue was the conviction of journalist Laranjeira Marques da Silva for the crimes of violation of secrecy and defamation. But a landmark case in 2010, in terms of freedom of expression, was the banning of the book 'Maddie - The Truth of the Lie' the former PJ inspector Gonçalo Amaral, who argues for the involvement of Kate and Gerry McCann in the disappearance of daughter, in May 2007. the book's sales ban was decided on 18 February by the Civil Court of Lisbon, following an injunction filed by the McCanns, but, in 2010, on September 19, the judges Francisco Bruto da Costa, Catherine Arelo Manso and Antonio Valente, of the Lisbon, were aware of the importance of freedom of expression and revoked the decision of the 1st Instance, raising the book sales ban. Regardless of whether or not you agree with the thesis Gonçalo Amaral, the prohibition of the book, to remain, it would be a case that certainly end in Strasbourg, but fortunately decided well in our land. Much more complex situation that was encountered by the magistrates investigating the case 'missing face' concerning corruption and who was involved Armando Vara, to hear telephone conversations between the prime minister and the people investigated. The magistrates convinced of the existence of strong evidence that a plan was underway, led by José Socrates and members of his personal trust, to acquire TVI through PT, whose main objective was to end the Manuela Moura Guedes newspaper and José Eduardo Moniz away from the station. The magistrates promoted a criminal case against the prime minister who, however, never came to exist, having been filed after a Scene at least confused between the Attorney General of the Republic and President of the Supreme Court. Anyway, part of the eavesdropping was revealed by the newspaper 'Sun' and the Parliament held a series of hearings on the Ethics Committee to assess the state of freedom of expression. Rui Pedro Soares, director of PT, endorsed these wiretaps, brought injunctions calling for a ban of disclosure and heavy damages. The courts so far have given you reason and fixed compensation, according to him, at EUR 1.7 million (only the injunction), extremely high amount when they meet the current amounts in the courts for compensation values such as life, or the like. A case that will be worth monitoring in 2011.

Finally, on 7 December, the Portuguese State was condemned by the ECHR for violating freedom of expression, this time the journalists of 'public' and the newspaper business owner. The case went back to a news which mentioned the existence of Sporting's tax debts hidden in Finance. The club felt offended and asked in court compensation 500 thousand euros. The 1st Instance Court acquitted the public and journalists John Ramos de Almeida, Arnaldo Antonio Mesquita, José Manuel Fernandes and José Mateus, considering lawful publication of news, since it had taken all possible steps and had access to information credible on the debt, and it is clear the public interest in question. The Court of Appeal upheld the acquittal, but the Supreme Court, in a surprising decision that was the judge rapporteur Salvador da Costa, stated that the tax debts of a sports club, an institution with sport utilities, were not in the public interest! Forgetting the social phenomenon that is football and the importance it has at all levels. According to the STJ, journalists should not simply have given the news, and was ordered to pay 75,000 euros to Sporting - which they did. But took the case to Strasbourg, where the ECHR has now recognize that journalists had the right to publish the news and ordered Portugal to be paid to journalists and newspaper all they had spent on the process, namely the compensation paid to Sporting. Make no mistake: we live in a society where knowledge is power. Respect for freedom of expression in its various dimensions, such as freedom of opinion or the right / duty to inform is a democratic guarantee of a State. Freedom of expression is not only an individual right, but also a structural freedom of a democratic society: if there is no freedom of expression, it is not possible to form a free and enlightened public opinion, working condition of democracy. It would be nice that in 2011 our courts to remember a little more of these essential truths.

The phrase: 'How are the mighty fallen' springs to mind -

From the words of the future King David, as he lamented the loss of Saul and Jonathan after an ill-judged Israeli campaign against the Philistines:

1 Samuel 1 vv 25-27:

"How are the mighty fallen in the midst of the battle! O Jonathan, thou wast slain in thine high places.

"I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women.

"How are the mighty fallen, and the weapons of war perished!"

Matter of state

Prime Minister English said yesterday what has long been suspected on the case of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann: who discussed the issue with José Socrates to "certify" that the Portuguese police are doing "what is needed to solve the case. "

In his friendly and good-natured air, Gordon Brown made it clear that for you and your government called Maddie case is a real question of state. His words, the diplomatic involvement, police cooperation between the two countries and the progress that research has had transformed the Maddie case in a real puzzle to the British Prime Minister does not want to see turned into a collateral damage of a tragic case.
This is the 'English problem' of history. Have the 'Portuguese problem' is becoming more this feeling of institutional volatility where everything seems permissible, including a judicial investigation subject to its own rules of criminal procedure and the separation of powers is discussed in purely political terms. The 'Portuguese problem' is the ease with which an English prime minister arrives in Lisbon and says 'look there if you are doing everything you should to solve this problem with a couple of British citizens ...' And here becomes note of the concern and will diligently to see if we are right to do everything, do not go the Maddie case become a thorn in the friendly Luso-British alliance ...

A meeting between Gordon Brown and Jose Socrates in July 2007, and again in October 2007?

A question for our dear Portuguese brethren:

Is it conceivable that Mr Socrates discussed the Mecs plight with mr Brown, and

that he discussed it with the Mecs themselves? (or one or more of theur sources/friends)

Accounts of another uncle of Socrates on the Net

16/03/2009

Dozens of bank documents Celestino Monteiro, another uncle of José Sócrates, related to offshore companies established in the United States, Gibraltar and the Isle of Man, were placed on the Internet by Mário Machado, leader of the far-right group Hammerskins in Portugal convicted in October last year to four years and 10 months in prison.

The documents allegedly related to the Freeport case, which are still available for copying an online forum, reveal numerous banking transactions prime minister's family in 2001, including the purchase of the Portuguese market shares of companies such as EDP, Sonae, Portucel and PT, among many others.

Uncle moved 100 million

Beads made in a few dozen pages bank statements, transactions breast of the Prime Minister uncle exceed EUR 100 million.

In the offshore companies constitutional documents are also listed the names of several members of the family Monteiro: Celestino Julio Coelho Monteiro, Elvira Fernanda Pinto Monteiro da Silva, Carlos César Pinto Coelho da Silva Monteiro, Diana Olympia Pinto Coelho da Silva Monteiro, Julio Eduardo Coelho Monteiro, Nuno Miguel Carvalho Monteiro, Hugo Eduardo Carvalho Monteiro and Helen Ruth Carvalho Monteiro.

Celestino Monteiro has not yet confirmed the authenticity of those documents but a source of Banco Popular, banking organization that took over the missing BNC - National Bank of Credit, does not deny the existence of the documents.

The nationalist leader explained that the documents you arrived at the doorstep after you have touched the bell: "When I opened the door I saw a blanket. I unrolled it and there was documentation. If called, will be what I will say in PJ ".

Although the documents there become available for download since last Wednesday (http://www.forumnacional.net/showthread.php?t=34495), the authorities did nothing so far to remove them.

Appears to be some familiar names amongst that little lot.

* Yes, just NINE DAYS after becoming Prime Minister, Gordon Brown entertains Jose Socrates in 10 Downing Street - and they discuss Madeleine McCann.

* Then three months later, they discuss Madeleine AGAIN in Lisbon during their discussions about the Lisbon Treaty (one of those E.U. treaties that takes powers away from the nation-states and transfers them to Brussels).

* Then we recall how Gordon Brown, when he was Chancellor of the Exchequer (NOT the Foreign Secretary), had many private telephone conversations with Dr Gerald McCann, in May 2007

* And we remember that he put pressure on the Portuguese authorities to release (on 25 May) a description of Madeleine's supposed abductor based on the unreliable and ever-changing statements of Jane Tanner

* Further, we recall how the very week the McCanns returned to England after being made suspects, Gordon Brown dropped everything to take a day trip to Leicestershire Police to meet with Leicestershire Constabulary Chief Constable, Matt Baggott (subsequently promoted to Chief Constable for Northern Ireland).

Wny, it's almost as though he had some personal stake in this whole mystery...

@ Google.Gaspar.Statements

Yes, my mistake, Dr Amaral covered this in his book, 'The Truth About A Lie'. He said that Gordon Brown had been notified that he was to be removed from the Madeleine McCann investigation, hours before he received a fax informing him that he was removed with immediate effect from his post at Portimao, heading up the Madeleine McCann enquiry. He was asked to remove himself to the Faro police station and report for duty there.  Clearly the British government - along with the McCann Team - wanted Amaral removed from the investigation.

And the Portuguese government - led by the crook and criminal Jose Socrates - were only too willing to help!

Re: Jose Socrates, former Portuguese PM, REMANDED IN CUSTODY 28 Nov 2014

Post by sallypelt on 30.11.14 10:22

Here is another Google translation from and article in the  Corieo da Manha, dated 19.9.07:

 10.09.2007  13:00

Kate was presented on Thursday at the Judicial Police visibly uncontrolled. Police sources contacted by the CM said, we had several times along the more than 13 hours of interrogation, hysterical reactions. And refused to answer many questions. He did not explain the blood found in the car, did not respond to slap her daughter. And do not even confirmed clearly whether would sedate children.
Certainties for the PJ are just the facts. And these reveal that it was Kate who usually took care of the children, lay regularly, while Gerry was playing tennis or resting in the pool. The testimony of the English septuagenarian (Pamela Fenn), which occupied an apartment upstairs to that used by McCann, also suggests that sometimes Kate became violent. If Descontrolava-being audible the girl's screams to call the father. There is another witness, also English, referring to the same scenario. Kate seemed to have moments of aggression towards the children, and the father, though more absent, who showed greater emotional control.
Kate refuted all these suspicions in the Judicial Police of Portimão where he was interrogated and was in that context that explained his criminal framework of negligent homicide. The CM knows that researchers, although not directly confront with possible aggression, you explained that to not admit the accident could open doors for a painful legal framework.
Which means that it would stop dealing with negligent homicide, to move to a felony or with any intent.
FATHER ASKS THE EVIDENCE PJ
Gerry also had an unusual behavior during judicial interrogation. Faced with suspicions of PJ, Maddie's father has repeatedly asked that you were provided evidence. Not peremptorily denied the facts, but tried to see if the authorities had sufficient evidence to sustain the murder thesis.
For PJ there is also another strange situation. If it was an accident, why the McCanns got rid of the corpse and simulated an abduction? The hypothesis of hiding something more than a thoughtless act is on the table and the researchers hope only exhaust all chances for them to explain death. After that advance to the charge of murder and concealment of a corpse.
JUDICIAL MAKES REPORT PROPOSES TO ATTORNEY SEARCHES
The next steps of the research will have to be decided by the prosecutor. When resume searches at Maddie's body and when demand will again be asked the McCann yesterday morning returned to their country.
The decision is now up to the prosecutor José de Magalhães e Menezes, who today will receive the interim report by the PJ in Portimão.
The head of department should suggest further steps to be taken, namely that the search be resumed, as accurate as possible, to avoid a repeat of the relentless pursuit of May and also the "rush" that marked the Joana case.
Yesterday, the criminal police, the atmosphere was of dismay. Several sources contacted by the CM confirmed the obvious. That the attitude of McCann to leave the country was covered by legality - the couple paid Terms of Identity and Residency at the address you have in England - but now the process is in serious danger of never to be resolved. "Attitude is cool. But of course that will complicate the investigation, because we have to wait for the fulfillment of legal formalities, "said the CM spokesman PJ, Olegario de Sousa.
GNR WAITING TO ADVANCE
The GNR was contacted last Friday, to be available from today to advance to search the land south of the Ocean Club. However, they are not marked, and must be dependent on the decision of the prosecution. It is likely, however, to be taken in the coming days, but starting to specific locations.
PROSECUTOR retreated
On Thursday, when the Judicial Police opted inquiry Kate, researchers admit it is defendant and, if it does not fully respond to the evidence collected by the research, hold it at least suspected of a crime of homicide with eventual intent . Only then Madeleine's mother could be present the first judicial interrogation, so that the investigating judge you apply coercive measures, in addition to the Identity and Residence Agreement.
During the day on Thursday everything changed. The prosecutor, who began by admitting the arrest out of flagrante delicto, understood then only be negligent homicide evidence and concealment of a corpse, and none of these crimes admits the pre-trial detention and prevents the presentation to judgment.
VIP TREATMENT FOR MCCANN
Kate press the yellow coat, loose the belt hastily and takes his daughter. Runs home with a closed face that no longer can handle the cameras. It is the image of the day, photographers in ladders, cameras on cranes, two helicopters in the air just to late morning. It is surrounded the 'Orchard House' and the uniformed police looking for order at the gate of the McCanns.
Four months after the homecoming, a return to four. Gerry went through Rothley emdigressãopelo World but for Kate, yesterday was the first time without Madeleine and now suspected by the death of her daughter. Two vans leave the East Midland Airport, near Leicester in VIP exit and cross the gate house by 13:15. The family ahead and advisers ago. Brian uncle is there to receive them, and Kate goes directly upstairs, avoid toys next to the first room on the left window. Gerry follows behind with Brian's lap, then back to search your bags and ignore the cameras.

SHAKE THE LIGHT OF THE BEACH
Before that, in Praia da Luz, the excitement was great. Throughout the night, it was expected that the McCanns leave the rented apartment in Rua das Flores onward the wheel of the Renault Scenic towards Faro Airport. Once the hands marked 6:00 am, the GNR offered them a VIP treatment.
Access to Sea View Villa was sealed by GNRaos journalists and curious that there awaiting the departure of the latest defendants the Maddie case. 6:20 a.m. and were still three hours to board the flight 6552 Easyjet.

Fifteen minutes later, some relatives of the McCanns packed their bags in the car boot rented where the PJ found traces of blood. Paragraph 27 of the Flowers Street was about to be abandoned and minutes later arrived at the scene a taxi: an Audi A3 that quickly started out maneuvers. The spokesman, David Hughes arrived at the scene to join the family after Mrs Justine McGuiness have guaranteed hours before the couple would not let the Algarve.
A GNR element addressed however to journalists to convey a message. Transformed into the couple's publicist said the defendants would only make a public statement when they got to the airport.
At 7:05 a.m., Kate, Gerry, advisors and family occupied the three vehicles and left the village where Maddie disappeared on May 3. Followed by the media, arrive at the airport forty minutes after entering the VIP access, usually used by ambassadors and diplomats. The promised declaration was not made and the McCanns left Portugal to 9:45 a.m. without going through the check-in.
DISCRETION IN TRAVEL PREPARATION
Throughout the day Friday, Kate and Gerry and their families remained indoors without raising suspicion that they were preparing to leave the next morning. No fuss passed the idea that they were only collected
COUPLE SPOKESMAN DID NOT COMMENTS
Briton David Hughes, one of the couple's press officers McCann refused to speak to the press when it came to Kate's house and Gerry. Do not say a word to reporters.
JUSTICE McGuiness LIED TO BRAZEN
By early Friday morning, Justice McGuiness told CM unaware when the McCanns were traveling. After all the places on the flight were marked for over a week.
"COURSE IN PORTUGAL IS WHO THINK THAT HAD RUN AWAY"

It was not the image they wanted to leave but was the one that was. "Of course in Portugal for those who think that they fled," admits Kate's uncle. But "only did the twins", four months after the crime, in the week that are suspected of the killing and hide the body of her daughter.
And if they are called back, "we'll see". One is that "they are happy and it's great to have them back" to Rothley, says Brian Kennedy. Just do not turn five, as he wanted his mother a week ago. But, "to what we know, the search for Madeleine continues."
Brian arrived by 12:45 the 'Orchard House' and prepared the arrival of the nephews. "It's very difficult for Kate never came home. These are moments of great emotion and is only doing it for the children "he says. The couple arrived half an hour later and said not a word, but already in England are "calm and happy". Also because "are not accused of anything and the police did not object." Anyway the family appreciates the support of all, has spoken to many people and "people know they are pathetic suspicious".
At lunch time the McCanns were already "very tired". Uncle speaks in silence for the next days. And fired up yesterday with a "thank you all" to the British press, "by the way have treated".
NEIGHBOURS are indifferent WITH DOUBLE
Two kids cross the bike satellite cars and they make their way through the police. The sight of Portimão does not reach the gray village of Rothley. And the whistles to the Judicial door much less. Ali comes as media couple of Europe, newspapers, BBC and Sky chase and neighboring thank. Watch television or read calmly leave the day after.
"You live longer these things, have the heart to walk the mouth. Are Latino, "said Constance out of the grocery store. In 72 years has seen it all "but never a mother kill her daughter, hide the body and run crying to the Pope. It would be the worst of crimes, what kind of people do it? "
"To see" the neighbors are with the McCanns. Were unknown in the village but "a crime such as a family is bad anymore." Nothing breaks the modesty of a Sunday in Rothley, perhaps the world rugby one, several, mugs counter to the pub The Royal Oak. No longer are surprised journalists but little mix, do not understand hundreds of onlookers in the Algarve for an arrival or departure of the couple. "Culture," admits John Simmon, an English middle-aged and all tattooed the body.
In day Mass and reflection Susan prays "for the return or the soul of Maddie, an innocent in the middle of all this." And life goes on in the town center as 300 meters away, in four villas street where no one comes to the window. The McCanns collect, photographers only expect open for the best picture and in the afternoon, Phil calmly watering the garden side. Hardly had the know and not to know.

LIGHT DOUBT THE PARENTS OF GUILT
Esther is sitting at the church door before starting mass. Your late seventies synthesize the prevailing opinion in the village of Light. "It's hard for me to believe that parents have something to do with the disappearance of the girl. But if there was an accident were to tell the truth. "
Kate and Gerry McCann left the Praia da Luz on the day that the community celebrated its patron saint with outdoor Mass and procession. "They should have come here to thank this community that both supported," says another parishioner. Agnes does not believe in the guilt of the McCanns and is of the opinion that "did well to leave because of media pressure." Esther adds: "It was an escape. They did so with the agreement of the police. "
It is felt that the community was deeply involved in the last four months and now has trouble believing it may have been wrong. Next to Agnes, Lisdália commented: "If they were I leave to believe in people, is the bishop or even the Pope."
MADDIE CASE is READ MORE NEWS IN THE WORLD
The turnaround in the Maddie case, with parents of English girl transform themselves victims suspects. And the immediate departure of the McCann couple to the UK dominated the news in recent days more seen in the pages of the online editions worldwide. In addition to the United Kingdom (country of origin of the parents and children who have been the target of a crime) and Portugal (country where the disappearance occurred), the Maddie case aroused the interest of millions of readers witness the search engine Yahoo. The French, US, Canadian, German, Spanish and Italian versions the course of the police investigation brings together the largest number of searches.
In Spain, the internet editions of the two most widely read newspapers, the 'El Mundo' and the 'El País', yesterday gave the highest prominence to the Maddie case.
The 'El País' highlighted the gradual loss of confidence in the British couple who created the largest campaign ever seen around a missing child. The cause for the rise of the British doubts is directly related to the certainties of the DNA of little Maddie that were obtained in the results produced by the English laboratory Birmingham, based on data collected in the Algarve.
Even the 'The Sun' newspaper that has not spared the criticisms of the Judiciary Police research work, now comes with a more moderate stance, stressing confidence in the tests, discounted some caution.
The British press remains very criticize the work of the Judicial Police. For instance, yesterday the 'This is London' were reporting as absurd police have kept the car where decisive evidence was obtained in the hands of McCann until the day they left for the UK. However, "arise also news that begin to open doors to the possibility that the Portuguese police have reason and little Maddie may have been the victim of a fatal accident," yesterday wrote the 'El Pais'.
In an article in 'The Daily Mail', one of its journalist raised this hypothesis, a news headed by the question that Kate did not answer: "Why was Maddie's blood in the car"
QUESTIONS WITHOUT ANSWERS
The emotional arrival of the McCann UK coincides with the first news that cast doubt on whether the couple was not only responsible for the children be alone but also the disappearance of Maddie. O 'The Times' recalls the last night that Maddie was seen and puts a lot of suspicion for which there is no answer. In the same vein also write 'The Guardian' and 'The People'.

Edited to add, for those who aren't familiar with translations, that when they are referring to Kate as "he", this is common practice in these types of translations.

This is information taken from Expresso. As you can see, this is the Summit, where G Brown discussed Madeleine McCann, with the then Prime Minister or Portugal, Jose Socrates. Today, Jose Socrates is in jail for alleged "money laundering, fraud" and other crimes. BUT what isn't stated in the link above, is that Brown and Socrates, AT THE SAME MEETING, also discussed Freeport. Freeport is right at the heart of the allegations against Socrates, who is accused of accepting bribes from Charles Smith. Charles Smith, who was contracted to obtain planning permission for the complex and licences from municipal authorities, is a long-term Portuguese resident.

Portuguese paper Diario de Noticias alleges that the British police have a DVD apparently showing Mr Smith admitting paying commission to Mr Socrates for his assistance in approving the Freeport deal.

Things get stickier by the minute.

Scottish-born Charles Smith, who served as an intermediary in Portugal to deal with bureaucracy.

When did Dr Amaral get taken off the case??

Oh dear!
How the mighty fall. Poor old Jose Socrates, Portuguese ex PM, who is now banged up in a Portuguese jail, have ex coppers, who appear to be banged up with him, fighting amongst themselves.

Edited to add that the PJ being referred to in the article, may NOT be ex police, and therefore they aren't in jail. Things get lost in Google translation, but one can get the gist of what is going on.

Sócrates case - "the public are not stupid"

Created: 19 February 2015

Former Prime Minister José Sócrates is to be taken to Lisbon to be questioned about the violation of judicial secrecy following his arrest and already has expressed his desire to cooperate.

Sócrates will be heard next Monday by a magistrate from the Department of Investigation and Prosecution in Lisbon which is investigating possible violations of the ‘secrecy of justice’ in the Operation Marquês case that largely has been played out in the country’s media.

Sócrates has expressed a willingness to be heard in any investigation related to the widespread leaks that surround his case where the evidence, like in any other, is meant to be secret.

Sócrates’ lawyer announced the filing of a complaint of ‘violation of the secrecy of justice’ on behalf of his client who has been in Évora jail since late November 2014 suspected of corruption, tax fraud and money laundering.

The prosecution claims that Sócrates benefited from money from a bank account in the name of his friend Carlos Santos Silva who is held in the same jail.

The money is suspected of having come from the Lena Group as payments for successful public tenders won during the time Sócrates was prime minister.

The questioning of Socrates by officers at the Department of Investigation and Prosecution in Lisbon coincides with the date on which his continued detention will be reviewed by judge Carlos Alexandre at the Central Criminal Court.

About the frequent leaks, the head of the Department of Investigation and Prosecution, Maria José Morgado, said "information leakage, by the defence, is common in cases of grand corruption."

In a frank and hard-hitting interview on RTP on Wednesday, Morgado explained the nature of corruption and that it was often more involved than ‘do this and I will give you that’ as it brought into play more complex forces involving a number of behaviors and decisions.

Morgado attributed the current rash of high profile cases to the experience and courage of the judges as well to the affects of the financial crisis in Portugal.

"The economic crisis is like when the mud appears at low tide. There has been a lot of mud that recently has appeared" adding that crisis has helped to explain" how the money from our taxes was squandered and how the state budget was a feeding post for many people."

The very hardness of the crisis has "allowed the glass to be broken and the realisation of what lies beyond the seemingly harmonious landscape."

Morgado also said that there is a danger of state employees involved in public procurement helping themselves" and gave as an example the fraud in the health service, including over the acquisition of hospital equipment. "Health is an area vulnerable to fraud and corruption."

On the issue of economic and financial crime, the director of DIAP said that “when a drug dealer is caught his stock is confiscated and he normally goes to jail i.e. there is a guaranteed risk to this activity. With economic and financial crime, our criminal justice system in the last 20 years has held no associated risk. Convictions have been virtually nonexistent for activities such as financial crimes and influence peddling."

"Justice has gained strength, especially in the fight against crime," said Morgado, adding that "from the moment that there are high profile cases, this transmits a message to criminals."

AS for financial crimes, "we have a faceless enemy because there is no clear victim, the victim is all of us and we can’t complain collectively. These are the intangible costs of corruption: more government deficit, more government spending, more expensive public services, more tax and injustice."

When asked about the Sócrates case, Morgado simply said, “people are not stupid.”

Judge makes getting new evidence to the Court of Appeal

Strategy irritates defense . Magistrate validated preventive Jose Socrates and prosecutors arranged for judges judges knew more data.
The strategy of the prosecution angered the defense of José Sócrates . By promoting preventive arrest of the former ruling last Monday, the Rosary Teixeira attorney was able to get the Lisbon come to know the new evidence , unless the assessment can be made - since there is no further appeal.

Let me explain : Rosario Teixeira notified on Monday morning José Sócrates of its request that the former prime minister to stay in jail. Joined the order new evidence - including banking information already arrived from Switzerland and the elements seized in Portuguese banks - and brought his claim to the judge Carlos Alexandre .

As the last day of the period - was three months that Socrates was in preventive - the judge validated the preventive arrest of the former ruler. At the same time , gave ten days to advocacy for this contrary , if you choHowever, because it complete those three months, the Lisbon - where is the feature - asked the prosecutor , also in relation, to send you the order of the review of the enforcement measures . This should only happen at the end of the deadline for João Araújo and Pedro Delille , José Sócrates lawyers , but will make the judges judges know the new facts that determine the arrest of José Sócrates . Result: although it can not pronounce on them for not yet be appealed to the second order of probation, the truth is that the judges judges will take notice of it was collected more evidence to support the evidence of crimes . This new data can then be decisive in the decision, which should only be known in the middle or at the end of March .

Until then, Socrates still stuck in the chain of Évora.ose , the new data collected by prosecutors
