Reading this last night, about a TV dramatisation of a child who goes missing while on holiday.  I wondered how far into the article Madeleine McCann's name would appear - paragraph five.

Yeah, it's meant to be the new "Broadchurch". Starts a week tomorrow on BBC

Yes this is the wrong thread.

However I do wonder if the parents of the missing child will be suspected of involvement and have "haters" on their back at some point during the drama?

Silence is golden.

Does anyone know anything more about this completely head-spinning case?

Agreed. All rather strange.
Did Arnis Zalkans really kill himself, and when in relation to Alice's murder.
Whose to say Arnis was not murdered as well.

Hanging, a favoured means of execution, apart from jumping from high bridges and buildings, and of course, zipped up suitcases immersed in baths of water.

I agree that this case is strange.  It struck me that the police had already searched the area where Alice's body was hidden and that they had already searched the woods where the supposed murderer was found hanging.  It reminded me of the case of Tia Sharp where the police searched the loft of a very small house several times before finding the body. I do not believe that the police are that incompetent.

Re: Missing 14 year old girl - Alice Gross

Briefing from the Met Press page today.

They have gone into surprising detail about some of the evidence, obviously concerned about previous ‘whitewash’ & ‘conspiracy’ theories.

STATEMENTS FOLLOWING ALICE GROSS BRIEFING

27-Jan-2015 10:41

At the end of the investigation into the disappearance and death of Alice Gross, the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) submitted a report to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). That report proposed that Arnis Zalkalns was responsible for her abduction and murder.

Although Zalkalns is dead, due to the considerable public interest in this case the CPS reviewed the key evidence and has provided advice to assist in deciding what further investigation, if any, may be appropriate.

Arnis Zalkalns became a person of interest at an early stage of the investigation into Alice’s disappearance but much more evidence and information became available as the police investigation progressed. During the investigation it was not appropriate to provide a running commentary on that evidence.

Tim Thompson, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS London said:
“I have received a report on the Metropolitan Police investigation into the disappearance and death of Alice Gross. The report concerned Arnis Zalkalns, and the CPS has not been asked to consider any other suspect.

“It is not for the CPS to say whether or not Arnis Zalkalns killed Alice Gross – that would have been for a jury to decide - but instead to determine whether there was evidence which would have provided a realistic prospect of conviction, and therefore enough evidence to charge him with murder.

I have concluded that the evidence now available would have been sufficient to give rise to a realistic prospect of conviction for murder, applying the Full Code Test in the Code for Crown Prosecutors.

“There is no eye-witness evidence. The scientific evidence does not link Arnis Zalkalns directly to Alice’s death. Nonetheless the evidence as a whole gives rise to a circumstantial case that would clearly meet the full Code test. Of all the people the various strands of evidence might have implicated they in fact point towards Arnis Zalkalns: a person who has previously killed, and concealed the body of, a young woman.

“I would therefore have authorised the police to charge Arnis Zalkalns with murder if he had been alive at the time of the report.”
DCI Andy Chalmers, said: “I am satisfied that the evidence points firmly to Zalkalns as being responsible for the abduction and murder of Alice. I believed it was important for the CPS to assess the evidence that the investigation team had found against him to reassure Alice’s family and the community, who were so affected by her disappearance.

“The public support for our investigation in the local community was overwhelming. I hope that the CPS’s decision that, if he was alive, Zalkalns would have been charged with Alice’s murder will in some way help the community come to terms.”

Some of the evidence pieced together by the investigation team is outlined below:
It is possible to determine, based on the evidence available, that Alice was walking along the Grand Union Tow Path on the afternoon of 28 August 2014, and that Arnis Zalkalns was also cycling north on the tow path on that same afternoon.

The last known sighting of Alice on CCTV is of her walking north at 16:26hrs, the last connection between her phone and a cell mast was at 16:28hrs and her phone disconnected from the network at 17:11hrs. From CCTV evidence, it also appears that Arnis Zalkalns would have overtaken Alice on the tow path at about 16:10hrs. The CCTV suggests that he must have stopped for at least 80 minutes, and when he reappeared on camera his appearance indicated that he may have been in the water.

Arnis Zalkalns returned to the tow path that evening, the following morning - when there is a significant period of time unaccounted for- and again on the evening of 29 August.

Alice Gross’s body was found in the River Brent on 30 September, having been tied into bags. Elaborate measures had been taken to keep her body submerged. A well-preserved cigarette butt was found metres from where Alice was found, and DNA from that butt has been matched to Arnis Zalkalns. DNA evidence also strongly suggests that Arnis Zalkalns was in contact with Alice’s body. One of the bags used to conceal Alice’s body mechanically matches the next bag remaining on a roll seized from his workplace. The bag was spattered with paint, as was the roll.

An iPhone cover was found concealed in Zalkalns garden. Whilst it is not possible to positively identify it by reference to a serial number, as it does not have one, Alice’s sister is confident it is hers.

The CPS’s advice does not determine the guilt or innocence of Arnis Zalkalns, which could only be decided by a jury. Instead, it finds that the Full Code test of the Code for Crown Prosecutors would have been met in this case.

Statement from the family of Alice Gross:

“It remains impossible to describe the pain of losing Alice. Her death has left a hole in our lives that can never be filled. Every day is full of reminders of her life and her loss, and it is hard to imagine a future in which we can find peace or healing. Her brutal murder remains shocking, an appallingly senseless act that is still difficult to believe or understand.

“We are confident in the conclusions of the police investigation. Despite the criticism that the police have received in the media, throughout this hideous time we have found they have remained at all times dedicated and sensitive and we would like to thank them for their support and professionalism.

“We would like to thank the local community. Hanwell is a multi-cultural and multi-faith area; the search and grief for Alice united the whole community in an extraordinary display of sympathy and compassion, and this has continued. We are very grateful.
We have also been astonished by the continuing support of the public for Alice's Youth Music Memorial Fund, which we hope will grow, and provide a sustainable legacy of music for disadvantaged children.

“The fund has so far raised £17,000, and has been supported by so many individuals, businesses and events. We would like to thank all those who have donated or given up their time to organise collections or put on gigs in tribute to Alice's memory, particularly those who have organised independent events through the Youth Music 'give a gig' scheme.

“Our own plans in support of Alice's fund are ongoing, and we hope to be able to give full details of these in due course. We are planning to hold a music event in the summer as a celebration of Alice’s life and passion for music. We also hope that in time an annual event can be launched to promote opportunities for young musicians, in tribute to Alice's aspirations.

“Although we now have certain information about how Alice died, we are still left with a number of serious unanswered questions about what the authorities knew or should have known about the man who is believed to have killed our daughter when he came to the UK.
“ Alice believed in the free movement of people and so do we. For her sake we are determined to ask these questions responsibly and sensitively. For that reason we have asked Liberty to help us and we look to the forthcoming inquest into Alice’s death to help us find answers to these questions.”

Strange.

What the police are not telling you.

These are the pictures from CCTV cameras as reported over the last months:

13.00hrs - Alice caught on CCTV walking along Campbell Road, past Hanwell Station

13:02hrs - Alice caught on CCTV walking along Golden Manor and then Alwyn Road

13:13hrs - Alice is caught on CCTV walking along the river path in the direction of Hanwell Bridge

13:15hrs - Alice is caught on CCTV walking along the Uxbridge Road

13:26hrs - Alice is caught on CCTV in Windmill Lane. She then followed the Grand Union Canal towpath until it reached the Thames, walking towards Kew

14:23hrs - Alice is caught on CCTV near the Holiday Inn, Commerce Road

15.45hrs - Alice passing Brentford Lock at about 15:45 BST

15:56hrs - Alice is caught on CCTV close to the GlaxoSmithKline building based in Great West Road

16.00hrs - Zalkalns passing Brentford Lock at about 16:00 BST

16:02hrs - Alice is caught on CCTV opposite Transport Avenue

16:23hrs - Three cyclists, followed by two cyclists, are caught on CCTV riding on the towpath under Trumpers Way, that crosses the Grand Union Canal

16:26hrs - The last sighting of Alice that is captured on CCTV shows her walking along the canal towpath under Trumpers Way, the bridge that crosses the Grand Union Canal. She was headed in the direction Hanwell.

17.49hrs Zalkalns emerging onto Hanwell Bridge/Uxbridge Road at 17:49 BST

19.35hrs "Stomach-churning" (really? he's just buying two cans of beer) security footage then shows Zalkalns at a corner shop in West Ealing - just over than a mile from where Alice's body was found - at 7.35pm.

If he was following her then he would have appeared on the CCTV at Transport Avenue and Trumpers Bridge. But he isn't on those cameras. The Police at the time said they couldn't explain it.

So this can't be true from yesterday's media!!
16.10hrs - CCTV footage suggests the convicted murderer passed Alice on the towpath on his bicycle at around 4.10pm

There is a bridge before transport avenue that leads towards where Zalkains lived. He must have turned off there if he's not on the CCTV.

Also where the body was found is quite open and in full view of a "Lock Cottage".

Something doesn't add up.

4 = Transport Avenue
5 = Trumpers Bridge

Zalkalns was not on CCTV at either location.

If you check the trumpers way footage at 4.26 there are a number of cyclists passing Alice 5 in fact who police wanted to trace.   The footage is grainy, really quite bad  and described as 'distant'. Have a look and you will see it's very hard to identify any of the cyclists which is why police have probably not positively said one of those cyclists WAS Zalkalns but one of them could be.

There are stills in this BBC report but you can watch the footage elsewhere.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-29094615

The 5.49 footage of Zalkans is much clearer which is why police have positively identified him I suppose, where was he for all that time? probably not on any other CCTV in the area.   The police are not telling us Zalkalns was one of the cyclists because they can't state it as 100% fact from the footage.   They theorise he was cycling on the same path as Alice and then at some time he hid in bushes in order to attack her. The place he went off from the track may not be covered by CCTV.   He was a convicted killer who already hid one woman's body and cycling near to a girl who ended up the same way...I really don't see it as not making sense.
