The Barcelona - Praia Da Luz Sponsored Walk Update

I think about 1000 miles , I plan to do 30 miles a day starting 6am , so its got to take 5 weeks I reckon - posted by Debbie Butler

Deborah - have you ever walked 30 miles in a day?? Walking 30 miles a day in Spain/Portugal from 21st June onwards is a very serious challenge. For someone who proclaims to live in Spain, you should know. I presume she's going to be carrying a 30-40lb backpack. And she "thinks" it's about 1,000 miles??? She doesn't know precisely?? In UK, in a flattish city environment, you can estimate 3 miles per hour. In the UK countryside, that estimate can go out of the window - because it depends on the terrain - posted by Carmen

deborah Today at 10:18 am

I can fit this walk in if I do it at the date in June - I havent done a walk before but had practice at weekend from boxley to Charing while son at football tournament so had all day and it was ok , also swimming in mornings - dont know what use that willl be !!--

What planet does Butler live on?

any breeze there may be , I am taking bare minimum - just light
rucksack with cream and underwear etc , will have to sleep somewhere and
will play it by ear as I wont know exactly where I will end up each day
so will look for small hotel etc to keep my costs down . Going to
Macmillan today and they are providing t shirts and sponsor forms etc .
I am looking forward to doing it , and will be nice if I can meet with
Mumbles who has said they will walk their Island with me

Morning Justagran

I recently took part in a sponsored 40 mile walk (an annual event in my area) and can tell you that next day I was unable to stand up, let alone walk much!!!!
Even those used to walking needed to recover afterwards. True to form, clearly Debbie has given this idea little or no thought and just says the first thing that pops into her head, probably to gain attention. Nice to see at least one MM member querying her increasingly bizarre schemes

Ms Butler walks Spain in Aid of MacMillan Fund

Wednesday, 26 May 2010 08:27
Dark Therapy

What was initially greeted with some
scepticism has now been shown to be quite a worthwhile endeavour.

Ms Debbie Butler, former chair
person of the Madeleine Foundation has declared that she is to undertake
a sponsored walk starting in Spain and ending in Portugal. All proceeds
to be donated to MacMillan
Cancer Research
and it has also been stated that a percentage of
the total donations will be given to the Find Madeleine Fund.

There is already a strong interest from the various sides of the community
willing to sponsor Ms Butler and we are also fully supporting her in
this as the charity she has chosen to support does fantastic work for
people suffering from cancer.

Ms Butler has said that more details on
how to sponsor her will be made available this coming Thursday, 27th May 2010.

Official
Sponsorship site for Ms Butler

I thought she had changed her mind and wasnt donating to the Find Madeleine fund as they "had enough people donating"

Watch them all swiftly withdraw their support

Good luck to this lady if she attempts this but, personally, I think she hasn't thought it through properly or is just plain barmy.

Oh dear, I'm lost for words.

Is this about spotlight for herself or is this about Madeleine?

If she wants attention she is definitely getting it from some unsavoury quarters.

The details on her justgiving webpage reveal her target is to raise £300 !!!!

Who in their right mind would undertake this venture to raise such a small amount of money? I would have expected a donation from Carter Ruck for that amount alone.

Exactly. The travel costs to Barcelona then back to the UK from PDL, plus meals and accommodation on the journey must come to around £300, not to mention sun cream and blister pads !!!!
Why not cost that out, send that money to the charity then sink into an armchair with chocolates and ice cream and watch Wimbledon ?

Where has Deborah Butler got my personal email address from?

Has anyone else had an email from her today regarding her justgiving site?

I never used that email on MM but did long ago on 3A.

Did she take member lists with her when she left the MF?

eta. my personal email addy was one of those exposed when we were all outed from the petition we signed - she must have taken notes

Little Pixie, just checked my hotmail and, sure enough, Butler has sent me an e-mail too. Butler, if you are reading this please note that if you contact me again I will register a complaint about your behaviour with the Macmillan Charity.

I haven't had an e mail and I still have the same e mail accounts I used for the 3As and MM.

Perhaps Ms Butler has me on "Ignore"

Justagran, most of us can only dream of being on Ms Butler's 'Ignore' list - how on earth did you manage that? Perhaps you could invite her to our knitting circle here as she excells in spinning yarns

Re: Charities and The McCann Fund - Discussion Thread

I asked her not to spam me and she has replied stating it is not spam it is fundraising.

I am sorry I cannot stand people who resort to tactics such as this, I have come across many of them who enter business premises trying to "shame" people into donating to their cause. I contacted Christies Hospital once after I had a particularly aggressive "fundraiser" who refused to leave without being given money. They were mortified at the mans behaviour.

I also cannot stand people who say "all look at me and what I am doing for charity"

There are ways and means of raising money without stealing peoples private email addresses and without calling a fanfare for yourself.

I think she's pretty much exhausted her donation list if shes now resorting to asking those shes harassed and threatened over the last year or so.

My response to Ms Butler's e-mail to me is as follows:

Please do not contact me or attempt to send me your spam mail to my private e-mail address. As I have absolutely no interest in anything that you say or do, there would be little or no point in you contacting me either by e-mail or on the forums. Should you wish to post my response on the MM Forum, that is fine by me.
